What matters most in the first years of a startup’s life? “Closing deals,” says Greg Pugh, SVP of Customer Acquisition for Rev1 Ventures, seed-stage venture development organization in Columbus, Ohio.
It’s not enough to have a good product if you don’t have customers who want it. And lack of customer interest is a common problem: More than 40 percent of startups fail due to lack of market for their product, according CB Insights.
The seasoned business leaders at Rev1, named the most active VC firm in Ohio, say the best way for entrepreneurs to close their first customer and start out on a path toward sustainable success is to believe that in a startup, everyone, including the founder, sells. Says Pugh, “By building selling into the culture of the company from the start, closing the first customer will be easier, and closing the next customer will be second nature.”
Rev1’s leaders should know. They have helped make Ohio a growing hub of startup activity. In 2015 alone, the firm claims its portfolio generated $162 million in revenue, created nearly 300 new jobs, and attracted nearly $100 million in capital to the region.
“Inking the first deal is one of the most challenging, gratifying and defining experiences for a new company,” says Rev1 president & CEO Tom Walker, who adds that he wishes he had more early insight into the best ways to approach first customers.
Here’s how he and the leaders of the Rev1 team recommend closing your first customer and beyond:
1. Do your homework. "Never take any meeting with a potential customer for granted,” Walker says. “When you’re working on your company’s first sales, you may spend a week studying the customer and the competition just to prepare for a 30-minute call. Over time, your customer and industry knowledge will build. But problem solving and preparation? Those will always be the keys to successful sales.”
2. Identify early adopters. The visionaries and technology enthusiasts are the customers who take a risk when no one else will, Pugh says. “They help you make your product what it needs to be. They give you credibility, and often times, they become your friends.” He adds: “Be bold and ask obligating questions of your prospects in order to understand their intentions and your opportunity for working with them and growing with them.”
3. Understand your customer’s business. That’s when you can really sell to them, recommends Rev1 EVP of Investments & Venture Acceleration Wayne Embree. “They will trust you because you demonstrate that you actually recognize that their business is more than the problem that you are trying to solve. When you put it in terms of how your product makes their relationship to their customers better, that will secure them to you as a customer.”
4. Look for prospects with a track record for doing business with early-stage companies. That’s the advice of Ohio TechAngel Funds Managing Director Parker MacDonell. “Ask someone who knows you personally to introduce you to someone she or he knows personally at the prospect company,” he says. “That removes some of the uncertainty the prospect might feel at doing business with a young company led by an entrepreneur whom they’ve never met.”
5. Provide abundant value. When you do, your very happy first customer will help you land your second and third customer, says Rev1 Chief Marketing Officer Kristy Campbell. “It’s critical your product or service can provide the value required to ensure they come away from the process as an active advocate for your work.”
10 Ways To Frugally Save Money For College Tuition
By: Jeremy Smith
Saving money for college is getting more and more difficult as the prices of college tuition get higher and higher. While some students are given a free ride with an academic or athletic scholarship, others rely on their parents or grandparents to pay for college. For the rest, it is becoming a common occurrence for students to live at home with their parents for the first year while living frugally and trying to save up for the following semesters. While these students may save a lot of money, it is still possible to get private alternative loans to help cover the expense. Here are 10 ways to frugally save money for school and help to pay for room and board, books and tuition. 1. Save change in a bucket at the end of each day. Never take it out to spend. Roll the coins periodically with free wrappers from the bank. Do not use a coin conversion machine. It removes a small percentage. Every coin counts. 2. Enroll in a 529 tax deferment plan. The student may be able to shop at certain stores and use their coupons to save money. A percentage of the money will go into a college savings account. 3. Pick up a part-time job. Any earnings will be directly deposited into a special bank account used only for school. If the student already has one, this could be a second income set aside only for higher learning.
4. Spend less money on fun activities. Rather than going out bowling or to a movie, go to a free concert at the local park or go for a bike ride. Rather than going out with friends, invite them over instead. 5. Use coupons. Clip or download coupons on food, auto repair and restaurants. Do not spend more money to save more, simply spend less. 6. Remove a set amount of money from each paycheck. Have it direct-deposited into a special account. Some financial institutions offer college savings accounts. 7. Request money for college for birthdays and holiday gifts. 8. Hold a zero balance on all credit cards at the end of every month. Interest is not usually charged when the balance is paid in full. 9. Brew coffee at home. Buy a pound of coffee and package of coffee filters for the same price as two or three gourmet coffee shop lattes. 10. Refrain from eating meals out. Pack a bag lunch when possible and do not buy extras when eating in a restaurant.

On November 11, 2017 at approximately 7:11 a.m., Marion County Sheriff's Office deputies observed a tan 2005 Hyundai passenger vehicle, which was reported stolen out of Putnam County, pull into the parking lot of the Queens Garden Resort, located at 3340 South Pine Avenue in Ocala. The driver of the stolen vehicle, Robert Wade Hardister (DOB: 09/17/1991), immediately parked the car and fled on foot when he saw deputies. Several units responded and established a perimeter. K9 Deputy Matthew Hooper and K9 Rambo tracked the suspect to the 500th block of SE 35 Place, where Hardister surrendered to deputies without incident. Later on at the Marion County Jail, MCSO detention deputies observed Hardister attempt to conceal Marijuana on his person while he was being booked. Hardister was also served with a Marion County Warrant for Grand Theft Auto as well.
3 Reasons Why You Would Want a K9 Unit
By: Ray Zamfir
K9 units or dog units are glorified in movies. If you have watched any action movie or series recently where a dangerous and vicious criminal is the on the run from the police, you may have spotted a K9 unit on the chase. As spectacular and intriguing as those chases are, that is not all there is to dog units. You don’t really have to be in the middle of a chase between the police and a fugitive to see dog units in action. In fact, you can have a dog unit at your service if you are struggling to protect the perimeters of your home or workplace.
A lot of people will come up to you and tell you that using dogs to secure your boundaries is too elaborate and old fashioned. This is because people are gradually turning their attention away from man’s best friend and placing their trust in technology. There is no denying the fact that technology has a huge role to play in the private security industry today and in the future. However, you cannot possibly forget how useful guard dogs and their handlers are. The presence of a dog unit can make a world of a difference when it comes to safeguarding your life and assets from criminal attacks. It is okay for you to doubt the effectiveness and legitimacy of a dog unit. A lot of people are not familiar with the concept of using dogs to ward off criminal threats. Then again, there are those who are concerned about safety issues associated with a dog unit. "What if the handler loses control and the dog breaks free?" is one of the many questions that make people overlook perks of hiring a dog unit. If you are in the same boat, then here are pieces of information about dog units that will change your mind. 1) Dog Units are Exceptionally Well Trained "Safety comes first" is the motto of every exemplary dog unit. Unlike a lot of so called modern security systems, K9 units will not compromise your security under any circumstances. The people who are appointed as dog handlers are not ordinary men and women who simply have an affinity for dogs. Believe it or not, dog handlers are actually recruited from law enforcement agencies and from the military. State of the art private security companies look to hire former police or army officers who have had years of training and experience handling guard dogs. This is not a job that can be left to the hands of an amateur. Handling guard dogs is an extremely difficult task that requires a great degree of skill. It is not only the dog handlers who are trained. The guard dog themselves undergo rigorous training regimes as well. While the dog handlers are trained to exercise unwavering control over the guard dogs, the canines are trained to be obedient and faithful to their handlers at all times. This incredibly high level of training allows the man and the animal to develop the chemistry required to form a formidable security team. If you do not believe it, then simply talk to a dog handler (provided that you are not scared of the dog he or she is toting around). They will tell you all about the unbelievable amount of work that they and their dogs have put in to deter crime.
2) Dog Units Prevent Crimes from a Mile Away You may have heard security personnel talk about how they can scare away criminals from a mile away. In the case of a dog unit, this is literally true. Statistics suggest that criminals, even the most violent released inmates, are fearful of guard dogs. In other words, if you were a burglar or a robber who was trying to break in to a store, house or an office, then you would most probably change your mind upon seeing a dog unit from a mile away. The dogs in K9 units are specifically trained to be very hostile to criminals. Since they are completely obedient to their dog handlers, they will not pose any threat to you or people around you. These dogs have a particular taste for criminals. With the assistance of their dog handlers, these guard dogs are able to spot criminals and track them down even before the crime is committed. There is no better crime deterrent than a dog unit. If you buy a security system, it can only make you aware of the presence of a criminal. It cannot literally chase away a criminal now, can’t it? But a guard dog is born to strike fear in the hearts of criminals, so that they do not even think about robbing or vandalizing your house. 3) Dog Units Are Cost Effective If you want static guards to offer you the same level of protection that a dog unit does, then you would need to hire at least five to six different static guards. Hiring that many static guards would drain a lot of money out of your pockets, something that you surely do not want to see happen under the current economic circumstances. Even if you hire six guards, they would not be able to frighten away criminals and deter crime like a dog unit would. Dog units are thus the smarter choice, because they are evidently more cost effective. With a dog unit, you are paying an affordable price for state of the art security. The combination of a single dog handler with a single guard dog is a strong enough security team to let you reside in your home or work in your office without the fear of being attacked by deadly criminals. When we make mistakes, God doesn’t abandon us. Psalm 37:23-24 tells us, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord… Though he falls, he will not be destroyed; for the Lord will be there to pick him up.”
No mistake you make can ever be too great to cancel out God’s plan for your life. Let Joel show you that it’s time to believe again in this redeeming message. No matter what you’ve done, if you will shake off guilt and move forward in your thinking and expectations, God will get you to where you’re supposed to be. Not somewhere secondary, but the best plan for your life.
