We are seeing the future and in some cases it's not pretty. On one hand we are seeing the highest salaries ever paid in the field of strength and conditioning. On the other hand we are seeing the same trend we see in many industries, older employees being replaced by younger employees.

Unfortunately many strength and conditioning coaches have not planned for the inevitable and the inevitable is that you may not go out on your own terms.

Many of us started in this profession 30 plus years ago and never thought about the end game.  Retirement? We'd coach forever, die with our boots on like in the old western's.

Sadly, that's not happening. Suddenly strength coaches are finding themselves in their fifties with no pensions, not enough money saved and sometimes no job.

My advice? Start planning now. As with many professions, you will age out even if you never planned to.

I was talking about this to another veteran strength and conditioning coach, Bob Alejo, and he had a great observation;

“ have you ever been to a retirement party for a strength coach?'

Now think about the flip side. Have you seen a strength coach in his fifties suddenly get let go, reassigned etc?

My first big job was at UCLA in August of 1984. And, as I was receiving what I thought was a million dollars ($11,500 full-time), I didn't put a nickel in my 410k…not a cent! Love never fails.

1 Corinthians 13:8, The Amplified Bible

Fear of failure. It's haunted all of us at some time in our lives. Popular psychology tells us to adjust to it. But the Word of God tells us that there is a failure-proof way to live without it. It is the way of love.

If you want to know real success, you must learn to be moved and motivated by love. That's how Jesus was when He was on the earth.

Even when John the Baptist was senselessly, brutally murdered and Jesus went away to be alone, He didn't deviate from the way of love. For Matthew 14:6-14 says that even then in that emotionally taxing time when the people followed Him and would give Him no solitude, He was moved with compassion and healed their sick.

I used to wonder how Jesus could just turn away from that terrible crime and not retaliate. What I didn't realize was that He did retaliate. He overcame the works of Satan with compassion. He defeated hatred with love. He attacked Satan in the spirit realm by destroying his works of sickness and disease.

Compassion doesn't strike at the surface of things. It goes to the root of the problem. That's why it always succeeds.

"But wait!" you may say. "I can't operate like that. I'm not Jesus."

Yes you can, because the Word of God says that His love has been shed abroad in your heart! (Rom. 5:5). And 1 John 2:5 says His love is perfected in you as you keep His Word.

Commit to living the life of love today. Watch God turn failure into success at home, at work...in any situation. Love never fails!

Military Drug Testing

Drug testing in the armed forces in all types of the wings (Army, Navy and Airforce) is a must for each and every personal as the military has a zero-tolerance policy for illegal drug use. The military services conduct several types of no-notice urinalysis drug testing. Positive results on most of these tests can be used for court-martial and discharge procedures. Department of Defense, which is more popular as DoD is attacking the problem on the two fronts of supply and demand. Education and deterrence are the key aspects of reducing demand for illegal drugs in the defense forces. Military Drug Tests: To combat the rising health concern of drug abuse in the defense forces, DoD uses more sensitive tests to detect ecstasy during routine urine testing. Active duty service members must undergo a urine drug test annually. Reserve component members must be tested at least every two years. DoD labs test more than 60,000 urine samples each month, but it would be next to impossible for a mistaken positive result to affect a service member's career. The Drug Testing Procedure: There are several protections built-in to the system to ensure accurate results. There is always a written record of who those individuals who access the sample. People who come in contact with each sample and what exactly they do to the sample are written on the document. After arrival at the lab, samples undergo an initial immunoassay screening (using the Olympus AU-800 Automated Chemistry Analyzer). Those that test positive for the presence of drugs at this point undergo the same screen once again. Finally, those that come up positive during the second screening test are put through a much more specific gas chromatography/mass spectrometry test. This test can identify specific substances within the urine samples. Even if a particular drug is detected, if the level is below a certain threshold, the test result is reported back to the commander as negative. DoD labs are equipped to test for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, LSD, opiates (including morphine and heroin), barbiturates and PCP. But not all samples are tested for all of these drugs. Every sample gets tested for marijuana, cocaine and amphetamines, including ecstasy. Tests for other drugs are done at random on different schedules for each lab. Some laboratories do test every sample for every drug. Commanders can request samples be tested for steroids. In this case, the samples are sent to the Olympic testing laboratory at the University of California at Los Angeles.

Who Are You Connected To?

It's interesting that when a great flood covered the earth, Noah's family was the only one that was saved. The Scripture says, "Noah found favor with the Lord" (Genesis 6:8). It doesn't say Noah's sons had favor, but because they were connected to Noah, their lives were spared. The principle is, when you are connected with people who are favored, people who are further along, people who are more successful, then that favor will flow down to you. You'll see increase and blessing because of your association.

You should be in relationship with people who inspire you, challenge you, and make you strive to do better. When you're connected to someone who's blessed, someone you respect and admire, someone you can learn from and serve, the more blessed they are, the more blessed you're going to be. Eventually, you're going to look like who you're connected to. The question is, are you connected to people who have what you want? Or, are you connected to people who are critical, negative, can't get ahead, drain your energy and cause you to compromise? It's fine to be a good influence to them and encourage them, but if you're spending all your time with them, you're going to become just like them. What they have will rub off on you.

You need to disconnect from people who are hindering your growth, limiting your potential and causing you to compromise, and you need to find some favor connections. You need to connect with people who are going places, who are at another level, who have what you dream about. You need some eagles in your life. You can't hang around with chickens and reach your destiny. You can't spend all your free time with crows, with people who complain, or with turkeys, with people who have accepted mediocrity. You need people who are soaring, who are taking new ground, who think bigger than you, who dream bigger, and who will expose you to levels you've never seen.

God has already lined up these favor connections for you—people who are ordained to help you go further. God will use them to let you get a glimpse into the next level, to show you where He's taking you. You have to expand your vision and thinking for the new things God has in store. If you'll sow into them, serve them, honor them, glean from them, then as they go higher, because you're connected, you'll go higher. Now do your part and get in agreement with God. Don't think it's impossible. God has ways to do it that you've never thought of.
