A group of researchers from the United Arab Emirates University in Al Ain conducted a study that shows manuka honey contains properties that can block tumor growth in the breasts, colon, and skin.
According to study results published in the PLOS ONE scientific journal, Professor Basel Al Ramadi, head of the Microbiology and Immunology Department at UAE University, led a research team to determine the extent of manuka honey's ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
The team learned that this type of honey directly caused apoptosis or programmed cell death!
Your body uses apoptosis to balance the creation of new cells with the demise of older ones. It’s essential to your health to keep these two processes in balance, for two main reasons:
  1. Excessive apoptosis will cause your tissues to atrophy, and
  2. Insufficient apoptosis leads to uncontrolled cell growth, similar to what happens when a person has cancer.
The UAE University research suggests that manuka honey helps eliminate cancer cells by bringing on apoptosis.
Manuka honey has amazing
antibacterial properties, too!
Scrubbing cancer cells from your body isn’t the only health benefit of this sweet syrup. Recent tests conducted at Sydney University's School of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences showed that manuka honey killed every type of bacteria tested.
Scientists from the University of Ottawa, and Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Ottawa achieved similar results when testing honey against pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and staphylococcus aureus (SA).
The Canadian group conducted in vitro (i.e. lab culture) testing of honey against these strains of bacteria. They found the honey to be effective in killing 100 percent of the isolates in their planktonic form. And when the germs were made into biofilms, the manuka honey killed 63 percent of the PA bacteria and 91 percent of the SA. (A biofilm is a group of microorganisms that stick to one another on a surface. Planktonic cells, by contrast, exist individually, each by itself.)
The researchers said these rates were significantly higher than those achieved when using antibiotic drugs against staphyloccus bacteria.
Sounds wild, but I remember reading some 30 years ago that honey is a highly effective wound dressing because it kills microbes. And, as I mentioned before, our ancestors knew this before the time of Christ.
So the recent scientific findings simply echo what ancient civilizations already knew about the healing properties of honey. Manuka honey takes no prisoners when it comes up against:
  1. Helicobacter pylori- which causes most stomach ulcers
  2. Escherichia coli - the culprit behind most infected wounds
  3. Streptococcus pyogenes - which causes sore throats
What’s more, manuka honey is also being touted as a marvelous all-purpose medicine that can help:
  • Heal superficial burns
  • Cover and heal surgical wounds, particularly for diabetic patients
  • Soothe inflammation
  • Treat leg ulcers, pressure sores and wounds from skin cancers
How do you use this all-purpose honey healer?
There’s no special method or preparation you need in order to use honey. You can apply manuka honey directly to your skin as a balm for infections, or to soothe insect bites and cuts.
And you most certainly can swallow a spoonful or mix it with some tea to help soothe your throat and digestive tract.
Because manuka honey is a food, you can eat it the way you would any other honey product and enjoy the health benefits!
With all this positive press... you might be wondering if there’s any downside to using manuka honey. Well, ease your mind because no earth shattering revelations are coming your way!
There are no known side effects of active manuka honey when used internally, unless you are allergic to honey (as some people are). But there are some reasonable warnings and cautions.
It should be no surprise that diabetics might need to avoid or limit their intake of honey because of the high sugar content.
And you shouldn’t give honey to children under 12 months old (I’m guessing this is because of the potential for allergic reactions). You should also know that active manuka honey has stronger properties than regular manuka honey.
“Active” manuka honey contains an additional, non-peroxide component known as methyl glyoxal. Scientists don’t know why, but this element is not found in all manuka honey, only in some. When present, it makes the honey vastly more powerful at fighting bacteria.
So powerful, in fact, that researchers have devised a special rating system for manuka honey based on a batch’s “unique manuka factor” or UMF. It’s used as a marker to determine the honey’s therapeutic value.
At times, active manuka honey applied directly on an external wound can sting. If you find this to be true in your case, simply use regular manuka honey instead.

Broccoli sprouts have decided advantages over mature broccoli.
Johns Hopkins scientists found that three-day old broccoli sprouts consistently packed 20 to 50 times the chemo-protective compounds found in mature broccoli heads.
When you eat a sprout, you’re eating the entire plant at a very young age. That is, you eat the root, stem, and head in one concentrated little package.
As the plant sucks water and grows, the cancer-protective compounds called sulforaphanes (part of a group called glucosinolates) are diluted. They’re still there, in roughly the same amount. But now instead of merely eating a sprouted seed to get them, you have to eat the entire plant!
When you buy broccoli at the store, you’re buying just a portion of the whole plant. Glucosinolates were left in the ground (the root), others are in the leaves you discarded, and others were removed when the stem was cut off (many people just eat the florets).
You might be wondering, why not just eat the seed before it even sprouts? Well you could… but sprouts are far more tasty, nutritious and easier to digest. Non-sprouted broccoli seeds taste terrible!
Sprouted broccoli seed may also offer a simple dietary means of reducing prostate and colon cancer risk.
Plus, they may bolster your defense against heart disease, stroke, and high cholesterol, while at the same time they support your eye health, lung health, and immune system. When eaten during pregnancy, they may provide children with life-long protection from cardiovascular disease.

Store-bought organic produce has a dark side
If all this isn’t enough to convince you to try sprouting, consider the reality of the organic foods your grocer carries.
By the time you buy your organic produce, it’s likely been refrigerated for days, weeks, or even longer. Farms store it before shipment, and it travels for days to arrive at your store, where it’s stored yet again. By the time you get it, it may have lost its freshness.
Most phytonutrients are inactive after about three weeks. Vitamins reportedly decline to a fraction of their original levels. The plant hormones may no longer be viable, and enzymes no longer active.
Your organic produce is massively compromised by the time it reaches you. A farmer’s market is a better choice, but why not grow your own and eat them at their peak of freshness?
Eating organic does lower your toxic load from pesticides. But you’re still losing the freshness you could have if you grew your own sprouts.
So why not earmark some of your current produce budget to buy seeds you can sprout at home?
How to grow your own sprouts
So, are you ready to embark on this new and exciting, yet simple, adventure in eating? You just need a little basic equipment and some seeds.
You can get canning jar lids and sprout your seeds in a canning jar. It’s the cheapest way to get started, but drainage is a real problem.
An 8x10 tray two-section stackable sprouter such as the Sprout Master ( is a much easier way to go. They cost about $20 each, and come with tray, drain tray and cover. For greater variety and rotation, buy two trays. We have no affiliation with this provider.
This is your only investment for most sprouts, besides your organic seeds. While broccoli is loaded with amazing benefits, it’s wise to consume a wide variety, for interest and nutrition. Try broccoli, alfalfa, radish, cabbage, peas, beans, and lentils.
For tiny seeds like alfalfa, four tablespoons of seed will make a full 8x10 tray full, enough for one or two people for a few days. A tray of organic sprouts costs about $1.00 to $1.50, depending on your seed type and source… a far cry from a $6 plastic tub of organic greens.
And growing them is simple!
  1. Select your seeds and soak in water for 10-12 hours in a bowl. Allow for a 300% expansion.
  2. Pour the soaked seeds into the drainable tray, and spray them gently to even them out.
  3. Rinse and drain, morning and evening to keep seeds moist.
  4. Sprout with the lid on. In hot climates, use a warm, damp cloth without lid for better airflow. Keep sprouter out of direct sunlight. Sprouts grow best at 75 to 80 degrees.
  5. Taste in three or four days. When you like the taste, leave them uncovered but out of direct sunlight to develop greenness.
  6. Refrigerate to stop growth. Tray units with lid/tray make excellent crispers.
  7. Scrub tray thoroughly before reusing.
Sprouting times vary according to type of seed.
Sprouts are an extremely cost-effective way to get your fill of vitamins, minerals and enzymes.
They’re far cheaper than high-quality supplements or organic vegetables from 2,000 miles away. Eating them may be the safest and best way of getting outlandishly fresh produce with no risk of contamination.
And who knows? Besides their load of vitamins, you may find yourself able to shed a few pounds too. Why not give it a try?

Warning to Men on Drugs for Enlarged Prostate: They've been Linked to Cancer!

    Some of the latest news about some popular prostate drugs links them to cancer. If confirmed true, it's disastrous news indeed, because about half of all men in their sixties have enlarged prostate (BPH), and as many as 90 percent of men in their seventies and eighties suffer from it.

    American men are bombarded day and night with commercials urging us to take prescription drugs for BPH, and millions have heeded the call.

    Are we in the middle of a massive health catastrophe? Let's take a look. I also have somegood news about BPH and cancer, and you don't see much of that, so keep reading!

    In June 2011, the Food and Drug Administration issued an official warning1 about an increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer linked to the drugs finasteride (Proscar) and dutasteride (Avodart).

    They even went on to update the Warnings and Precautions section of labels for this class of drugs known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (alpha blockers).

    Just so you're clear on some of the brand names, Avodart, Jalyn, and Proscar are approved to treat symptoms of prostate swelling — benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH.

    And small doses of another drug, Propecia, are approved to treat hair loss in men. Propecia and Proscar are both brand names for finasteride.

    Dunno about you… but I'd think twice before swallowing anything that's sporting the "may cause cancer" label! I think I'd rather go bald, or deal with the frequent urination caused by BPH.

    Now if you have a taste for irony, you'll love this: Just a few months before this announcement, the FDA put the kybosh on plans to market these drugs as ones that could help PREVENT prostate cancer!

    For a change, Big Pharma got a much-needed smackdown in December 2010.

    GlaxoSmithKline, maker of dutasteride (brand name Avodart), wanted to add language to the label indicating the drug's ability to reduce prostate cancer risk in men who:
  • Had a prior negative biopsy, and
  • Have an elevated PSA.
    Instead, the FDA Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee voted 17-0 that GlaxoSmithKline's dutasteride and Merck's finasteride should NOT be used to prevent prostate cancer. Why?

    They said the drugs had been linked to a higher incidence of high-grade tumors. At least now we'll be spared a barrage of commercials claiming these drugs are cancer answers.

    The FDA decided that any benefits seen in the reduction of less-risky tumors were outweighed by the development of more life-threatening cancers is some subjects.

    Despite the risks from these drugs, many men still take them when seeking relief from a swollen prostate. Here's why…
Are you battling a bulging prostate?
    Here are a few key facts to know about your prostate gland:
  • It's about the size of a walnut and located just under your bladder
  • It surrounds part of the urethra—the tube that carries urine from the bladder and out of the body
  • Thousands of prostate cells supply fluids that are part of semen
  • The prostate has two major growth spurts -- during puberty and in your young manhood
    A healthy, mature prostate should remain the size of a walnut. At most, a healthy prostate may grow to the size of a small plum.

    But if your prostate grows much bigger than that (as most do, the older you get), then you can experience serious discomfort and problems with urination.

    What's worse, an overgrown prostate can put the squeeze on nerves that help control your erections. This can make it difficult—if not impossible—to perform sexually.

    But here's a good question (and one I've often wondered about): Does BPH mean you're at greater risk of cancer? Not necessarily…
BPH doesn't mean cancer
    Keep in mind that the "B" in BPH stands for "benign." It means the growth is non-cancerous. Scientists have not been able to determine for sure whether prostate swelling is a precursor to prostate cancer.

    All the same, BPH symptoms can mimic those related to malignant abnormal cell growth, such as:
  • Slow or weak urine stream
  • Pushing or straining to begin passing urine
  • Blood in your urine caused by straining to void
    In time, these problems can cause your bladder to become more irritable… to contract even when it only has a small amount of urine… and give you more frequent and sudden urges to pee. No doubt you've seen those commercials with older men dashing for the nearest restroom all day long, or getting up several times a night to urinate.

    It's annoying. But it's not cancer.

    And here's more good news if you're experiencing any of these symptoms…
Dangerous drugs are NOT your only option!
    Prescriptions for BPH drugs can be expensive and may produce unwanted side effects such as headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and even sudden fainting. A large number of men also report a loss of sex drive, and some say it doesn't come back even after they stop taking the drug.

    I would avoid taking BPH drugs. And in fact I DO avoid it. I'm in the midst of trying the most widely recommended natural solutions for BPH. No success so far, I have to tell you. But I do know they work for some men. They're worth a try. And meanwhile I'm going to keep looking for one that works for me.

  1. Saw Palmetto— According to the American Family Physician Journal, many studies have proven saw palmetto remarkably effective at shrinking an enlarged prostate. No guarantees, but some men do have success with it.
  2. Selenium—Dr. Larry Clark of the University of Arizona headed a landmark 10-year study which showed selenium reduced abnormal cell growth in the prostate by a remarkable 63 percent.
  3. Nettleeliminates up to 86 percent of prostate symptoms! According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, Urtica dioica—or stinging nettle—has been called a natural finasteride for slowing prostate cell growth. I haven't tried this yet, but it's on my list.
  4. Pumpkin seedsreduce prostate-enlarging DHT! According to Preventionmagazine, the phytosterols in pumpkin seeds may help shrink the prostate. These seeds contain chemicals that prevent testosterone from changing into DHT. High levels of DHT are associated with an enlarged prostate.
    There are a number of high-quality supplements that contain some or all of these (and many other natural substances) to help keep your prostate growth in check.

    When you hear the words E. coli, the first thing you probably think of is food poisoning. And you wouldn't be wrong—given that some strains of the bacteria have been linked to food recalls and serious illness.

    Well, it might surprise you to learn there are harmless strains of the Escherichia colibacteria that are a normal part of your intestinal flora — the "good" bacteria in your colon.

    In fact, the good strains of E. coli can help you by producing vitamin K, a valuable nutrient that's only recently started to get the attention it deserves (I take it as a supplement every day). E. coli can also keep harmful bacteria from setting up camp in your intestines.

    New research suggests that the normally harmless E. coli may change its nature if your gut is inflamed.

    It seems that patients with inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS) develop colorectal cancer at significantly higher rates than people who don't have this digestive problem.

    And one study from scientists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill links this phenomenon with the presence of a strain of E. coli.

    Christian Jobin, PhD, associate professor in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, led a team that raised mice with a gene mutation that makes them susceptible to inflammatory bowel disease.

    After rearing the mice in germ-free cages, the scientists moved them to cages where bacteria-filled mice formerly lived.

    According to results published in the journal Science, five months later, all of the mutant mice had developed bowel disease.

    What's more, the researchers found that 60 to 80 percent of the animals had developed colon cancer!

    One common thread in the mutant mice was that they'd all developed a gut environment containing a much higher than normal proportion of E. coli.

    And one E. coli strain that stood out was NC101, which was linked to aggressive forms of bowel disease in mice. This E. coli bacterium also produces the DNA-damaging protein colibactin.

    In addition to these harmful bacteria, the researchers also found strains of E. coli in the gut that did not make colibactin.

    These other bacteria were associated with bowel disease—but did not contribute to tumor formation.
How does this relate to colon cancer in humans?
    Humans also can harbor the bacteria that produce colibactin. The North Carolina investigators found these bacteria at the following levels:
  • In 20 percent of 24 healthy people
  • In 40 percent of 35 people with inflammatory bowel disease
  • In two-thirds of 21 people with colorectal cancer.
    These are small samples, but if the rates hold up for the whole population, the findings indicate that people with IBS and colorectal cancer are infected with this damaging strain ofE. coli at much higher rates.

    The findings also indicate that many healthy people harbor this bug with no apparent problems. I'm willing to venture they can do this because they have strong immune systems plus plenty of "good" gut bacteria to keep the "bad" bacteria in check.

    As to how the colibactin-producing bacteria lead to cancer—Jobin's team isn't completely sure.

    One thought is that gut inflammation causes colibactin-producing strains to multiply.

    At the same time, these proteins can cause cells lining the stomach to weaken—leaving them wide open to DNA damage.

    Given enough time, cells subjected to these conditions can turn cancerous.

    In essence, the study results suggest a direct link between changes in the gut microbiome (the total ecosystem of gut bacteria) and the development of inflammation and cancer.

    Jobin said doctors could possibly construct a personalized plan for cancer prevention for each patient. This would involve using DNA sequencing to find microbes in a patient's guts that could produce cancer-causing genes.

    The doctors could then use antibiotics to eliminate these microbes or encourage the use of probiotics to destroy cancer promoting bacteria. Readers of this newsletter know I'm opposed to the use of antibiotics in all but the most dire circumstances.

    The use of probiotics plus healthy eating habits (more fresh fruits and vegetables, few refined carbs) should create a healthy balance of gut bacteria in most people.

    It's important to understand that ALL of us have disease-causing microbes in our bodies, and we handle them just fine if we eat right and support our immune system.
Scientists across the pond have found a
different way to use E. coli
    Remember, there are various strains of the E. coli bacteria. British researchers are working on a genetically altered strain of the virus as a possible treatment.

    Their idea is to tinker with an E.coli bacterium to make it target and destroy cancer tumors.

    Scientists at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham have managed to alter one strain of the virus to make it harmless to healthy human cells—while serving as an assassin to cancer cells.

    A Daily Mail article describes how doctors used a common cold virus to deliver the E. colibacteria to the cancer cells.

    Simply put, the scientists have managed to arrest the poisons in E. coli until they reach the inside of cancer cells.

    According to Dr. Nick James, the oncologist who coordinated the therapy trials, the researchers are targeting men who have been treated for prostate cancer, but experienced a recurrence of the disease.

    Additional trials are underway to determine how this therapy could be helpful to patients with cancers of the head and neck, kidneys and liver.

    So depending on the strain, E.coli may be either a cancer cause or a cancer cure. More research is needed on both angles before we know for sure. But you can be sure that eating plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables is one of the best ways to sweep gunk out of your colon.

    Not only will it help you maintain a 'smooth move' in your bowels—but it could also help protect you from disease-producing germs and bacteria.

    Before I tell you about these natural air purifiers, let's take a moment to consider WHY you need them. What are these invasive pollutants lurking around your home just waiting to steal your last breath?
A trio of undesirable houseguests
    According to Barry Jones, author of Home, Sweet Toxic Home, toxins in your home typically will fall into the following three main categories:
  1. Airborne particles—such as dust, lint, mites, pet dander and mold spores; these invaders are just small enough to be breathed into your lungs, which makes it harder to cough them up
  2. Biological contaminants—include bacteria and viruses, which can travel on the airborne particles
  3. Household products—air fresheners, dryer sheets, cleaning products and pesticides are just a few of the products that many folks regularly use—all the while introducing toxic chemicals into their homes
    It can be a little scary to think of the number of ways toxins in these categories affect your indoor air quality.

    For example, many folks use toilet cleaning crystals to fight buildup of mildew and stains. But while these chemicals are doing their magic wipe down, they're also leaving behind carcinogenic chlorine gas!

    These noxious fumes also can be a problem when you take hot showers in water treated with this chemical (and most water from public systems is). You're essentially inhaling a cancer-causing gas as part of your daily hygiene.

    And let's just pray there are no asbestos or lead pipes in your plumbing system! The last thing you need is for those particles to go airborne and lodge themselves in your lungs.

    Do you have carpeting on your floors? That's a whole other way to introduce pollutants into your home.

    The glue used to set new carpets contains the known carcinogens benzene and xylene. These volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are chemicals that are known to cause a variety of respiratory problems and have also been linked to cancer.

    Have you fallen in love with those scented, plug-in air fresheners that keep your home smelling like apples and cinnamon or freshly laundered clothes?

    Well, they're also delivering a steady stream of scented formaldehyde into your air! Some friends of mine recently moved into a house where the previous owners were wild for these plug-in perfumeries. The smell lingered and was very hard to get out.

    Long-term exposure to this chemical can cause eye, nose and throat irritation. And some evidence exists that constant formaldehyde exposure boosts your risk of developing nose and lung cancers.
Watch out for these building materials
    Air fresheners are not the only offenders. Some types of home-building materials — mainly pressed wood products — are often made with formaldehyde. Pressed wood products for indoor use include particle board, used as sub-flooring and in cabinetry and furniture, and also hardwood plywood paneling, used in cabinetry and furniture, as well as in decorative wall coverings.

    The website of the Environmental Protection Agency identifies "medium density fiberboard" as being the highest formaldehyde-emitting pressed wood product. All these "fake woods" are pervasive in modern homes.

    Egad, what's a health-conscious homeowner to do? Remember, it's not just about avoiding cancer at some vague date years in the future. It's about feeling good now. How many mystery medical problems can be explained by all these toxins we're exposed to? (I can give you the answer from personal experience: A lot.)

    You could always peel off a few hundred dollar bills to purchase an air purifier. These machines use filters to remove harmful particles from the air before they can do maximum damage to your health.

    But if you don't want to spend that kind of cash, don't worry! There may be an even simpler solution for you…

    Dr. B.C. Wolverton, author of How to Grow Fresh Air — 50 Houseplants that Purify Your Home or Office, conducted studies for NASA that concluded that plants can clean pollutants in homes.

    Wolverton's study rated plants on a scale from one to 10, based on criteria such as:
  • Ability to remove chemical vapors or indoor air toxins
  • Ease of growth and maintenance
  • Rate at which water evaporates from the leaves.
  • Resistance to insect infestation
    The NASA-funded comparison yielded this list of top 10 plants for removing contaminants like benzene, carbon monoxide and formaldehyde from the air:
  1. Areca palm— also called the "butterfly palm," this plant can grow to as high as 12 feet and prefers a humid area
  2. Lady palm—grows slowly but is one of the easiest palms to cultivate
  3. Bamboo palm—also called a "reed palm" and prefers indirect light
  4. Rubber plant—also known as "ficus robusta" and grows very well indoors
  5. Dracaena (Janet Craig) —these plants grow best in bright, indirect sunlight shining from east to west
  6. Philodendron—one of the heartiest house plants that needs to be misted regularly and planted in soil that's kept evenly moist
  7. Dwarf date palm—grows best in sunny locations free from drafts; be aware that it grows needle-like spines near the base of the leaf stem that can poke through skin and clothing
  8. Ficus alii—prefers a humid environment with low to medium light; will lose foliage if placed near heating or air conditioning vents; this is a virtual weed in the tropics but up north it's a fussy house plant that doesn't like to be moved
  9. Boston fern—grows feathery ferns that prefer bright indirect sunlight
  10. Peace lily—prefers indirect sunlight and high humidity
    Wolverton's research showed that when these top performers and other plants were placed in sealed chambers with specific chemicals, the plants went to work removing those chemicals from the chambers!

This treatment definitely has some advantages

    Proton therapy isn't even a new breakthrough, although the public didn't get interested till recently.

    The therapy was initially prompted by Dr. James Slater of Massachusetts General, who first started harvesting protons from a Harvard cyclotron in the early 1960s. Dr. Slater had been disheartened by the side effects of radiation treatment (using X-rays) and has since devoted most of his professional life to bringing proton-based treatments to medical facilities.

    Proton therapy itself is fairly simple. It uses a beam of protons to inject a tumor with radiation. Protons are one of the three main particles that make up atoms (the other two are electrons and neutrons). Protons have a positive charge while electrons have a negative charge.

    Like X-rays, protons wreck the genetic makeup of a tumor. More importantly, proton therapy is much more precise than other radiation therapies, but without the side effects.

    For example, when a patient undergoes X-ray treatment, tissues surrounding the tumor site are easily destroyed. The side-effects and resulting sickness can be overwhelming.

    But in proton therapy, the stream of charged particles can be tailored to the contours of the tumor, without affecting any tissues except the tumor.

    Unfortunately (and like too many things in the medical industry), proton therapy suffers from a money bias. Construction costs for a proton-beam generator can top $200 million, making it the most expensive medical device ever invented.

    One of the reasons the treatment is so expensive is that protons aren't exactly easy to harvest. For proton therapy, protons must be stripped from hydrogen atoms and then moved into a stream that is nearly as fast as the speed of light.

    The device that makes this possible weighs around 220 tons and must be housed in a structure at least the size of a football field. So, beyond the cost of the machine itself come considerable construction expenses for any hospital toying with the idea of offering this treatment.

But here's the worst problem of all. . .

    Proton therapy involves spending a stupefying amount of money on something that doesn't necessarily work better than other prostate cancer treatments. Anthony Zietman, MD, of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and past president of the American Society for Radiation Oncology, has gone on record saying proton therapy is a very good treatment for prostates, but "It just doesn't appear to be superior treatment."

    In the world of peer-reviewed journals, they won't be able to say whether proton therapy deserves all the rave reviews it's gotten until somebody puts together a decade-long, randomized trial to see which treatments have the best outcome overall.

    In the meantime, the Internet has become a serious hindrance to spreading accurate information about this treatment. Loads of blogs and websites run by men who had success with their own proton treatment laud the benefits of proton therapy. I don't deny that they have good intentions. Many of these enthusiastic Internet writers feel proton therapy was the best and only cure for their prostate cancers.

    Plus, men love the fact that's it's non-invasive. Who wouldn't? After all, few things shake a man's pride like the idea of losing bladder function or becoming impotent. A man's well-being after conventional radiation or surgery can be very poor indeed.

    But the buzz reminds me of prime-time commercials from the pharmaceutical industry (although more honest, I hope). When you see a commercial for the latest and greatest pill, featuring happy people evangelizing a drug, it's hard not to wonder if it might work for you.

    Just remember, the bloggers are comparing proton therapy to conventional radiation and surgery. To be fair, it IS an improvement — a very expensive one. But why go there at all?

    The problem in this case is that too many websites are written by guys who aren't aware of the costs-versus-benefits of this treatment, much less the benefits of alternative cancer treatments. They're excited by the high-level technology — the ultimate power tool for guys — and they give false hope to millions of men searching the Internet for legitimate answers.

    The bias for proton therapy technology continues to grow with time, making it hard to put together any kind of a reliable study on outcomes. Researchers are finding that men who went in thinking proton treatment was superior, who then have unexpected and unnecessary side effects, still advocate proton therapy as the best choice they could have made.

    Marketers call it "post-purchase dissonance." When people have made an important choice, they have to convince themselves they did the right thing. If the purchase is a let-down, some people go into denial and still insist they made a good choice.

    And remember, as with most medical therapies these days, the advice you get from doctors is subject to a ton of bias. Dr. Zietman, while being interviewed for an article in Men's Health last year, said, "In the absence of knowledge, anything goes. Surgeons recommend their favorite surgery. Radiation oncologists recommend their favorite form of radiation."

    It follows that oncologists smitten with cool technology — and with making money — recommend proton therapy.

Money-driven healthcare, the vampire
that's sucking the life out of our country

    What's obvious here is that the least expensive option for treating early-stage prostate cancer rarely gets lip service from the experts. Officially, it's called "active surveillance." You may know it as "watchful waiting."

    Watchful waiting boils down to closely monitoring a patient and watching for any signs of growth in his cancer. If there's no growth, there's no treatment. If there is growth, the patient gets treated. Most prostate tumors are slow-growing. There's no pressing need to take action. And there are dozens of safe nutrients, foods and herbal remedies a man can use to control or eliminate prostate tumors without resorting to radiation, chemotherapy and surgery at all. I gave readers my take on all this in my Special Report, Don't Touch My Prostate.

    Proton treatment sounds to me like technology-driven medicine gone crazy. Frightened people with cancer are willing to buy into any kind of nonsense recommended by the men in white coats, and of course we all get handed the bill.

    Medical care is the single biggest expense driving the country into bankruptcy and potential social and political collapse. Meanwhile, to the doctors and industrialists meting out the treatments, there are massive profits to be had treating prostate cancer with protons.

    Proton therapy isn't worthless. Far from it. It actually shows more reliable promise for treating brain, eye, and spinal cord tumors, as well as certain kinds of tumors in children.

    But treating something like childhood cancers requires multiple, lengthy sessions and insurance companies are loath to cover it.

    Prostate patients, on the other hand, are in and out in 20 minutes and need fewer total treatments. Medicare and most insurance companies cover the cost without hassle. And there are a lot of prostate cancer cases to funnel through the system.

    It's healthcare dictated by money, which is the worst kind.

    I should point out that even with the heavy emphasis on proton therapy as a miracle cure, it's hard to come by. Only 1% of radiation oncologists in the U.S. have experience in proton therapy. And right now, there are only nine proton centers in operation (though eight more are in development, which shows how the medical industry is responding to demand).

Sometimes the best healthcare means bucking the trends

    Conclusive studies are a long way off. But for now, the best information we can find is that proton treatment is not much better than standard radiation treatment — just more expensive and more techno-fancy.

    I admit, it's hard to beat claims like those made by Loma Linda Medical Center on their website's "Proton Therapy for Prostate Cancer" page: "More accurate, non-invasive, painless, provided in an outpatient setting, little impact on energy level, and requires no recovery."

    But don't be so sure it's a good choice. There are many, many easy alternative treatments I'd try first.
