BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State University ended their 2014 season with a two-game sweep of conference foe Shaw University, beating the Lady Bears 5-0 and 9-7. The Lady Bulldogs finish the year with an overall record of 9-25 and 7-9 mark in the conference.
Junior Cassandra Clayborne (Damascus, Md.) paced the Lady Bulldogs with five hits over two games with senior Adria Lewis (Cumberland, Md.) adding four hits to the stat sheet. Lewis also led Bowie State with three RBI and three runs scored.

Shaw (4-24, 3-12 CIAA) was led by Shanice Anderson (Oceanside, Calif.) with five hits and four other Lady Bears recorded two hits each. Daniela Archibold (Bogota D.C. Columbia) took the loss in game one and Anderson took the loss in the circle in game two.

In the first game, the Lady Bulldogs scored three in the first inning and were never threatened. Senior Mariela Hernandez (Del Rio, Texas) allowed just three hits and struck out seven over seven innings in the circle.

Clayborne hit a leadoff triple to right center and freshman Hailey Bethke (Havre de Grace, Md.) followed with a single to right, scoring Clayborne. Freshman Stefanie Ray (Damascus, Md.) stepped up and laced a single to left field, advancing Bethke to second with no outs. Lewis stroked a 2-RBI shot down the left field line, scoring Ray and Bethke and created a 3-0 Lady Bulldogs lead.

A Hernandez double in the 3rd inning pushed Lewis across the dish for a 4-0 Bowie State advantage. Lewis reached after her second double of the afternoon.

The Lady Bulldogs added their final run of game one in the bottom of the 6th inning following a Bethke single that scored senior Kiara Washington (Bowie, Md.).

Clayborne was responsible for four of Bowie State’s 11 hits in the opening game while Bethke and Lewis adding a pair of hits each.

The Shaw Lady Bears made game two very interesting taking a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the second inning. With the scored tied 1-1 after one, Shaw capitalized on several Bowie State fielding miscues and scored four runs on five hits.

Bowie State was able to get one run back in the bottom of the second only to have the Lady Bears tack two runs on in the top of the 3rdinning to take a 7-2 lead.

However, the Lady Bulldogs maintained their composure and rallied to score five suns in the bottom of the 33rd inning on just three hits to knot the score at 7-all.
