How to Get the Most Out of Your Team Practice

We ask our players to give their best effort every single day they walk on the court, field or track. We say things like, "If you aren’t going to give me your best today, then don’t come at all", or "When you step inside these lines it is go time, leave everything else going on in your life outside." Constantly reminding them to be prepared to get better in practice, but as a coach, are you orchestrating the team to get the most out of the day as well?
To obtain the excellence you demand, there must be a system in place that helps your athletes succeed. Without the right system it is like demanding greatness from a powerlifter, but only training them with elastic bands and yoga balls. It won’t work. Your team may work hard, but it is up to you to train them smart. Here are a few tips that will help you get the most out of your team practices.

Competition

At some level, every player in their respective sport has a love for competition. It is the driving force that takes them to the next level, and the characteristic we all want to see in our players. You can have them do all of the drills you see in instructional sports videos during the off season, but team practice is when you fuel that competitive fire.
They work on individual drills to develop their skills regularly, but practice is the only time where the competition of a game can be simulated. It could be as simple as one on one defensive back drills, competitive ball security drills or full blown scrimmaging. Whatever the drill may be, the more you include competition, the more your players will be fully engaged in practice.
Adding more competition gives both the players and coaches a long list of benefits. Players can see how much their individual skill work has improved as well as gain confidence in practice from game-like situations.
As a coach, you can assess the skill-set each player brings to the team and the toughness they will exhibit in the games. We have all heard of the “practice player”, the kid who wins every basketball shooting contest, but as soon as the game starts they disappear. That has a lot to do with the psychology of the player, but the constant simulation of a real game can help them break through the mental barrier tremendously.
Practice without competition is not only boring for your players, but it lacks the one key substance every player and coach thrives off of. Add more competition to practice and you will see a greater sense of urgency, focus and drive amongst your players.

Switch It Up

If you plan to do the same drills, every practice, every day, then you are cheating your players out of getting better. Repetition is key for skill development, remembering plays and understanding the game as a whole. Yes, I agree. However, coming into a practice with the same setup as the day before will become extremely monotonous to your players.
The last thing you want is for your players to lose concentration and begin to “go through the motions”. At some point, they will learn the practice schedule and exploit it because they are not being challenged.
In every sport, there are a plethora of drills, practice schemes, competitions and techniques to choose from. Why not switch it up? Keep your players on their toes and ready to perform for you day in and day out.
As a coach, we like to stick to our philosophies and what we feel works best. That should not keep you from being able to develop practices that fit the same ideals, but with a unique structure.
It is similar to having our players walk into a classroom every day, with the same lesson plan, same structure, and the same practice exam, but expecting them to perform differently on the test. Not going to happen!
Get creative and use your expertise to continue to challenge your players in unique ways. Keep your philosophy but bring it to them with different points of view; you never know which player you might get through to that day.

Build Chemistry

Sorry coach, as much as you want to, you can’t compete for your players. When your team is in the game, it is on their shoulders to work together and come back with the win. Practice is the best time to build that team chemistry.
First, you must develop the camaraderie and build the trust. Put your team through drills that require them to work together to succeed. These drills can be in practice, but can also be incorporated into the weight room, on the track or with team bonding events. It doesn’t matter where these activities take place as long as a strong foundation is established.
Once they have the trust, it is your job to test it. Put them in situations that might arise during the game and see how each player reacts. Do they come together? Do they start to point fingers? Who is the leader?
In team sports, it is crucial to understand the identity of your team and which players will be an extension of you during the game. Building the chemistry and testing it during practice will be your greatest indicator.

Conclusion

Team practice is crucial for your success in pre-season training as well as during the season. The teams who are efficient and can obtain the most benefit from every workout are often the ones who remain on top. Use competition, creativity and trust building drills as much as possible to secure your spot with the best of them.

Minding Your Business-Reaching Your Goals Begins Here

Presented on US Sports Net by Yahoo Small Business!
By: Bill Treasurer
Most people perform better when they are heading toward a goal. But it is important to understand that the goals must motivate. If your goals leave you feeling inadequate, stressed out, or over-worked, then you will lack the motivation to complete them.

Goals that motivate have specific characteristics:

* Clarity. Clear goals are specific, measurable, actionable, realistic, and time-bound (SMART). When a goal is clear and specific, people know what needs to be done and what is expected.

* Challenge. We are often motivated by achievement, so we'll judge a goal by how difficult we perceive it to be. If it is too easy, we won't give it as much attention and energy. However, if it demands us to stretch ourselves in order to achieve the recognition of a job well done, we are more likely to be motivated to excel.

* Commitment. For goal setting to be effective, the goals need to be agreed upon and understood. While this doesn't mean you negotiate every goal with every employee, there is value in engaging the people working towards the goal in crafting it. When we help to create the stretch goal, we are more connected to the challenge and more willing to commit. The harder the goal, the more commitment is needed.

* Task Complexity. For goals that are highly complex, we have to not only give people sufficient time to meet the goal, but actually provide the time to practice or learn skills that are necessary for success. The purpose of goal setting is successful achievement, so you have to be careful that the conditions around the goal support that success rather than stifle it.

* Feedback. Incorporating feedback into the goal setting process allows for expectations to be clarified, difficulty to be adjusted, and recognition given. In particular, when a goal is long-term in nature, it's important to set benchmarks that help people gauge their success and see their achievement.

Once the goals are defined, each goal should be "drilled down" with specific objectives and measures. Objects can be thought of as the yardstick; measures can be thought of as the exact location on the yardstick of each goal area; and both short-term and long-term objectives and measures should be defined.

When determining your objectives and measures it can be helpful to ask, "How will we know when this goal is achieved?" "What, exactly, will be different around here when the goal is attained?"

I appreciate this simple statement from Sir Edmund Hillary: "You don't have to be a fantastic hero to do certain things - to compete. You can be just an ordinary chap, sufficiently motivated to reach challenging goals."

Hitchfit Online Personal Fitness Training Presents: Find Your Purpose on US Sports Net!

For many of us, struggle seems to be a part of our daily routine. Much like our morning coffee, or daily Hitch Fit email of encouragement, tough days and troubling situations occur more frequently than we would like.
How do you deal?
Viktor Frankl, an Austrian existential psychologist, stated that “in some way, suffering ceases to be suffering at the moment it finds meaning, such as the meaning of a sacrifice.” Frankl, whose experiences included Nazi concentration camps, found a way to deal with his incredible troubling situation by discovering meaning in it. Nietzsche also weighed in on this topic of concentration camp survivors, commenting that “He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.”
What’s my purpose?
Purpose, in life in general, should be about giving, and not getting. In order to find true purpose, we must look for more than success and happiness. These two things are the results of finding purpose. Aiming at success will only allow you to miss it! Pursuit of success is a much harsher trail than pursuit of your purpose in life. Once purpose is found, success naturally follows. To find yours, your values, passions, and strengths should be considered. What are you good at? What do you enjoy doing 24/7? What do you value most in life? The intersection of these answers is where you will find your purpose.
Now, practically live out your purpose!
For those of you who want to make money – psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky claims that only about 10 percent of happiness comes from things like fame, money, and status. If that’s the case, it would behoove you to sacrifice just a little bit of that money to pursue something that will produce true and unprecedented happiness!
How are you living out your purpose? Tell us in the comments below!
At Hitch Fit, our passion to help others find their happy, healthy place in life is what has driven us to our incredible world-wide success. Our strengths lie in assisting others with healthy choices – in diet, exercise, and life! Come see what we’re up to this week, and how we’ve helped our most recent fitness athletes.

"I Just Received a Bomb threat . . . what do I do?"
By: George Babnick

Does your company have a bomb threat policy and procedure? If you don’t know, or if you have one but have no real idea what it says, you are not alone.

Along with conducting workplace investigations for businesses, I also provide physical security consulting for businesses, organizations, and even some individuals. I have been surprised to learn than many businesses and organizations do not have any meaningful bomb threat management plan. Even in companies and organizations that have a written bomb threat management plan, I have discovered that many key employees have no real idea what the policy and procedure is and the policy has not been reviewed or updated in many, many years. To put it bluntly, this is not good. Not good at all.

Clubbell 5x5: Six Degree Strength

Bomb Threat Data

Accurate statistics on bomb threats in the US are limited because there is no single data accumulator for them and many bomb threats are not reported to authorities. But experience tells us that the vast majority of bomb threats are false in that there is no explosive device. The Hartford Insurance Company conducted an analysis of bomb threats and concluded that only about 5 to 10 percent of bomb threats involve real bombs. From my experience in law enforcement responding to numerous bomb threats, I suspect that much less than 5 percent of bomb threats involve real or hoax device bombs.

If the chance of a bomb threat being real is so small, why should a company or organization take the time to create a bomb threat policy and train employees on bomb threat procedure? If a bomb threat comes in via phone – just hang up. If a bomb threat is received by email or twitter – just hit the delete key. If a bomb threat comes in the mail – just throw it in the trash.

Well . . . that’s exactly what some companies and organizations do. Again, this is not good. Not good at all.

While most bomb threats are pranksters, persons with mental problems, disgruntled employees seeking to cause panic or disrupt operations, or someone else with no intent or ability to plant a real bomb anywhere, occasionally these bomb threats are real. The consequences of simply ignoring a bomb threat and then having a bomb explode are too horrible to contemplate. The Committee on the Protection of Federal Facilities against Terrorism said it more eloquently: "The risk may appear low or even negligible, but the consequences of even one severe occurrence are so great that appropriate mitigating measures must be considered."

Aside from the horrific consequences of a bomb exploding, it is also a Federal Crime to make a bomb threat. Making a false bomb threat is a federal offense punishable with a penalty of up to 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine or both. This penalty also applies to juvenile offenders. In most jurisdictions, making a false bomb threat is also a state crime and many state laws do not distinguish between false bomb threats and real bomb threats. The take away is that any bomb threat, real or fictitious, is a crime.

Why it is important to have a bomb threat management plan?

According to the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, about 25 percent of all bombings are carried out against commercial establishments. Although only a small percent of all bomb threats are real, even false bomb threats can cause disruption to business activities, anxiety to workers, and cost employers valuable time and money. Even when bomb threats turn out to be false, having a meaningful bomb threat policy and procedure and training employees on the policy and procedure demonstrates that management cares and provides a sense of security and safety to employees. If a bomb threat turns out to be real, preparedness can reduce injuries and property damage, reduce fear and panic, and help to reduce civil liability.

Creating a bomb threat management plan which includes policy and procedure and meaningful training to employees is not an overly complicated task, but it should be customized to the individual business. A one-size-fits-all policy copied from some template is not adequate. Also, creating a policy and procedure and training personnel requires some subject matter expertise. Ideally, a bomb threat management plan should not be a standalone policy but part of an overall Emergency Management Action Plan.

Basic elements of a bomb threat policy:

Everything that should be included in a written, well thought out bomb threat management plan is beyond the scope of this article but the basic elements include:

THREAT RECEPTION

Having established protocols for an employee to follow when a bomb threat is received whether it comes by telephone, letter, email, or some form of social media like Twitter or Facebook is essential. An employee who receives a bomb threat should know, without hesitation, what to do and who to notify. This can only be accomplished by establishing well thought out and practical threat reception protocols and training key personnel to the protocols.

ASSESSING THE THREAT

A threat assessment is the process of evaluating the threat in light of all the available evidence and judging the probability that the threat is likely to be carried out. A good threat assessment protocol involves coordination with local authorities, i.e., police and fire.

All threats, regardless of their apparent initial credibility, should be assessed based upon a systematic and quantifiable assessment methodology. Regardless of how improbable the bomb threat might seem, simply dismissing a threat without conducting a systematic threat assessment because it "sounded like a prank" or seemed to be "crazy talk" from a mentally ill person is not acceptable.

RESPONSE

Once the threat has been properly assessed, the appropriate response can be enacted. In some cases, the response might be:

Document the threat but take no action.

This response would be used when the threat assessment concluded that the threat was completely not credible.

Limited physical search of facilities without evacuation.

This response would be appropriate when the threat cannot be judged totally bogus, but there is a remote possibility that the threat might be credible. In these cases, the protocol could involve designated supervisors or senior employees checking certain predetermined areas (i.e., bathrooms, break rooms, lobbies, parking structures, etc.) where a bomb could be more easily deposited. It is important that anyone conducting searches be trained on how to conduct these searches and how to report and document their actions.

Personnel Relocation.

This involves moving personnel from an area deemed "vulnerable" to a safer area where they can shelter in place. It is akin to a partial evacuation. For example, if the threat assessment concludes that there could be a bomb inside a building, personnel might be temporarily "sheltered" in a parking structure or work yard.

Full Evacuation.

This action is the most disruptive and involves moving all personnel completely out of the suspected target area until authorities can determine that all premises are safe. Such an evacuation plan can also be used in cases of fire, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. Any full evacuation plan must include a plan to ensure that people with disabilities can evacuate the premises in a timely manner along with the able bodied.

Conclusion

It is absolutely vital for all companies and organizations – even small companies and organizations, to have a practical bomb threat management program.

Ideally a bomb threat management program should be a part of an overall Emergency Management Action Plan, but a standalone plan is better than no plan at all.

Failure to have a written bomb threat management program and failure to train personnel can cause unnecessary disruption in operations and anxiety among employees and customers. Moreover, the lack of a meaningful bomb threat management program can also increase liability if something happens.

Plain and simple: a well developed bomb threat management plan which includes meaningful training for all personnel, can save lives and is just a good business practice.

Managing Pressure at Home
By: Glenise Anderson

Working women have extra responsibilities and stresses to deal with. Not only do the stress and responsibility of the workplace need to be dealt with, the pressures of home must be dealt with as well. This often creates a lot of stress to those who feel they are unable to cope.

For women who have careers and families to take care of, unfortunately anxiety and stress becomes an integral part of their lives. This sometimes makes life difficult, as balancing things is a tough job. Balancing the responsibilities of work and home is quite challenging and women feel they need to do both perfectly.

In order to manage the pressures which are found in the home, the first thing required is for the family to be an understanding one. If the family understands they all need to pitch in and help, particularly during stressful times, the burden on the woman automatically. In order to manage, a woman should sit her family down and talk to them about the responsibilities which she has to undertake. Giving each member of the family their own tasks to complete is a good idea. When everyone contributes, the burden is minimized. Family are teams, and when everyone does their little bit to help, it helps keep the woman sane and the stress levels down to a minimum - physically or mentally.

Another way in which you can manage stress at home is to believe that you have the ability to do so! Believing in oneself helps a great deal and increases motivation. By believing you have the skills and capabilities of performing the tasks required of you, there is no force which can prevent you from doing the things you want to achieve. Sometimes it’s worth taking a step backwards, assessing where you may need to learn something to help you move through your life a little easier. Courses on time management, decision making (learning when to say no!) and getting organized can be invaluable in alleviating stress.

It’s these skills, which will help you live in the present moment. They will help you focus on home when you’re there and leave work at work. Constantly thinking about work while you are at home, is not only stressful, it’s exhausting. Everyone needs down time! Relaxation time is when the mind and body regenerate to give you the energy to continue.

If you have faith in yourself and in your abilities, there is no need to think about the outcome which may the result of your actions. Everyone does their best, where they are in that moment. There will be some difficult decisions you will have to take within the family environment – have confidence you are making the right decision and move on.

Another way stress can be managed is to deal with everything with an open mind. Look at things from other people’s perspectives. If you are having a problem, ask someone who has already been through the same thing.

Either way, accept that outcomes are not within your control. Live in the moment, do your best and manage whatever happens from your and other people’s decision.
