Yahoo Business Advisor-Determining Your Niche in Ecommerce
By | Small Business
Your business is not just a bakery—or just a coffee shop, clothing store, consulting firm or photography studio. It has something special to offer the world. And, to survive in a competitive online marketplace, your business needs to stand out. That’s why determining your niche in ecommerce is so important. It differentiates you from the rest. The first step is figuring out where you fit into a broad marketplace. If you try to be everything to everyone, you’ll fail. But if you try to do something specific really well you can excel.
Once you’ve carved out your niche, it’s time to convey it to the world. An attractive, functional website is a must-have in today’s marketplace. Using the small business website builder from Yahoo Small Business makes it simple to distinguish yourself.
Keep reading to learn more about branding your business online.
Consider Competitor Gaps
First, you need to know how you stack up against the competition.Perform a competitive analysis with these questions in mind:
- Which competitors are currently operating within your desired niche?
- How much are they charging for their products or services?
- What search engine optimization (SEO) strategies are competitors pursuing?
Craft Your Unique Selling Proposition
It’s important to note that not every business within your sector is automatically a competitor. Let’s say you’re setting up a photography website so users can book shoots and buy prints online. The broad umbrella of “photography” contains many specialties: family, sports, wedding, editorial, nature, corporate, music, journalistic and more. It’s very rare to see a professional photographer succeed at doing it all. It’s smarter to become an expert in one or two areas—these specialties can play into your unique selling proposition (USP).At its core, your USP is the reason customers should choose your business over the competition. If you choose an underserved niche, this alone can serve as your USP. For example, you may choose to market yourself as a photographer of unusual pet portraits.
Your USP may also relate to pricing or product characteristics. Here are a few examples:
- Inexpensive products for price-conscious shoppers.
- Luxurious or one-of-a-kind offerings for customers who value exclusivity.
- Eco-friendly products or services for environmentally conscious customers.
- Free or fast shipping/delivery.
- A “buy X, get X free” sales model.
- Lifetime warranty.
Conveying Your Niche Where It Counts
Customers can’t spend all day digging through a website to figure out what you’re all about—or even five minutes! That’s why the look, feel and messaging of your website matters so much. You want to convey what your business offers at a glance.Clearly state your USP on your website’s homepage and “About Us” landing page. Customize your website with high-quality photographs showing exactly what you do or sell. Make sure your website copy conveys your brand voice, while remaining straightforward and informational.
Find your ecommerce niche. Then create an online presence to match it using the small business website builder from Yahoo Small Business. Get started today!

Coach Credentials
Jeff Genyk, one of the nation’s most respected special teams instructors and a former collegiate head coach, enters his first year on the Commodore staff. Genyk will serve as Vanderbilt’s special teams coordinator and running backs coach.
“I’m very pleased to announce the addition of Jeff Genyk to our Vanderbilt staff,” Mason said. “Jeff is recognized as one of the nation’s leading coordinators of special teams and an outstanding offensive coach. He brings a great deal of knowledge and expertise to our staff. Jeff has enjoyed plenty of success coaching special teams and offense, and I look forward to that continuing here in Nashville.”
In 2015, Genyk rekindled a working relationship with Northwestern University, serving as a consultant to Head Coach Pat Fitzgerald on special teams, offense and game management. The Wildcats matched their highest win total in the last decade, going 10-3 and playing in the Outback Bowl.
In 2013-14, Genyk coordinated special teams and worked with tight ends at the University of Wisconsin. During the two years at Wisconsin, he worked with Vanderbilt offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig under Badger Head Coach Gary Andersen.
The Badgers had plenty of successes, including capturing the 2014 Big Ten West title, beating Auburn in the 2014 Outback Bowl and playing in the 2013 Citrus Bowl. Genyk mentored All-Big Ten tight end Jacob Pedersen, recruited and coached Big Ten All-Freshman kicker Rafael Gaglianone, and oversaw significant improvement in virtually every area of special teams.
Before joining Wisconsin, Genyk held similar positions at University of California under Head Coach Jeff Tedford.
While in Berkeley, Genyk led dramatic improvement with the Cal special teams units, including back-to-back first-team All-Pac 12 selections in kicker Giorgio Tavecchio and punter Bryan Anger, who became a Ray Guy semifinalist and a third round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. Anger is now a four-year veteran with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Genyk also coached current Green Bay Packers’ tight end Richard Rodgers at Cal.
Genyk served as the head coach at Eastern Michigan from 2004-08. He coached the Eagles to their best conference finish in seven years in 2004 with a third-place showing in the West Division of the Mid-American Athletic Conference.
While at Eastern Michigan he coached three All-Americans in linebacker Daniel Holtzclaw, defensive end Jason Jones and placekicker Andrew Wellock. Jones was a second-round selection of Tennessee in the 2008 NFL Draft who just completed his eighth professional season. Wellock was a finalist for the 2004 Lou Groza Award given annually to the nation's top placekicker. He also coached offensive tackle T.J. Lang, who was selected by Green Bay in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft and continues as a standout on the Packers’ offensive front.
After his tenure at Eastern Michigan, Genyk spent one season at ESPN, serving as a color analyst for Atlantic Coast Conference games.
From 1994-2003, Genyk worked at Northwestern, with responsibility for the special teams unit during each of his final five campaigns with the Wildcats. He was also the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator for five seasons (1999-2003) after having worked with the safeties in 1998 and the outside linebackers in 1997. During his first five campaigns, he was the school's Director of Football Operations from 1994-96 and a defensive graduate assistant from 1992-93.
Genyk was on the Northwestern football staff for three Big Ten championship teams and four bowl appearances. The 1995, 1996 and 2000 teams all won Big Ten titles. The 1995 squad played in the Rose Bowl, the 1996 team was in the CompUSA Florida Citrus Bowl and the 2000 club played in the Alamo Bowl. The 2003 squad participated in the Motor City Bowl.
At Northwestern, Genyk mentored Fitzgerald as an All-America linebacker and defensive player of the year. He coached several other standouts at Northwestern, including linebacker and eventual first-round NFL pick Napoleon Harris and running back and Heisman Trophy finalist Damien Anderson.
A native of Milan, Mich., Genyk was a quarterback and punter at Bowling Green State (Ohio) University from 1978-81. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Bowling Green in 1982. He later earned a Master’s of Business Administration and Marketing from Western Michigan University in 1989 and a Master’s of Education and Social Policy from Northwestern in 1994.
BPI Sports Presents: Tips for Stepping on Stage and WEIGHT LOSS MYTHS DEBUNKED
[Video below]-Erika Otero, BPI Sports Demo Rep Coordinator and a nationally qualified athlete shares her tips for stepping on stage—from what’s appropriate, what’s not and the number one tip on how to grab the judges’ attention. Erika, an NPC competitor for 10 years, also explains the differences between posing for bikini and posing for figure. Erika says at the national level for the figure division in the NPC, judges are looking for two things--your physique and another quality participants always forget.
WEIGHT LOSS MYTHS DEBUNKED
There are millions of ways to get in shape— and just as many strange and unproven tales about how that can be accomplished. We put together the top weight loss myths and the reasons you can kick them to the curb.
MYTH #1: LOSING WEIGHT IS HEALTHY.
Weight loss is not the quick fix for everyone with high blood pressure, high cholesterol or high blood sugar. Proper nutrition and exercise is. Crash diets and fasting can lead to muscle loss and slow your metabolism. Simply put, not all weight loss is healthy. Your goal should be to lose fat and maintain or build muscle.
MYTH #2: STOP SNACKING TO LOSE WEIGHT.
Stop eating all the time and you will lose weight. Have you heard that before? Truth is it is not accurate. Whether you consume 2000 calories all in one meal or throughout the day, the numbers don’t change. Eating throughout the day, however, can help you to feel satiated and keep you from going off your diet and nutrition program.
MYTH #3: EAT MORE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES.
All you need to do is eat more salads and snack on fruit and you will lose weight. This does not seem too far-fetched. However, eating fruits and veggies doesn’t guarantee weight loss. Don’t just rely on eating fruits and veggies as a cure all. Instead, eat fruits and vegetables instead of snacks high in sugar and fat.
MYTH #4: LOSING WEIGHT IS EXPENSIVE.
Organic foods, non-GMO foods and healthy foods in general cost more. This does not mean it will cost you an arm and a leg to lose weight. If you are of the mind set to lose weight, you can stop spending money on fast food, sugary snacks, midday lattes and just spend your hard-earned money on the good stuff.
MYTH #5: JUST DO CARDIO, DON’T LIFT WEIGHTS.
The reason most beginner workout programs start with walking, jogging or a form of light cardio exercise is that it is easy to start. This doesn’t mean that you should skip the weight room. Also, when you train for strength, you can keep the body’s metabolism going for days after your workout. Additionally, the more muscle you gain, the more calories you will burn.
MYTH #6: THE WEIGHT LOSS UNICORN
We’ve all heard of the magic pill, secret workout routine, special fat-burning drink or some other hocus pocus that will get you in shape in an instant. The real secret that no one wants to reveal is that to lose weight, you will need to work hard, stay focused and make sacrifices.
MYTH #7: I CAN DO IT ALL ON MY OWN.
All you need is to be in the right mind set and you can accomplish anything. This much we know is true because we have heard it over and over from a variety of inspiring people. When it comes to starting a workout routine and changing your diet, there is nothing wrong with asking for help. Cut through some of the beginning struggles of trial and error by asking for advice and guidance. Reach out to your fit friends or your relatives with nutrition degrees and use our site as a resource. You’ll find training programs, nutrition plans and supplement advice, all free to use and created to help you reach your goal.

Dr Myles Munroe - The Responsibility of Freedom and Pastor Dave's Diplomatic Notes
EVALUATING AND SELECTING ELECTED OFFICAILS (POLICITICANS AND CANDIDATES)
Determine what the candidates personal philosophy and beliefs are beyond what his/her party says (their position) on the issues.
Have they (politician and party) delivered on their last promises, if not why?
What is their position on moral, social or spiritual issues and are their positions compatible with yours?
Measure their words or plans against stated objectives and actual accomplishments (make sure and record/document promises for future comparison) Did they live up to their word? If not ask why and take note before allowing them the opportunity to give another word. Are they transparent. Can you get a straight honest answer or do they ask you to trust them while not giving you information you requested.
Do they purposefully withold information. What is their track record in leadership. Have they been decisive and true to their word?
Do their policies make your life better in the short or long term?
Have their current policies negatively impacted you?
What are their convictions and do theirs line up with yours (ask specific questions)?
Ask very specific questions: for example do you believe in (blank and you fill in the blank)
Do they know how to prioritize (place most important items as the focus of their agenda)
Have they outlined a vision with specific plans that they can be judged on when in office
Do critics and opposition parties present a viable alterative that is documented and which they can be judged by and evaluated upon (every potential leader should a written vision).
DIPLOMATIC NOTE 1 - CHRISTIANS AND POLITICS
A popular notion has existed for years that Christians should stay far away from politics and leave it up to others to govern the country. It is speculated that this concept arose out the the scriptural admonitions to "Come out from among them and be separate" and to be "In the world but not of it". There are several other scriptures that make reference to a form of separation emphasizing the fact that earth is not the permanent home of believers. We are called "pilgrims" and "sojourners" who are not to get bogged down in earthly affairs. However entrenched this thinking is I believe it is erroneous and perhaps even dangerous.
If we understand what the word politics means i believe it would cause an immediate change in perspective for the average Christian. Let's begin by examining the definition of politics:
Definition of Politics - Politics (from Greek: πολιτικός politikos, definition "of, for, or relating to citizens") is the process of
making uniform decisions applying to all members of a group. It also involves the
use of power by one person to affect the behavior of another person. More narrowly, it refers to achieving and
exercising positions of governance - organized control over a human community, particularly a state. Furthermore, politics is the
study or practice of the distribution of power and resources within a given community (a usually hierarchically organized population) as well as the interrelationship(s) between communities.
Let's focus on the underlined items

Let's focus on the underlined items
Making uniform decisions applying to all members of a group.
Use of power by one person to affect the behavior of another person.
Exercising positions of governance - organized control over a human community, particularly a state.
Study or practice of the distribution of power and resources within a given community.
Use of power by one person to affect the behavior of another person.
Exercising positions of governance - organized control over a human community, particularly a state.
Study or practice of the distribution of power and resources within a given community.
If someone is making decisions that will apply to all members of a group it would make sense to me that the persons affected be involved in the decision making process or at least have input. The second point is that politics causes power to be exercised that will affect the behavior of another person. If the use of power by those in authority can affect our behaviour it seems reasonable for those who would be possibly affected to have a voice, especially if we are talking about a democracy. The third point is "organized control over a human community". If politics can mean the organized control over a human community should that human community not have a voice and input over the policies implemented by those in control. In other words should we be victims or participants. The final point is arguably the most important, the distribution of power and resources. Power and resources are the most critical elements in the survival of any nation. As we look around the world it is clear that there is no shortage or resources but the persistent problem is who controls the resources and how those resources are distributed. Whoever is in power controls distribution so again, righteous and good people who live by Christian principles are best suited to distribute equitably so these persons should be in positions of power to ensure best practices and fairness.
The last time i checked Christians live on the same planet in the same cities and are affected by the same policies as everyone else so it would stand to reason for me that we should have input and involvement in the decision making and governance of the countries we live in. To take it further the Bible states that, "When the righteous are in power the people rejoice". How can we have righteous government if righteous people decide to stay on the sidelines. My conclusion is that Christians should get involved on all level of politics. Once we agree that Christians should be involved in politics the next question is how should we be involved and what is the most effective means of involvement.
In our next edition we will examine the questions:
Should Pastors, Priests and leaders of Churches run for political office?
How would this affect members and would it result in polarization?
How can Christians be most effective in the political arena.
