BOWIE, Md. - With the threat of inclement weather in the forecast, Bowie State softball's season opener twinbill originally slated for Sunday, Feb. 12 at Washington Adventist has been postponed.
Bowie State will now open the 2023 season at the HBCU Classic featuring teams from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). The Bulldogs will take on Edward Waters at 1 p.m. and Tuskegee at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17.

Big Games from Myers, Harris Not Enough in Bulldogs 69-51 Loss at Virginia Union
RICHMOND, VA -- Redshirt sophomore Katerra Myers and sophomore Anii Harris combined to score 31 total points, but the Bulldogs fell to the Virginia Union Lady Panthers 69-51 on the road Saturday afternoon in Barco-Stevens Hall.
The Bulldogs (13-10, 9-5 CIAA, 5-3 North) had two players score in double figures, led by Myers, who had 16 points and six rebounds. Harris added 15 points and two steals and sophomore Saniha Jackson added four points and nine rebounds.
Jackson pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Bowie State, grabbing 15 boards and turning them into 14 second chance points.
The Bowie State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 16 Virginia Union (13-13, 5-9 CIAA, 2-6 North) turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the other end of the floor. Junior Seanice Lyons led the way individually for the Bulldogs with two steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 16-8, Bowie State went on a 6-0 run with 1:49 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from graduate senior Jazmyne Scott, to narrow its deficit to 16-14, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
The Bulldogs continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 42-25 halftime deficit.
Bowie State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Bulldogs faced a 57-35 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Bowie State played well near the basket, scoring six of its 10 points in the paint.
The Lady Panthers kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 64-41 advantage before Bowie State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Jackson's layup, to shrink the deficit to 64-47 with 4:04 to go in the contest. Virginia Union responded and outscored the Bulldogs the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 69-51.

Bulldogs Lose Steam in Second Half, Falls 76-65 at Virginia Union
RICHMOND, VA --The Bowie State men's basketball team held a 37-35 lead at halftime but shot just 32-percent from the field in the second half, falling 76-65 to the Virginia Union Panthers on the road Saturday in Barco-Stevens Hall.
The Bulldogs (6-20, 4-10 CIAA, 2-6 North) had three players score in double figures, led by senior Quinton Drayton, who had 21 points. Freshman Warren Mouganda tacked on 11 points from the bench and junior Anthony Carpenter chipped in as well with 10 points and four assists from the bench.
Led by sophomore Caleb Johnson's two offensive rebounds, Bowie State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in six second chance points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 19-10, BSU went on a 14-0 run with 12:09 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Carpenter, to take a 24-19 lead. The Bulldogs then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 37-35 advantage. Bowie State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 37 points.
Virginia Union proceeded to take a 76-58 lead before BSU went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 76-63 with 30 seconds to go in the contest. The Bulldogs kept their comeback going, holding the lead with 16:31 left to play, but Virginia Union managed to hold on for the 76-65 win. Bowie State capitalized on six Panther turnovers in the period, collecting nine points off those turnovers.
