“And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man’s, who shall give you that which is your own?” (Luke 16:12).
Over my life I’ve met some interesting characters. I encountered several of them during my freshman year at Western Kentucky University. I was living in a boarding house, and two of the individuals living there were Chuck Gary from Central City and Bill Knight (my roommate) from Beechcreek. A few of Chuck’s friends from Muhlenberg County would often come over, and we would all hangout. Two of the ones I got to know well were Denny Slinker and Jerry Young. Most of our conversations revolved around basketball, booze, and girls.
“Joe Cool” is the best way to describe Chuck. With a cigarette dangling from the side of his mouth, he often talked about his many sexual exploits. To hear him tell it, he had relations with numerous women in Central City. If that were true, it would have been truly impressive since the town was known for attractive ladies. The reputation of the town was best summed up by a National Guard friend of mine when we were traveling through it. He turned to me and said, “This town has a lot of leg in it.” Chuck’s stories, however, may have been a bit overrated as one of his friends (I forgot which one) once said, “All those women Chuck brags about having are actually just street walkers.”
Chuck was pretty negative about the basketball players who had opposed him on the court. He would label them as snow birders, prima donnas, show boaters, etc. One person for which he did not show much respect was Billy Warren of Butler County. In high school Warren was considered one of the better guards in western Kentucky. As a junior and senior, he led his team to runner-up finishes in the Fourth Region. He was awarded a scholarship to Western and was on the same team as Clem Haskins and Dwight Smith, two of the school’s all-time greats. Billy was expected to be the guard who would guide them to great heights, but it was not to be. Haskins, Smith, and company did achieve great things, but Billy Warren was not a part of it.
There were some tragic rumors about Billy. His high school team was coached by his father who was known as a tough and fierce disciplinarian. The rumor was that the father put an unprecedented amount of pressure on his son. According to the way the story was told, Billy became withdrawn and maybe even hit the bottle a bit too much. Many questioned whether he had what it took to be a successful college athlete. Whatever the facts, he left the Western team after his freshman year.
One thing my buddies and I liked to do was play pool. Chuck fancied himself an expert at billiards, and I must confess he was pretty good. One day in 1964 when Billy Warren was still a Western Hilltopper, Chuck and I encountered him in one of the better pool halls in Bowling Green. We sat and watched as Billy came out on the losing end in a series of games. Chuck saw a chance to expose Billy further and immediately challenged him to a quarter a game. They played game after game; I’ve forgotten how many it was. Chuck lost everyone, and eventually he quit after running out of cash. Billy never ran the table, but he was very methodical and efficient in the way he played. He never bragged; in fact, I can’t remember him saying anything. All he did was win. Afterwards, Chuck was embarrassed and at a loss to explain what just happened. As we were leaving, he said to me, “I don’t get it; in the earlier games he was missing easy, straight-in shots.” What Chuck didn’t realize, but should have, is that is the way ‘the hustle’ works. Billy Warren gained my utmost respect on that particular day.
I received a bachelor's degree in 1967 and a master's degree in 1971 from Western Kentucky University. I taught school for 44 years. One year was spent at Fordsville High School, 17 at Ohio County High School, and 26 at Trinity High School in Whitesville. The subjects I taught were government, history, and English. At Trinity I also served as coach, athletic director, and dean of students. I fancy myself a fairly good writer, and my main interests are sports and politics.

Finding the Best Basketball Shoes For Kids
For those of you that love to play basketball and are a serious student, there is nothing better than finding the best basketball shoes. Basketball shoes are built for normal indoor courts, but because they are so versatile, they are also versatile enough to be worn on any outdoor court. Offices and schools all over the country have found that basketball shoes can greatly improve their performance and in turn their grades as well.
Most of us have shoes that are made for indoor courts that can easily handle different outdoor surfaces. But when you take a basketball to an outdoor court, things can get a little more slippery. It can be really hard to tell if the leather is real or not. If the leather is not 100% genuine, then it's not a very good quality shoe. Real leather is made with real animal hides. This means that the leather isn't damaged, and the soles will last a very long time.

Some companies that make basketball shoes for kids, like Nike, provide all of the necessary parts to assemble the shoe. Most kids will be able to get the shoe on their feet, and then throw it away after five minutes, so that they can keep getting another pair. later on. That's just not a good idea.
That's why finding the best basketball shoes for kids is so important. The shoes you are looking at should give you the ability to play the game just like the pros do. They should also give your feet the comfort that they need, and last a long time without any problems. Most importantly, they should look great and feel great. When done correctly, push-ups are incredibly effective for building upper body and core strength.
The push-up is a foundational bodyweight training exercise and is a staple in many training programs. Whether you are a bodybuilder looking to get a bigger set of pecs, an athlete striving for improved strength and performance, a calisthenics junkie who swears by bodyweight exercises, or an everyday gym-goer wanting a well-balanced strength training routine - there’s a good chance you’ve used push-ups in your training regimen.
And there’s a good reason: when done correctly, push-ups are incredibly effective for building upper body and core strength. They pack a big punch in terms of muscles utilized, as they target the pecs, triceps, anterior deltoids, and abdominals. Another added benefit is that they can be done anywhere, requiring zero equipment and minimal space.
Unfortunately, many people aren’t getting all the benefits from this beneficial movement because they either don’t utilize the full range of motion and/or don’t execute their push-ups with proper form.
If you always do your push-ups by going halfway down and then back up, you’ll only get stronger in the top half of the movement. Try going all the way down after training exclusively partial reps, and chances are you won’t be able to get back up (at least not with good form).
Why? Because you only build strength in the range of motion through which you work.
Partial reps = partial strength. Full range of motion = greater strength gains.
So, if you’re ready to leave partial reps behind and level up your push-up practice, use this sequence of progressions to help you.
Hardstyle plank hold: in a forearm plank position, contract every muscle group (from the neck down) in order to generate as much full-body tension as possible. Hold it for 10-15 seconds and repeat 2-3 times. This wakes up your muscular and nervous systems and should elevate your heart rate. The ability to generate full-body tension is key to a strong push-up.
High plank hold: the same concept as #1, but in a high plank (push-up position). "Root" yourself into the floor by actively connecting to it with your fingers and toes.
Incline push-ups: use a box, bench, Smith machine, or squat rack to create an incline; then perform full range of motion push-ups with your hands on the incline. Gradually decrease the incline as you get stronger but be sure you can maintain the plank position and core brace all the way through the movement before progressing.
Eccentric push-ups: begin in a high plank on the floor. Keep your torso in one straight line and think about actively "pulling" yourself toward the floor as slowly as possible.
Knee push-ups: use your own body to create an incline by placing your knees on the floor. Keep your toes connected to the ground as well, and complete self-assisted push-ups like this, focusing on keeping your torso in one straight line all the way through.
Modified concentric (two knees, then one knee): begin in a high plank and lower yourself to the floor while keeping your torso in one straight line. Then drop your knees to the floor for assistance on the way up. Once you can do this successfully with assistance from both knees, progress to using assistance from one knee only (and be sure to alternate sides).
Full push-up: once you've mastered all of the above, you're ready for the full ROM push-up. Utilize the tension principles from step 1 to maintain a strong core brace throughout the entire range of motion.
