The Essential Benefits of Sports Massage

Even though this may a bit expensive. A good massage therapist can be the difference between a season of constant aches and pains, or a season of top performance. The reasons are listed below.

The Essential Benefits of Sports Massage

by Elaine Smith

Sports massage aids the repair of soft tissue injuries such as ankle sprains, groin strains, shin splints and the like. Sports massage techniques are mostly the same as traditional massage, however, the focus is to reactivate the damaged tissue. An application of repeated deep pressure to the injured area will help revive the tired and stressed muscles.

There are many benefits that a sports massage can provide and:

- It promotes overall wellness.

- It provides muscle balance.

- Allow you to have a consistent higher level of training and performance.

- Lessen adhesions so that it can give way to quick restoration of your muscle.

- Enhances your strength for each movement you make.

- Allows you to have a speedy recovery from injury.

- Increases flexibility to tensed muscles or tendons that can be the cause of injury.

- Avoids chronic problems.

- Sports massage is a great tool for athletes as they need their muscles to be in great condition.

Athletes spend months of training and undertaking sports massage before or after training can mend or recondition their body. It also improves the flow of blood through the muscles which helps in detoxification of lactic acid that is one of the causes of muscle pains and cramps. Sports massage also aids supplementary blood and oxygen into the muscle to assist restoration of dead cells which can strengthen the muscles more.

Sports Massage Categories:

Before the event massage - The athlete is given a massage 15-45 minutes before the event. The focus of the massage is the areas which will be involved in the physical exertion of the event.

After the event massage - This is usually performed an hour after the event to stabilize the tissues that have been used in the sports to smoothen the tightness and soreness.

Restorative sports massage - This is undertaken during the training of the athlete to be able to train harder with a lesser chance of injury.

Rehabilitative massage - This is to alleviate pain due to athlete's injury which can also heal the body.

If you have a concussion, acute injury or any injury that involves bone damages, you must consult a physician first before having a sports massage. An orthopedic injury requires professional treatment which should be handled by an Orthopedist partnered with a Massage Clinic.

Non-athletes can also undertake a sports massage especially those who regularly engage in exercise and exert more effort physically. It is important to inform your licensed massage therapist what area of your body is usually stressed so that the therapist can perform sports massage techniques and focus to the specific area that needs restoration.

Bulldogs Upset No. 4 East Stroudsburg 76-71 in CIAA-PSAC Challenge

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. - Three players scored in double figures Saturday afternoon for the Bowie State University men's basketball team, as the Bulldogs upset 4th ranked (NABC Poll) East Stroudsburg University by a score of 76-71. Freshman Ahmaad Wilson  (Baltimore, Md.) paced the Bulldogs with a game-high 19 points, going 7-for-10 from the floor, while junior Andre Jackson (Baltimore, Md.) added 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Fellow junior Justin Beck (Baltimore, Md.)  tallied 12 points and tied Jackson for game-high rebound honors.

Wilson was named to the All-Challenge Team and selected the Most Valuable Player. Jackson and senior Cameron Knox (Baltimore, Md.) were also selected to the All-Challenge Team along with East Stroudsburg’s Jamal Nwaniemeka (Philadelphia, Pa.).

“This was a terrific (signature) win for us”, said Bowie State Head Coach Darrell Brooks. “We said going into today’s game that this was a great opportunity for us … They’re a really good basketball team and even though this is early in the year, this is kind of reminiscent of a NCAA Semifinal type game.”

East Stroudsburg (1-1), which beat host Lincoln 92-72 on Friday night, led by 11 points in the first half and by eight with 12 minutes remaining before Bowie State (2-0) rallied with a 19-5 run in a four-minute stretch midway through the second half.
Wilson scored eight points in the run and had 14 of his 19 points in the second half. He scored 20 points off the bench in Bowie State's 76-64 win over Millersville on Friday. Nwaniemeka scored 17 and Whis Grant (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) scored 15 points and added six assists. Lamont Tillery had 13 points and six rebounds and Rasheed Moore had 11 points and six rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 48.3 percent (29-for-60) from the field and 11-for-20 from the three-point line, led by Wilson (4-for-5) and Jackson (3-for-6).
East Stroudsburg had an 18-14 turnover advantage, but was outrebounded 43-34 and shot 37.3 percent (25-for-67) overall and 7-for-24 from long distance.
ESU built a 27-16 lead at the nine-minute mark of the first half, but Bowie State recovered to take a two-point lead late in the period before the Warriors tied it, 37-37, at halftime.
The Warriors pushed their advantage back to eight points a couple times in the second half, going ahead 51-43 after a three-pointer byMatt Tobin (Hopatcong, N.J.) with just under 12 minutes left.
Bowie State scored the next eight points in just over a minute to tie the game, and later got back-to-back three's by senior Zafir Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Wilson to lead 62-56 with eight minutes to play.
ESU cut it back to one possession with five minutes left, but didn't score again after closing within 73-71 with 2:50 remaining. The Warriors missed three three-pointers and two free throws down the stretch.

The Bulldogs return to the hardwood on Wednesday (November 19th) making a trip to the University of the District of Columbia. Game time in UDC’s Sports Complex is set for 7 pm.

Three Coppin State student-athletes earn USTFCCCA All-Academic honors

BALTIMORE – Coppin State student-athletes Christina Epps, Deandra Daniel and Rosen Daniel earned United States Track & Field Cross-Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honors for their combined academic and athletic accomplishments during the 2013-14 year.

All three student-athletes earned All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) honors and participated in the NCAA Division I East Regional Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary Championships in Jacksonville in May.

Epps, who completed her first year of graduate school, competed at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Oregon and the USATF Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, California last month. Epps set a school record of 13.40 meters (43 feet, 11.75 inches) in finishing third overall at the NCAA Division I East Regional Preliminary Championships.

Epps won the MEAC and ECAC triple jump championships in both events, earned indoor All-American honors after finishing seventh at the NCAA Championships and finished sixth at the U.S. Senior National Championships.

A sophomore business major, Deandra Daniel was named to the Trinidad and Tobago Commonwealth Games Association (TTCGA)/Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) national team. Daniel soared a school record 1.83 meters in winning the high jump at the Morgan State Legacy Meet on April 18.

She won the MEAC indoor and outdoor high jump championships for the second straight year. Her effort of 1.82 meters at the outdoor championship meet was a meet record.

Rosen Daniel advanced to the semifinals of the 400-meter dash at the NCAA Division I Track and Field Outdoor Preliminary Championships in Jacksonville. He set the indoor school record in the 400-meter dash (46.75) seconds at the ECAC/IC4A Championships in Boston. In that meet, Daniel finished second in the 400 and helped the 4 x 4 place third in the event.

During the outdoor season, Rosen set a school record in placing fourth in the 200-meter dash (20.97 seconds) at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships. He is a member of the school record 4x1 and 4x2 relay teams. He also earned All-MEAC honors after helping the 4x4 relay team finish second.

Including the Scholar Athletes of the Year, a total of 727 women from 193 institutions earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for their combined academic and athletic accomplishments. A total of 496 men from 165 institutions earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for their combined academic and athletic accomplishments.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards.

For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).

Bowie State Bulldogs Football Wraps Up Spring Practice on a Successful Note

      Displaying Wilson, Johnson and Redman.jpg

BOWIE, Md. - Easter weekend proved to be more than just another holiday for the Bowie State University Football Team.  Following a “Mock Draft” on Thursday, April 17th where Moses Ware, Bulldog Offensive Coordinator and Coach for the Gold Team and Antone’ Sewell, Defensive Coordinator and Coach of the Black Team chose players for each of their teams in a fashion similar to the NFL Draft.

On Friday, April 18th, the Bulldog Coaching staff hosted the program’s first fundraiser in the Student Center.  The capacity crowd of parents, friends of the program and supports were entertained by a DJ and the Soul Patrol Band.  Proceeds from the event netted over $10,000 that go directly into the Bulldog Foundation which supports the football team’s student-athletes.

On Saturday, April 19th, the entire football team came together to go over last minute details and assignments prior to the Bulldog Alumni Game.  Just as they were about to be released, Bulldog Linebacker Coach and former Super Bowl Champion (New Orleans Saints) Charles Grant introduced the Bulldog players and coaching staff to his former teammate at the University of Georgia, Running Back for the Denver Broncos and Detroit Lions and Riverdale Baptist Alum, Olandis Gary who gave words of encouragement and hosted a valuable question and answer session.

The Bulldogs had their full Black and Gold Game to wrap-up the Spring Season following a spirited Alumni Game featuring former Bulldog players from the 80’s, 90s’ and 2000’s to include Bulldog Defensive Coordinator Sewell. The Spring Game began with former Bulldog and Houston Texans Delano Johnson (’11) as Honorary Captain for the Black Team while former Pittsburgh Steelers and Bulldog All-Time Leading Rusher Isaac Redman captained the Gold Squad.

The day was filled with big hits and big plays which resulted in only a 3-0 score for the Gold Squad.  Afterwards, Bulldogs Head Coach Damon Wilson stated he was happy with the fact the team was able to fill two completely separate teams with multiple players at each position so that the coaching staff could truly get an accurate evaluation of the team’s strengths and challenges.

With training camp in the not so distant future and the first game against Saint Anselm at home on September 6th, the Bulldogs are prepared to make a statement all season long until they regain the CIAA Championship on what would be the 25th anniversary of the last time the Bulldogs were crowned Champions.
