Bowie State Bulldogs Clinch CIAA North Crown with 89-77 Win at Elizabeth City State

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. - The Bowie State University men's basketball team closed out its 2014-15 regular season with an 89-77 victory over Elizabeth City State University on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 21-7 overall, 13-3 in league play and 8-2 in the North. The win also clinches the CIAA Northern Division title for the Bulldogs.

Senior and CIAA Player of the Year Cameron Knox led five Bowie State players in double-figures with a team-high 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field. Freshman Dayshawn Wells (Baltimore, Md.) netted a career-high 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and junior Andre Jackson (Baltimore, Md.) added 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

Junior Justin Beck (Ellicott City, Md.) and freshman Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in 11 points apiece in the win.

Elizabeth City State (9-20, 2-14 CIAA, 0-10 North) was led by Brachon Griffin with a game-high 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting to go along with six rebounds, four assists and a game-high five steals. Darrell Ward notched a double-double of 19 and 10 rebounds for the Vikings and added five assists, two blocks and three steals. John Tatum recorded 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field.

The Bulldogs led by as much as 17 in the first half (42-25) before a Griffin layup at the 2:09 mark stopped the run. Elizabeth City State closed the first half with a 12-5 run to set the score at 47-37 in favor of Bowie State at the break.

Both teams shot the ball well in the first 20 minutes. Elizabeth City State made 15-of-27 from the field (55.6 percent) while Bowie State made 66.7 percent of their field goals (18-of-27), which included 10-of-16 (62.5 percent) beyond the arc.

Bowie State opened the second half with a 22-7 burst to take a game-high 19 point lead (65-46) by the 12:09 mark and maintained a double-digit lead until Elizabeth City State made one final push.

The Vikings trimmed the deficit down to 81-75 with 4:18 remaining, outscoring the Bulldogs 15-6 over a four minute stretch. However, the Bowie State defense clamped down and ended the game with an 8-2 run to seal the deal.

Bench scoring was huge for Bowie State as the Bulldogs outscored the opponents bench 51-9.

The Bulldogs will have four days off from competition before opening CIAA Tournament quarterfinal play as the #1 seed in the Northern Division.

(BSU's) Proctor and Wilson Selected to CIAA All-Rookie Basketball Team

HAMPTON, Va. - The 2015 CIAA All-Rookie Basketball Teams along with their respective Rookies of the Year have been selected by the CIAA Sports Information Directors' Association. Bowie State’s Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) and Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) were named to the women and men’s All-Rookie Teams respectively.

The 2015 CIAA Women's Rookie of the Year is Breona Jones of Elizabeth City State University. Named the CIAA Rookie of the Week twice this season, Jones, a native of Henderson, North Carolina (Southern Vance HS), has had an outstanding rookie campaign having started in all 24 of ECSU’s games this season. She led all CIAA freshmen in minutes played, points scored and scoring average.  Jones scored in double figures seven times, matched a personal best of 4 steals three times and registered a career best 6 assists on three occasions.

Quincy January of St. Augustine's University has been voted 2015 CIAA Men's Rookie of the Year.  The Atlanta, Georgia (Riverdale HS) native was tabbed CIAA Rookie of the Week four times this season. He has scored in double figures in 16 of 25 games including nine straight from January 11 through February 12.  The high-leaping forward leads the CIAA in field goal percentage with many of his points coming on crowd pleasing dunks.

The Men's and Women's All-Rookie Basketball teams will be honored at the CIAA Tournament Tipoff Luncheon, Monday, February 23 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Bowie State's Cameron Knox Selected CIAA Men's Basketball Player of the Year

Hampton, Va. - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Men’s and Women’s Basketball Coaches and Sports Information Directors have selected the 2015 slate of All-Conference honorees. This season’s line-up features Men’s Player of the Year, Cameron Knox of Bowie State University and Verdine Warner of Shaw University as Women’s Player of the Year.

Knox, a senior forward from Baltimore, Maryland, is a three-time CIAA Player of the Week and leads the conference in points scored (461).  He ranks in the top 5 in field goals made, three pointers made, steals and points per game.  He has only one disqualification in the 26 games he started.

Warner, a native of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, West Indies, is second in the conference in scoring average, first in total points, first in rebounds per game, third in field goal percentage and tied for second in blocked shots per game.  She averaged 27.5 points per 40 minutes in the 27 games she's played.

Knox and Warner are joined by Tyrece Little (Virginia State) and Deja Middleton (Fayetteville State) as Defensive Players of the Year. All four honorees and their fellow All-Conference selectees will be formally recognized at the Men’s and Women’s Tip-Off Awards Luncheon scheduled for Monday, February 23 in Charlotte.

Firebirds Remain Locked at No. 4 for 3rd Straight Week in D2SIDA East Region Poll

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia women's basketball team remained No. 4 for the 3^rd straight week in the Week 13 D2SIDA East Region poll released today.

The Firebirds (21-3) won their 9^th and 10^th games in a row, respectively last week as they defeated the No. 8 ranked team in the region, Queens, 66-61 on Wednesday night, and Molloy, 79-61 on Saturday afternoon. They are currently No. 1 in the East Coast Conference standings – a league which also features the No. 7 and 8 ranked teams in the region – Roberts Wesleyan (16-5) and Queens (16-6) – as well as NYIT who is also receiving votes.

Fourteen of UDC's 21 wins (the 2^nd most wins in the East Region) have come by double-figures, and the Firebirds are 7-1 outside of conference play and 11-1 on the road this season. UDC also boasts a win over a top-25 ranked team as they dominated No. 25 Virginia St., 88-62  back on November 19^th.

Ahead of UDC are the same three Northeast-10 Conference teams from the previous two weeks: Stonehill, Adelphi and New Haven. Adelphi – which suffered a 66-61 loss at No. 5 Franklin Pierce last week, fell from No. 1 to No. 2 in the poll. The Panthers are 22-3 overall and ranked No. 9 in the most recent WBCA Top-25 national poll. Stonehill, previously ranked No. 2 in the poll, jumped Adelphi and moved to No. 1 in this week's East Region poll after a pair of home wins vs. Assumption (71-64) and Southern New Hampshire (64-49). The Skyhawks are currently No. 15 in WBCA National Poll and are 20-2 overall this season after clinching the NE-10 Northeast Division Regular Season Championship on Wednesday. New Haven stayed put at No. 3 in the poll after a pair of home wins vs. Le Le Moyne (80-64) and Pace (83-73).

UDC will visit Oakdale, NY on Wednesday night to take on ECC foe Dowling and then return home to host league foe Bridgeport on Saturday.

Lady Bulldogs Bowling Records Perfect 10-0 Record at CIAA Round-Up

Lady Bulldogs Bowling Records Perfect 10-0 Record at CIAA Round-Up

LAUREL, Md. – The Bowie State University women's bowling team finished with a perfect 10-0 record following the conclusion of the CIAA Bowling Round-Up held February 13-14 at AMF Laurel Lanes. The competition only consisted of two days of team matches. The third and final day of baker’s matches were cancelled due to inclement weather. COMPLETE RESULTS ATTACHED

All CIAA bowling institutions competed in the event, five from each division. The Lady Bulldogs went unbeaten against the five teams from the Southern Division and claimed first place out of the CIAA Northern Division schools with a total pin fall of 8,721.

Virginia State placed second overall with a 9-1 record followed by Elizabeth City State in third (8-2), Chowan fourth (6-4) and Fayetteville State rounded out the top five with a 5-5 record.

Virginia Union claimed 6^th place (5-5) while St. Augustine’s (4-6) and Shaw (2-8) finished 7^th and 8^th respectively. Johnson C. Smith finished in 9^thplace with a 1-9 record and Livingstone rounded out the field at 0-10. 

Bowie State breezed by Livingstone College in their opening match of the weekend by a score of 930-678. In matches two and three versus Saint Augustine’s University and Fayetteville State University, Bowie State recorded identical scores of 884. The Lady Bulldogs conquered SAU’s Lady Falcons 884-760 and squeezed out an 884-848 win against FSU’s Lady Broncos. Host Bowie State knocked off Shaw University 769-673 and posted a convincing 844-686 victory over Johnson C. Smith University to close out opening day.

Livingstone was the first team to fall to Bowie State on day two as the Lady Bulldogs punished the Lady Blue Bears 910-653. BSU crushed Johnson C. Smith 935-616 and followed that with an 877-648 whitewash of Shaw. Fayetteville State gave Bowie State their toughest match on Saturday, but the Lady Bulldogs edged the Lady Broncos 868-865. Bowie State finished day two with an 820-718 decision over Saint Augustine’s.

Senior Shayla Lightfoot (Henrico, Va.) finished with the second-highest average of all bowlers in each division. Lightfoot wrapped up the Round-Up with a team-high 183.40 average, which included a high-game of 210. Senior Ambrianna Bankston (Ft. Belvoir, Va.) ranked second on the team with a 179.67 average and a team-high game of 220.

Redshirt freshman Sierra Davis (Dayton, Ohio) rolled three 200+ games and averaged 178.78 over nine games. Keyandra Bankston (Ft. Belvoir, Va.) tallied 1551 total pins over nine games for a 172.33 average while junior Ashley Wade (Richmond, Va.) closed the weekend with a 166.10 average. Makyra Bankston (Ft. Belvoir, Va.) participated in three games, averaging 149.67 for the Lady Bulldogs.

Bowie State will return to the lanes on March 13-15 in Fayetteville, N.C. for CIAA North/South Event III.
