Bowie State Softball Defeats Virginia State 2-0, 2-1 in CIAA Doubleheader

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State University softball team picked up two big CIAA Northern Division wins on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Virginia State University 2-0 (6 innings) and 2-1 (8 innings) to take sole possession of second place within the division. The wins improve Bowie State’s record to 11-17 overall, 7-3 in CIAA play and 3-1 in the division.

Sophomore Nicoleen Ochoa (Madison, Ohio) paced the Lady Bulldogs with four hits over the two games and freshman Jaelyn Belt (Glen Burnie, Md.) finished with three hits. Sophomores Jacqueline Pickering (Bowie, Md.) and Emily Lewis (Aberdeen, Md.) recorded a pair of hits each while freshmen Madison Margas (Stevensville, Md.), Tiffany Bearns (Lusby, Md.) and senior Danielle Watt (St. Leonard, Md.) tallied one hit each for Bowie State. Sophomore Stefanie Ray earned wins in both games in the circle for the Lady Bulldogs.

Virginia State (10-16, 7-4 CIAA, 2-3 North) was led by Dominique Mulero (Chatham, Va.) with two hits in six at bats. McKenzie Love (Shippensburg, Pa.) took the pitching loss in game one, allowing eight hits while Lindsey Wilkins (Nelson, Va.) entered game two in relief in the bottom of the seventh inning with the scored tied at 1-all to take the loss.

The Lady Bulldogs were scheduled to play at Lincoln (Pa.) on Saturday (4/16) but this conference doubleheader has been postponed until further notice. Bowie State will play its final regular season home contests on Sunday (4/17), hosting West Chester University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
