BPI Sports-POST SHOW: THE AFTERMATH

From BPISports
post show

What is post show? Post show is the phase after you have completed a show. In my opinion, post show is much more difficult than the contest prep itself. If you are a member of a local gym, you are likely friends or at least gym acquaintances with a competitor. Competing is popular, and you’ve also likely been following many competitors on various forms of social media. You have followed their impressive journey to stage – from the dieting, the endless selfies, the improved physique, and then all the stage shots. You understand the process of the contest prep, but what about after the show? Do you fully understand this phase?
It is very important to understand what post show is and be ready for it, both physically and mentally. During contest prep, you are so focused on one thing and one thing only: getting on stage and looking your best. It is easy to stay on track because anytime your mind wonders, temptations rise or you consider getting off track, you quickly think about the stage and it seems you have the inner strength of a ninja to stay on track and keep on going. However, once the show is complete, you don’t have this “stay on track” mentality because you are no longer stepping on stage. This is when the battle of wanting to stay on track but not having to do so sets in. This is where the problems can begin to arise.
If you have been dieting for 16 weeks or longer, it is crucial that you reverse diet out of a show. What is reverse dieting? It is as the name applies: “reversing out a diet” means slowly increasing calories to allow your metabolism to adjust to the increased calories while maintaining body fat.
For more information on Reverse Dieting, stay tuned for another blog next month!

PHYSICAL EFFECTS

Most people don’t have the information or knowledge to reverse diet, and end up going back to “normal” eating after their show or even worse: bingeing. Bingeing is when someone eats a large amount of food – more than the average person – during one particular period of time. Often, when someone binges, it’s as if they’ve lost control over themselves and continue to eat even when they are already fully satisfied. After being on a restricted diet for so long, it is very common for this to occur, and many competitors (myself included) have experienced this on occasion.
Having some structure and a reverse diet set in place can help prevent this bingeing. Let’s consider bingeing’s impact on the body. During a binge, someone can easily consume more calories than they eat in a two-day period on their normal diet plan. The problem with this is that after a long period of dieting, the body is “impaired”. Your metabolism isn’t as fast, Leptin levels are decreased, and thyroid production isn’t as efficient, so you aren’t burning as many calories as you would if you hadn’t been dieting for an extended period of time.
So now you have a slow metabolism and you just consumed enough food to feed a tiny village… the result? Potential metabolic damage due to elevated insulin levels, which will in turn cause your metabolism to slow down. Excess insulin levels will lead to increased fat storage. It will also have a negative effect on your thyroid: which is another powerful factor in metabolism. Along with these negative metabolic effects, energy levels plummet, making daily tasks a lot more difficult.
As you can see, bingeing has some serious consequences, but what is much more detrimental is the psychological effects it can have on someone. Bingeing can also sometimes lead to an eating disorder referred to as Binge Eating Disorder. According to WebMD.com these symptoms include:
  • You eat more food than other people do in the same situation
  • Feel like you can’t control how much you eat
  • Feel upset after you binge
  • Have an eating binge at least once a week for three months on average
Although I have experienced binge eating a few times before, I do not have them frequently and would not be classified as having this disorder. I therefore, cannot speak on those who deal with this, but recommend professional help if this criterion meets your own.

PSYCHOLOGICAL SIDE EFFECTS

Let’s rewind back to hitting the stage. For most people, you have just accomplished something quite extraordinary – being able to manipulate your body and get it stage ready is a huge accomplishment and no easy task. It is amazing to see yourself turn into this tiny little action figure. The problem? Once you have seen yourself at “your best” it can completely distort your body image and the way in which you view yourself and others moving forward. If you aren’t educated on the concept of dieting and stage leanness you might think that it’s realistic to look that way year-round, so when you start to soften up after the show, which is necessary, it can hit you hard.
It is very important to understand that manipulating your body to compete is for stage purposes and stage purposes only – it is not realistic and definitely not an attainable look to strive towards year-round. Your entire body would be out of whack, and as I have said before, the body doesn’t like to be “out of whack.” It will fight back in order to restore balance.
It is important to understand that you NEED fat. A women’s body is this immaculate and quite incredible thing: we can create a human inside of us! This isn’t something to be taken lightly. We are amazing. That being said, your body is made to make babies, and it NEEDS fat in order to do so. Even if you aren’t carrying a baby, your body needs fat to function optimally. When I am stage lean, I don’t function optimally, and neither do you. I have little to no energy, I am moody, I have little to no sex drive, I have no personality; I am literally a walking “zombie.” Hell, I look badass but I am just a blob of a person. It’s great to accomplish this for a short period of time and for competition purposes, but full time, HELL NO.
You must eat more food again, gain weight again, function properly again. Don’t be so consumed by looking a certain way that you forget to live your life feeling good and being healthy on the INSIDE.
Everyone’s body is different; we all carry fat differently. Some carry less, others more. Some put on muscle easy, others not so much. We are all unique in our own way, and this is what makes us human. Each of us have our own strengths, our own weaknesses, but they are different. We all have our vulnerabilities, our moments of doubt and weakness.
Social media might be one of the culprits. I love social media and what is has done for me and my career but it tends to lead to constant physique comparison. Comparison of others is one of the killers of happiness. We look at other people, we focus in on their strengths, their successes and then we focus in on our own weakness our own failures.
I too compare myself to others; sometimes I wish I was someone else. I wish things came easier, I wish I looked like this…. “wish, wish, wish.” The problem with wishing is that it doesn’t do ANYTHING. You can sit there and dwell on what you don’t have, and trust me I have, but at the end of the day it doesn’t solve anything. You are you, own that sh*t. Be proud that you have differences. Be proud that you are unique. Be proud of who you are. Don’t focus on others and how you wish you were them, or had this, or that. Focus on you, and your strengths, learn to make yourself better, learn to love you.
As I sit here and write, I think to myself, “Wow Victoria, it truly does appear you have it all figured out! You give advice as if you have mastered this all!” This couldn’t be further from the truth. Yes, I give you advice as I want to inform and help, but learning to take my own advice is truly half the battle. I am not perfect; I am always a work in progress and am working hard at also taking this advice. I will continue to have days of doubt, but as long as I strive towards improving myself, focusing on myself, and loving myself… eventually I will succeed.

Police Learn Military Combat Techniques to Fight Off Active Shooters | NBC Left Field and Backfire!

Backfire
By: Stephen Shron
Hello, my name is Stephen and I am not a violent person. I shouldn’t have probably begin with that but I think that I should make a point of that. So I will start from the beginning. About 7 years ago give or take several months I was on a kids summer camp. I was a chubby kid more on the fat side which was just beginning to go through puberty. Suffice it to say going to the camp wasn’t my idea. My father decided that I need toughening and he sent me in the middle of nowhere for a summer full hiking, biking, swimming in the lake and away from video games. None of my friends were going there and basically it was like a hell for me. The other kids made making fun of me a kind of sport so I stayed away from them as much as possible. Probably my only real friend in the camp was one of the instructors - Avi. He was an ex-Israeli Defense Force soldier and had a very strange sense of humor but I liked him because he treated me like adult and not like a fat piece of lard.

Anyway every morning around 6 am he would go near the lake and train some moves for a week or so I thought it was Kung-Fu but eventually I understood that it was Krav Maga, "the Isreali Kung-Fu" as Avi put it. After several days watching him (I was getting before everyone else because this made getting away from them easier), I convinced him to teach me. And so my Krav Maga training began. It wasn’t long before I realized I really enjoy practicing the moves and later training with him. By the end of the summer I was really hooked on the concept and the idea of this martial art and not surprisingly when I went back home I looked for Krav Maga schools in the NYC and found several. As I continued practicing it I lost weight and the abuse from the school bullies stop. Everything would have been just peachy if it wasn’t for my father who constantly mocked me about training Krav Maga, according to him a real man didn’t need to train fancy jumps and kicks. So he decided to prove me that I wasn’t ready to protect myself, but his plan backfired.

Tactical Workouts

While I was sleeping he barged in my room with a mask while my big brother was recording the whole thing on camera. He expected to freak me out by grabbing my shoulder and screaming "This is a robbery" in my ear, he didn’t expect my just woken up self to hit him with the night lamp in the face and then to almost instantly to proceed kicking and hitting him. The video was quite spectacular actually, the type of which turns viral when it goes in the web.

As a direct result from this adventure my father had a broken nose and lots of bruises. He now attends my Krav Maga School too and my mother keeps the tape and shows it on Christmas and family gatherings for much of my father’s annoyance.

In conclusion I want to say that I am not violent man, but when the thanks to my training when the situation expects it I will react properly even if it is my father.

For more information on kids summer camp visit IKM Krav Maga.

Nearly 20 years since the Columbine High School shooting, the annual rate of active shooter attacks in the United States has tripled, with mass shootings like the ones in Las Vegas, Parkland, Florida, and Sutherland Springs, Texas, claiming more victims than ever before. Joyce Meyer Ministries Featuring: The Rewards of Serving God - Part 1[Video] - Enjoying Everyday Life and Invest in Someone

Invest in Someone

Adapted from the resource Starting Your Day Right Devotional - by Joyce Meyer

Take chances today and invest in someone else’s life, especially if God tells you to do so. You may give them something of value only to learn they waste it as they have always done in the past. But remember that God made an investment in you, and He wants you to be willing to make an investment in somebody else.
Jesus died to give everybody a chance. Not everyone takes advantage of His provision, but we all have an equal opportunity to enjoy the abundant life. If you help someone, and they end up not doing what is right with it, that is between them and God. Give thanks that you are able to give, and then do whatever God tells you to do.
Prayer Starter: Father, show me ways to purposely be a blessing today. Help me to be gracious and kind, and invest in others the way You have invested I me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Minding Your Business! Featuring: The Benefits of Email Marketing

-Presented On US Sports Net By Yahoo Small Business

By: A. Roberts

Email marketing is one of today’s more efficient and accessible ways of advertising. As for global reach, it remains the most cost effective marketing strategy at your disposal. Some companies have phased out their more traditional marketing approaches such as Yellow pages, billboard, and cold calls in order to experience a more ‘instant gratification’ effect from their marketing efforts. Even the smallest of businesses have turned to Email marketing to help boost sales and revenue.

Email Marketing is Not Spam!

First off, when I refer to email marketing, I am not referring to spam. A proper email marketing campaign is targeted to people who want to hear about your products or services, typically, customers, prospective customers, or members if you work in an association. Email marketing is part of a marketing and communications function and should only be executed if you have the permission of your contacts of subscribers.

If you do not have properly developed list of contacts of people who have agreed to hear from you, and you go down the route of blasting out unsolicited emails, well, you’ve effectively let the world know that you don’t want any friends. If however you want to learn more about the right way to execute email marketing campaigns, then read on.

Getting Started

A good starting point is to get hold of an email software application that has the capability to distribute mass emails to a specified contact list, store demographic data, and track results of your campaigns. I’m partial to InSite Messages because it does everything you’d expect an email campaign system to do plus, it generates instant reports on pertinent information such as send rates, link-through rates and ties all your campaign data this back into contact information and message history.

InSite Messages was a heaven sent whenever I had to begin my marketing campaign for survey participation. We also used it to help bring in registrants for our Spring and Fall Conventions, product releases, publication sales and weekly newsletters to our members. The only thing to remember about blast emails is to be mindful to send meaningful information and not to inundate your customers’ inbox with emails containing unnecessary information.

Some Benefits

  • Won’t clog up your email server.
  • Cost effective and sometimes even FREE.
  • Outbound emails can be scheduled and sent automatically.
  • Comes with templates for professional look and feel.
  • Automated contact lists and subscription links.
  • Manage content or insert feeds as content.
  • Easy to read, up-to-the-minute reports.
Beyond the Basics

Beyond basic email marketing communications, many news services are now using email campaign management software to send news and bulletins to subscribers. A good email campaign management system will allow you to insert RSS feeds directly into the page that will be emailed to subscription lists. All you have to do is indicate what feeds you want included on your page. You can then schedule when the message or bulletin will be sent, and the feeds will be emailed on a single page to your subscribers.

Of course this works well if you have a list of subscribers. If you are using a tool like InSite Messages, you can manage contacts and subscribers and assign contacts to any number of lists. Once your contacts are in the system, you can easily set up unsubscribe links in the body of your messages. If a contact no longer wants to receive emails from you, they can simply click the unsubscribe button and the email campaign software will drop them from future mailings.

Below, I have outlined a quick summary of a few ways businesses and organizations are using email campaign software to communicate and market to their stakeholders.

Customer Newsletters & Bulletins: Enewsletters and bulletins are a great way to connect with customers on new programs, products, services and to communicate other important information about your organization.

Employee Newsletters & Bulletins: Internal communications is an important and often overlooked function. Email blasts to employees on new programs, initiatives, products and services can be a very effective way to communicate what is going on in your organization.

Email Marketing Campaigns: Email marketing campaigns are a great way to market new programs, products, services and communicate other important information to your customers.

News Services and Announcements: Email event notifications and announcements are also important to communicate to your customers and prospects.

Press and Media Releases: Public Relations companies have really picked up on email campaign software to streamline the design and distribution of professional press releases. With a click of a button media contacts can be notified immediately.

Whichever direction you decide to take your email marketing, you are sure to keep your customers in the loop and up-to-date on what is going on in your organization. And at the very least it proves you are alive and well and flowing with the ever-changing tides of technology.

CELEBRATING NATIONAL SALAD MONTH! TEN TIPS TO JAZZ UP A SALAD

National Salad Month

It’s National Salad Month, which means it’s time take a stand for salad. Despite its reputation as “rabbit food,” salad is nutritious, and when prepared the right way, delicious! All through May, we encourage you to incorporate salads into your diet – but not just any salads. Create a salad you can actually look forward to by adding toppings, trying new dressings and even branching out with some new greens.
In honor of National Salad Month, we present the best tips and quick fixes to jazz up a salad.

MIX UP YOUR LETTUCES

Iceberg and Romaine are not the only kinds of lettuce. Try mixed greens, arugula, endive, kale and other leafy green bases.

OPEN A JAR

Adding olives, pickles, yellow peppers, capers, and pickled beets can really perk up a mundane pile of greens.

SAY CHEESE

Cheese can be a salad highlight. Blue cheese, parmesan, feta and goat cheese lead the way, but the sky is the limit when adding cheeses to salads for fantastic flavors.

GET FRUITY

Just because you add fruit to a salad, does not make it a fruit salad. Don’t be afraid to toss a few grapes or berries into your salad or boost it with chopped apple, pear or mandarin pieces.

BE SEEDY & GO NUTS

Adding nuts to salads adds protein and flavor. Walnuts and almonds are salad main stays, while pine nuts, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, chopped Brazil nuts or hazelnuts add more unique flavors.

HAVE FUN WITH FUNGUS

Mushrooms are as diverse as salads. You can find a mushroom flavor to complement or enhance almost any concoction of vegetables. Get adventurous with chopped shitakes, portobellos, criminos or chanterelles.

GET FANCY WITH SEAFOOD

Embrace your inner gourmet chef and sear up some fresh caught tuna or tilapia! Too ambitious? Canned tuna, salmon and sardines make great salad additions too, plus add valuable protein.

TRY A LITTLE SOUTHWESTERN FLARE

It’s not too hard to turn a plain and simple pile of chopped romaine into a salad that screams with delicious Southwestern flavor. Simply add ingredients like avocado, bacon, cheese, corn and black beans. For more protein, add chipotle marinated chicken. Dress it with a creamy cilantro option and for even more flavor, garnish with Pico de Gallo.

ADD SOME ASIAN STYLE

Take that romaine and mix it up with some diced carrots, crispy noodles, baby corn, snow peas and tangerines, and you have a restaurant-worthy dish. Dress it up with a soy ginger dressing and top it off with grilled chicken, steak or shrimp. Put the finishing touch on with sesame seeds.

DROP SOME BEETS

Want to make plate full of plain arugula pop? Drop some beets on it. Try roasted beets over arugula greens with goat cheese and a raspberry vinaigrette for an easy but deliciously gourmet salad idea.
