WHAT’S NEXT? – ISMAEL MARTINEZ

We sat down with Team BPI athlete, Ismael Martinez to hear about his life after the Olympia.
“I’m Ismael Martinez, Mr. Mexico and fitness model.”
BPI: You had some difficulties getting to the Olympia this year. Do you want to talk about it?
Translation: ¿Tuviste algunas dificultades para llegar al Olympia este año. ¿Quieres hablar acerca de ello?
Ismael: A weekend before the Olympia, someone broke into my house and took a lot – my wife’s papers, my passport and Visas… That was the most complicated because I had a week to get those papers and it was almost impossible. I didn’t think I would get to the Olympia, but fortunately, I was able to get them in a few days. I had to do it!
Translation: Si un fin de semana antes de ir al Olympia entraron a robar a mi casa entre lo material que se llevaron también fueron papeles de mi esposa y míos pasaporte y visas. Eso fue lo mas complicado ya que en una semana poder sacar esos papeles era casi imposible y pensé no llegaría al Olympia pero tuve la fortuna de lograrlo en los pocos días que tenía para hacerlo. 
 BPI: What division did you compete in at the Olympia?
Translation: ¿En qué división compitiste en el Olympia?
 Ismael: Men’s physique pro.
BPI: Do you think you came with your best package?
Translation: ¿Sientes que viniste con tu mejor paquete?
Ismael: Not really. A week before, I stopped my diet and going to the gym. I was busy looking for the way to get my papers. But, I’m happy to have reached the Olympia and have a new vision to compete there again in 2019.
Translation: No realmente una semana antes tuve deje de hacer mi dieta al 100 y de ir al gym ya. Que estuve ocupado buscando la Forma de conseguir mis papeles, pero contento de haber llegado al evento de mi vida y con una nueva visión de lograrlo nuevamente para el 2019.
 BPI: Is there anything you would change about your preparation?
Translation: ¿Hay algo que cambiarías acerca de tu preparación?
 Ismael: Not really. I think everything was fine, but I can improve every year. I will aim to improve my package next year.
Translation: Realmente no, creo todo fue bien solo que cada año se puede mejorar y buscaré mejorar mi versión este próx año.

BPI: What was your goal for the Olympia?
Translation: ¿Cuál fue tu meta al llegar al Olympia?
Ismael: Being in the top 10.
Translation: Estar dentro del top 10. 
 BPI: What were the results?
Translation: ¿Cómo te ubicaste en el Olympia?
 Ismael: I got fifth call outs.
Translation: En el 5th call out.
 BPI: Were you happy with this placement?
Translation: ¿Estabas contento con esta colocación?
 Ismael: No, I really expected more. Of course, I know I need to improve some aspects to be in the top, and a part of me is happy just to have been there, but I know I can give more.
Translation: No, realmente esperaba más pero claro estoy claro qué hay que mejorar algunos aspectos para poder estar en el top y de cierta forma contento de haber logrado llegar ahí pero sé que puedo dar más.
 BPI: How was your experience at the BPI Sports’ booth?
Translation: ¿Cómo fue tu experiencia en el stand de BPI Sports en el Olympia?
 Ismael: Incredible! It is amazing to be so well received in another country, especially after the bad taste left in my mouth from the incident at home. The people who came to meet me and the BPI team really made me feel at home.
Translation: ¡Increíble! Es increíble ser tan bien recibido en otro país más después de mal sabor de boca que tenía con el insistente en casa. Las personas que fueron a saludarme y el equipo BPI me hizo sentirme en casa realmente.
 BPI: What’s next?
Translation: ¿Qué sigue?
 Ismael: I’m going to rest for a few months. My body needs it to be able to come back with a better package next year. I still don’t have set dates for my first competition of 2019, but I know I will make it to the Olympia again in 2019.

Healing Veterans Across the U.S.

Help Heal Veterans (Heal Vets) is finding new ways to honor the memory of a fallen hero, and help returning veterans at the same time.

If you have lost a loved one in military service, you will understand the importance of Memorial Day. Additionally, taking care of returning veterans is an ongoing mission for Heal Vets. In recent weeks they have partnered with "Walking Dead" actress Kerry Cahill. Kerry Cahill describes herself as an army brat growing up in small rural towns of Montana, Oregon, and Texas.

In 2009 Cahill’s life changed forever when her father Michael Cahill who was fatally shot while working at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas.

Kerry Cahill joined forced with Help Heal Veterans (Heal Vets) to create a wristband in memory of her father similar to the one he wore daily.

Heal Vets arts and crafts also provide therapy for veterans suffering from memory loss, stroke or extremity weakness.

"My dad was a hero he died saving the lives of others, and that is how I want his legacy to continue, helping others," says Kerry Cahill.

"When we first saw Michael Cahill's wristband it inspired us to share his story further. His life was a mission to heal veterans and our military. And he dedicated his life to the healing process. And he gave his life to protect those he treated. Working with his daughter Kerry Cahill on developing Cahill Wristband has been an honor." Says Heal Heal Veterans CEO Joe McClain

Heal Vets provides Arts and crafts therapy kits to help the rehabilitation of veterans. From those recuperating from injuries such as PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. Heal Vets arts and crafts also provide treatment for veterans suffering from memory loss, stroke or extremity weakness. Help Heal Veterans has distributed more than 31 million kits since 1971 from hundreds of craft categories.

McClain adds, "PTSD and TBI are growing issues with returning veterans. The importance of taking care of all wounds both physical and mental is a priority. Complete wellness has to be addressed for veterans to go back to fruitful and fulfilling civilian life." Says McClain.

Initially, as Decoration Day the day originated from the years following the Civil War. Ending in 1965, the Civil War took more lives than any conflict in U.S. history.

Nevertheless, in 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day.

Waterloo—which first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866—was chosen because it hosted an annual, community-wide event, during which businesses closed, and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags.

The tragic loss of life led to the country claiming land to build national cemeteries. By the 1860’s towns and villages were holding springtime tributes to their fallen loved ones.

Kerry Cahill is on a mission to ensure Michael Cahill’s work continues and to make sure that day filled with fate in November 2009 has a legacy and meaning.

"The wristband will be part of the craft kits provided by Heal Vets to veterans nationwide. The kits help give veterans a purpose and work well to distract them from the horrors of war and assist in helping them live a somewhat normal life. The goal for both myself and Heal Vets is to create something that keeps the memory of my father and his work in the area of mental health and to help those suffering from post-traumatic syndrome (PTSD)," says Cahill.

For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend for federal employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a national holiday.

"Memorial Day is about remembering military and veterans. Everyone should take the time to remember that because of the brave we are the land of the free," says McClain.

When God Promises, He Delivers

Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, Jeremiah, what do you see? And I said, I see a branch or shoot of an almond tree [the emblem of alertness and activity, blossoming in late winter]. Then said the Lord to me, You have seen well, for I am alert and active, watching over My word to perform it. - Jeremiah 1:11,12 (Amplified)

Often when I share scripture with you, I'm learning to apply it my own life as well. While it's easy to say that God will uphold His Word, it's a different matter entirely to support this truth with our Faith and Conduct. If we really believe that God will perform His Word (and I mean every time), then, we must closely examine our own actions if our lives do not line up with His promises.

God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill? - Numbers 23:19

It is clear from this passage that God will fulfill His promises. As an example, God has promised amazing results if we first, fully obey God and then, carefully follow ALL His commands. So, I must conclude that I'm doing something wrong if I'm not getting the results that He promised. Otherwise, I would be calling God a liar, and that is just not the truth.

So, here's the challenge. If you are experiencing anything that is contrary to the blessings lined out in Deuteronomy 28, ask God to show you where you're missing it. Then, when He does, correct it.

For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God. They ask me for just decisions and seem eager for God to come near them. (Isaiah 58:2)

How do we know God's ways? Does God talk to you? How do you know God is talking to you? I spend time with God every day to get to know him better. One of the primary ways that I get to know God is by reading the Bible. His thoughts, feelings, and actions are in full display as shared by the writers who were Divinely inspired. When I spend time reading the Bible and listening to scripture, I begin to hear His voice in my daily activities. How do I know that it's His voice? What He's saying resonates with the Word that I've hidden in my heart.

Over the years, I've discovered that this process requires diligence to be effective. I like to memorize scripture and meditate on specific verses. As I do this, I receive understanding, or revelation, of that scripture. Some scriptures that I've meditated on previously will have an even deeper meaning when I come back to them later. What I'm trying to say is that the Bible is not just a book like other books, the Words in the Bible are Spirit and Life. As you consider each passage, the meaning speaks to your mind and heart at the same time. Your mind is renewed and your spirit is fed.

Once I have thoroughly prepared my heart with God's Word, then, I'm able to fellowship with Him. When I know who He is and what He wants, we are able to have a relationship. He talks, I listen. I talk, He listens.

WE BELIEVE...as children of God, we are overcomers and more than conquerors and God intends for each of us to experience the abundant life He has in store for us.

DR. O: YOU’RE GOING TO BECOME INSULIN RESISTANT ON A KETO DIET

James Grage: Ketones. They fuel your brain but they also fuel your nervous system too, correct?
James: So since a lot of strength is neural strength, being on a ketogenic diet might actually help you.
Dr. O: As you know, these powerlifters say, “I did it all on this ketogenic diet!” They don’t realize it’s a different energy system. All you gotta do is just take a lot of creatine before and that’s gonna maximize or optimize that technique. That’s the phosphocreatine system. That’s two seconds. It has nothing to do with glucose or glycolysis or any of that stuff. There’s a big difference between correlation and causality. They’ve assumed causality – that they were able to get to that point by virtue of the fact that they’ve been on a ketogenic diet when in actuality it doesn’t have anything to do with it. It works! In other words you can be a powerlifter on a ketogenic diet. Can you be a big bodybuilder? No. It’s not gonna happen.
James: So carb cycling. That’s another big trend. Whitney and I have both done carb cycling – so periods of very low carb and then periods of moderate carb. When it comes to insulin sensitivity, one of the potential down sides of the ketogenic diet is developing issues with insulin sensitivity.
Dr. O: Right, even though that’s paradoxical. People think you’re going to be very, very insulin sensitive because all your insulin receptors are gonna be up regulated because there’s no insulin floating around. In actuality what ends up happening is that your body sort of loses the ability to even utilize insulin because you’re not using glucose as an energy source.
James: It’s gotten lazy!
Dr. O: Correct. You may see a bit of a bump in your hemoglobin A1c – so your long-term measure of blood glucose control – may actually go up slightly when you’re on a ketogenic diet. So you go, “Uh oh!” Meanwhile, you’ve shed 40 lbs. of body fat, your inflammatory markers are down… But what’s the real barometer of whether or not you are doing something good for your body? You see your hemoglobin A1c go up, which is bad for your body. Right? That means you can’t really process blood sugar well and you’re less insulin sensitive. Check the fasted insulin level.
James: That’s the difference.
Dr. O: It’s gonna be really low. Does that make sense? That’s the big thing! That’s why you can’t get tricked. Why is your hemoglobin A1c going up? Because you are a little insulin resistant.

James: So in a carb-cycling scenario, let’s say five days of low carb and then 2 or 3 days that are a little bit higher. Would that potentially help with insulin sensitivity?
Dr. O: Probably. Remember, if you’re not “clamped” metabolically speaking, five days on and five days off probably isn’t going to hurt you. Whereas, as an example, if you were fully ketogenic and you’d been on the diet for six or twelve weeks, then you’re “clamped.” You’re keto adapted. You are functionally insensitive at that point. I don’t know what this looks like, but if you were to have a bolus of carbohydrates, your sugar is gonna go straight through the roof.
James: Ya, your body is gonna have all this glucose in your blood and your body won’t produce enough insulin…
Dr. O: Right. You’re not gonna process it. I don’t know what the data is, but that said, and I know this from personal experience and from my friends and family that have been on a keto diet: if you do that and you are “clamped,” if you have crap to eat and your sugars run up, I can tell you that when they do come down, your body is not going to be out of ketosis. If you go right back on the eating regimen, you’re not gonna take three days to get back into ketosis. That’s why I call it the “clamp.” You’re metabolically clamped.
James: That is if you go back on a ketogenic diet. My concern is long-term sustainability. I’m gonna piss off all my vegan friends out there, but the reason I use this as an example is that I’ve watched every single one of them go back to eating meat at one point. I’ve even seen it after crazy periods of time. Ten years! 15 years!
Dr. O: What was the reason?
James: They sat in a restaurant and a steak went by and they went, “Mmmm man…” Then they ate it and thought, “What was I doing?!” So my concern is, what happens when you do a ketogenic diet over a long period of time and you become insulin resistant but then you go back to eating the way you did before.
Dr. O: Well going back to the way the individual was eating before, I assume it was eating badly.
James: An American diet. Eating a lot of high-glycemic carbs.
Dr. O: My thought is that the body is very smart and probably transitions over fairly quickly.
James: It has to. Otherwise you’re gonna die.
Dr. O: Ya, exactly. Your blood sugars are gonna be through the roof. Then you stress the pancreas and just start producing more insulin. Which is one of the reasons why being on these low-insulin diets is also good. There’s less pancreatic burn out because you’re not constantly secreting insulin into the bloodstream. One of the reasons people become insulin resistant – and a lot of people don’t know this – is not because you become peripherally insulin resistant at the level of the cell, it’s because your pancreas burns.
James: So you can become insulin resistant by not having any carbohydrates or very low carbohydrates over a long period of time, but can’t you also become insulin resistant by having too much carbohydrates over a long period of time?
Dr. O: Of course! It’s called Type 2 diabetes.

3 Kinds of STDs - Austin

When one speaks of sexually transmitted diseases, many may think of it as just HIV or AIDS. Actually there are lots of other STDs aside from the two mentioned. Some may be as dangerous and some may treated with medications. So, what really causes these diseases? And what are the possible complications that the disease may give?

There are three kinds of sexually transmitted diseases. These are the bacterial, viral and parasitic. The bacterial infections are caused by germs or bacteria. Bacterial STDs include Chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. These diseases are curable and may be treated with antibiotics. However, though curable, they still have to be attended to right away to prevent further health damages such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), reproductive health problems and infertility.

Viral STDs are more dangerous than the bacterial ones. They are carried in a person’s body for life once infected. These are often incurable by medications.
