Inside Look at Training New York Police Officers and Why Should I Study Criminal Justice Online?

Scores of New York Police Department officers are being sent to a new $750 million police academy for a refresher course aimed at discouraging verbal abuse and needless physical force. The Associated Press got an exclusive look at the course. [Video Below]

Why Should I Study Criminal Justice Online?
By: Gavin Eastwood

Criminal justice degrees are available online through a number of institutions. These are rigorous, demanding online programs but not every program is perfect for every student. If you’ve been out of school for some time and you're used to working every day, and you're accustomed to the internet and navigating and interacting with people in a virtual environment then a criminal justice, if the subject interests you, is something you should consider. If you’ve never studied, and are worried about adjusting to a full time on-campus program, then an online degree in criminal justice is also a very good option. An online criminal justice degree from an accredited school will carry the same weight and qualify you for just as many employment opportunities as any offline degree but with a much more flexible study schedule.
What do I do with an online degree in Criminal Justice?

Most people assume that an online criminal justice degree qualifies you to be a cop. In fact a criminal justice degree is not always required to work at your county, city or municipal level. An online degree in criminal justice will help get your foot in the door and it will vastly increase your potential for job advancement. Most police departments have a more or less military-style hierarchy starting at the officer or corporal level and moving up to sergeant, lieutenant, captain, and finally the chief of police. Detectives are then employed in a parallel department and still larger departments will offer further areas of specialization like local patrols, SWAT or canine patrols and gang and narcotics enforcement areas. But advancing from any of these levels to the next one up requires a lot of work and an online criminal justice bachelors or master’s degree is a big step in the right direction.

Depending on the size of your locality or where you want to work, local criminal justice is only the beginning. Every state in the US employs troopers who may enforce traffic laws on state or interstate highways and they are trained to respond to emergencies and to assist local departments and there are again areas of specialization like security and investigation at higher levels.

At the federal level, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Agency, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the U.S. Customs Service all employ criminal justice graduates. Many of them are now within the US Department of Homeland Security.

Earning your online criminal justice degree introduces you to crime prevention, law enforcement and senior and junior public offenders’ rehabilitation. Students of criminal justice are often presented with an option to train as localized security specialists with a view to moving into homeland security and those who complete a degree in criminal justice can expect a wide range of career choices with local, state and federal agencies or within the legal system.
An online criminal justice study program will typically include courses such as the following:
• Criminal Procedures
• Forensic Science
• Juvenile Justice
• Criminology
• Corrections
• Security
• Community Policing
• Hate Crimes & Groups
• Sex Crimes
• Law Enforcement Reporting & Recording
• Probation and Parole
• Ethics, Law, Psychology & the Justice System
All online criminal justice programs provide students with an informed perspective on the workings and components of the justice system at the local, state and federal levels. And whether you’re ultimate goal is an entry level job or to advance a career you’ve already begun, an online degree in criminal justice now makes studying and pursuing that career more possible and more convenient than ever before.

While in high school,Ryan shattered both of his legs, his hip AND his ankles in a tragic car wreck which left him paralyzed for months. His dreams of a sports career were crushed. ATTITUDE: THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STRUGGLING OR SOARING

by Taffi Dollar

We’ve all had bad days we’d rather forget, but some people seem to get through them better than others. Life is what we make it, and our attitude can make it a bitter struggle or an epic adventure. Some people admit to being a pessimist, which makes everything seem like an uphill climb. Deliberately choosing to see the silver lining in every cloud lines up with God’s optimistic Word and empowers us to soar high above what brings others down.
Our mindset also gives us the power to strengthen or hurt our relationships with others. We can either draw people to us because we’re pleasant to be around, or drive them away because no one wants to be around a grouch. Our thoughts can have physical manifestations: they can make us look like we just sucked on a lemon or put a smile on our faces. “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (Philippians 4:8). It can be easy to dwell on the negative, but deciding to change things up by meditating on the positive is a bit more challenging.
Jesus had the perfect attitude, and we can use Him as our example when we’re tempted to snarl at someone else. He humbly put others first and refused to be self-centered or conceited. “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5, NIV). This is virtually impossible to do on our own, but He’ll guide us in this area when we meditate on what we read about Him in the Scriptures and prayerfully ask Him for help.
The physical effects of the thoughts we harbor go even deeper than a smile or a frown—they can actually affect our health. “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones” (Proverbs 17:22). There’s a definite link between the mind and the body, and doctors are now acknowledging the role our thinking plays in either keeping us healthy or making us sick. Our attitude makes a major difference in our quality of life on all levels.
To foster healthy relationships with others, we must be on guard against the damaging effects of anger and bitterness, and be willing to forgive others. “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you” (Ephesians 4:31, 32). Everyone makes mistakes, and the way to move past them is to choose to let go of the emotional baggage that drags us down when we nurse grudges. “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye” (Colossians 3:13). This is part of true Christ-like humility.
Pessimism is the world’s mindset, but it can damage our souls and crush our spirits. This type of thinking isn’t God’s best for us. Trusting in Him when we’re struggling enables us to rise above negative thoughts. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13, NKJV). Believing this will allow Him to bless all our relationships.

THE #1 THING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HOW TO COACH OFFENSIVE LINE

It doesn’t matter how brilliant it looks on the chalkboard, if you can’t block it, you’re screwed.
As coaches we love to draw up all kinds of fun stuff, but when it comes time to execute, if you can’t get any movement up front at the line of scrimmage, you’ve got bigger problems that drawing up more plays won’t solve.
And that’s why you’re here, to solve a problem.
Bob Wylie has been coaching offensive line at the highest levels of the game for years, and today we’re gonna go over how to coach offensive line stance.

It’s all about angles

Relax, you’re not going back to geometry class, but there’s an important lesson here.
Whether it’s missed assignments, poor leverage, or all kinds of other issues offensive line coaches run into on a day-to-day basis, it can usually be traced back to their angle of departure off the line.
Usually the reason an offensive lineman departs from the wrong angle is because their stance is wrong. When your stance is wrong, it means your weight isn’t distributed properly which leads to wasted steps, false movement, and makes you slower as an offensive lineman.
Since we love you so much here at CoachTube, we decided to give you a checklist to go over when you’re teaching your players about the importance of stance.

The Feet

The stagger should be toe-to-head or toe-to-instep, with your inside foot up and your outside foot back.
Inside foot should be flat on the ground, outside foot should have about a half inch of air underneath the heel, no more than that. The outside foot should have toes slightly turned out just a little bit.

The Bend in the Knee

Bend your knees, and put your elbows on top of your knees.
When you bend down, your knees are gonna be inside your feet, not over your feet, make sure your knees are pointed inward just a little bit.
Take your off-arm, the hand that’s not on the ground, take the inside of the elbow and put it on the outside of the knee, keep your hand semi-relaxed.

The Hands

Put your down hand on the ground and put it somewhere is the area of your outside eye. Make sure all five fingertips are on the ground in front of you.
To be sure you’ve got it right, pick up your down hand and stretch it out in front of your. If you have to shift your body weight to stretch it out, your stance is wrong and you’ve got too much weight on your down hand.
When your weight is distributed wrong, it leads to false steps and wasted movement, which again, leads to playing slow.

Relax your muscles

The thing about it is, relaxed muscles move faster than tense muscles, so when the ball is snapped and you try to make a move, the first thing your body does relax itself if you’re all tensed up. Why not skip that step and just start out relaxed so you’re ready to go as soon as possible?

Taking Your First Step

We talked in the beginning about weight distribution, but we’re gonna talk about it again because it’s a huge part of this.
As an offensive lineman, you want to mentally transfer weight away from your opposite foot. Let me explain what I mean.
For example, if you have to step with your right foot, you’re gonna mentally shift your weight to your left foot so you can take your first step at the snap.
You don’t wanna make it harder to move your feet, and if you’re shifting weight to the first foot you’ll be moving at the snap, you’re making it so you’ve gotta move a concrete block instead of an empty cardboard box.
Don’t make it harder on yourself, move your weight to the correct foot!

Let’s wrap it up…
