US Sports Softball Feat. Top defensive plays from the 2024 Women's College World Series & How to Become a Softball Pitcher

NCAA Women's CWS

How to Become a Softball Pitcher

  • By Brandon Ogle

At the same time, it shouldn’t be confused with the techniques and strategies utilized on the baseball side. It requires a different approach and of course, plenty of practice. In this article, I’ll walk you through some of the basics of fastpitch softball pitching. Whether you’re a coach, parent, or player, these points will help start you on the path to success.

Mechanics

First and foremost, mechanics are critical. This can’t be stressed enough. Without the proper mechanics, you’re not only going to struggle to find success on the field, but there is an increased susceptibility to injuries later on down the road. While mechanics is a broad term and could easily fill an article by itself, I wanted to stress the primary points here.

Stretching - Something as basic as stretching is ignored countlessly by young athletes. The truth is without an appropriate stretching routine, don’t be surprised when you see shoulder injuries pop up later on.

Proper Stance - Stand straight and tall with your shoulders back. The foot on your throwing arm side will be placed in front of the pitching rubber with the glove-side foot behind the rubber. As a side note, keep in mind that a lot of leagues and associations specify how much of the foot can be touching the rubber.

Backswing - A common misconception is that the speed or height of your backswing is truly what’s generating the heat on the pitch. Yes, it might help a little, but the key is to work at a speed where you still feel comfortable and in control. Don’t rush it too much!

Arm Moving Forward - Here’s where you’re going to generate the majority of your speed. As you move towards your push-off foot, make sure you’re utilizing your body weight to transfer over more power.

Obviously, there’s more things involved in terms of the entire pitching process, but I wanted to be sure to highlight these items as they tend to be overlooked.

Proper Release

When you’re arm is moving towards the release point, try your best to keep the wrist back. This will allow you to whip it forward upon release. As you release the ball, keep your arm outstretched. Not completely straight, but no more than a little bend. Lastly, continue to stand tall throughout the process. Any bending of the knees will likely result in a loss of speed on the pitch.

Confidence

As is the case in nearly every other sport, confidence is critical to success. If you’re not confident in basketball, you’re not going to trust your shot. If you struggle with confidence in golf, you’re going to miss easy puts. Starting to get the point? Well, this is no different when it comes to fast-pitch softball, particularly for pitchers. Here’s a few tips to think about, whether you’re coaching up a young pitcher or are one yourself:

Don’t let one bad inning spoil your day. You’re going to have some bad games. No matter how good you are, it just happens. Even one of the greatest softball players of all time, Jennie Finch, had some not-so-great performances on the mound.

Learn from your mistakes. A tip that can be used in all walks of life is yet again a viable strategy for softball. If a pitch isn’t working early on in a game, try using some other options you have in your repertoire. It’ll even possibly keep your opponents a little off-balance later on in the game.

Practice Makes Perfect

It can’t be stressed enough the importance practice plays in pitching. If you want to be a successful softball pitcher, you need to have the entire process down to the point where you can consistently repeat it time and time again. The only way to do this is through continuously practicing. If you’re just starting out, work on throwing 10-15 pitches to the point where they’re all strikes. Then, gradually build up that pitch count. A second technique is to work on spins. Toss the ball in the air to yourself and focus on generating some spin on it. What may seem like a trivial exercise can be definitely beneficially is building the right techniques. In the end, the only way you’ll develop your game is through careful instruction and constant practice!

She coached also served as assistant coach for the Texas State Bobcats in San Marcos, Texas, from 2015-20, after three seasons in a similar role for the St. Edwards Hilltoppers in Austin, Texas.

A native of Houston, Texas, Osterman helped to lead the University of Texas to three Women’s College World Series appearances in 2003, 2005 and 2006. She also became the only softball individual to win USA Softball’s National Player of the Year honors three times after earning the honor each of those seasons.

During her redshirt season of 2004, Osterman trained with the USA National Team as the only collegian and youngest member of the Olympic team that earned a gold medal in Athens. A three-time selection as Big 12 Conference Female Athlete of the Year (2003, 2005 and 2006), she still holds UT career records in victories (136), ERA (0.51), shutouts (85) and no-hitters (20), and she holds the NCAA record for career strikeout ratio per seven innings (14.35). She finished her UT career with a 136-25 overall record and is second all-time in NCAA Division I career strikeouts with 2,265. Osterman was a recipient of the NCAA Today’s Top VIII Award in 2006, an honor presented to the top eight senior student-athletes in the country.

Osterman pitched for the USA National Team from 2001 to 2021, appearing in the 2004, 2008, and 2020 Olympics. She struck out 1030 batters in just 519.0 innings of work.

Osterman completed her eighth and final season in the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) League in 2015. She played for the Rockford Thunder in 2007 and 2009 and the USSSA Pride for six seasons. Osterman led the Thunder to the league championship in 2009, earning MVP of the championship series. The very next season, she led the Pride to the 2010 championship. The team split the championship in 2012 but captured the title once again in 2013 and 2014.

Osterman was named to the All-NPF team six times and was named Diamond NPF Co-Pitcher of the Year in 2011 and NPF Pitcher of the Year in 2013 and 2014. In the final season of her professional career, Osterman went 15-4 for the Pride, the NPF’s regular season champions, with a 1.21 ERA and 183 strikeouts in 121.2 innings of work. In eight seasons in the NPF, Osterman captured four league titles.

On February 18, 2013, Osterman was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame alongside New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees, former Dallas Cowboys RB Walt Garrison, former NBA Champion Shaquille O’Neal, and former Heisman Trophy winner from UT Ricky Williams.

Osterman added a second hall of fame to her resume in 2016 as she was enshrined in the World of Little League® Hall of Excellence, the highest honor Little League can bestow. She is the fourth female to be enshrined in the Little League Hall of Excellence, and the first to be recognized for a career in the sport of softball.

Osterman graduated from the University of Texas with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 2007 and the University of Missouri with a master’s degree in educational and counseling psychology with a concentration in positive coaching in 2015. This Bison Update Presented by NHL Shop! A Look Back at Howard Softball Under Coach Tyson Year One

WASHINGTON (July 11, 2019) – With last season in the rearview and the 2020 year on the horizon, let’s look back to the Howard University Softball 2019 campaign as they made huge strides under first-year head coach Tori Tyson.

“I am so proud of everything we were able to accomplish, especially with the limitations,” said Tyson. “We could have used [those limitations] as excuses, [but] the only thing I asked when we started practices and games was to compete. This group raised the bar and helped set a standard that all winning cultures need. I am excited about the future of Howard Softball.”

SEASON AT A GLANCE

In only her first season, Coach Tyson revitalized the program with several victories throughout the year. HU reached the postseason for the first time since 2015 while grabbing their first tourney win in eight seasons (2011). Additionally, the Bison's 19 victories are the most since 2012.

In league play, Howard finished over .500 for the first time since 2010 while picking up series victories over Delaware State (first time since 2010) and Norfolk State (first time since 2012). HU grabbed a win against Morgan State for the first time since 2015.

HIRING OF COACH TYSON

On Nov. 1, Howard University Director of Athletics Kery Davis announced the hiring of Tori Tyson as the new head coach of the softball program.

Tyson came to Howard from the University of Maryland, College Park where she assisted in leading the Terps to their first Big 10 appearance since 2015.

Before joining Maryland, she led Cal State Fullerton to two straight NCAA Regional appearances and two Big West Conference Championships. During her tenure, two pitchers went on to win Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year and Big West Pitcher of the Year.

FIRST WIN

On Feb. 9, a 4-3 walk-off win over Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) southern-division foe, North Carolina Central, secured win No. 1 for the Howard University softball team, as well as etching head coach Tori Tyson's first career victory into the books.

Tyson’s first career victory catapulted several nonconference wins, including UNC Wilmington, which marked the program’s first out of conference victory since 2016.

YOUNG TRIO RECEIVE ALL-MEAC RECOGNITION

The MEAC unveiled its 2019 softball postseason honors where freshmen Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.), Xzarria Simmons (Escondido, Calif.) and Camille Navarro (Los Angeles) receive recognition. The trio of Bison made All-MEAC Second Team; however, Dennis headlined the afternoon after winning the 2019 MEAC Rookie of the Year award. As a result, Dennis became only the third Bison to win the award since 2006 (Rebecca Kirshner [2009] and Courtney Young [2007]).

TOP 25 FRESHMAN

For her outstanding performance during the 2019 season, Howard University softball newcomer Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.) was selected as one of the top 25 candidates for the honorable Schutt Sports/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division I National Freshman of the Year award. This was the first time in the program’s history that a student-athlete was recognized.

Dennis was the only MEAC freshman and student-athlete from a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) on this year's list.

FUTURE YOUNG SLUGGERS

For the program's future, Coach Tyson returns All-MEAC honorees Kalita Dennis (Elk Grove, Calif.), Camille Navarro (Los Angeles) and Xzarria Simmons (Escondido, Calif.), along with the league's top-hitting attack.
