A tough call for cancer patients

To Scan or Not to Scan:
A Really Tough Call to Make

When you think about “radiation,” you might think of glowing green radioactive stones, like the uranium used in atomic bombs. But ionizing radiation is all around us. It’s in the soil, the environment, our homes, and it’s even blasting down on us from the sun’s cosmic rays (and your exposure is higher if you’re up in a plane).
Ionizing radiation is a high energy wave (consisting of highly energized particles) emitted by unstable, radioactive atoms. As these atoms decay, they send out energy powerful enough to knock electrons off other molecules lying in their path.
If a molecule that gets in the way of this blast is a part of living tissue, the radiation will mutate, damage, or even kill the cell. This causes many types of cancer, including leukemia – and makes cancer worse if it’s already present.
I’ve been concerned for a long time that medical professionals rely on radiation so heavily for diagnostic scans like x-rays, CT and PET scans. The use and overuse of scans presents a huge problem for anyone concerned about cancer. This publication has already been on record for a long time opposing routine mammograms (See Issue #218.)
Besides the energy rays they blast through the body, some scans also require the patient to inhale, swallow, or inject radioactive materials.
Medical professionals insist that the radiation used in medical imaging is “minimal,” and that the “benefits greatly outweigh the risks.” Does that make you feel comfortable blasting vulnerable parts of your body with radiation? Me either.
So how much radiation are we really talking here? And how do you know whether the benefits of medical imaging truly do outweigh the risks? Find out the facts you need to know to make the right decision for you or your loved ones. . .

Three Bulldogs Score in Double Figures as Bowie State Defeats Cheyney 77-66

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State University Bulldogs snapped a two-game slide, defeating Cheyney University 77-66 in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon in the A.C. Jordan Arena.

Bowie State (4-2) was led by juniors Andre Jackson (Baltimore, Md.) and Justin Beck (Ellicott City, Md.) with double-doubles of 14 points / 10 rebounds and 12 points / ten rebounds respectively. Jackson and Beck’s rebound totals were career-highs for both players. Fellow junior Julian Livingston (Bowie, Md.) added 10 points and redshirt junior Miles Jackson (Silver Spring, Md.) fell just shy of a double-double, contributing nine points and nine rebounds.

As a team, Bowie State doubled Cheyney’s rebound total, out-rebounding the Wolves 50-25. In fact, the Bulldogs pounded the glass for 22 offensive rebounds which led to 25 second chance points. Bowie State also dominated in the paint, holding a 42-18 advantage over the Wolves. The Bulldogs handed out a season-high 20 assists with freshman Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) dishing out a personal season-best six assists.

The Cheyney Wolves (1-4) were led in scoring by Kevin Larkin (Lincoln, Del.) with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting and Jerrod Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa.) added 15 points.

The first half was a see-saw affair that featured five lead changes and four ties.  Neither team had a lead larger than five points. Cheyney and Bowie State went into intermission tied at 30.

“Our biggest problem in the first half was missed layups but held them to 30 points over the first 20 minutes”, said Bowie State head coach Darrell Brooks. “The emphasis at halftime was for us to finish around the rim and to keep attacking and thought we did really good job with that in the second half.”

The second half was a game of runs.  The Bulldogs came out of the locker room to score the first nine points of the half.  Cheyney responded with a 17-5 run to take a 47-44 lead after Michael Drinks (Philadelphia, Pa.) drained a jumper with 13:21 remaining.  With the score tied at 49, Bowie State went on another big run, this time an 18-5 run to take a 67-54 advantage for their largest lead of the afternoon with 6:15 to play.  Cheyney was able to cut the deficit to eight points on two occasions but were unable to get any closer in closing minutes.

“We have to be a balanced team and two stat lines I was really proud of today … Rebounding and sharing the basketball”, stated Brooks

The Bulldogs return to action on Monday (December 1st) on the road at Millersville University with tip off against the Marauders set for 7 pm.
