Summary

Promotion comes from God, who is able to transform and elevate our lives in multiple ways. One example of this is found in the Old Testament story of Joseph, whose brothers sold him into slavery because they did not understand the calling on his life. When Joseph served in Potiphar’s house, God’s favor was on him and he prospered and was promoted; this continued even after Joseph was put in prison. The kind of supernatural progression that Joseph experienced still happens today, and it is independent of any human intellect or understanding. Before we entered into a relationship with Jesus, we were living under the heavy yoke of the curses that resulted from Adam and Eve’s sin in the garden of Eden. When Jesus came, He broke the curses and allowed believers access to supernatural promotion because of God’s grace. We have been lifted up, and we can now enjoy the kind of elevated life He wants for us.
  1. Joseph experienced supernatural promotion because he maintained a humble attitude.
    1. In the Old Testament, Joseph’s life was an example of supernatural progress beyond human comprehension.
      1. But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison. And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it. The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper (Genesis 39:21-23).
      2. And the warden of the prison committed to Joseph’s care all the prisoners who were in the prison; and whatsoever was done there, he was in charge of it (Genesis 39:22, AMPC).
    2. When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person (Job 22:29).
      1. Before we were born again and understood our identities in Christ, we were cast down.
      2. To promote means to lift up, raise up, elevate, advance, or upgrade. This was what Jesus did for us when He was resurrected.
      3. Jesus elevated the woman at the well and lifted her out of her shame and condemnation (John 4:3-29).
      4. The yoke and the burden of domination was the result of Adam and Eve’s sin. Because of what Jesus did, we are elevated and lifted up from that.
      5. We have been delivered from sickness, disease, poverty, inequality, and all other curses.
      6. And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6).
  1. A proper mindset allows God to promote us and make us a positive example for others.
    1. God lifts up the humble.
      1. One example of God raising up the humble was when He elevated young David over his brothers (1 Samuel 16:6-13).
      2. Expanded influence and increased responsibility is God’s will for those who trust Him.
    2. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings (Psalm 40:2).
      1. The Word of God rescues us from whatever horrible pit we find ourselves in, whether it is suicidal thinking or anything else that is not His will.
    3. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in (Psalm 24:7-9).
      1. We are not going backward, but up. We have been liberated from bondage and we are being taken to a place we have never been before.
      2. Jesus has already won the war; He will not let the enemy devour what is His.
      3. To see the king come in, we must look up with our spiritual eyes, not back to our past.
  1. God can promote us when no one else can or will. True promotion comes from Him.
    1. Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck. For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another (Psalm 75:5-7).
      1. We must not be in a place of pride.
      2. Promotion comes only from the north, which is up. That is where God resides.
      3. The reason we experience promotion is to display God’s goodness and to do kingdom business. This type of promotion is continual and ongoing.
      4. God is able to do things others cannot.
      5. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us (Ephesians 3:20).
    2. But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head (Psalm 3:3).
      1. God gives us the strength to see beyond the natural. This strength comes from what God places in us.
    3. There is presently a change, a shifting, and a lifting up taking place in the spiritual realm.
      1. Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee (Isaiah 60:1).
      2. Arise [from the depression and prostration in which circumstances have kept you—rise to a new life]! Shine (be radiant with the glory of the Lord), for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you! (Isaiah 60:1, AMPC).
  1. We have been enabled to do things in the natural that aid in our supernatural progress.
    1. God does not want us to get stuck in our circumstances. There are some practical things we can do to experience supernatural progress.
      1. In the natural realm, we can ask how we can help others. The Holy Spirit is our helper; when we ask Him for guidance, He will tell us what to do.
      2. We can provide the solution; the solution is inside us. We have wisdom, knowledge, grace, God’s riches, and everything else the Holy Spirit is.
      3. We can know our roles and responsibilities, and do them. In the spiritual realm our responsibility is to rest in Jesus’ finished works. This enables us to do our work in the natural and do a good job.
    2. There are several reasons why promotion does not come.
      1. We do not take the initiative. We must initiate a personal relationship with God. When God promised to bless Abraham, Abraham had to take the initiative first.
      2. We think too low. We must think like stewards who have been given the authority to govern and manage God’s resources.
      3. We think we deserve it; this indicates pride and an entitlement mentality. Jesus earned everything we need; we maintain it through humility.
        1. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up (James 4:9, 10).
      4. We do not accept feedback. We need feedback from others, as well as the Holy Spirit, so that we will not have to face criticism.
