UDC Men’s Basketball Falls at Roberts Wesleyan, 78-60

Junior guard Erin Senegal led the Firebirds with 13 points.
ROCHESTER, NY – A red-hot start by the Redhawks led to a 27-6 Roberts Wesleyan advantage a little over 10 minutes into the game, and the Firebirds could never work their way back as they suffered a 78-60 loss to Roberts Wesleyan in East Coast Conference play Sunday afternoon at the Voller Athletic Center.
Junior transfer guard Erin Senegal (Political Science – Lafayette, LA/Caldwell) led three Firebird scorers in double-figures with 13 points in just 16 minutes of action off of the bench. Starting point guard Quasim Jones (Media Arts – Philadelphia, PA/Johnson CC) added 11 points and a team-best three assists, and his starting backcourt mate Michael Terry (Criminal Justice – Philadelphia, PA/Boston U) contributed 10 points and six rebounds.
The Firebirds shot a cold, 33-percent (18-of-54) from the field, including just 5-of-20 (25-percent) from three-point range. They were also out-rebounded by RWC, 47-35.
The Redhawks, who had lost five of their previous six games, improved to 9-10 overall and 5-8 in league play with today's win. They were led by forwards Isaac Medeiros (25 points, seven rebounds) and Tyrel Dixon (15 points, six rebounds, five assists).
Roberts Wesleyan out-scored UDC in the paint, 32-6 during the first half (52-20 for the game) thanks to a 22-12 rebounding advantage, and the Redhawks out-shot UDC, 51-percent to 30-percent from the field en-route to a commanding 44-25 halftime advantage.
The Redhawks wasted no time putting the game out of reach as they opened the second half on a 13-4 run to take their largest lead of the game, 57-29 at the 16:15 mark. From there, they would cruise to an 18-point victory, 78-60.

Firebirds Outlast Soaring Redhawks in ECC Battle; Claim 1st Place in ECC with 8th Straight Win

Senior guard Telisha Turner had 10 points, including a clutch three-pointer with under a minute remaining in regulation.
ROCHESTER, NY – No more than six points ever separated these two, top-tier East Coast Conference foes as the Firebirds and Redhawks collided for eight ties and nine lead changes before the University of the District of Columbia pulled away late to earn a 68-62 road victory over Roberts Wesleyan Sunday afternoon at Voller Athletic Center.
This marks the 8th straight victory by the Firebirds – tying the program's longest win streak since the 2011-12 season. Also, UDC (19-3, 12-2 ECC) claimed sole possession of 1st place in the ECC standings with Queens falling to Mercy on Saturday afternoon. The Redhawks, who had won nine of their last 10 games, including their last four, fell to 14-5 overall and 9-4 in league play.
The ninth and final lead change occurred at the 7:42 mark of the second half when senior guardTelisha Turner (Criminal Justice – Wilmington, DE/Harcum) put the Firebirds ahead for good (50-49) with a jumper that kick-started a 7-0 run and propelled UDC to a six-point lead, 55-49 with 6:15 still to play.
Later, Roberts Wesleyan's Marissa Sell converted a layup to cap a 5-0 Redhawks surge that brought the hosts within one, 61-60 at the 1:30 mark. Again, Turner knocked down a clutch shot – this time from three-point range with under a minute remaining – and after an offensive rebound allowed UDC to possess the ball for almost 40 seconds. Guards Shantrel Oliver (Criminal Justice – Columbia, MD/Chesapeake College) and Tajruba Baldwin-Kollore each sank a pair of free-throws to ensure the victory.
UDC senior forward Denikka Brent tied for the game scoring high with 21 points while also registering 10 rebounds, two blocked shots, two steals and two assists. Baldwin-Kollore finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and three steals, and Turner added 10 points off of the bench.
Sell and her frontcourt mate Samantha Courtney headlined the Redhawks' attack as Sell finished with a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds while Courtney registered 21 points and nine rebounds.
The Firebirds' defense held RWC to 33-percent shooting (18-of-54) and 25-percent (3-of-12) from three-point range while they shot a bit better from the field (43-percent) and much better from long range (44-percent). Rebounding, assists and turnovers were all virtually even, but the Redhawks managed to keep the game close with far superior free-throw shooting. Roberts Wesleyan made 23-of-26 at the free-throw line (89-percent) while UDC made just 10-of-17 (59-percent).
UDC returns to the nation's capital having won five straight games on the road, as the Firebirds will host Queens in a marquee ECC showdown Wednesday night at 5 p.m. The game will be part of a celebration of National Girls & Women in Sports Day and feature a halftime ceremony to commemorate and honor the historic 1975 game between Federal City College and the Chinese Women's National Team.

Bowie State Sweeps Season Series with 66-61 Road Win at Lincoln

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Bowie State Bulldogs held off a furious charge by the Lincoln University and earned a 66-61 CIAA division win against the Lions on Saturday afternoon in the Manuel Rivero Hall. With the win, the Bulldogs improve their season mark to 18-6 overall, 10-2 in conference play and 5-1 in the division.

Senior Cameron Knox (Baltimore, Md.) scored a game-high 17 points while junior Justin Beck (Ellicott City, Md.) and senior Zafir Williams (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in 15 and 11 points respectively for Bowie State’s Bulldogs. Beck was BSU’s top rebounder with nine.

“We played great defense, did a good job rebounding and made stops when we needed to,” said Bulldogs head coach Darrell Brooks. At the end of the first half and at the first eight minutes of the second half, I felt we played with a good pace … In spite of losing a (16 point) lead in the second half, it was a tough win and we’ll take it!”

After trailing by nine points in the first half, Bowie State senior Cameron Knox (Baltimore, Md.) stole the ball at mid-court and tied the game at 28-all at the 1:43 mark. Freshman Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game (30-28) following a pair of free throws with 51.3 seconds to go.

Knox drained a deep 3-pointer with 7.9 seconds left in the half to send Bowie State into halftime with a 33-29 advantage. Bowie State made 12-of-34 (35.3 percent) first half field goals and 6-of-9 free throws (66.7 percent).

The Lions cut the Bulldogs lead down to eight (61-53) at the 5:50 mark of the second half, the closest Lincoln had been since 52-41 following a steal and dunk by Joshua Davis.

A Zafir Williams jumper pushed the Bowie State lead back to double-digits but a three-point play by Davis trimmed the Bulldogs lead to 63-56 with 4:27 remaining in the contest.

After the Lions forced the Bulldogs to take a bad shot with the shot clock running down, Davis’ dunk closed the gap to 63-58. Lincoln closed the game with a 12-5 run over the final 7:02.

Ancient plant resin could save 1.5 million lives a year

Could an Ancient Plant Resin
Save 1.5 Million Lives a Year?

Ancient Egyptians attributed almost mystical powers to this resin… and it’s been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years. That was enough to make it valuable cargo along ancient trade routes.
Before indoor plumbing enabled people to bathe frequently, they used the sweet smoke of this resin to make themselves smell better. Egyptian women mixed it into their eye shadow.
But there was more to it than a nice smell. It had medicinal uses in the ancient world. Now science is gaining a new appreciation for the things the ancients figured out by observation or trial and error. And they’ve found this is a powerful pain and cancer remedy.
Here’s the story. . .
