Training the Endurance Athlete (Strength Coach Classic)

Michael Boyle
Training endurance athletes can be a goldmine for personal trainers and strength coaches if you can understand their mentality. Truth is endurance athletes have a lot of qualities that make them desirable clients. They are generally motivated, in need of help and often affluent. In fact, triathletes, runners and rowers far outnumber team sport athletes in the adult population.

The first question you need to ask yourself in order to understand the endurance athlete is "Why are they an endurance athlete?". The answer generally comes in one of four parts.

1. Genetic predisposition- they've always been good at endurance activity
2. Mental predisposition- they've always been a type A personality.
3. Endurance training provides a competitive outlet into adulthood.
4. A combination of 1, 2, and 3
You might ask yourself "Does it matter why they are an endurance athlete?". It does matter because personality characteristics and genetic predisposition are at first a positive but, can rapidly become a negative. High levels of motivation and drive can initially produce great results. However often they also produce injuries. I believe that what makes you train hard also makes you train hurt.
The truth is that endurance training probably isn't good for you. However, no endurance athlete wants to hear that. This is what they do and they are not about to change because you or I think the risk of injury is too high. So if you can't change them you might as well help them. If you can't beat em, train em.
In order to train the endurance athete you need to understand how he or she thinks. This involves something I have decided to call The Endurance Cycle. The cycle is illustrated below.

The Endurance Cycle
-Train--- Injury--- Rehab/PT----

-Train--- Injury--- Rehab/PT----
-Train--- Injury--- Rehab/PT----
-Train--- Injury--- Rehab/PT----
The cycle is simple. Train hard until you get hurt. Call your PT (who by now is like a family friend) rest and repeat. This is so prevalent that I have coined another term "The Endurance Conversation". This is a typical conversation overheard between two endurance athletes.
Endurance athlete 1 Question- "Are you training or injured?"
Endurance athlete 2 Answer - " Well I just got over _ _ _ itis and I've being running in the pool.."
To you or I, this may seem like a strange conversation but, between two endurance athletes. This is a "how's the weather conversation?". Endurance athletes view injury as a reasonable expectation and are not surprised when it happens. In fact, my theory is that the entire physical therapy profession owes a great debt to the early aerobic proponents of the seventies. As a kid growing up playing sports I had never heard of a physical therapist. Physical therapists were put on the map by endurance athletes and their "itises". Endurance athletes fueled the physical therapy boom and today they continue to provide some of physical therapies best patients. To be honest, PT's love these guys. They are like crack addicts to them.
Another thing that has become very common in the endurance world is the revolving door of what I like to call "The Injury Progression". The injury progression is illustrated below.  Join StrengthCoach.com today to read the full article and more....

General Law Enforcement Training, Educational Requirements and Job Description
By: Ryan Sprout
The general requirements in order to become a law enforcement officer are to *Obtain a POST ID (Peace officer Standards and Training ID) *Attend a training academy for law enforcement *Take necessary certification tests and become certified as a peace or law enforcement officer The amount of education you need to become a law enforcement officer varies as the career themselves. Some college experience is enough in becoming a police officer, while a undergraduate bachelors degree is necessary to pursue a career as an FBI, DEA, ATF or Border patrol agent. Many agencies and departments urge their employees to pursue a degree in criminal justice or obtain a post high school education. Courses in criminal justice include but are not limited to criminal justice, humanities, ethics, police organization, administration, leadership development, analytic reasoning, and communications. It's very important to keep in mind that it's important to complete and get your high school diploma. If not, continue forward in your education by getting your GED. You can do so by your local adult education center. None the less, it's always better to acquire some years or a four year college education. The most attractive elements about working as an officer and in the criminal justice field are the routine and scheduling. The possibilities are almost endless with a career in criminal justice and enforcement of laws. A typical day for someone who works in different fields of law enforcement varies depending on the career path you pursue. Generally an enforcement officer may work in the office cubicle of the agency or more exciting in the field. An officer may encounter things differently everyday from keeping a watchful eye on citizens during a political convention, tapping into a phone call of a fugitive or pretending to be a young girl online to lure a pedophile into a sting operation arrest, assisting with a riot or preventing a terrorist crime from happening. The qualities officers must have are common sense, respect and sense for and of their community, intelligence, mindful of their environment, the courage to make smart decisions when necessary and when to hold back and stay calm, be educated, stay grounded and be realistic about the career field they are in. For those inspired to pursue a career in criminal justice enforcement; the financial and job security are well in place. More importantly, the kickback and personal reward of helping people, saving lives, and keeping the community safe when stressful or dangerous situations arise. For those inspired to pursue a career in the United States law enforcement task force, the financial and job security are well in place. More importantly, the kickback and personal reward of helping people, saving lives and keeping the community safe.

Press In

Colossians 3:16

Things in this old world aren't getting any better, and in recent times, the Holy Spirit has been speaking an urgent message to my heart. He's been saying, Press in. Draw in to a more intimate relationship with your heavenly Father. If you don't, you won't make it. If you do, you will see more glorious outpourings of God than you can imagine.
That message isn't just for me. It's also for you—and for every other believer on the earth today. We are in the last of the last days of this age. Jesus is coming soon. It's an exciting time, but it's also a dangerous time. Those who don't do what the Spirit says, who don't press in to the Lord, are going to go from disaster to disaster. But those who do will defeat the disasters and turn them into glory, in Jesus' Name!
Your first step in drawing closer to God is to realize that you know God first in His Word. Time spent meditating in the New Testament is time spent with Jesus.
Most people don't realize that. So, instead of getting to know the Lord through His Word, they try to know Him through their feelings and that just won't work.
Letting the Word dominate your thinking is to allow the Holy Spirit to have control over your mind. As you do that, your feelings will eventually fall in line.
Remember this: John 1 tells us that Jesus is the Word. That means, when you spend time in it, you're spending time with Jesus. When His Word is dwelling in you richly, then Jesus is dwelling in you richly too!
Don't go from disaster to disaster. Take those disasters and turn them into glory, in Jesus' Name. Press in to Jesus. Press in to the Word and you'll make it through these dangerous days just fine!

THE GOOD LIFE

BY CREFLO DOLLAR 5 DEC 2018

WHEN IT COMES TO THE KIND OF LIFE WE WANT, MOST OF US WOULD AGREE THAT WE WANT “THE GOOD LIFE,” HOWEVER THAT IS DEFINED. THE CONFUSION COMES WHEN WE TRY TO DECIDE JUST WHAT THIS GOOD LIFE MEANS FOR EACH OF US. THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA FEEDS US THE WORLD’S DEFINITION OF THIS KIND OF LIFESTYLE, WHICH MAY INCLUDE THINGS LIKE LOTS OF MONEY, BIG HOUSES, OR EXPENSIVE CARS. HOWEVER, THERE’S MORE TO LIFE THAN MEETS THE EYE; MOST PEOPLE MISS THE SPIRITUAL UNDERPINNINGS THAT ARE EVEN MORE IMPORTANT THAN PHYSICAL APPEARANCES.
THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH HAVING THE FINER THINGS IN LIFE, AS LONG AS WE REALIZE THAT ACQUIRING THEM SHOULDN’T BE OUR OVERARCHING GOAL. IF THAT’S ALL WE’RE AIMING FOR, AS SOON AS WE GET THEM, WE’LL FIND THAT IT’S JUST NOT ENOUGH. JESUS WARNED AGAINST PUTTING TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON COLLECTING WORLDLY GOODS. “AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, TAKE HEED, AND BEWARE OF COVETOUSNESS: FOR A MAN'S LIFE CONSISTETH NOT IN THE ABUNDANCE OF THE THINGS WHICH HE POSSESSETH” (LUKE 12:15).
THE POPULAR SLOGAN “THE MORE, THE MERRIER” LETS US DOWN BECAUSE IT DOESN’T TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THAT WEALTH AND MATERIAL POSSESSIONS ARE SIMPLY EMPTY THINGS IF WE PURSUE THEM FOR THEIR OWN MERITS. ON ITS OWN, AN OVERABUNDANCE OF POSSESSIONS DOESN’T MAKE LIFE ONE BIT MORE ENJOYABLE. “THOSE WHO LOVE MONEY WILL NEVER HAVE ENOUGH. HOW MEANINGLESS TO THINK THAT WEALTH BRINGS TRUE HAPPINESS! THE MORE YOU HAVE, THE MORE PEOPLE COME TO HELP YOU SPEND IT. SO WHAT GOOD IS WEALTH—EXCEPT PERHAPS TO WATCH IT SLIP THROUGH YOUR FINGERS!” (ECCLESIASTES 5:10, 11, NLT). THE QUALITY OF A PERSON’S LIFE ISN’T MEASURED BY HOW MUCH MONEY THEY HAVE.
GOD LOVES US AND WANTS THE BEST IN LIFE FOR US, AND HE DOESN’T WANT US TO GET CONFUSED ON THIS POINT. SOME PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO SACRIFICE EVERYTHING DEAR TO THEM AND COMPROMISE WHAT THEY BELIEVE IN, TO GET A STEP OR TWO CLOSER TO EXPERIENCING THE LIFE THEY THINK THEY WANT. THE DEVIL IS THE KING OF GLITTER, GLITZ, AND ILLUSION. HIS PLAN IS TO FOOL US INTO CHASING AFTER SOMETHING BECAUSE OF PRESTIGE OR SURFACE APPEARANCES. “THE THIEF’S PURPOSE IS TO STEAL AND KILL AND DESTROY. MY PURPOSE IS TO GIVE THEM A RICH AND SATISFYING LIFE” (JOHN 10:10, NLT).
MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW GOD OR HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM. AS A RESULT, THEY LOOK FOR THINGS FROM THE WORLD THAT ONLY HE CAN GIVE. “FOR ALL THAT IS IN THE WORLD—THE LUST OF THE FLESH [CRAVING FOR SENSUAL GRATIFICATION] AND THE LUST OF THE EYES [GREEDY LONGINGS OF THE MIND] AND THE PRIDE OF LIFE [ASSURANCE IN ONE’S OWN RESOURCES OR IN THE STABILITY OF EARTHLY THINGS]—THESE DO NOT COME FROM THE FATHER BUT ARE FROM THE WORLD [ITSELF]” (1 JOHN 2:16, AMPC). THIS IS A TRAP THE DEVIL HAS DEVISED TO FOOL US INTO THINKING THAT THE SOURCE OF OUR PROSPERITY CAN BE FOUND IN THE WORLD.
THE TRUTH IS THAT WHEN WE TRUST GOD TO LEAD US, OUR FAITH PUTS US IN A POSITION TO ALLOW HIM TO BLESS US PROFUSELY. WE’LL NEVER HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT WHAT KIND OF A LIFE WE’LL END UP WITH WHEN WE RELY ON HIM. “BUT MY GOD SHALL SUPPLY ALL YOUR NEED ACCORDING TO HIS RICHES IN GLORY BY CHRIST JESUS” (PHILIPPIANS 4:19). HE SUPPLIES NOT JUST MATERIAL WEALTH, BUT ALSO WHAT REALLY MATTERS—THE ACCOMPANYING PEACE AND JOY THAT WE ALL WANT.
