We can be full of ideas about who we want to meet and socialize with, but if those ideas are our own and not God’s, we can end up in a bad relationship. People aren’t always what they appear to be. Letting the Holy Spirit lead the way gives us discernment to make the right decisions and steer clear of people who aren’t right for us. “But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God” (1 Corinthians 2:10).
We live in a culture that has an “I want it now” mindset; this can cost us dearly when looking for a potential spouse. Impatience causes us to depend on ourselves, and act on our own worldly knowledge. The fear of never finding anyone can cloud our judgment, but having confidence that God has set aside a match for us puts our search in a whole new perspective. “So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded” (Hebrews 10:35, NIV).
This promise doesn’t just pertain to the future; God is speaking into our lives right now. He loves us and knows what we want most. His will is for us to trust that He wants to bless us with loving, fulfilling relationships. When we feel the world’s mindsets pushing in on us, actively resisting and maintaining our peace of mind is hard work. “Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it” (Hebrews 4:1, NIV).
The potential for human error is always present if we trust our own wisdom to find that special person. When we’re spinning our wheels with no results, asking God to intervene turns things around. In the Old Testament, God promised His people good things they didn’t earn; He kept that promise. “And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not, And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full; Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage” (Deuteronomy 6:10-12). Trusting that God will bless our relationships causes His promises to work for us as well.
