Softball Drops Two at No. 21 West Chester, 8-1 and 8-0

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – No. 21 West Chester University improved its season record to 29-7 following a pair of non-conference wins over Bowie State University on Wednesday afternoon by scores of 8-1 and 8-0. The setbacks put the Bowie State record at 12-14 overall.

Juniors Lindsey Fenner (Aberdeen, Md.), Jacqueline Pickering (Bowie, Md.), Nicoleen Ochoa (Madison, Ohio) and Inaya Jones (Baltimore, Md.) along with sophomore Megan Visele (Great Mills, Md.) tallied one hit each over the twinbill.

West Chester was led by Sara Ercolani with four hits over the two games and Sarah Walasavage, Emily Maseth and Bri Garber accounted for three hits apiece.

After three scoreless innings in game one, West Chester plated three runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. A double by Ercolani double to right center scored Walasavage from second for the 1-0 lead. Another Golden Rams double, this time by Maseth scoring Caroline Adams and Ercolani for a 3-0 advantage.

West Chester’s Cat Hammer stroked a single through the right side of the Bowie State defense to push Garber across the dish. Pinch hitter Courtney Stump’s ground out to second scored Wallasavage for a 5-0 lead after five innings.

The Bulldogs scored its lone run in the top of 6th inning following a solo homer by Fenner, her collegiate first, but Bowie State trailed 5-1. Bowie State managed just two hits in the opener and Ochoa took the loss in the circle. Ochoa gave up 11 hits but struck out four.

The Golden Rams added their final three runs of game one in their portion of the 6th inning on three hits (all singles) to account for the 8-1 final. 

In game two, West Chester put two on the board in the in the top of the first inning and broke the game open in the bottom of the 2nd inning following a Wallasavage grand slam.

West Chester’s Golden Rams added two insurance runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning to close out the game at 8-0. Amanda Houck pitched five innings in game two, striking out nine to earn the victory.

Bowie State’s Ray pitched four innings in the nightcap, allowing 11 hits and struck out two.

Bowie State returns home to host Goldey-Beacom College on Friday (4/14) in a non-conference doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
