ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bowie State University women's track and field team opened the 2016-2017 indoor season at the U.S. Naval Academy Lid-Lifter on Thursday afternoon.
Even though the Bulldogs did not factor in the team scoring, Krystal Simpson placed 8th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.11. Simpson was also a part of Bowie State’s 4x400 meter relay team that included Kayla Tucker, Jasmyne Sanchious and Kayla Wright that finished 11th overall, crossing the finish line at 4:14.35. Sanchious competed in the 200 meter dash, finishing the race with a time of 26.00 and 20th place.
The Bulldogs combo of Kennedeigh Hairston and Jimmica Yarbrough finished 10th and 11th respectively in the 500 meter dash with times of 1:26.15 and 1:31.19. Bowie State’s tandem of Kayla Wright and Zuwena Johnson finished back to back in the 800 meter run. Wright placed 11th (2:29.98) and Johnson was 12th (2:31.26)
Jaylen Belt and Alicia Grant were the Bulldogs’ two field event competitors in the shot put. Belt was Bowie State’s top finisher overall, placing 6th with a personal-best throw of 11.54m while Grant heaved the shot put 8.96m for a 14th place finish.
“I was truly impressed with our ladies even though we appeared nervous and afraid running on a bank track” said head coach Michelle Latimer. “The team showed true unity … In the words of Zig Ziglar “It was character that got us out the bed, commitment that moved us into action and discipline that enable us to follow through.”
Bowie State women’s track and field is off until they return to competition on Friday, January 13th at Saint Thomas Aquinas.
