District 51: Janet Long: The Importance of our Police Force

With her youngest son and new daughter-in-law both police officers, Janet Long is very clear about the importance of the Police Force throughout Florida’s District 51.  Long has accompanied her son on several police “ride alongs” and has seen first hand that danger, challenges, and bravery every Florida police officer experiences.

This type of compassion and understanding is part of Long’s decision to run for District 51 State Legislator.  “Our community deserves an experienced, honorable, and independent legislator, who will work with both Republicans and Democrats for our best interests.   I have been appointed by the past two Governors, one Democratic and one Republican, to serve on key state boards — including the State Tax Reform Task Force; and I was appointed three different times, by both Republican and Democratic State Treasurers, to serve as the state’s Deputy Insurance Commissioner.  It’s time a fair and reasonable voice be heard.”
More about Janet C. Long:
Janet C. Long and her family have lived in District 51 for more than thirty years.  In fact, one of her first jobs was as a City Administrator.  Janet has served on the Seminole City Council for the past four years.  With three decades of community involvement, Janet is also a caring friend, mother, and wife. With one son on active duty in the Army, another in the National Guard and a Clearwater Police Officer, a daughter who is a nurse, and husband a retired firefighter, Janet and her family certainly know the meaning of commitment, dedication, and public service.

(Update) Janet C. Long is a Democratic politician and educator who serves as a member of the Florida House of Representatives for House District 51. She was a member of the Seminole, Florida City Council from 2002 to 2006. Wikipedia

Court Reporters and Deposition Legal Services

Although most people believe that court reporters spend all their time in a court room, the bulk of their professional activity is much more likely to take place in a conference room at a law firm.  That’s because deposition services, and not in-trial proceedings is the leading reason why court reporters are in such constant demand.

Although most people believe that court reporters spend all their time in a court room, the bulk of their professional activity is much more likely to take place in a conference room at a law firm.  That’s because deposition services, and not in-trial proceedings is the leading reason why court reporters are in such constant demand.
How a Court Reporter aids in a Deposition
·         By providing a written record of testimony.  Every deposition is valuable to the advance of that given court case, and since witnesses cannot be brought in again and again to repeat what they have said, the written record created by the court reporter must speak for them.
·         By preparing a record to be used in court.  If the witness being deposed is unable to appear in court, the transcript created by the court reporter will be used instead.  These documents are also use to corroborate testimony during a trial.  Say for example a witness is brought before the judge.  They make statements that differ from those given during the deposition.  Counsel is able to point out the discrepancies thanks to the written record.
·         To certify any document presented as evidence during a deposition.  Many court reporters are also notaries, meaning they can make any deposition-related documentation official in the eyes of the court.  This may include evidence, statements and even the transcript of the deposition itself.  (NOTE:  Ask you court reporting services beforehand if the court reporter they are sending out is currently a notary public.)

Other Deposition-Related Court Reporting Services

One of the fastest growing legal services is Videography, and it comes into play often with depositions.  More and more attorneys are choosing to videotape their depositions for the record, or use later in court.   Sensing a shift in demand, court reporting services have brought in expert video camera operators to shoot and edit these depositions.

Translation and interpreter services are also offered by many court reporting services and can provide benefits for those who need to depose individuals who may not speak English as their first language (or at all).  The same accuracy and speed is required of bi-lingual court reports as they must not only comprehend the second language being spoken, but create a transcript of it as well.

Millions of depositions take place in the United States each year, and for each one there is likely to be a court reporter present to create a flawless record of what is said.  It is just one of the myriad ways that a court reporter provides the backbone of the legal record.

The Black Community. The Police. The Solution | Seun Babalola | TEDxPSUBehrend

Seun’s talk will be on how to build better relations between the police and the African-American community. This is a hot button issue currently facing the United States that Seun has shown great passion for and he plans on tackling this topic by discussing proven ways to de-escalate police conflicts, telling the stories of those who were killed due to police violence, and giving accounts from his own life. Seun Babalola is a current college junior at Penn State University. Seun has been a large voice in the areas of social justice, civil rights, and equality at his school in numerous capacities. This past year as a sophomore, Seun served on the Student Government Association as a Senator and as the Director of the Diversity Committee which is the largest committee under the Student Government Association. To name just a few accomplishments, Seun and his committee teamed up with some of the largest student organizations on campus to hold forums that helped students engage in healthy discussions on various issues such as the presidential election, differences in the treatment of genders, and being Latino in America just to name a few. Earlier in the year, Seun along with three of his classmates Isaiah Rashaad Chatman, Demetrius Green, and Marquis McBride, co-founded the Men of Excellence program which is a project for young black men to excel and succeed in society through various programs, workshops, and just conversations with one another. Seun hopes to turn this program into a worldwide non-profit in the near future as the success and empowerment of young black men in our society is very important to him.
Very recently, Seun led a water drive for Flint, Michigan in response to their water crisis where he, along with several student leaders collected approximately 4000 bottles of water and hundreds of dollars in donations that he brought down to Flint with the help of his advisors. Seun hopes to continue to be a voice for change in social justice, civil rights, and equality through work in his community and beyond as he has hopes to attain a combined J.D. and Ph.D. in African-American Studies to be a professor and practice civil rights law. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
