The Essential Benefits of Sports Massage

Even though this may a bit expensive. A good massage therapist can be the difference between a season of constant aches and pains, or a season of top performance. The reasons are listed below.

The Essential Benefits of Sports Massage

by Elaine Smith

Sports massage aids the repair of soft tissue injuries such as ankle sprains, groin strains, shin splints and the like. Sports massage techniques are mostly the same as traditional massage, however, the focus is to reactivate the damaged tissue. An application of repeated deep pressure to the injured area will help revive the tired and stressed muscles.

There are many benefits that a sports massage can provide and:

- It promotes overall wellness.

- It provides muscle balance.

- Allow you to have a consistent higher level of training and performance.

- Lessen adhesions so that it can give way to quick restoration of your muscle.

- Enhances your strength for each movement you make.

- Allows you to have a speedy recovery from injury.

- Increases flexibility to tensed muscles or tendons that can be the cause of injury.

- Avoids chronic problems.

- Sports massage is a great tool for athletes as they need their muscles to be in great condition.

Athletes spend months of training and undertaking sports massage before or after training can mend or recondition their body. It also improves the flow of blood through the muscles which helps in detoxification of lactic acid that is one of the causes of muscle pains and cramps. Sports massage also aids supplementary blood and oxygen into the muscle to assist restoration of dead cells which can strengthen the muscles more.

Sports Massage Categories:

Before the event massage - The athlete is given a massage 15-45 minutes before the event. The focus of the massage is the areas which will be involved in the physical exertion of the event.

After the event massage - This is usually performed an hour after the event to stabilize the tissues that have been used in the sports to smoothen the tightness and soreness.

Restorative sports massage - This is undertaken during the training of the athlete to be able to train harder with a lesser chance of injury.

Rehabilitative massage - This is to alleviate pain due to athlete's injury which can also heal the body.

If you have a concussion, acute injury or any injury that involves bone damages, you must consult a physician first before having a sports massage. An orthopedic injury requires professional treatment which should be handled by an Orthopedist partnered with a Massage Clinic.

Non-athletes can also undertake a sports massage especially those who regularly engage in exercise and exert more effort physically. It is important to inform your licensed massage therapist what area of your body is usually stressed so that the therapist can perform sports massage techniques and focus to the specific area that needs restoration.
