Police Standard Obstacle Course and Spousal Impact on Substance Abuse and Rehabilitation

[Video below]-TRACOM, in collaboration with DSO National Laboratories, developed a customized obstacle course which aims to simulate obstacles commonly encountered by front line officers in urban areas. To ensure realism, the obstacles were constructed in the same dimensions as would be commonly found in the real operating environment. An officer undergoing the PSOC -- which covers a distance of 1.4km - will have to do a 400m run, clear 10 purpose-built obstacles and end off with a 200m home run. PSOC provides officers with skills such as landing and hurdling, dodging stationary and moving objects, situational awareness, coordination and balance. Introduced in March 2007 as a basic training requirement for all Police trainees, PSOC will help to ease them into an operational state of mind as well as physical readiness when they carry out their duties as front line officers.

Spousal Impact on Substance Abuse and Rehabilitation

Drug addicts' spouses can have an enormous impact on both their substance abuse and recovery processes. In some situations, the spouse acts as a caretaker during treatment and rehabilitation. In other unfortunate cases, a spouse can be an enabler for an addict's dangerous behaviors. Whatever the case may be, husbands and wives can make or break the recovery process for an addict seeking help. The worst situation is when a drug addict or alcoholic's spouse is a co-user. Most violence and sexual abuse between couples involve the use of drugs or alcohol, and it can be hard for either addict to escape this abusive relationship. In some cases, an abusive spouse may act as the main provider for the drug to which both parties are addicted. At other times, the victims of violence fear that if they seek addiction therapy, their co-abusing spouses will only respond with more violence. They also fear that their spouse will turn them over to the police if they attempt to seek treatment or leave. Ultimately, one spouse's recovery often destroys the relationship. When the common bond of drug addiction is severed, there may be nothing left to support the marriage, whether it was abusive or not. Another role which a spouse can unfortunately play is that of the enabler, someone who triggers the addict's drug use. Enablers may buy drugs for their spouses, assuming that they'll just get them elsewhere, anyway. Other enablers may make excuses or even tell outright lies about their spouse's drug use in order to avoid legal trouble or the emotional intensity of facing the problem head-on. Despite these negative effects spouses can have on addicts' substance abuse, they are also critical to the recovery process. They often must take the first step and enroll their husband or wife in a treatment program. Since spouses are typically the most influential people in addicts' lives, their unwavering support throughout treatment and rehabilitation can also make or break the success of the recovery. Because they are so important to recovery, spouses and other family members often receive therapy along with the addict. In group counseling sessions, they develop better communication skills and gain a deeper understanding of the root causes, symptoms, and solutions to addictive behavior. However, co-using or enabling spouses can be detrimental to an addict's treatment, and they are sometimes purposefully excluded from this kind of therapy. At the very least, spouses should lend support whenever and wherever possible during an addict's recovery. Though entire families feel the devastating effects of addiction, it is often the spouses whose close relationship with addicts puts them in the toughest spots. Fortunately, they also have the most power to make a positive difference. The Modern Meaning of the story of Doubting Thomas

Thomas is known to be one of the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ in the Bible. He was also referred to as Didymus which literally means the ‘twin'. He may not be a popular one among the twelve but he earned himself the name ‘Doubting Thomas'. The doubting Thomas bible story began when he did not believe that the Lord Jesus Christ had actually risen from the dead on the third day after he died.
Christ appeared before the disciples but during that time, Thomas wasn't with them. When he was told about the appearance, refused to believe and uttered the words: 'Unless I see the nail marked His hands and place my finger on his wounds, and place my hand into his side, I shall not believe". After eight days, the Lord appeared again and this time, Thomas was present, too. Jesus approached him and asked him to place his finger on His wounds. After this, Jesus uttered the words which were mentioned in John 20:26-29.
One of the most powerful lines that people live with is ‘blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed'. Such line is a testimony to the power that Christ has to heal those who ache. Being called as Doubting Thomas may sound a little negative. However, Thomas himself had very good qualities. He demonstrated a great deal of loyalty and courage. Thomas showed courage when he expressed willingness to accompany Jesus when He headed to Bethany in order to raise Lazarus from the dead.
The story of Doubting Thomas mirrors many people of today's world. During this time, when life has become increasingly difficult for many, faith has been subjected to many tests. Certainly, Doubting Thomas lives in each and every one on this planet. Sadly, some people wake up from misconceptions and disbelieve while others do not.
