The requirement of a rescue plan
By: Steve Mcginty
You might be standing outside the front door of an employee's home, hands clammy, and also a cold sweat on your brow, a metallic taste inside your mouth. You're feeling so nervous that you might vomit or even faint.

Precisely why do you feel this way?

Imagine as an employer how you might feel if you were going to explain to a family the reason why their loved one, a member of your workforce has died after falling from height.

Precisely why did this have to happen?

You realise that you overlooked, or perhaps didn't get around to the task of planning for rescue and emergencies, which could have saved that employees life.

Planning for rescue and emergencies in regard to work at height is greater than a monetary issue; now it is a legal and moral duty for all business employers. The Working at Height Regulations 2005 and BS8437:2005. 4 (1) & (2) says:

"Every employer shall ensure that all work at height includes planning for emergences and rescue."

My intention is actually to provide food for thought, ideas for the future and possibly some solutions to your immediate issues.

The advantages of a rescue plan

Even in work places of the most safety conscious employer's accidents occur, therefore a rescue plan is a vital part of working at height and really should be managed using a working at height method statement and risk assessment, and should include training and practice. The lack of any type of post-fall rescue plan not merely puts the victim at risk, but also puts rescuers in harms way. Unplanned attempts at rescue often result in secondary and tertiary injuries or deaths.

CRITICAL PHASES OF A RESCUE.

There are 4-phases of a rescue, each phase presents unique safety challenges and has to be considered individually. As with all safety issues, increasing safety in one area can compromise safety in others. Rescue operations are carried out under extreme pressure, whatever training your employees have had or are yet to have, will determine how they react as each phase develops.

PHASE 1- Before the fall

The key issue of fall protection prior to a fall is compliance. If a harness is too uncomfortable, or interferes too much with carrying out the work being done, operatives may not use the equipment or may modify it (illegally) to make it more tolerable. A poorly fitted harness can result in severe injuries following a fall making rescue more difficult.

PHASE 2- Fall Arrest

The whole concept of fall protection is that operatives who fall will be stopped by a shock absorbing tethering system. Unfortunately, the posture of the falling operative is unpredictable.

Depending on the harness attachment point and the position of the operative's body at fall arrest, different harness attachments offer different advantages. An attachment near the shoulders means that any drag from the lanyard will serve to position the operative's body in an upright position so the forces are distributed from head to foot. The head is somewhat protected if the legs and body precede it in the fall, but this offers some disadvantages after the fall arrest is completed.

PHASE 3 - Suspension

Many safety professionals naturally assume that once a fall has been arrested then the fall protection system has successfully completed its job. Unfortunately, this is not the case. An operative suspended in an upright position with the legs dangling in a harness of any type is subject to suspension trauma and orthostatic intolerance.

Fall victims can slow the onset of suspension trauma by pushing down vigorously with the legs, by positioning their body in a slight leg-high position or, by standing up. Harness design and fall injuries may prevent these actions.

PHASE 4 - Post-fall rescue

Rescue must come rapidly to minimise the dangers of suspension trauma. The circumstances together with the lanyard attachment point will determine the possibility of self-rescue.

In situations where self-rescue is not possible, operatives must be supervised at all times. Regardless of whether an operative can self-rescue or must rely on others, time is of the essence because an operative may lose consciousness in only a few minutes.

For conscious casualties we recommend (where possible) that those suspended keep their legs moving to keep the blood pumping and reduce the risk of venous pooling, whilst deploying a self recovery rescue system.

For unconscious casualties we recommend using a raising or lowering system to facilitate the rescue of an unconscious casualty, ideally the equipment chosen will allow the rescue to be carried out in less than five minutes.

Toxic Shock - Suspension Trauma - Orthostatic Intolerance

Unless the operative is rescued promptly using established safe procedures, suspension trauma caused by orthostatic intolerance could occur and result in serious or fatal injury as the brain, kidneys and other organs are deprived of oxygen. Most users of fall protection equipment are unaware of the hazard of suspension trauma.

Venous pooling - The need to faint and fall over

Death from suspension trauma is caused by orthostatic intolerance and is the result of venous pooling. This can occur any time a person is required to stand still for prolonged periods and may be worsened by heat and dehydration. Major blood vessels pass through the muscles in the legs. The movement of these muscles assists circulation by squeezing the blood back up towards the heart. If the muscles stop moving, gravity pulls the blood

down into the legs and reduces blood flow to vital organs

First Aid Procedures

Following completion of evidence based review of published medical literature: HSE has clarified guidance on the first aid management of a person falling into suspension in a harness who may develop 'suspension trauma'.

The key recommendations are:

a) No change should be made to the standard first aid guidance for the post recovery of a semi-conscious or unconscious person in a horizontal position, even if the subject of prior harness suspension.

b) No change should be made to the standard first aid guidance of ABC management, even if the subject of prior harness suspension.

c) A casualty who is experiencing pre-syncopal symptoms or who is unconscious whilst suspended in a harness should be rescued as soon as is safely possible.

d) If the rescuer is unable to immediately release a conscious casualty from a suspended position, elevation of

the legs by the casualty or rescuer where safely possible may prolong tolerance of suspension.

e) First responders to persons in harness suspension should be able to recognise the symptoms of pre-synsope.

For further guidance contact your first aid training provider

There are many other things to consider when planning for rescue, these include:

• How will you know someone has fallen?

• What communication systems are in place, how will your employee call for help?

• Who do your other employees call when an incident occurs?

• Incident Information, what information does the emergency services require?

• How safe will the rescuers be, before, during and post incident?

• How will the rescuers get to the casualty?

• Can you rescue in under 5 minutes, is there adequate equipment available?

• What if the casualty has additional injuries?

• Other considerations such as:

Ø Language barriers

Ø Adverse weather

Ø Working alone

Should you create a rescue plan that's very well thought out and sufficiently detailed to cover the majority of, if not all situations, obtain proper training, and practice it frequently. It is extremely improbable that you'll ever need to inform an employee's family of the death of a loved one, or give an account to the HSE that explains why you did not have a plan in place, when it is today a legal necessity to do so.

Spread Peace This Christmas

Luke 2:13-14

Christmas is a very important time of year. It's a time of year when the whole world is hearing the message of the birth of Jesus. It's a time when people are tenderhearted...the perfect time to plant seeds of love in the lives of those you meet.
Sometimes those seeds may just take the form of a kind word in the middle of rush-hour shopping. Other times, you may get the opportunity to pray and minister to someone. But whatever the situation, keep a sharp eye out for even the smallest chance to assist people.
I've had some outstanding experiences giving a few dollars to someone in need. As they are taking the money, I tell them, "This money is from the Lord Jesus Christ. I serve Him. He is the One who instructed me to help you."
It's amazing how many people are ready to hear what you have to say when you say it in love. They're starved for someone to really care. Be that someone this Christmas season. Spread the Word about the peace that's available in Jesus. Tell about His goodwill toward men.
Who knows how many of those small seeds may one day take root and bring one more precious person into the glorious kingdom of God?

Special Teams: Winning the Hidden Yardage

Although special teams are often overlooked, they almost always have a direct and immense impact on the outcome of a game. In fact, improving special teams play may be the quickest way for a coach to improve his team, because of the “hidden yardage” that occurs when specials team units are on the field. Special Teams: Winning the Hidden Yardage outlines the fundamental elements, philosophies, drill work, and schemes that can improve special teams play and enhance a teams advantage in the battle for “hidden yardage.”

Among the topics covered:

• Motivational aspects
• Punt team
• Punt block/return
• Kickoff team
• Field-goal units
• Practice structure

Grant CainRecruiting Coordinator, Inside Linebackers Coach and Co-Special Teams Coach at Mercer University
Grant Cain begins his second season as the recruiting coordinator, inside linebackers coach and co-special teams coach at Mercer University in 2014.

In his first season, Cain mentored a young inside linebacker unit that helped key a Bears’ rushing defense that ranked second in the Division I FCS. His unit had two of the team’s top four tacklers, led by freshmen Tyler Ward, who posted a team-high 101 tackles (10.5 for loss), and Devin Davidson, who added 57 tackles and two fumble recoveries.

Cain came to Mercer after a seven-year post at Coastal Carolina University, holding various positions on the Chanticleers’ staff. His stint at Coastal Carolina began in 2005, when he was hired as a graduate assistant coach under then-head coach David Bennett.

He parlayed his role as a graduate assistant coach into a full-time coaching position in 2007 after graduating with a master’s degree in instructional technology. His appointment as outside linebackers coach ushered in an era of consistency on the defensive side of the ball as the team ranked among the nation’s top-23 programs in tackles-for-loss (TFL) in 2007, led the conference in TFL in 2008 and paced the league in sacks in 2009.

In 2010, Cain was promoted to coach both the defensive ends and outside linebackers, and continued to produce immediate dividends in his assigned defensive areas. Despite suffering a season-ending injury to preseason all-conference selection Quinton Davis, Cain helped develop senior DE Kent Harper from a third-string backup into one of the league’s premier defensive players. Harper finished the 2010 season with an average of 10.0 tackles per game, ranking third among Big South players and 16th-best in the nation before landing All-Big South Second Team honors.

Cain’s time at Coastal Carolina saw the team reach unprecedented success, capturing Big South Championships in 2005, 2006 and 2010. Overall, his work helped the Chanticleers rack up a gaudy 47-33 overall record, while becoming a perennial league power with a 22-13 Big South record. During more than seven seasons at Coastal Carolina, Cain also contributed instruction for the special teams units and inside linebackers.

Prior to his time at Coastal Carolina, Cain spent the 2005 spring and summer seasons as a defensive assistant with the Colorado Crush of the Arena Football league. His efforts helped lead the Crush to its first AFL title in the franchise’s third year of existence.

Cain’s playing days saw him earn team captain honors in his senior season at Catawba College, an NCAA Division II member of the South Atlantic Conference. During his four seasons as a student-athlete, the Indians made national playoff appearances every year, including advancing to the semifinals in 2001.

A 2003 graduate of Catawba with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Cain is married to the former Shauna Koontz. The couple has two sons, Caleb and Samuel. Book this course.........

Plyometric Training

Michael Boyle
Numerous articles have been written about plyometric training for athletes. Very few have detailed progressive programs that take into account the need for a system of training that can be applied to a broad range of athletes. Although the works of Chu, Radcliffe and Gambetta were outstanding at the time of their writing, very little has been written in the last ten years that connects our current knowledge of functional training with how to design and implement a system of plyometric exercises. In order to fully understand plyometrics, we must look at basics like terminology, volume and frequency.
Terminology
The first area that needs to be addressed in the area of plyometric training is terminology. The language of plyometrics must be universal so that any coach or athlete can view the program of any other coach or athlete and understand the exercises without photos or video. The discrepancies in terminology were first brought to my attention by Mike Clark of the National Academy of SportsMedicine. Clark pointed out in a 2000 lecture that many coaches currently used names to describe plyometric exercises that were not properly descriptive of the movement.
Clark went on to detail the types of exercises and the specific actions:

iHealthTube Featuring: Most Can Take Time–Not Rush Into Treatment and Why Did I Get Cancer, The Facts You Need to Know

Should you rush to treatments after receiving a cancer diagnosis? It's often recommended. It does depend on a number of factors. But listen to what Carl Helvie did and what he recommends for many others when it comes to that decision! [Video below] Learn more about Carl Helvie's work at http://bit.ly/CarlHelvieAmz

Why Did I Get Cancer, The Facts You Need to Know
By: Alan Wighton

Most people are shocked and bewildered when first diagnosed with cancer and naturally turn to the people they trust the most for the reasons why. Doctors may suggest that it could be genetics or something outside their control but they don’t really know. Cancer is only a modern day problem and also only in western civilised countries so the causes of cancer are well known but unfortunately not by our medical system that are more interested in offering you their ineffective toxic treatments.

One hundred years ago cancer was almost unheard of and today in undeveloped or third world countries it is still a rare diseases. If our mainstream medical system was interested in find the reasons why there is so much cancer now why don’t they travel to a country where it doesn’t occur and find out why it is not occurring. The simple fact is that cancer has become a profitable business for both our medical care system and pharmaceutical companies.

To overcome cancer you have to know the reason why it first appeared because before you can be free of it you must deal with the factors that first caused it. All cancers are a self-caused disease and they are caused by an immune system that’s been weakened and didn’t control cancer cells as they appeared within the body and that is because of the way we now live. Supermarkets and the food we are putting in our mouths are one of the main contributing factors.

The food we eat on a daily basis has changed over these last few decades and is the reason why there is so much cancer now so common sense should tell you that it’s time to make some changes. Start by removing that dead over processed food that the supermarket shelves are full of. Other lifestyle changes are exercise everyday as your immune system needs it to function efficiently. Also it’s best to get exercise outdoors which means you will also be getting some valuable vitamin D from the sun and that is well known to be beneficial to a cancer victim.

Other facts doctors won’t tell you are to be wary of the many chemicals that are in circulation today which are finding their way into our bodies. We are overwhelmed with toxic chemicals that we breathe in as in exhaust fumes or fly sprays, they are absorbed through the skin because of our use of personal care products and of course we ingest them because of additives in our processed food. Most of these chemicals have been extracted from crude oil and are contributing to many of our health problems.

It’s important to realise that with a cancer diagnosis the growth itself is only a symptom and a symptom is only a sign that something is wrong with the entire body. The symptom itself is not the problem and it is pointless just removing these growths which do little towards long term healing. Patients may experience remission following the treatments in use today but if you don’t remove the reasons why it first grew then that is not a cure and the cancer will only grow again.

Cancer is caused by uncontrolled cell growths within the body because the body’s defence system didn’t control these foreign cells when they appeared. It’s because our immune system had been weakened by the factors mentioned above. To solve the problem it makes sense to strengthen the immune system with healthy living instead of weakening it with toxic treatments. The body need’s to be healed and natural living does that.

Picking Up the Pieces of a Shattered Mind
By: Jacquiline Macaraig

For some, it is easy to visualize the Human Mind as a single, cohesive unit with all parts collectively working to run the rest of the body. This is the way the mind works for most people. The process is smooth, clean, and seamless. However, most people who are not mental health experts fail to see that the mind is a fragile thing. An appropriate metaphor for mental health would be a beautiful porcelain tea set from the Ming Dynasty of China. You lose just one piece and the set automatically loses all value. In a similar manner, damaging or losing one aspect of a person's mental health can create permanent damage.

The human mind, however, is a ferociously adaptive thing. The constant barrage of stress and anxiety over the course of human evolution has given people a rather potent talent for recovery. People pick up the fragments of mental health and attempt to move on much the same as before the trauma. Most people find ways to get over their problems without outside help, alleviating the stress that caused the problem initially. In other cases, people require counseling to help the self-repair process start. However, in the case of dissociative identity disorder, the adaptability of a person's psyche can, itself, pose a problem.

Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is probably better known in pop culture as "split personality disorder." The causes of this particularly dynamic mental health disorder varies from patient to patient, according to most studies. For some, extreme cases of stress and anxiety push the personality of the patient to the breaking point, forcing the mind to adapt by developing a stronger personality. In other cases, the incredible unwillingness of a person to perform a task required of them forces the mind to create a personality better suited to handling the task than the original. In most cases, the "split" is caused by extreme emotional and psychological trauma, with some instances having physical trauma acting as "insult" to the earlier emotional and mental "injury."

The difficulty in detecting DID lies in the fact that the various physical and psychological signs can often be easily misdiagnosed. Memory lapses are just as likely to be caused by stress and anxiety as they are by personality B taking control from personality A. A prolonged state of acute sadness can be a sign of the patient developing depression, or it is possible that personality C is reliving emotions from a past trauma. Since the personalities can interact with one another and address the patient directly, it can sometimes be mislabeled as an advanced form of schizophrenia. The fact that the more overt symptoms are not constant (different symptoms can appear at different times) also makes it difficult to accurately diagnose DID without prolonged observation.

Treatment for DID generally focuses on integrating all of the personalities until there is only one left, which may or may not be the original personality. The process is a slow-going one, which makes full use of a wide range of therapeutic and counseling techniques, as well as psychoactive medications. In general, the use of drugs is used to alleviate related symptoms, but the disorder itself can only be tackled in the battlefield of the mind.

The problem is that therapy and counseling can often stir up some emotions and memories that the patient would rather suppress. Indeed, in a large number of cases of DID, the personalities began to take form in the patient's mind after a traumatic event was suppressed. As the patient's original personality begins to deal with the actions of his other personalities, his own resurfaced memories, and the internal conflicts that emerge when attempting to reconcile the fragments, the process only gets harder. The process also involves helping the patient learn how to adapt to various situations without resorting to creating an alternate personality to handle it. Often, the treatment and counseling for DID can take years, with some patients never actually achieving full recovery. A good number manage to reintegrate into society with only one personality, but they are seen as the exceptions that prove the rule.

Seek God First

Matthew 6:33

Whenever Ken and I talk about living by faith, I know there are some people who think, Oh, that's easy for you. You're preachers. You have it made! And, in some ways, we do. We have it made because our calling demands that we give God our attention, and giving God your attention always brings success.
But we haven't always lived that way. In fact, the first time I ever saw Kenneth Copeland, he was about as far from a preacher as I figured you could get. He flew planes and sang in nightclubs. As for me, I was a college girl who said she would never marry a preacher and who had never even heard about the new birth.
Right after we got married, Ken went into a business enterprise that we thought was going to make us rich. So I quit my job and went to work for this new company. Two weeks later it folded.
We ended up sleeping on a rented rollaway bed that sagged in the middle. We had a wrought-iron coffee table Ken made in high school and a black and white TV. Nothing else. No refrigerator. No stove. I cooked in my coffee pot and an electric skillet and used a cardboard box on the porch to keep our food cold.
We were flat broke. Unemployed. Deeply in debt. I had nowhere to go. No furniture. No nothing.
Then one day I picked up the Bible Ken's mother had given him for his birthday. In the front she'd written this verse, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." I turned and read Matthew 6. It said God cared for the birds. For the first time in my life it got into my heart that God cared where I was and what I was doing. I figured if He cared for birds, He cared for me! I knelt in that bare room and told Jesus that if He could do anything with my life, He could certainly have it. That's all I remember saying.
I had no idea I had just been born again. Two weeks later Ken found a new job. We moved to a new furnished apartment and bought a better car. In the midst of it all, something else happened—Ken got born again.
Don't worry if you don't "have it made." We certainly didn't when all this started. Just stick with God and let Him make you. He is a good God who is good to all (Psalms 145:9).
Make a decision in your heart to seek Him first. Then all the other things will be added.
