Bowie State Women’s Tennis Take Down University of Maryland Eastern Shore 8-1

SALISBURY, Md.  – The Bowie State University women’s tennis team picked up a non-conference victory on Wednesday (4/6) afternoon, downing the University of Maryland Eastern Shore by a final score of 8-1. The win improves the Lady Bulldogs season mark to 5-3 overall while UMES dips to 0-7 on the season.

In doubles competition, senior Amber Peters (Lanham, Md.) and sophomore Dainese Smothers (Washington, D.C.) dropped a tough 8-6 decision at No. 1. Bowie State bounced back at No. 2 doubles, as freshman Sharaya Dunwell (Silver Spring, Md.) along with senior Antonique Johnson (Laurel, Md.) cruised to an 8-2 decision. The Lady Bulldogs combo of senior Rahwa Habtemariam (Lanham, Md.) and freshman Madeleine Ndema (Lanham, Md.) shutout the opposing by a score of 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.


Bowie State’s Peters defeated UMES’ Melequa King 8-4 at No. 1 singles and Smothers blanked Alese Brown 8-0 at No. 2. BSU’s Dunwell knocked off DaTonya Price 8-1 at No. 3 singles.  Johnson and Ndema claimed identical 8-0 victories at No. 4 and 5 singles and sophomore Selena Slaughter (Hyattsville, Md.) won her No. 6 singles match over Tearraney Peak by a score of 8-3.

The Lady Bulldogs return to the court on Saturday (4/9), hosting Virginia State at 12 p.m.

Goldey-Beacom Women’s Tennis Cruises to 9-0 Victory at Bowie State


BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State women’s tennis dropped their final regular season match of the season, falling 9-0 to Goldey-Beacom College. The Lady Bulldogs will take a 6-9 record into this week’s (4/17-19) CIAA Spring Championships.

If was a rough afternoon for the home team as Goldey-Beacom’s Rocio Moreno (Sevilla, Spain) and Nina Sengl (Puchheim, Germany) topped Bowie State’s Amber Peters (Lanham, Md.) and Antonique Johnson (Laurel, Md.) at No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-1. BSU’s Iyabode Sodipo (Baltimore, Md.) and Channae Manning (Lanham, Md.) were shutout 8-0 at No. 2 doubles by Stephanie Robinson (Bogota, Columbia) and Maria Martinez (Santiago, Spain). The Lady Bulldogs’ No. 3 doubles tandem of Brianna Burke (Boston, Mass.) and Rahwa Habtemariam (Lanham, Md.) lost 8-0 to Gabriela Chaves (Joao Pessoa, Brazil) and Filipa Correia (Lisboa, Portugal) of the Lightning.

Goldey-Beacom’s Moreno defeated Bowie State’s Peters 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles play. BSU’s Sodipo was beaten 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles by Robinson and GBC’s Martinez defeated BSU’s Johnson 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Manning fell to Correia 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles while Burke and Habtemariam came up short by scores of 6-1 and 6-0 respectively at No. 5 and 6 singles.

Virginia Union Women’s Tennis Defeats Bowie State 6-3 in Conference Regular Season Finale


BOWIE, Md. – Virginia Union women’s tennis avenged an earlier season loss to Bowie State and handed the Lady Bulldogs a 6-3 setback on Sunday afternoon. The loss sets Bowie State’s overall mark at 6-8, 5-8 in the conference play and 3-5 in the CIAA North.

Bowie State won by default at No. 3 doubles, but Virginia Union claimed victory at No. 1 and 2 doubles play. VUU’s Kara Miller (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Ellie Parsons (Custer, S.D.) defeated BSU sophomores Amber Peters (Lanham, Md.) and Antonique Johnson (Lanham, Md.) 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Bowie State senior Iyabode Sodipo (Baltimore, Md.) and junior Channae Manning (Lanham, Md.) dropped an 8-4 decision at No. 2 doubles to Katrina Joe (Newport News, Va.) and Deja Shabazz (Richmond, Va.).

Virginia Union’s (3-10, 3-7 CIAA, 2-4 North) only loss in singles completion was a default to Bowie State at No. 6 singles. BSU’s Peters lost 6-2, 2-6 and 8-10 in the tiebreaker at No. 1 singles and VUU’s Parsons beat Sodipo 6-2 and 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

Bowie State’s Johnson battled hard at No. 3 singles before falling short to VUU’s Joe by a score of 2-6, 6-3 and 6-10 in the tiebreaker.  Shabazz of Virginia Union captured a 6-1, 6-2 singles win over Manning at No. 4 and but BSU’s Burke was blanked 6-0 and 6-0 by VUU’s Christionne Taylor (Washington, D.C.) at No. 5 singles.

The Lady Bulldogs closeout their regular season on Monday (4/14) hosting Goldey-Beacom College at 1 pm in a non-conference contest.

Shaw Women’s Tennis Captures 6-3 Neutral Site Victory over Bowie State


ETTRICK, Va. - The Bowie State University women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 decision to Shaw University on Saturday afternoon.  The Lady Bulldogs season mark goes to 6-7 overall and 5-7 in the conference.

Shaw’s Lady Bears (14-3 / 10-2 CIAA) claimed victory at No. 1 and 3 doubles, beating Bowie State 8-1 and 8-0 respectively. The Bowie State combo of senior Iyabode Sodipo (Baltimore, Md.) and junior Channae Manning (Lanham, Md.) rolled to an 8-1 win over Shaw’s Hailli Hanna-Cooke and Omolola Balogun.

Bowie State senior Brianna Burke (Boston, Mass.) knocked off Hanna-Cooke by a score of 8-2 at No. 5 singles play. However, the Lady Bears swept the Lady Bulldogs 8-0 at No. 1, 2, 3 and 6 singles. Shaw was also victorious at No. 4 singles as Menel Ben-Cheikh edged BSU’s Manning by a score of 8-6.

BSU will host Virginia Union on Sunday (4/13) and close out the regular season hosting Goldey-Beacom College on Monday (4/14) at 1 pm

Softball Seniors Close Out Career with 5-0 and 9-7 Home Wins Over Shaw


BOWIE, Md. – Bowie State University ended their 2014 season with a two-game sweep of conference foe Shaw University, beating the Lady Bears 5-0 and 9-7. The Lady Bulldogs finish the year with an overall record of 9-25 and 7-9 mark in the conference.
Junior Cassandra Clayborne (Damascus, Md.) paced the Lady Bulldogs with five hits over two games with senior Adria Lewis (Cumberland, Md.) adding four hits to the stat sheet. Lewis also led Bowie State with three RBI and three runs scored.

Shaw (4-24, 3-12 CIAA) was led by Shanice Anderson (Oceanside, Calif.) with five hits and four other Lady Bears recorded two hits each. Daniela Archibold (Bogota D.C. Columbia) took the loss in game one and Anderson took the loss in the circle in game two.

In the first game, the Lady Bulldogs scored three in the first inning and were never threatened. Senior Mariela Hernandez (Del Rio, Texas) allowed just three hits and struck out seven over seven innings in the circle.

Clayborne hit a leadoff triple to right center and freshman Hailey Bethke (Havre de Grace, Md.) followed with a single to right, scoring Clayborne. Freshman Stefanie Ray (Damascus, Md.) stepped up and laced a single to left field, advancing Bethke to second with no outs. Lewis stroked a 2-RBI shot down the left field line, scoring Ray and Bethke and created a 3-0 Lady Bulldogs lead.

A Hernandez double in the 3rd inning pushed Lewis across the dish for a 4-0 Bowie State advantage. Lewis reached after her second double of the afternoon.

The Lady Bulldogs added their final run of game one in the bottom of the 6th inning following a Bethke single that scored senior Kiara Washington (Bowie, Md.).

Clayborne was responsible for four of Bowie State’s 11 hits in the opening game while Bethke and Lewis adding a pair of hits each.

The Shaw Lady Bears made game two very interesting taking a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the second inning. With the scored tied 1-1 after one, Shaw capitalized on several Bowie State fielding miscues and scored four runs on five hits.

Bowie State was able to get one run back in the bottom of the second only to have the Lady Bears tack two runs on in the top of the 3rdinning to take a 7-2 lead.

However, the Lady Bulldogs maintained their composure and rallied to score five suns in the bottom of the 33rd inning on just three hits to knot the score at 7-all.

Ray came in the game in relief for Hernandez with two outs in the bottom of the 3rd inning, struck out three of the four Shaw batters in the top of the 4th inning to keep the Lady Bears off the scoreboard.

Bowie State’s Lewis began the 4th inning with a double (third of the game) to left. Junior Erica Atkins (Burtonsville, Md.) singled up the middle advancing Lewis to third. Atkins stole second and Lewis scored on the throw to give the Lady Bulldogs the lead for good at 8-7.

The Lady Bulldogs added the final run of game two in the bottom of the 5th inning after a Ray sacrifice fly scored Washington. Washington reached on another Lady Bears throwing error.

Ray (2-7) allowed just one hit over 4.1 innings and sent seven Lady Bears back to the dugout via strikeout. Lewis was Bowie State’s top hitter in game two with two and five other Lady Bulldogs tallied one hit. Junior Megan Windsor (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and Clayborne recorded a pair of RBI each in the second game of the twin bill.

Tennis Seniors Sent Out with 9-0 Sweep over Maryland Eastern Shore


BOWIE, Md. – A very shorthanded Maryland Eastern Shore women’s tennis team was no match for Bowie State as the Lady Bulldogs strolled to a 9-0 non-conference shutout over the Division I Lady Hawks on Senior Day. The Bowie State win squares the Lady Bulldogs season record at 6-6 while UMES falls to 0-15 overall.

In doubles action, the sophomore duo of Antonique Johnson (Laurel, Md.) and Amber Peters (Laurel, Md.) topped Jasmine Jennings and Reine Fowajuh 8-2 in the first flight. Seniors Iyabode Sodipo (Baltimore, Md.) and Brianna Burke (Boston, Mass.) edged the UMES combination of Petra Jerabkova and Alex Manoloca 9-8 (7-4 in the tiebreaker) in the number two position. The Lady Hawks defaulted to Bowie State junior Channae Manning (Lanham, Md.) and Rahwa Habtemariam (Lanham, Md.) at number three doubles.

Bowie State’s Sodipo took down Fowajuh at number one singles by scores of 6-3 and 6-2. BSU’s Burke breezed by UMES’ Jennings 6-1 and 6-1. Johnson kept the streak going for the Lady Bulldogs at number three singles, defeating Jerabkova 6-2 and 7-5 and Habtemariam held off a pesky Maolova 6-4 and 8-6 at number four singles. Bowie State won by default at number five and six singles to close out Senior Day.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Saturday (4/12) for a makeup match against Shaw University at 2 pm. This match will be played on the campus of Virginia State University.

The "Competitive Tennis Program" was designed with the serious athlete in mind! This workout includes full body Olympic training along with more advanced plyometric exercises for explosive power. This program requires the use of a fully equipped facility.

Coppin State 7 - Bowie State 2 (WOMEN'S TENNIS FINAL)


BOWIE, Md. – Coppin State University spoiled the final home match for Bowie State women’s tennis, defeating the Lady Bulldogs 7-2 in non-conference action.

Junior Iyabode Sodipo took Coppin State’s Katherine Chiselom to a tie-breaker at No. 1 Singles before coming up short by a score of 2-6, 6-4 and 4-7. Bowie State junior Brianna Burke (Boston, Mass.) and freshman Antonique Johnson (Laurel, Md.) lost at No. 2 and 4 Singles respectively by scores of 0-6 and 2-6. Sophomore Channae Manning was shutout 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 3 Singles by Jennifer Mitchell of Coppin State.  

In doubles play, the Coppin State Lady Eagles took No. 1 Doubles by a score of 8-4 and also won No. 2 Doubles with a 9-8 (7-4 tie-breaker) decision.

The Lady Bulldogs were awarded default wins at No. 6 Singles and Doubles.

Bowie State (6-10) returns to conference action on Friday (April 12) on the road at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. Match time for the Lady Bulldogs and Lady Lions is 2 pm.

CHOWAN DEFEATS LADY BULLDOGS TENNIS 9-0



BOWIE, Md. - The Chowan University women's tennis team improved to 12-11 on the season after a 9-0 win over the Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs on Saturday in a CIAA match-up.

Every Hawk in the line-up picked up a win in doubles and singles competition. Chowan’s Natalya Kamenshchikova and Breanne Johnson teamed up to earn 8-1 doubles win over Bowie State’s Iyabode Sodipo. Jessica De Backre and Straffai Cleveland defeated the BSU duo of Antonique Johnson and Kassandra Bishop 8-1 followed by another Chowan 8-1 victory by Holly Egnor and Brittney Moser over Channae Manning and Diana Mackey of the Lady Bulldogs.

Chowan swept the Lady Bulldogs in singles competition, as Kamenshchikova, Johnson, Egnor, De Backre, Cleveland, and Jennifer Humphrey notched a win for the Hawks.

Bowie State will continue CIAA play on Sunday hosting Elizabeth City State at 10 am.

CHOWAN SWEEPS LADY BULLDOGS TENNIS 9-0 IN SEASON OPENER FOR BOWIE STATE


FRANKLIN, Va. - The Bowie State University women's tennis was swept 9-0 at Chowan University on Saturday in the first official match of the season.

The Hawks shutout the Lady Bulldogs at No. 1 and 3 doubles and defeated BSU 8-2 at No. 2 doubles.  Bowie State junior Iyabode Sodipo and freshman Antonique Johnson fell to Chowan’s Nata Kamenshchikova and Holly Egnor at No. 1 doubles and the BSU duo of Mieke Allen and Diara Mackey were blanked at No. 3 doubles by Breanne Johnson and Brittany Moser. In No. 2 doubles, Bowie State junior Kassandra Bishop and sophomore Channae Manning lost to Jessica De Backre and Straffai Cleveland of the Hawks.

Chowan (6-4) continued their dominance in the singles matches, shutting out Bowie State 8-0 at No. 1, 3, 4 and 6. Bowie State’s Johnson won three games at No. 2 against Chowan’s Johnson. Allen of the Lady Bulldogs dropped an 8-2 decision to Cleveland at No. 5 singles.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Sunday (2/24) at Elizabeth City State University. Bowie State will play their first home match of the season (3/2) against Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. Match time is slated for 1 pm against the Lady Lions.
