RICHMOND, Va. – The Bowie State Lady Bulldogs entered Wednesday's contest at Virginia Union on a six-game losing streak, but came up victorious by a score of 51-49.

Juniors Donia Naylor (Washington, D.C.) and Ashley Castle (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a team-high 10 points each and graduate student Ashley Davis (Odenton, Md.) added nine, to pace the Lady Bulldogs who improve to 7-9 overall, 2-6 CIAA and 1-1 in the Northern Division. Graduate student

Virginia Union (4-12, 1-7 CIAA, 0-2 North) finished the game shooting (16-of-60) from the floor for 26.7 percent, including 6-of-20 from three-point range for 30 percent. Ashle Freeman (Richmond, Va.) went 4-for-10 from beyond the arc.

Melyse Brown (Halifax, Va.) scored a game-high 17 points for VUU’s Lady Panthers, who drop to 4-11 overall, 1-6 in the CIAA and 0-2 in the North.

Bowie State finished the game shooting 17-of-50 (34 percent) from the field and made 5-of-19 3-pointers. The Lady Bulldogs

The Lady Bulldogs began the game with an 8-2 advantage at the first media timeout at the 14:43 mark. Bowie State pushed their lead to double-digits (23-13) following a layup by graduate student Ashley Davis (Odenton, Md.) with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half.

Turnovers were a sore spot for Bowie State in the first half as the Lady Trojans committed seven compared to eight for Virginia Union.  Over half of those Bowie State’s turnovers were unforced.

Bowie State’s defense held Virginia Union to 5-of-27 shooting from the field (18.5 percent). The Lady Panthers kept it close if you will, by converting 7-of-12 free throws in the first period. Bowie State on the other hand, made 10-of-30 from the field and was a perfect 8-of-8 at the free throw line.

Virginia Union opened the second half with a 13-5 run which included three 3-pointers. The Lady Panthers struggled behind the arc in the first half, making 1-of-11.

A short jumper from the elbow by Brown pulled the Lady Panthers within one and a breakaway layup by Freeman gave the home team their first lead of the game at 35-34.

A Naylor free throw and layup by Castle shifts the advantage back over to Bowie State at 37-35. Following a media timeout, graduate student Brooke Miles (Upper Marlboro, Md.) scored her first points of the game to give the Lady Bulldogs a little breathing room at 40-35.

The Lady Panthers pulled to within one (48-47) with 1:39 left in the game on a Freeman 3-pointer and had a chance to create an overtime, but the Lady Bulldogs defense held up.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Saturday (1/25) hosting the Hawks of Chowan University at 2 pm.
