Boxing Physical Fitness Secrets

By: Keith Colladow

Boxing is arguably among the most difficult sports to train for. Fighters need to be healthy, strong, quick, agile, powerful, adept and brave. This indicates that their training is extremely specialised as well as helps to explain why fighters are amongst the fittest athletes in sport.

So what do boxers do to get so in good condition? In some ways this is a hard question to answer because, like boxing styles, there are numerous ways that a fighter can get in shape. A lot of instructors keep their approaches secret as well as vehemently disagree with the approaches used by their fellow coaches. As an example, where some trainers instruct to hit the weights, others say that lifting weights will make fighters slow and "muscle bound". As both camps of instructors have created champs, it's clear that there is no straightforward answer to the question "how do boxers train".

There are, however, a variety of typical approaches that most fight trainers agree on.

Road work - long runs made to increase fundamental fitness and aid the boxer to lose weight and typically performed in the early morning and before breakfast to make the most of weight loss.

Abdominal work - tough abdominals are crucial for throwing huge blows as well as shielding the boxer against blows to the stomach.

Heavy bag work - to increase punching power and practice throwing various punch combos. Working the heavy bag is also an efficient type of conditioning training.

Speed bag - as the name suggests, this tool is used to develop punching speed and reflexes.

Calisthenics - another way of saying high repetition bodyweight exercises. Press ups, squat thrusts, sit ups and lunges are all examples of this type of exercise. Calisthenics develop muscle endurance.

Sparring - controlled fighting for the purpose of developing speed, capability and fitness.

Pad work - one on one training that involves punching and dodging pads held by the coach. And also developing a boxer's skills, this exercise additionally raises fitness.

Jumping rope - a keystone of any boxing exercise, there isn't a single champ, past or present, who didn't spend great deals of time jumping rope.

Jump rope is really worth more than a passing mention simply due to the fact that it offers a lot of advantages to a boxer. Jumping rope is great for developing fitness, weight control, foot speed, eye-hand coordination, upper body endurance and agility. You just have to look at videos of boxing greats like Mohammed Ali, Mike Tyson, Roberto Duran and Marvin Haggler jumping rope to see just exactly how effective utilizing a speed rope can be. If it was good enough for those legendary fighters, it'll be good enough for you!

Jumping rope is probably the worst kept secret in boxing as practically every boxer that has actually ever before entered the squared circle has actually done it and while it's not a new exercise method, jumping rope is probably among the most effective.

Keith Colladow is a personal trainer, health and fitness lecturer and writes for several online publications on various topics such as speed jump rope workouts and fitness.

GrantCain Grant Cain Recruiting Coordinator, Inside Linebackers Coach & Co-Special Teams Coach at Mercer University
Grant Cain begins his second season as the recruiting coordinator, inside linebackers coach and co-special teams coach at Mercer University in 2014.

In his first season, Cain mentored a young inside linebacker unit that helped key a Bears’ rushing defense that ranked second in the Division I FCS. His unit had two of the team’s top four tacklers, led by freshmen Tyler Ward, who posted a team-high 101 tackles (10.5 for loss), and Devin Davidson, who added 57 tackles and two fumble recoveries.

Cain came to Mercer after a seven-year post at Coastal Carolina University, holding various positions on the Chanticleers’ staff. His stint at Coastal Carolina began in 2005, when he was hired as a graduate assistant coach under then-head coach David Bennett.

He parlayed his role as a graduate assistant coach into a full-time coaching position in 2007 after graduating with a master’s degree in instructional technology. His appointment as outside linebackers coach ushered in an era of consistency on the defensive side of the ball as the team ranked among the nation’s top-23 programs in tackles-for-loss (TFL) in 2007, led the conference in TFL in 2008 and paced the league in sacks in 2009.

In 2010, Cain was promoted to coach both the defensive ends and outside linebackers, and continued to produce immediate dividends in his assigned defensive areas. Despite suffering a season-ending injury to preseason all-conference selection Quinton Davis, Cain helped develop senior DE Kent Harper from a third-string backup into one of the league’s premier defensive players. Harper finished the 2010 season with an average of 10.0 tackles per game, ranking third among Big South players and 16th-best in the nation before landing All-Big South Second Team honors.

Cain’s time at Coastal Carolina saw the team reach unprecedented success, capturing Big South Championships in 2005, 2006 and 2010. Overall, his work helped the Chanticleers rack up a gaudy 47-33 overall record, while becoming a perennial league power with a 22-13 Big South record. During more than seven seasons at Coastal Carolina, Cain also contributed instruction for the special teams units and inside linebackers.

Prior to his time at Coastal Carolina, Cain spent the 2005 spring and summer seasons as a defensive assistant with the Colorado Crush of the Arena Football league. His efforts helped lead the Crush to its first AFL title in the franchise’s third year of existence.

Cain’s playing days saw him earn team captain honors in his senior season at Catawba College, an NCAA Division II member of the South Atlantic Conference. During his four seasons as a student-athlete, the Indians made national playoff appearances every year, including advancing to the semifinals in 2001.

A 2003 graduate of Catawba with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Cain is married to the former Shauna Koontz. The couple has two sons, Caleb and Samuel.

Don't be your Own Worst Enemy!

By: Marc Victor

I cringe to think how many times clients come into my office to discuss their criminal matter with me only to learn they have done possibly irreparable damage to their case. I have found few people who are aware of their constitutional rights.

Your awareness of some simple concepts may serve you well in the event you or a loved one is the unfortunate subject of a criminal investigation. First of all, always remember, you are not required to talk to the police. There may be occasions where your persuasive oral skills will serve to get you a stern warning instead of a costly ticket; however, talking with the police will rarely benefit you when the investigation is for a crime.

In addition, talking to friends and family about your criminal matter is usually not a good idea either. Although you do not expect a friend or family member to compromise your case, you may put him or her in an unfair position. A prosecutor may summon your family member or friend to the witness stand in a criminal trial and ask questions about your statements. Such a dilemma will force your family member or friend to decide between perjury and possibly hurting your case.

Don't get caught up by the fact that the police officer failed to inform you of your "Miranda Rights." These are your rights to remain silent and to have an attorney present during questioning. So long as you are not under "arrest" the police officer may properly ask you questions without informing you of these rights.

You are never required to consent to a search. If a police officer has a search warrant, you must permit the search. However, if a search warrant has not yet been obtained, you should insist the officer obtain one before you voluntarily allow a search. The fact that you insist upon a search warrant does not mean you have something to hide. Rather, it is a confirmation of the constitutional concept that police do not have the right to arbitrarily conduct searches of your property.

A police officer has no right to detain you unless there exists reasonable suspicion that you committed a crime or traffic violation. However, a police officer is always allowed to initiate a voluntary conversation with you.
Sometimes it is unclear whether or not a person is detained. If you are in doubt, you should ask the police officer if you are in fact free to leave.

If you are arrested, Arizona law mandates that you will be brought before a judge within twenty-four hours. This is an important hearing for you. The judge will decide what conditions, if any, must be met before you can be released from jail. You have a right to retain an attorney for this hearing to argue for your release.

Regarding the crime of driving under the influence of alcohol, the best advice is to have a designated driver. However, if you are the subject of a DUI investigation, you must be especially careful and thoughtful about what you say and do. In Arizona, a conviction for DUI guarantees a jail term.

Arizona law does not require you to submit to roadside field sobriety tests. Although these tests may assist you to convince an officer you are not intoxicated, as a general rule, refusing to take the tests is the better choice. Keep in mind, it is the police officer who subjectively decides whether you passed or failed the tests.
Deciding whether to submit to a blood, breath or urine test is a different matter altogether. If you refuse one of these tests, you will likely lose your driver's license for one year. You should consult an attorney before deciding to refuse or submit to one of these tests.

DUI is a complex area of the criminal law. However, like other criminal charges, the decisions you make during your initial contact with a police officer can be the difference between conviction and acquittal.
