Bulldog Women Finish Third, Men Seventh in CIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State women’s team had five podium finishes with the Bulldogs 4x400 relay team of Zuwena Johnson, Kyaja Williams, Krystal Simpson and Abigail Hunt leading the way placing first overall with a time of 3:51.76.  Alexa Stewart, Krystal Simpson, Kyaja Williams and Amaree’ Yates made up BSU 4x100 relay team that finished second with a time of 46.83. 

The Bulldogs duo of Alexa Stewart and De’Sha Manago claimed third place finishes. Stewart competed the 100 meter finals with a time of 12.32 while Manago had a throw of 42.36m in the discus finals. Simpson and Yates also had top 10 finishes in the women’s 100 and 200 meter finals.


Zuwena Johnson and Kayla Wright placed fourth and seventh respectively in the 800 meter finals, crossing the finish line with times of 2:19.93 and 2:28.76. Johnson and Wright finished sixth and seventh respectively in the 1500 meter finals with times of 5:04.59 and 5:09.60.

Other individual top 10 finishers for the women include Telicia Farmer (5th), Wright (6th) and Cionne Gourrier (8th) in the 3000 meter run, Kaylia Brown (6th) in the 400 meter hurdles and Soljala Jones in the high jump (3rd) and long jump (4th). Jones also had an eighth place finish in the triple jump. Bowie State had two top finishers in the shot put as Jaelyn Belt paced seventh overall (12.13m) and Jordan McDonald was ninth (11.57m).

As a team, the BSU women finished third, amassing 87.5 points.  Saint Augustine’s claimed the title with a team total of 157 points.

On the men’s side, Bashir Lamptey and Kenny Fuentez were awarded medals at the podium on Sunday (5/6) as Bowie State’s top individual finishers. Lamptey finished second in the 110 hurdles (15.00) and fifth in the 100 meter finals (11.03) while Fuentez was second overall in the discus (43.62m).

Jalen Sykes competed the 400 meter finals, placing fifth with a time of 48.99.

The Bulldog men (Jarius Brooks, Bashir Lamptey, O’shai Powers and Xavier Williams) placed fourth overall in the 4x100 relay with a 42.87. BSU’s 4x400 relay team consisting of Sykes, Powers, Lamptey and Robert Thomas finished fifth with a time of 3:21.09. Thomas who placed eighth in the 800 meter finals (2:10.91) and men’s javelin finals (40.18m).

Other top 10 individual finishers include Juantre Rush (9th) in the 5000 meter run (17:52.55) and Hamidou Mapangala (9th) in the shot put (12.87m).

Bowie State’s men placed seventh overall, scoring 35 points.  St. Augustine’s won the men’s championship, their 21st consecutive CIAA title, collecting 202 points.
