This is a video of a journalist from Asian Image undertaking a fitness
bleep test induction at the Lancashire Police headquarters in Hutton,
Lancashire as part of the force's police officer recruitment campaign in
January 2018.
Anyone must have tried playing
cops-and-robbers in their childhood, a game that certainly requires so
much chasing and even tackling. The main goal of the game is to catch
the kid playing the role of the robber or any other criminal. That is
all child’s play, of course. However, they do have similarities with
the real thing. Although sometimes this no longer happens, expectations
on the police being able to chase and immobilize a suspect and have him
prosecuted in court are still high. Hence, people also expect them to
be physically fit so they could perform their tasks. Unfortunately,
there are quite a number of active duty cops in cities who are obese
and unable to run several yards enough to overtake a suspect from the
scene of the crime. In most cases, the cop roles played by the stars on
TV are only ones that always have the fit physique. In fact, donut
shop fat cops images are fast becoming stereotypes instead of those with
the regular or athletic build. These cops with huge waistlines
certainly do get the approval of the public as much as their leaner
counterparts do. Police work requires much preparedness in the
physical department. This means that a police officer must have the
physical fitness level that would enable him to do his strenuous job
effectively aside from the mentally draining investigative work. When
all evidences point to a single suspect, the next thing that could
happen is probably a long chase, which could even become violent
confrontation prompting an officer to use his physical abilities. Even
before one becomes a full-pledged officer, he undergoes a lot of
physical fitness training in the academy. The aim, of course, is to
have him prepared for a physically demanding job ahead of him. He
develops his muscle and strength by lifting weights and to run miles for
speed and staying power, both vital element in apprehending a suspect
successfully. Besides, the strength and flexibility they acquire are
important once they take courses in the martial arts and other similar
activities.
Maintaining physical fitness, however, becomes more
difficult when an officer is already in active duty. After the police
academy, many officers can hardly find time to go to the gym for regular
workouts. Yet, they do know how important physical fitness is to their
bodies as well as to their mental and emotional state. They do believe
that a fit body also positively affects one’s total well-being. When
a police force has men and women who are conscious in maintaining fit
figures, the public trust can also rise much higher. The absence of
overweight members in the corps certainly tells of its discipline and
integrity. Hence, police commanders should always make it a point to
encourage their men to spend time for workouts. The fit physique that
they will get and maintain will also give them honor just as their
badges did with them.

BOWIE, Md.
– The Bowie State University Bulldogs started a bit slow but turned it
up in the second half and saddled the Broncos of Fayetteville State
79-59 in a
conference clash on Monday evening in the A.C. Jordan Arena. With the victory, Bowie State moves its overall record to 7-9 and 2-3 in the conference.
Bulldogs sophomore
Cameron Hayes (Upper Marlboro, Md.) paced Bowie State with 17 points on
5-of-10 shooting from the floor while senior Omari George (Baltimore,
Md.) and freshman Keith Duffin, Jr. (Fort Meade,
Md.) tallied 13 and 11 points respectively in the victory. Sophomore
Saiquan Jamison (Upper Marlboro, Md.) just missed his sixth
double-double, scoring nine points and pulled down a game-high 17
rebounds to go along with two assists, two steals and three blocks.
Redshirt sophomore
David Belle (Hyattsville, Md.) finished the night with nine points to go
along with four rebounds while senior Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.)
and freshman Justin Route (Washington, D.C.)
tallied six points apiece.
As a team, Bowie
State hauled down 57 rebounds (23 offense and 34 defense), accounted for
27 second chance points and scored the opponents bench 39-19.
The first 20 minutes
of action featured five ties and eight lead changes. Fayetteville
State’s Broncos held their largest lead of five (21-16) at the 7:36
mark of the first half. However, Bowie State put together
a 12-3 run over the next two minutes to shift the advantage over to the
Bulldogs at 28-24. Bowie State used that momentum to take a 35-29 lead
into halftime.
Bowie State’s lead quickly grew to double-digits and ballooned to a game-high 22 points (64-42) by the 8:36 mark of the second half. The Bulldogs defense was stellar over a five minute period in the second
half, holding the Broncos to only one field goal over a five minute stretch.
To make matters
worse for Fayetteville State, the Broncos head coach (Ken Spencer) was
assessed a double technical foul and ejected with 42.2 seconds remaining
in the contest.
Joshua Bryant and
Willie Gilmore, both of Fayetteville, N.C., led the Broncos in scoring
with 18 and 15 points respectively on a combined 10-of-21 shooting from
the field for Fayetteville State (4-11 / 1-4
CIAA). Bryant also led FSU with seven rebounds. Xavier Williams
(Fayetteville, N.C.) was responsible for nine points and Denzell Hosch
(Shelby, N.C.) chipped in eight points.
The Bulldogs hit the road for mid-week tilt at Livingstone College on Wednesday (January 10th) to close out the (CIAA) Southern Division portion of its schedule. Game time in the Blue Bears’ New Trent Gymnasium
is set for 7:30 p.m.
BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State Bulldogs women’s basketball team dominated from beginning to the end on Monday night, routing Fayetteville State by a final count of
71-52. With the win, the Bulldogs improved its season mark to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in the CIAA.
Senior Kiara Colston
(Burtonsville, Md.) paced three Bowie State double figure scorers with a
game 16 points. Senior Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) added 11
points and sophomore Amel Duggins (Largo, Md.)
came off the bench to record a career-high 11 points. Bulldogs
sophomore Kyaja Williams (Baltimore, Md.) fell just shy of a
double-double, contributing nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Graduate student
Sade Chatman (Minneapolis, Minn.) contributed eight points while senior
Ty-Nita Baker (Houston, Miss.) and redshirt junior Pere Alexander
(Baltimore, Md.) chipped in five points each for Bowie
State. Freshman Talanya Hutton (Seat Pleasant, Md.) and sophomore
Dynaisha Christian (Pocomoke, Md.) came off the Bulldogs bench to add
four and two points respectively.
The Bulldogs jumped
out to a comfortable 30-5 first quarter advantage over the Broncos and
carried a 40-21 into intermission. Bowie State’s defense held
Fayetteville State to 25 percent shooting from the field
over the first 20 minutes as the Broncos managed to make just 8-of-32
field goals.
Bowie State kept the
pressure on in the third and fourth quarters as well and never allowed
Fayetteville State (4-9 / 0-5 CIAA) any closer than 15 points. The
Broncos did outscore the Bulldogs in the third
quarter, just as FSU did in the second quarter. However, Bowie State’s
defense continued to put the clamps on Fayetteville State and
substituted freely most of the second half.
Neither team shot
the ball particularly well the entire contest. Fayetteville State ended
the night just under 30 percent (29.4) in field goal shooting (20-of-68)
while Bowie State was slightly over 30 percent
(33.3) from the field (23-of-69). Free throws (23-of-28) were a big
plus for the Bulldogs (82.1 percent) compared to 10-of-17 (58.8 percent)
for the visitors.
Bowie State held
advantages in rebounds (54-46), which was a season-high, points off
turnovers (19-4), second chance points (16-8) and bench points (34-23).
Yakima Clifton
(Durham, N.C.) was the only Broncos player to reach double figure
scoring with 10 points and added seven rebounds, a pair of assists, one
steal and she was responsible for four of Fayetteville
State’s six blocked shots.
The Bulldogs make a long road trip to Salisbury, N.C. on Wednesday (January 10th) to face the Blue Bears of Livingstone College at 5:30 p.m. in the New Trent Gymnasium.
