San Jose Police officers lawfully shot and killed a driver, who, after a nine-mile high-speed chase, tried to smash a stolen car out of a phalanx of police cars, endangering the officers and the community, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office has determined.
Officers believed the stolen car driven by Jennifer Vazquez, 24, had just been involved with a drive-by shooting.
Prosecutor David Boyd’s 62-page public report concludes: “Nothing Jennifer Vazquez did on December 25, 2018, dispelled the reasonable suspicion that she was exactly who the police were looking for, an armed fleeing felon who had just shot two people and may have shot a third two hours earlier. Even after the crash, Vazquez’s behavior revealed to a reasonable observer that she was not going to be arrested – no matter what law enforcement would do – and that she was going to use the car in order to escape with no regard for the safety of others.”
In the early morning of December 25, 2018, police were investigating a shooting of two people at Story Road and Clemence Avenue. While the call was unfolding, a bystander told an officer that the vehicle involved in the shooting was leaving the area, yelling, “That way! They shot!” pointing southbound on Clemence Avenue. Looking in the direction indicated by the witness, the officer saw a Toyota Camry turning from Clemence Avenue onto Owsley Avenue. Police followed the Camry and determined it was reported stolen. When they attempted to stop the car, the driver refused to yield and led police on a high-speed, nine-mile chase – at one point driving against traffic without the headlights on. During the chase, police were told that there was another shotgun shooting relatively close to the drive-by two hours before. The Camry finally crashed at Leigh and Fruitdale avenues and was quickly surrounded by police cars. Boxed in and ordered to get out of the car by armed officers, the driver refused to surrender. She attempted to smash her way out with the car.
When it looked as though the dangerous felon was about to escape and potentially strike an officer, four officers fired their service weapons multiple times, fatally wounding Vazquez. The incident was captured on body-worn cameras. It was only determined later that day the Camry was not involved in the drive-by shooting.
Police found burglary tools and methamphetamine in Vazquez’s clothing. An autopsy showed that she had methamphetamine and amphetamine in her blood. Vazquez, who had an active warrant for methamphetamine possession, was convicted of fleeing from police in a stolen car in 2014.
Passenger Linda Carmona-Bruno was also injured by police gunfire and suffered non-life threatening injuries. The DA’s Office also found this use of force lawful.

“But unto you who revere and worshipfully fear My name shall the Sun of Righteousness arise with healing in His wings and His beams, and you shall go forth and gambol like calves [released] from the stall and leap for joy” (Malachi 4:2, AMPC).
Healing on all levels ultimately comes from God. Being in His presence not only heals us physically, but also brings us great joy.
As believers, we need the Holy Spirit operating in our lives. However, most churches reject Him because they do not understand Him. In light of this, we must ask ourselves if somehow we, too, have banned or excluded Him. The Holy Spirit is not simply a feeling; He is a real person and part of the Holy Trinity. We all were born with a God-given plan for our lives; the Spirit was sent to help us succeed in that mission. The reason Jesus was so successful in His ministry was because He completely depended on the Holy Spirit’s help. We have access to this same Spirit if we simply give Him permission to get involved with everything that concerns us.
The Holy Spirit wants to lead us through life and bring to pass God’s promises to us.
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you (John 14:26).
The Holy Spirit will help us in any area in which we are weak. However, He needs our permission to intercede.
But the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to recall (will remind you of, bring to your remembrance) everything I have told you (John 14:26, AMPC).
The Holy Spirit is a real person who fulfills many roles.
The Spirit has been present since the very beginning. When God created the earth, the Holy Spirit was there to administer creation.
And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters (Genesis 1:2).
This same Spirit lives in us, and has accepted the responsibility to administer every promise God made to us. This includes healing, deliverance, and everything else Jesus’ blood made available.
For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure (Philippians 2:13).
When we study God’s Word and it begins to change us, we must remember that it is the Holy Spirit who is doing the changing. He is working in us.
The Spirit is enabled to work in us when we get to know God through His Word.
For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him (Philippians 2:13, NLT).
The Holy Spirit will change our old “want to” into a new “want to” that aligns with God’s will.
“Power” is the ability to get the job done.
When the Holy Spirit is our unseen partner, we cannot be stopped, defeated, or deceived.
The Spirit teaches us what we need to know to succeed in life. He tells us the truth.
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come (John 16:13).
We will see several attributes when the Holy Spirit begins working in us. One of those attributes is that of a teacher; He will impart knowledge and information.
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth. Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also. Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life. These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him (1 John 2:19-27).
Some people misinterpret verse twenty-seven to say that we do not need anyone to teach us. This assumption is an example of lifting Scripture out of context.
This passage was written because some had left the group of believers and were teaching false, deceptive doctrine.
We do need teachers; teaching is part of God’s five-fold ministry. We simply must be aware of anyone who is deceived trying to teach us their version of the truth.
The Holy Spirit also corrects and guides us. We can trust Him to keep us out of danger.
For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness (Hebrews 12:10).
A second attribute we will see when the Holy Spirit begins working in us is that of a corrector; He corrects us when we need improvement, refinement, or rebuking. This is designed to keep us in God’s love, and out of self-centeredness.
To be holy is to stand out. This means that when the world is sick, we are healed; when the world is broke, we have sufficiency.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever (Psalm 23:1-6).
A third attribute is that of a director. The Holy Spirit’s job is to guide us into the will of God; the Spirit knows the right directions.
A shepherd leads and guides the sheep. God leads us into peace and restores our broken souls.
When we walk through life in sickness, hatred, and everything that spiritual darkness produces, we are walking in the shadow of death. However, the shadow of death is simply a shadow; we do not have to let fear govern us.
To dwell in the house of the Lord is to dwell in His presence. Anger, shame, guilt, and hurt cannot enter in.
Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore (Psalm 16:11).
Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord (2 Corinthians 3:17, 18).
The Holy Spirit gives us liberty from the law. The law can never lead and guide us like He can. The law tells us what is wrong with us; the Holy Ghost tells us how to fix it.
The Spirit changes us when we cannot change ourselves. All we need to do is to keep focusing on the Word.
