Education, Training and Duties of Emergency Medical Technicians in Pennsylvania
By: Jeremy Smith

Emergency medical technicians in Pennsylvania are trained to handle a variety of different emergencies. Whether someone has suffered a heart attack or has received a trauma as a result of an accident, these are some of the first people that arrive on the scene. They have a variety of different duties and responsibilities and the course of action that they may take will depend on several different factors. This can include the condition of the individual being treated and their certification level, to name a few.

Bad45: Tacfit Bodyweight And Dumbell System

Scope of Practice

The scope of practice for an EMT is based upon his or her education and training background. An example of this is the paramedic and what is commonly referred to as the first responder. While both classes of personnel are trained in basic life support measures and performing critical assessment, there are some limitations to what each group may or may not do. The laws in Pennsylvania stipulate this requirement to ensure that the person does not carry out any intervention that they do not have the appropriate skills to safely do. Regardless of the specific title, the person must also be certified.

Types of Care That May Be Provided

The tech may provide multiple services. This may include but is not limited to the administration of oxygen, CPR, IV therapy and management of airways. Some may even be allowed to splint body parts, utilize an automated external defibrillator (AED) and give certain medications. The goal of those in this profession is not only to save lives, but to stabilize the person until medical treatment can be sought from qualified and licensed health care personnel.

Training and Education

Those seeking a career in this field must complete some form of approved training. Educational requirements consist of acquiring hands-on skills in a lab or another appropriate setting and some type of lecture or book work. Course components may contain education in areas such as cardiology, pharmacology and respiratory management for example. After successful completion of an approved curriculum, the graduate is eligible to obtain certification.

Job Prospects

Emergency medical technicians in Pennsylvania may be paid or volunteer their time, seeking no reimbursement. Those that choose to make this a career will have several different opportunities available to them. The most common employers are typically the agencies that respond to numerous types of situations, such as the local fire department and ambulance services.

Write the Vision
By: Akili Kumasi
An Open Letter to Christian Authors

Recently God showed me seven interesting facts about our job as Christian authors. Herein is a summary:

Our Purpose

  • All Christians we have a general purpose. We have been entrusted with the Ministry of Reconciliation. That is, with the help of the Holy Spirit "We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us." (2 Corinthians 5:18, 20 NIV). Generally, as Christians we are to tell the world about our Savior. We are to tell the world who Christ is. We are to tell them about His love (Ephesians 3:17-19; 1 John 4), about His peace (John 14:27), about His power (Ephesians 1:17-23; 2 Corinthians 12:8-10; Luke 10:19) and much more - but especially about His plan for salvation.
  • The Bible says, "My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge." (Hosea 4:6 NIV). We need to take that scripture and expound on it because it also says the reason for the "lack of knowledge" or the lack of knowing God intimately is "Because you have rejected knowledge." Have you rejected God's knowledge?

Specifically, in Hosea 4:6 God was telling the priests of Israel that they were not doing their jobs and that He would also reject them as priests. The priests were not showing the people how to live and thus the people of Israel were forsaking God and His way of life.

Today, in the 21st century, we can substitute the term "priest" with anyone who knows God but does not share that knowledge. Our job as Christian writers is to make sure that the knowledge of Jesus Christ is presented to the world in our writings.
  • We are to know Jesus Christ so intimately ourselves that we become experts at explaining who He is.
  • We are to Write the Vision that God gave to each of us to share with the world. We are to share that vision through the tools, talents, abilities, interest, modes of expression and individual creativity that He gifted and equipped each one of us with.
  • We are to Write the Vision of God's love for the world and everyone in it.
  • We are to Write the Vision of the peace that God sent with His Son.
  • We are to Write the Vision of heaven and the plan of salvation.

It all begins and ends with His plan for salvation.

    God's Communication

In Habakkuh 2:2 KJV we are told to "Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables so that he may run that readeth it." We have to Write the Vision of God so people can read our publications and run with them.

Look closely at that same scripture from the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible:

    Write down the revelation
and make it plain on tablets
so that a herald may run with it.

The NIV uses the term "revelation" where the King James Version (KJV) uses "vision." The meanings are the same and refer to a communication from God. (See the Strong's Concordance #H2377, a Bible Lexicon or Bible Dictionary.)
  • The Role of the Herald

The NIV usage of the term "herald" is an interesting one. One of the meanings of the word "herald" according to dictionary.com is "a person or thing that proclaims or announces." This indicates that whoever is going to read the Vision that is written is going to pass the message along to others.

Several Bible commentaries explain that God's command to "make it plain on tablets" was a reference to posting His message on stone tables that would be placed in the town square where everyone could see it. The writing was to be so big that anyone who was walking or running by would easily be able to read and understand the message that was inscribed on the "tables."

How is your writing? Is it that big?

Live By The Word of God

We also understand that the underlying reason for any message from God is to give people instructions that should guide their living. This indeed is God's purpose for any Christian author, to pass on the vision or revelation to God's people, to help guide their living.

Let us look at the scripture again - but his time with substitutions from our explanations above:

Write down the [communication from God]
and make it [so big that anyone can see it in public places]
so that [the message can be passed along].

In Proverbs 29:18 KJV we are told that "Where there is no vision, the people perish." Again, the NIV uses different terms than the KJV. It says, "Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint."

Using the substitution technique again, we see that:

Where there is no [communication from God]
the people [have no restraint] and [thus] perish.

There is a second part to that verse that should also be reported:

... but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. (KJV)
... but blessed is he who keeps the law. (NIV)

"The law" of course refers to God's law. Thus, the person who keeps the law or adheres to the communication from God is happy or blessed. Can it be anymore clear than that?

And finally, in 2 Corinthians 4:3-5 New Living Translation (NLT) we are told that:

If the Good News we preach is veiled from anyone, it is a sign that they are perishing.

Satan, the god of this evil world, has blinded the minds of those who don't believe, so they are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News that is shining upon them. They don't understand the message we preach about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.

Keep in mind that the enemy never sleeps. He is engaged in a non-stop and un-compromising effort to keep people from hearing the message of the Cross. This makes our role as Christian writers even more crucial. We must write what God has given to us - as heralds - to run with.

Thank you for reading this Bible Study Article, Write the Vision. It is my hope that from this article we can clearly see our critical role to Write the Vision of God for all to see. What we as authors do (or do not do) has an impact on the people of this world. Imagine if the Apostle Paul had decided to write something else instead of writing what is now most of the New Testament.

    Are you ready?

God's love to all of you, and remember, Write the Vision.

Minding Your Business-5 Reasons to Hire a Financial Planner

Presented on US Sports Net By Yahoo Small Business!

    By: Chelsey Bullock

Balancing and planning out your finances can be a very difficult task for everyone. Life can throw anything at you, and it's up to you to be ready to catch it. The same goes for your finances; you never know when an expensive emergency will arise. By hiring a financial planner, you will be better prepared to handle anything that may come your way. Here are five reasons to consider hiring a financial planner.

Determining your financial status: A financial advisor will help determine where you stand with your total income versus your debts. Together, you will be able to come up with a game plan to reduce the debts and improve your overall income for a validated savings account for emergencies.

Plan a retirement strategy: Are your retirement funds enough to live on with your current expenses? If not, you need to figure out how to invest more money into your retirement. In life, there are always unexpected expenses. It's best to view your long-term financial goals and outside holdings into account to determine how much you should be investing towards your future.

Written provisions for child care: This is a topic that should determine the day your children are born. If you or your spouse die, it's very important to have written provisions for their care. They are your number one priority, and together you and your financial advisor will determine what they need to have financially after you are gone.

Find investments for your wealth: Investments can be a great way to boost your financial status. But what investments should you invest in, so you don't lose money? A financial advisor knows how to handle investments like stocks and other exchanges.

Determine a budget that’s right for your family: Is your monthly income less than your monthly spending? If so, there need to be improvements made to secure your finances and future for your family. A financial advisor will give you advice on how to stay on track and where your lifestyle needs to change to better your finances.

These five reasons only scratch the surface of what a financial advisor can do for you. To learn more about financial planning visit The Investment Advisors of Utah, where together you and the financial advisor can determine the changes and investments that will need to be made to better you and your family's financial future.

If you are planning to retire in Salt Lake City you could benefit from having a professional investment advisor. Having a financial planner in Utah to help guide you will pay off when retirement arrives.

    Health Food Myths

Hitch Fit Myth Busters On US Sports Net!

The Top 5 Health Food Myths

The world of food is mixed with both fact and fiction. One day, we’re hearing that a certain product is an excellent source of protein, the next we find out that it supposedly can be a major cause of cancer and worse than smoking a pack of cigarettes. Who can we even trust anymore!?
To help with the confusion, we are going to lay out the top 5 myths that you need to be aware of. We’ve been in this industry for over 20 years—we know what works and what doesn’t. We know what foods you need to eat versus the ones you shouldn’t.

So what is the truth about nutrition? You might be surprised!! Here are the top 5 health food myths we are looking to crack:
MYTH #1: High fructose corn syrup is worse than table sugar
Sugar has never been good for you. In any form you consume it, you should make sure to do so in moderation—if at all. That’s old news. What most people falsely assume, however, is that table sugar is better for you than high fructose corn syrup. The truth is, table sugar and HFCS are made up of the same things; they are both a 50-50 blend of fructose and glucose. So to your body, the two products are just sugar. The reason why HFCS has such a bad reputation is because it’s so cheap. As a result, it’s added to almost any pre-packaged food (i.e. cereal, salad dressing, etc.).
MYTH #2: Eggs are bad for your heart
Eggs contain a considerable amount of cholesterol in theiryolks, and cholesterol is what contributes to clogged arteries and heart attacks. This does not mean that eggs are absolutely bad for your heart though!! The cholesterol we eat doesn’t even have a big impact on raising blood cholesterol. Your body compensates by making less cholesterol itself. Eggs contain plenty of beneficial nutrients and should be eaten in balance with other healthy foods. So what are we trying to say exactly? Eat eggs!! They’re nutritious and delicious (and filling!).
MYTH #3: All carbohydrates make you fat
Contrary to popular belief, there’s nothing inherently fattening about carbs. It’s when you eat too many of them that you get fat. “Good carbs”, such as whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables, are your body’s main source of fuel as well excellent nutrients and fiber. Our advice to you? Load up on a lot more veggies than fruits. You’ll get the carbs you need without all the sugar.
MYTH #4: Calories you eat before bed are worse than those you eat during the day
Most people believe that calories eaten at night contribute more to weight gain because your body isn’t capable of burning as many when you sleep. In reality, calories are calories. What you eat when the sun goes down doesn’t miraculously turn to fat. It doesn’t really matter what time you eat—what matters (quite obviously) is what you eat. You should watch the total amount of calories you take in each day and make sure your body’s metabolism can handle it.
MYTH #5: Food is better for you when it’s organic
Studies haven’t been able to prove that organic products have the nutritional edge over their counterparts. Organic tomatoes you find at the farmer’s market have just as many vitamins as the regular ones you find at the grocery store. What makes the biggest difference in nutrients is how long a product sits on the shelf. The abundance of vitamins and nutrients decreases more and more between harvest and consumption. Also, the organic fried chips you buy aren’t any healthier than the fried Lays you used to get. Fried is fried!!!
Some of these facts may be disheartening, some may give you hope. There are countless myths in the world of food and we’re breaking more and more of them everyday. So next time you decide not to eat something because of all the unhealthy things you’ve heard about it, consider the fact that it could be the next big source of nutrients (or vice versa!).  Be aware of these top 5 health food myths!

America: Both Sides of a Coin
    By: Fred Eghobor

Since its founding on July 4, 1776, America has lived up to its ideals as a nation and has been a true force for good in the world. The United States remains the world’s only superpower following the disintegration of the former Soviet Union.

America rules the world not because of its size, but because of its firm foundation, and the resilience, brilliance and imaginative husbandry of its resources – both human and material.

For over half a century now, the United States has maintained the best and strongest military known to man and has used its military edge to remain the dominant power, shaping a global environment that is conducive to its values and interests.

The U.S. and its allies, under the visionary leadership of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, ended World War II, thwarting Hitler’s ambition to be the dominant global power.

After the defeat of Nazi Germany and the end of the war, the U.S. did not merely leave the vanquished to lick their wounds. Instead, it cared. America took the initiative to rebuild Western Europe by providing economic support through the Marshall Plan, and in the process, gave its former adversaries the opportunity for a new beginning.

Apparently, to serve a noble cause, the American military has been involved in several other international conflicts. Between 1990 and 1991, America (with its allies) stopped Saddam Hussein’s brazen attempt to annex Kuwait. When the Serbs in the former Yugoslavia, under the leadership of Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic, engaged in "ethnic cleansing" to rid Kosovo of ethnic Albanians, the U.S. and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) intervened decisively to stop the carnage and halt the genocide. Milosevic was arraigned before the International Court of Justice in The Hague for atrocities against humanity.

Besides military successes, America has been on the leading edge of science and technology. The innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of its people is unsurpassed. Most human-made inventions bear an America’s signature. The Wright brothers invented the "big bird" (airplane); Henry Ford developed the automobile, and hardworking Americans built the first railway during the Industrial Revolution.

America leads in solar system exploration. Through sheer determination and doggedness, it ventured into uncharted territories and stunned the world by landing on the moon. In its decision to do so, President John F. Kennedy, in his address before a joint session of Congress on May 25, 1961, said: "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth."

This speech propelled NASA’s Apollo 11 program’s race to the moon. Seven years later, on July 20, 1969, an American, Neil Armstrong, became the first man to step on the moon. History was made.

Beyond space and moon explorations, NASA is currently developing the capability to send humans to Mars and asteroid. This is not going to be an easy task either. However, it certainly will be the hallmark of America’s resolve to explore the celestial bodies.
The U.S. military invented the internet during the cold war era and ultimately is credited with the development of the world-wide web, which has transformed the world into a global village.

America’s other inventions run like a telephone directory list: The light bulb, the microchip, the telephone, the radio, and transistor – all are products of America’s innovation. Google, Apple products and social networking services (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) are the results of American creativity.

In medicine, Americans are always making breakthroughs, discovering new ways to cure and manage diseases. Its hospitals rank among the best in the world. Advances in medicine in the last century have saved lives and contributed to improved health and increased longevity.

America should be proud of its tradition of generosity and support for good causes. In philanthropy, not too many countries can boast of such generous men and women, and foundations as the John D. Rockefeller, Henry Ford, Bill and Melinda Gates, Andrew Carnegie, Clinton, and many others. All of them are helping to find solutions to global problems plaguing humanity. America also tops the list as the largest donor of foreign aid in the world.
After World War II, American opened its doors wide to Holocaust survivors, who had no homes to go back to, and provided hope and healing. Today, the United States welcomes immigrants from around the globe and is home to the largest immigrant population. Migrants of different races, different accents, and diverse backgrounds, derive their living – many earning more money than native-born whites – from its generosity.

America remains a resilient nation despite challenges to the Union. The country survived the Civil War of 1861-1865 to remain a unified nation. Also, in the nineteenth century, America joined other civilized nations of the world to abolish slavery, and usher in an era of freedom for the captives. Since the middle of the twentieth century, the country has also made steady progress in the area of civil rights. After years of protracted struggle against inequality and segregation in the American public school system, on May 1954, in the landmark decision Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional.

The struggle for civil rights in other spheres of American life continued. In the mid-1950s, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led the movement for the advancement of civil rights in America, prompting President Kennedy to call for civil rights legislation in mid-1963. Following his assassination, this bill was signed into law on July 2, 1964, by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Subsequently, in 1965, the historic Voting Rights Act was enacted, prohibiting once and for all the prevention of African Americans from exercising their right to vote under the Fifteenth Amendment (Amendment XV) to the United States Constitution.

However, beneath these remarkable success stories lies a façade of unenviable contradictions. While the country rises to greatness, concurrently there was an era of the corrupt Jim Crow system of segregation, the prohibition of the display of the Ten Commandments on public school walls and in government buildings, state-sanctioned transgender lives, and everything in between. Overall, the U.S. is an outlier for good and for bad.

Many witnessed the age of Jim Crow laws that legitimized and enforced racial segregation, mandating discrimination in public places, education, restrooms, restaurants, transportation and many other areas. The system also created impediments to the ability of blacks to vote. Even though the 15th Amendment, passed on March 30, 1870, had granted African-Americans the right to vote, many strictures were devised to prevent blacks from exercising their rights until the passage of the Voting Rights Act.

Notwithstanding, racial tension still exists between white and blacks today. The killing of unarmed black men, including Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, David Felix, Freddie Gray, Darrell Gatewood, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile and others – are poignant reminders that race issues in America are far from over, especially against the backdrop that many who perpetrated these killings were never prosecuted. George Zimmerman, who fatally shot an unarmed teenager, Martin, was acquitted of second-degree murder by a Florida jury. He has since become both a rallying point for opponents of gun control and a hero to a movement whose supporters believe they are fighting for the life and soul of their Second Amendment rights to bear arms.

In foreign policy, America’s international relations over the years have been marred by inconsistency, hypocrisy, and insincerity. Though officially opposed to Apartheid, for a long time, America implemented policies that fueled South Africa’s economy with massive investments. America justified its action under the guise that loans and investments would improve social and economic conditions for South Africans.

At the United Nations Security Council, America either abstained or blocked sanctions against South Africa. Furthermore, the United States hindered attempts to expel South Africa from the United Nations, prompting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to say: "… the shame of our nation is that it is objectively an ally of this monstrous government in its grim war with its own black people."

President Ronald Reagan notably maintained a cozy relationship with the white minority rule and faithfully supported Pretoria politically, economically, and militarily, thereby helping to prop up Apartheid. Under Reagan’s "constructive engagement" policy, Apartheid evil policies festered.

However, despite Reagan’s government pro-apartheid stance, shocking news media images of the violent struggles against apartheid in South Africa galvanized public support for the anti-apartheid movement in the United States. In 1985, New Jersey Governor, Thomas Keane, signed legislation to withdraw $2 billion in state investments from companies doing business in South Africa to protest black subjugation in that country. In his decision, he said: "… there are instances in human history when the gravity of an evil is so clear, and the cost of its continuance so great, that governments – at every level – must use every tool at their disposal to combat it. Apartheid is such an evil."1

In other parts of Southern Africa, America gave military assistance to the Portuguese military operations, particularly in Angola, while also supporting Dr. Jonas Savimbi’s National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) rebels against the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) government, to suppress nationalist movements for independence. In Central America, the U.S. gave financial and military support to the Nicaraguan Contras rebel army against the Sandinista Liberation Movement of National Reconstruction.

Whereas some of America’s military interventions have been praised as noble endeavors, there has been widespread criticisms of its inaction in conflicts elsewhere, conflicts that justifiably call for America’s response. Some believe that the U.S. does not undertake any venture where it does not anticipate direct or secondary benefits for itself. For instance, in 1994, America turned a blind eye to the genocide that was unfolding in Rwanda, which resulted in the massacre of an estimated 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus.

The reason for not intervening, U.S. authorities claimed, was that the painful lessons learned from disastrous peacekeeping efforts in Somalia were still fresh in its memory. Consequently, America decided never again to get involved in tribal conflicts it did not understand, and where the U.S. had no national interests. Rwanda offered no economic or strategic interest to America and, therefore, no incentive for military intervention. However, on his visit to the Rwandan capital of Kigali in 1998, President Bill Clinton officially apologized for America’s inaction.

America has suffered credibility and public relations problems from within and without. One dark moment in U.S. military invasions was justification for the 2003 Iraq war. President George W. Bush, in his January 2003 State of the Union address alleged that: "The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa." Subsequently, then Secretary of State, General Colin Powell made compelling arguments at the United Nations to justify American invasion based on the firm belief that Iraq possessed "weapons of mass destruction" (WMDs). A combination of faulty intelligence and deliberate falsehoods ultimately led to the invasion of Iraq and removal of President Hussein. WMDs were never found. Iraq has remained in turmoil ever since, while America gradually retreats from a nation in ruins.

More than anything else, the U.S. legal system makes America a land of contrasts. Suffice it to say that the ills of the criminal justice system parallel what is happening in many aspects of the larger society. But by far, the penal system is arguably one of the worst institutions in America.

Being the world’s greatest democracy is supposed to make America a faithful steward of the fairest and finest legal system the world has ever known. Paradoxically, the U.S. criminal justice system is undoubtedly one of the vilest; it is a world hidden from the world, an evil behind a veil. Mass incarceration, rogue prosecutions, overcrowding and deplorable conditions in jails and prisons, all cast a dark spell on America’s claim to justice, equity and fair play.

    The Key to Being Satisfied

Adapted from the resource Trusting God Day by Day Devotional - by Joyce MeyerWe all probably want more light in our lives. That would mean more clarity, better understanding, and less confusion. The prophet Isaiah declared that if we would divide our bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into our homes, cover the naked and stop hiding ourselves from the needs around us, our light would break forth (see Isaiah 58:7–8). He also said our healing and restoration and the power of a new life would spring forth quickly. That sounds good to me, and I am sure it does to you also.
Isaiah also wrote of justice, and he said it would go before us and conduct us to peace and prosperity, and that the glory of the Lord would be our rear guard. If we are actively helping the oppressed, God goes before us and He also has our backs! I like that feeling of safety and certainty.
Isaiah further said if we would pour out that with which we sustain our own lives for the hungry, and satisfy the need of the afflicted, our light would rise in darkness and any gloom we experienced would be comparable to the sun at noon (see Isa. 58:10). The sun is very bright at noon, so it sounds to me like helping people is the way to live in the light.
The Lord will guide us continually, and even in dry times He will satisfy us. He will make our bones strong and our lives will be like a watered garden (see Isa. 58:11). All of this happens as a result of living to bring justice to the oppressed.
I hope you are seeing what I am seeing through these promises. I think most of us waste a lot of our lives trying to get what God will gladly give if we simply do what He is asking us to do: care about the poor, the hungry, the destitute, orphans, widows, the oppressed, and needy. Live your life to help others, and God will satisfy you in every way possible.
Prayer Starter: Father, help me to always have compassion on those less fortunate...and take action to help them in their time of need. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
