Elizabeth City State Rallies to Hand Bowie State Volleyball a Five-Set Setback
BOWIE, Md. - Bowie State volleyball surrendered a two set to none advantage and dropped a key CIAA division match to Elizabeth City State, falling in five sets by scores of 25-17, 25-22, 9-25, 20-25 and 7-15. The loss dips the Lady Bulldogs overall season mark to 1-12, 1-5 in the CIAA and 0-3 in the conferences Northern Division.
Lady Bulldogs’ freshman Valerie Taylor (Walkersville, Md.) paced the home team with eight kills on 23 attacks and added one dig, two solo blocks and one block assists. Junior Yaje Ngundam (Bowie, Md.) and sophomore India Mason (New Orleans, La.) contributed seven kills apiece while juniors Alexis Fisher (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) and Marissa Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) along sophomore Amy Harvey (Laurel, Md.) tallied three kills each.
Harvey setup her teammates 23 times and recorded 12 digs but she committed a career-high 16 ball handling errors. Martinez picked up a team-high 18 digs and Ngundam added a dozen digs.
It was all Bowie State in the opening set as the Lady Bulldogs led from beginning to end. However, set two featured eight ties and two lead changes. Elizabeth City State’s largest lead of set two was at 18-13 before Bowie State stormed back to tie the set at 18-all on a service ace by Ngundam. A service error by ECSU’s Zhana Winters broke the tie and gave BSU the lead for good for the remainder of set two.
The Lady Vikings dominated the third set, with ECSU’s Kelsey Smith doing most of the damage. Smith was responsible for five the teams’ 10 third set kills on six attacks. With Elizabeth City State holding a 13-8 lead, the Lady Vikings went on an 11-0 run before an Ngundam kill stops the run at 24-9. From that point, Smith drilled a kill into the A.C Jordan Arena court to close out set three.
In set four, Bowie State had its largest lead at 7-3 only to see Smith and company battle back to tie the set at 9-9. The set would see two more ties before Elizabeth City gained the lead for the first time since 1-0.
An attack error by Bowie State sophomore Kyerra Martin (Washington, D.C.) gave Elizabeth City State a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the fourth set.
The fifth and final set of the match featured two ties with the last coming a 6-6. From that point, Elizabeth City State went on a 9-1 run to close out the night.
Elizabeth City State (4-7, 4-2 CIAA, 2-1 North) was led by Smith’s double-double of 24 kills and 11 digs. Rosetta Becerra recorded a double-double as well with 17 kills and 16 digs. Three other Lady Vikings tallied double figure digs as Tracie Twine earned a match-high 21 digs, Emmesha White accounted for 10 and Krystal Sawyer chipped in 12 digs in the win.

Coppin State men’s basketball to make at least three national television appearances during 2014-15 season
BALTIMORE – Witnessing the exciting debut of Michael Grant’s revved-up style of play will require fans to stay up later than David Letterman and Conan O’Brien while consuming lots of coffee.
Coppin State’s season-opener on Friday, November 14 at the University of Oregon will tip shortly after midnight and be shown live on the Pac-12 Network.
With Grant, Coppin State’s first-year men’s basketball coach, the Eagles will make at least three national television appearances this season. Some of Coppin State’s non-conference opponents, including Oregon, have announced game times and television plans for its 2014-15 season matchups against the Eagles.
Coppin State’s second game of the season against Illinois on Sunday, November 16 will be on the B1G Network at 6:00 p.m. CSU fans can watch the Eagles battle the Fighting Illini and then flip over to catch Carrie Underwood’s hot “Sunday Night Football” intro.
It will be the first of two Coppin State games to be televised live by the B1G Network. The Eagles’ Monday, December 22 matchup against Michigan will be beamed to a national audience in prime time as the contest begins at 8:00 p.m.
Another regional television game that has been announced is against reigning NCAA champion Connecticut on Sunday, Dec. 14. That game will be played at the XL Center in downtown Hartford at 4:00 p.m. and be televised live by SNY (SportsNet New York).
Other television appearances will be announced as they become available.
Grant and the Eagles start the season with a four-game road trip in which they will play once in each time zone of the contiguous United States. As far as the 2014-15 schedule, game times have been set for all but the Evansville (Sunday, Dec. 28) and Akron (Sat., Jan. 3) contests.
Coppin State, which won 12 games last season and advanced to the MEAC semifinals, has 11 players returning.
Senior guard Taariq Cephas, senior forward Dallas Gary, senior guard Daquan Brickhouse, senior forward Arnold Fripp, senior forward Brandon St. Louis, and junior guard Sterling Smith are among the top returning players for the Eagles this season. Cephas, who averaged 9.4 points per game, finished third in the MEAC in assists per game (4.1). Smith is the Eagles leading returning scorer (10.9 ppg.). He also led the Eagles with 60 3-pointers.

Chowan Volleyball Tops Lady Bulldogs in Straight Sets
BOWIE, Md. - Bowie State volleyball played a spirited and energetic home opener against Chowan University, but the Hawks were too strong, downing the Lady Bulldogs in straight sets, 15-25, 15-25 and 17-25. The setback spoiled the home opener for the Lady Bulldogs and set the team record at 1-11 overall, 1-4 CIAA and 0-2 in the North.
Sophomore India Mason (New Orleans, La.) led the home team with six kills on 20 attacks while freshman Valerie Taylor (Walkersville, Md.) and sophomore Alexis Fisher (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) added four kills apiece for the Lady Bulldogs.
Bowie State sophomore Yaje Ngundam (Bowie, Md.) contributed three kills and sophomore Brooke Archer-Simpson (Bowie, Md.) supplied a pair of kills in the loss. Archer-Simpson was also responsible for 13 of Bowie State’s 14 assists. Redshirt junior Marissa Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) paced the Lady Bulldogs with eight digs and three service aces, all team highs.
Chowan’s Hawks (8-3, 5-0, 2-0) were led by Melanie Chaussee (Lawrence Kan.) and Jordan Miller (Elizabeth City, .NC.) with 10 kills each. Cindy Ehrich (Fredericksburg, Va.) tallied a team-high eight digs for the Hawks and Allison Smith (Manassas, Va.) recorded a match-high 28 assists.
The Lady Bulldogs return to the court on Monday (September 22nd), when Bowie State plays host to Elizabeth City State at 7 pm in BSU’s A.C. Jordan Arena.

Bowie State Volleyball Struggles Continue in Tri-Match Loses to Goldey-Beacom and Felician
RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Bowie State volleyball team took on Goldey-Beacom and Felician in a non-conference tri-match and lost 3-0 in both matches. Goldey-Beacom defeated the Lady Bulldogs 25-16, 25-8 and 25-15 and lost to Felician by scores of 25-15, 25-11 and 25-10.
In the opening match against Goldey-Beacom, Bowie State (1-10) was held to a -.051 attack percentage compared to the Lightning’s .325 attack percentage.
Junior Yaje Ngundam (Bowie, Md.) and sophomore India Mason (New Orleans, La.) led Bowie State with a half dozen kills each on a combined 33 attacks. Ngundam also tallied seven digs and added one service ace.
Sophomore Amy Harvey (Laurel, Md.) recorded three kills in match one and recorded a team-high 10 assists. Redshirt junior Marissa Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) paced the Lady Bulldogs with a team-high eight digs.
Goldey-Beacom (6-6) defeated Bowie State in straight sets for the second time this season, was led by the Lightning trio of Kadi McCoy, Taylor Moyer and Grace McCarthy. McCoy, Moyer and McCarthy put down nine, eight and seven kills respectively.
Danielle Cipoletti contributed a match-high 25 assists to go along with two service aces, a match-high 12 digs and one blocks assists.
In match two of the tri-match, the Lady Bulldogs tandem of Mason and Ngundam were responsible for four and two kills respectively of the total eight team kills.
Sophomore Brooke Archer-Simpson (Bowie, Md.) accounted for six of Bowie State’s eight assists while Ngundam and redshirt sophomore Alicia Grant (Edgewood, Md.) tied for team-high dig honors with eight apiece.
Host Felician (2-4) tallied 30 kills in the three-set sweep on 84 total attacks with Kayla Gallagher leading the way with a match-high nine digs. Sally Taylor added seven kills and Kristen Keller contributed five kills for the Golden Falcons.
Susie McKeever recorded match-highs of 21 assists and seven service aces for Felician. Paty Giemza topped the Golden Falcons defense with a match-high 15 digs and added two assists and three service aces.
Bowie State University will have little time to rest before returning to action on Sunday (9/21), as they welcome conference foe and Northern Division leading Chowan University to the A.C. Jordan Arena. Match time is set for 1 pm.
