Intro to Javelin - Coach Halley's Introduction to Throwing the Javelin

The javelin throw is a unique event in track and field. My mission is to provide athletes of all ages and abilities the opportunity to learn the javelin throw with an emphasis on technique. In this course, you will learn how to throw the javelin from my perspective.  I don't consider this a basic or moderate course but rather a new perspective on learning the javelin. Each concept builds on each other. I include technical instruction, common mistakes and drills to help teach you how to throw the javelin safely and efficiently. Book This Course...........
CoachHalleyScott HalleyPower through efficient technique!

Scott Halley specializes in javelin technique. He works with athletes of all ages and abilities locally and around the world. Coaching highlights from the past 4 years include:
  • 50+ state qualifiers
  • 9 state champions
  • 1 USA Junior National Champion
  • 3 Junior Olympic Regional Champions
  • 2 Junior Olympic Champions
  • 1 ParaPan American Bronze Medalist
  • 2 US Olympic Trial Qualifiers
  • 8 NAIA All-Americans
Scott Halley is a United States javelin thrower based in Gresham, Oregon. Scott’s experience in the javelin started while finishing his junior year in high school. A 196’ 8” throw and a second place finish at the state meet left him dreaming of college success and a goal of making the Olympics. His senior year proved to be even better with a first place finish and a throw of 209’ 2”. The collegiate years to follow proved to be a rocky road and life’s distractions got the better of him. His dreams of finishing his degree, winning a national title, and making an Olympic team quickly faded away in the spring of 2002. After failing to make the finals at the NAIA National Championship, while entering the competition ranked number one, Scott decided to stop throwing the javelin and do some soul searching back home.

Several years passed and Scott found himself coaching the javelin at his old high school, working full time and taking care of his newly born son, Ethan. Later that season, he was approached by his former collegiate coach, Randy Dalzell. Randy expressed his interest in Scott’s life and asked if he would like to join a new track and field program he was starting at Concordia University. Randy convinced him that it was possible to head back to school and finish his degree and get one more chance at winning an NAIA national title. That spring Scott enrolled in some classes and began improving his academic standing to be eligible to attend Concordia in the following spring. That year, Scott was back throwing again and training under the tutelage of Mac Wilkins and Duncan Atwood. After a 4 year hiatus and at 155 pounds, Scott made his comeback.

A season that started just over 200 feet with a partially torn ligament in his throwing arm, Scott was able to finish the season with a record breaking throw if 235’ 9” and his NAIA national title. Physical therapy and completion of his degree quickly followed. After no improvement with his shoulder, Scott opted for surgery to repair a partially torn labrum. With 2007 filled with physical therapy and career changes, Scott’s javelin development was interrupted.

With life taking over, athletic goals have been replaced by coaching goals. Scott has now goals of developing athletes of all ages and abilities into great javelin throwers. Book this course......................

Strength Coach Latest Featured Forum Discussion: Value in finding Maximum Aerobic Speed in High School Female Soccer Players

Value in finding Maximum Aerobic Speed in High School Female Soccer Players
I took over a Girls High School Soccer program last year and immediately implemented weight training and physical assessments in hoping to help them to begin learning about their bodies, reduce injuries and help me begin to individualize their training as much as possible. I am realistic about our program and youth. I have few student-athletes who want to play at the next level but most seem interested in being healthy and strong. What I am trying to answer is there value in trying to identify their Max Aerobic Speed and Max speed to develop conditioning strategies for them. If so, what do you recommend. I have also begun using Heart Rate Monitors during our field sessions. Some are very excited to get this feedback. I am still learning how to use this information to educate them and individualize their training. Here are our current Physical Assessments. Would you recommend alternative assessments?

sit-n-reach
Push-ups (60 secs)
Sit-ups (60 secs)
Standing Broad Jump
T-Test
30M sprint
300 yard shuttle
1.5 Mile run

Thank you.

RE: Value in finding Maximum Aerobic Speed in High School Female Soccer Players
Kyle- congrats. Great questions. Lets try to take them one at a time.

Your current testing protocol is a bit dated? For MAS you could simply test 3/4 mi. MAS is the speed in the 5-6 min range and, my guess is most of your girls would fall in this range. This would also eliminate the 1.5 mi run

Sit and reach is an outdated test. The FMS Active Straight Leg Raise looks at a similar quality but, prevents movement across multiple joints.

For push-ups I would simply do max reps with proper form. My guess is that most will be under ten and done in about 15 seconds.

I would eliminate sit-ups altogether. Probably more harm than good. ( Take a look at Anthony's No More Sit-ups and Crunches article.)

Standing Broad Jump- not a bad test but you have to carefully monitor landing position. Low squat landings can cause the knee injuries we are trying to prevent.

T-Test- no problem with this one.

Instead of a 30M sprint use a 10 yd sprint. Much safer and you'll get better comparative data.

300 yard shuttle- my favorite conditioning test.

1.5 Mile run- as I mentioned above, cut it in half and get MAS.

PS- Don't get caught up in the "this is what the US team does" etc. The key to testing is your team, not what some else does. Again, congrats.

Cellular Nutrition in Cancer Treatment

By: Lucy Jones.
Cancer treatments come in many different forms, from the traditional chemotherapy and radiation therapy to newer practices such as hyperthermia and intravenous vitamin supplements. This article will be looking at the use of cellular nutrition in cancer treatments, including alternative therapies.

Optimal cell health is very important for our health and can be achieved through nutrition. Our cells work hard to turn oxygen and nutrients into energy and water using the cellular power plants called mitochondria that each of them contains. The problem is that oxygen is toxic to our cells and produces free radicals which oxidize biological molecules, just like iron oxidizes when it rusts. This damages the cells and inactivates cellular respiration, causing the cell to die. The body’s fats, proteins and DNA are impaired, contributing to aging and diseases like cancer.

Oxidative stress can be reduced by strengthening the body's antioxidant defenses and bringing down the number of free radicals in the body. Optimal cellular nutrition is the best way of doing this. All nutrients need to be supplied to the cell at optimal levels so it can choose which nutrients it needs.

Within a few months of achieving optimal cell nutrition our nutrient levels are corrected. So how do we reach this goal? Research shows that following the RDA, or recommended daily allowance, of certain vitamins is not enough. Some studies demonstrate that the optimal level of vitamin C is in fact 1200 to 2000 mg per day, much more than the RDA which is just 60 mg.

To achieve optimal cellular nutrition we would need to eat 18 oranges, 17 kiwis or 160 apples. Clearly we need to take some supplements if we want to reach these vitamin levels.

When it comes to cancer treatment cellular nutrition can work alone in fighting the disease in its early stages, but it is usually used to strengthen the body prior to more traditional therapies. As well as changing our diet we need to move beyond an over the counter approach to supplementation.

Angeles hospital in Mexico provides cancer patients with organic meals as well as pharmaceutical grade supplements. Supplementation programs are created by a team of medical experts that take important factors such as physical state, genetic background, daily activities, gender, age and the presence or absence of different diseases.

People with chronic diseases like cancer find it harder to meet their daily nutritional needs by just changing their diet as their bodies require extra help. Professionally designed supplementation prescription is often necessary.

On the alternative cancer treatment program at Angeles hospital the Functional Oncology team use your medical history, various tests and lab work to create a supplement regimen to optimize your cellular nutrition and meet your health challenges and needs. The supplementation plan is continually revised and adjusted as your body begins to heal and become more balanced and healthy.

Angeles hospital provides cancer treatment of the highest standards and is known for being an upscale luxury facility with state of the art equipment and the most innovative, effective techniques. To learn more please view our alternative cancer treatment website.

Dramatic bodycam video shows an Edgewater police officer and a Volusia County Sheriff’s deputy fighting to free a man trapped in a burning vehicle that had just been struck head-on by a wrong-way driver in one of two fatal early-morning crashes Wednesday. “These officers acting courageously and selflessly during this rescue,” said Edgewater Interim Chief of Police Joe Mahoney. Two men were killed Wednesday in a pair of early morning interstate crashes, one of which resulted in a secondary wreck that upended a dump truck, spilling asphalt onto the roadway and closing southbound Interstate 95 for the better part of the day, reported the Florida Highway Patrol. The southbound lanes of I-95 reopened about 1:40 p.m. but had been shut down for several hours between State Road 442 in Edgewater and Deering Parkway in Scottsmoor, causing major delays as vehicles were detoured to U.S. 1. Around 12:45 a.m., authorities responded to reports of a car traveling the wrong direction on I-95 southbound. That car, a 2010 Honda Insight, driven by 23-year-old Devon Standish of Daytona Beach, was traveling north in a southbound lane and crashed head-on into a 2018 Cadillac driven by Logan Aschendorf, 22, of Boca Raton. The Cadillac caught on fire, and body cam video provided by Edgewater police shows officers and Volusia County deputies working feverishly to bust in windows and pry open doors to pull Aschedorf to safety. An Edgewater officer who entered the vehicle was treated for smoke inhalation and later released, Mahoney said.

Live Like Jesus

Philippians 2:7

The truth of this verse hasn't really dawned on most people. They mistakenly think that Jesus was able to work wonders, to perform miracles and to live above sin because He had divine powers that we don't have. Thus, they have never really aspired to live like He lived.
"Oh my," they say with great humility, "I could never live like Jesus did. After all, He had an advantage. He was God!"
They don't realize that when Jesus came to earth, He voluntarily gave up that advantage, living His life here not as God but as a man. He had no innate supernatural powers. He had no ability to perform miracles until after He was anointed by the Holy Spirit as recorded in Luke 3:22. He worked wonders, not by His own power but by the power of the Father, saying, "The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works" (John 14:10).
And when He prayed, He prayed not as a divine One who had authority as God, but as a man who walked obediently with God. And, as Hebrews 5:7 says, "His prayers were heard not because of His deity, but because of His reverence toward God" (The Amplified Bible).
Jesus, the divine Son of God, set aside the privileges and powers of deity for a time and lived as a man on earth. Once you grasp that, it will absolutely thrill your soul! Why? Because it means that you, as a reborn child of God, filled with the same Holy Spirit as Jesus was, have the same opportunity to live as He lived on earth. In fact, that is exactly what He intends. In John 17:18 He said to the Father, "Just as You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world" (The Amplified Bible).
Jesus has sent you into the world to live as He lived. Through the new birth, He's enabled you to exchange the sinful nature of Adam for the sinless nature of God.
He's given you the ability and the command to live above sin, to live in fellowship with the Father, to preach the gospel, to heal the sick, to raise the dead, to cast out demons and to make disciples.
Once you realize that, you'll throw off the shackles of doubt that have held you back. You'll begin to live as Jesus meant for you to live—not as a sin-ridden son of fallen man, but as a reborn child of the Most High God. Then those around you will actually begin to see Jesus—in you.
