Tactical P.E. What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)? And Man Armed With Knife Gets Shot by Cops at Seattle Waterfront

What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

  • Author Janet Ryan-Newell

PTSD

As a psychologist, I have worked with thousands of clients across the mental health spectrum. Each client and each disorder are unique; however, some disorders are more deeply rooted and require more complex interventions than others. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one such ailment. As a result, I have undertaken to write a multi-part series of posts to help counselling-adjacent professionals (e.g. personal injury lawyers, family physicians, social workers, etc.) and interested members of the public to develop a deeper understanding of what PTSD is, how it impacts a person, and what can be done to treat it.

Revolutionary Tactical Strength And Conditioning Program Provides A Simple Training Blueprint To Help Cops, Soldiers, And Prepared Citizens Gain Tactical Muscle

What is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?

It is often useful to begin with data. According to the Canadian Psychologist Association (CPA, 2010), 9.2% of people develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at least once in their lives. In Canada, PTSD is also diagnosed twice as often in females. Many of those diagnosed with PTSD developed it after assaultive violence (43.1%); others develop it after learning about another person’s trauma (34.5%). PTSD is also highly comorbid (i.e. linked) with major depression, substance abuse, and suicide. Given a prevalence of ~10% across Canada’s population, virtually everyone will have met someone who suffers from PTSD. This is precisely why it is important to understand what PTSD is and to come to appreciate its warning signs and indicators.

PTSD is a mental health condition that is triggered when a person experiences or witnesses a psychologically traumatic event.

An event is considered to be traumatic if the person experienced, witnessed, or was confronted with an event or events that involved actual or threatened death or serious injury, or a threat to the physical integrity of self or others. The person’s response must have also involved intense fear, helplessness, or horror (American Psychiatric Association, 1994).

For diagnostic purposes, traumatic events are clearly differentiated from the very painful stressors that constitute the normal distresses of life such as divorce, serious illness, financial stress, and the like. These are instead characterized as adjustment disorders rather than stress disorders. PTSD has been conceptualized as a disorder of fear in which the individual has an exaggerated fear response or lacks the ability to control fear responses (Jovanovic & Ressler, 2010). PTSD has also been described as a disorder of memory, in which individuals seem to "relive their trauma in the form of involuntary recollection" (McNally et al., 1998). In addition to demonstrating enhanced recall for traumatic memories, distressing recollections for those with PTSD are often "vivid" and "long-lasting" (Banich, 2009).

PTSD is the most commonly studied and probably the most frequently debilitating psychological disorder that occurs after traumatic events. It is also unique among psychiatric diagnoses because of the great importance placed upon the etiological agent (i.e. the cause or traumatic stressor). In fact, a practitioner cannot make a PTSD diagnosis unless the patient has actually met the "stressor criterion", which means that he or she must have been exposed to an event that is considered traumatic (National Centre for PTSD, 2016). Historically, PTSD went by the names ‘shell shock’ in WWI and ‘combat fatigue’ in WWII; however, we have learned much about the disorder since that time.

PTSD is no longer linked explicitly to combat; instead, it can be a generalized response to any overwhelming traumatic event. In fact, this cluster of symptoms is now understood to be a trauma response that could be triggered by any number of experiences that were intensely fearful or horrifying in which the person felt helpless, and which involved actual or threatened death or serious injury, or a threat to the physical integrity of self or others. Perhaps not surprisingly, traffic accidents have become recognized as the leading cause of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) since the Vietnam war (Butler and Moffit, 1999; Turkal, 1999) It is estimated that 9 percent of survivors of serious accidents develop significant post-traumatic stress symptoms and that many other survivors have PTSD-like reactions. (Turkal, 1999).

It is the exposure to the traumatic event that facilitates the onset of persistent psychological symptoms. It is natural to feel afraid during and after a traumatic situation. Fear triggers many split-second physiological and emotional changes in the body to help defend against danger or avoid it. This ‘fight-or-flight’ response is a typical reaction meant to protect a person from harm. It is also natural to have some of these distress-related symptoms after a dangerous event. Sometimes people have very serious symptoms that go away after a few days or weeks. This is called acute stress disorder (ASD). Nearly everyone will experience a range of reactions after trauma, yet most people recover from the initial symptoms without requiring intervention.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the case with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. When the symptoms (1) last for longer than a month, (2) seriously affect one’s ability to function, and (3) the reactivity is triggered or exacerbated by the event itself, this could represent the emergence of PTSD. If these levels of reactive stress become entrenched, the disorder is categorically recognized as PTSD. To meet the criteria for diagnosis, symptoms must cause significant distress or impact functioning. When not addressed, symptoms worsen and may become unshakable. Therefore, early identification and intervention is critical.

The American Psychological Association has clearly outlined the major symptoms of PTSD:

PTSD causes short-term memory loss and can have long-term chronic psychological repercussions.

PTSD is often accompanied by depression, intense guilt, or one or more anxiety disorders including severe generalized anxiety, tension, sleep issues, flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, and nightmares.

Emotional symptoms include dissociation and emotional numbness.

Anhedonia, characterized by a loss of interest in formerly enjoyable activities may also be present.

Physical symptoms among PTSD sufferers include higher rates of neurological, respiratory, musculoskeletal, and cardiovascular symptoms.

In summary, PTSD is often very debilitating individually; however, recognizing the symptoms of PTSD in yourself and in others can constitute an essential first step on the path to treatment. In my next post, I will consider the people who suffer from PTSD – how and why does PTSD emerge?

If you or someone you know thinks that they may be suffering from PTSD, please feel free to reach out to us for an assessment: https://kellscounselling.ca/contact/

The Rock Almighty Devotional, Praise, and Worship with Re:zound and GRACE EMPOWERS US TO GIVE

GRACE EMPOWERS US TO GIVE From CDM

One of the benefits of being a Christian is the opportunity to give generously. The world doesn’t understand the significance of giving, but a willingness to give enables us to be a blessing to others.

When we got saved, the Holy Spirit began developing in us the same characteristics as God; one of those characteristics is giving out of love and thanksgiving.

Giving demonstrates our trust in God, and it becomes a reflex action when we begin to understand the depth of His love toward us. According to Paul, the apostle of grace, we receive in proportion to what we’re willing to give. We can choose to give sparingly or generously; however little or much we give will come back to us. It should be done with a joyful heart, not out of a sense of duty.

This is a basic principle of being a believer; however, if we’re not careful, we can get lazy about our giving. It should be done intentionally and with deliberate planning. In this way, we can honor God when we gather together, giving as He has prospered us. To honor means to carry weight; honoring Him with the first fruits of our labor gives Him priority over everything in our lives.

Truly trusting God empowers us to give. This happened with the church at Macedonia, which gave joyfully despite being impoverished. The people were enabled to do this by grace, which allows the believer to do things that are impossible without supernatural assistance. The people had a choice to make, and they chose to have joy.

God cares deeply about how we handle money. This was demonstrated when Jesus remarked on the trust the poor widow displayed when she gave all she had into the treasury. When we give God that kind of trust, He always honors it. What we give will always be given back unto us, pressed down, shaken together, and multiplied many times over.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for giving us the wisdom to show our trust in You through our giving. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The Way to Finding Purpose in Life and Listen to Your Engines

The Way to Finding Purpose in Life

  • Author Jimi Akanbi

Almost every human on the earth does not grasp that he or she has a unique God-given purpose in life given to them while in their mother’s womb, including believers. Hence the convenient action they exercise is to either get a university education, or copy what profession a successful friend is doing in life or both. It follows suit that if you are unaware that I gave you a gift, you are unlikely to unwrap it and start using it. In the same manner, if you do not know that there is a unique destiny deposited in you by God, you will unlikely search for it, let alone fulfill it.

Jesse Duplantis Ministries

The destiny of individuals is not ordained by chance but by divine arrangement. Many people live as such that, what will be, will be, or if it is mine, then it is mine. The latter is a key form of living by chance and not by destiny. Anyone operating outside of his or her God-given destiny may experience some measure of success but will not live a fulfilled life; but when he or she finds destiny, a sense of overflowing joy, peace, favor, victory and much success becomes the person’s portion.

Oftentimes, someone’s purpose in life is not realized through a formal education, but through a divine revelation. There are many humans who replace destiny with a formal education, and end up unhappy and dissatisfied after graduating from college, and working a job which they really hate and dread going to every morning. For example, statistics shows that more than eighty-five percent of employees on the United States of America hate their jobs. Note: It is only confirms that more than eighty-five percent of employees in the USA have not discovered their God-given destiny, because our Lord will not give you a destiny that will allow you to struggle and become miserable.

Some of the few people who understand that they have a high calling or destiny given by God, go about looking for it in the wrong places, and end up quitting and settling for the next best profession. In the discovery of a God-given destiny, the Holy Spirit is the best helper. You need to go to a quiet place, be conscious of His indwelling presence in you, and continually praise and worship God for an hour each day to activate the Holy Spirit, ask Him to reveal your destiny to you, listen for the voice of the Holy Spirit or the voice of your spirit, and act accordingly.

There are times an individual’s destiny may seem menial, but at the end of the day, he or she will be elevated and begin to dine with Kings, princes and rulers of nations. This is a key reason our Lord mentioned in His Word: "Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand". Also, when athletes run a sprint race, no one cares about how fast they take off, but how fast they finish the race.

It is said that the greater an individual’s destiny, the greater his or her challenges. This is a major reason the Generals of God such as; Jesus, Moses, David, Joseph, Job, Daniel, Abraham went through the great storms of life, after which they began to enjoy life to the fullest.

Everyone has at least one gift or talent, which should be used to fulfill his or her purpose in life; put it to use and not waste it. Note: God does not like wastage of any benefits He endows to man. Begin to seek after and find your God-given destiny, and not a duplicate of another human’s destiny.

The Coach

Allen Rudolph, a 26-year coaching veteran, enters his third season as the Ohio football program's offensive line coach in 2021 under 16th-year head coach Frank Solich.

In the 2 seasons in Athens, the Bobcat offense has been in the top 20 in the nation in rushing yards per game and top 10 in the nation in yards per carry. In the 2019 season, the Bobcats were 6th in the country in 3rd down conversion percentage.

Rudolph spent the previous three years as the offensive line coach at Arkansas State, helping to lead the Red Wolves to 23 victories and three bowl appearances – including a 31-13 win over UCF in the Cure Bowl in 2016.

The 2018 season saw the Red Wolves rank 17th in the nation in total offense with 466.2 yards per game and 21st in passing offense with 281.5 yards per game. Under the guidance of Rudolph, tackle Lanard Bonner earned First Team All-Sun Belt Conference honors for the second year in a row while center Jacob Still garnered Honorable Mention All-Sun Belt recognition for the second-straight season.

Rudolph coached an offensive line in 2017 that ranked fifth in the nation in passing offense (342.2 yards per game), 10th in total offense (494.8 yards per game) and 13th in scoring offense (37.8 points per game). A-State's average total offense was also a school record, while its 454 points scored tied the fourth most in school history. Rudolph's offensive line unit helped produce over 400 yards of total offense in 10 of 12 games, including a school and Sun Belt Conference-record 781 yards in a victory over Louisiana-Monroe.

The 2016 offensive line paved the way for 4,932 yards total offense that is the seventh most in school history. Led by two offensive linemen earning All-Sun Belt honors, the Red Wolves recorded over 300 yards total offense in 10 outings, more than 400 in five contests and at least 500 in two outings.  The offensive line helped the squad record a season-high 525 yards in the Sun Belt opener, a 27-26 win over Georgia Southern. Under Rudolph's direction, senior offensive linemen Jemar Clark and Colton Jackson were both named all-conference as first and second team selections, respectively.

Rudolph came to Arkansas State after spending the previous three seasons as the offensive line coach for the Canadian Football League's (CFL) Hamilton Tiger-Cats. His time with Hamilton saw him help lead the team to the playoffs every year, including appearances in the 2013 and '14 Grey Cup.

Rudolph's coaching experience also includes stints at Northwestern State (2012), Southeastern Louisiana (2007-11), Samford (2005-06), East Mississippi Community College (2004), Louisiana-Monroe (2002-03), Mississippi College (2000-01), Copiah-Lincoln Community College (1999) and Nicholls State (1995-98).

Rudolph was a four-year letterman at Nicholls State (1989-93) and served as the team's starting center for three seasons. He was one of the Colonels' team captains in his junior and senior campaigns. A Jackson County, Miss., native, Rudolph earned his bachelor's degree in American studies from Southern Mississippi in 1995.

Rudolph and his wife, Nicole, have two daughters, Abbey and McKenzie.

Lose Weight Quickly By Adding These Simple Exercises To Your Life

  • Author Irabor Mark
Weight loss can be stressful. Even thinking about which strategy to use to lose weight can be difficult!

There are literally thousands of guides, diets, and tips out there that are endorsed by all kinds of celebrities. This makes it hard to know which ones will work for you, or even work at all! This article seeks to make weight loss easier by providing tips that have been proven to help. (Continued below.....)

Building muscle doesn't have to happen in a gym or under an iron bar loaded with plates. It can happen with almost no equipment, in your garage, back room, or right next to your bed.
► Full-Body Muscle-Building Homeworkouts Program:
► Shop Bodybuilding Signature Supplements:

(....Continued.....)For people who have never enjoyed running, but really want to, there is a very interesting program. The program is called Couch to 5k and it helps someone who are completely inactive prepare their body and mind to run for 30 minutes in just 8 weeks. So far it has had very good reviews.

Avoid eating when you are bored when trying to lose weight. When you eat to relieve boredom, you are more likely to eat high fat or sugary snack foods like chips or candy instead of healthy foods. You are also more likely to eat more food than if you plan your snacks.

Buy smaller plates. Many dish sets contain plates designed to hold significantly more than one serving of food. These plates can make normal portions look small. You may, inadvertently, end up eating more than is necessary. Replace your large plates with small ones. Getting smaller plates will make your portions look larger.

If you are not a great cook or simply do not have time to cook a healthy, balanced meal for yourself you should join one of the meal plans that are available. Many of the plans are actually budget friendly and come with a wide variety of food choices. That way you will be less likely to get bored and quit the diet before giving it a chance to work.

One helpful way to lose weight is to sneak low-calorie, nutrient dense foods into your "normal" diet. How do you do this? For example, when making your oatmeal in the morning, dice up a whole large apple and add it to the mix along with some cinnamon. You will have boosted the fiber and flavor of your breakfast; it will make you much more full and satisfy your hunger that much longer, and it will taste like apple pie!

Use house cleaning as a quick method to burn calories. Activities such as sweeping and mopping work many of your body's muscles. This burns off calories quickly when you do the same repetitions daily. Cleaning windows also works the upper arms very well. Any choirs can become the perfect workout routine, so you accomplish two tasks in one.

Wear comfortable clothes. Studies have shown that people actually lose more weight when they are wearing clothing they can lounge around in. Work clothes can be stuffy, and most people are very uncomfortable wearing them. As a result, you tend to move around less. Comfortable clothes encourage more movement. You are burning more calories whether you realize it or not.

Try to include some type of protein in all of your meals and snacks. This is a good idea because it will keep you full for much longer and give you much needed energy. It also makes it less likely that you will start to eat things that you should not.

Weight loss is definitely a challenging process. A lot of people give up without ever getting anywhere. That doesn't have to be you! If you are truly looking to lose weight, then stay confident and never give up. This article has proven that effective and feasible approaches to weight loss do exist. It can be done.
