Castle Jumper Helps Bowie State Lady Bulldogs Escape Felician with 70-68 Victory


RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Junior Ashley Castle (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tied for team-high scoring honors with 14 points, two of which included the game winner with 3.3 seconds left in the game to lead visiting Bowie State to a 70-68 road victory over Felician College at Job Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bulldogs have now won all three meetings in the history of the two schools.
 
Bowie State (3-0) led the entire first half and went into halftime with a 41-31 advantage. Castle and graduate student Brooke Miles (Upper Marlboro, Md.) paced the Lady Bulldogs in the first stanza with 10 points each.
 
The Lady Bulldogs led by as much as 11 points in the first half on the strength of shooting 40.5 percent from the floor while holding the Golden Falcons to a 38.1 shooting percentage.
 
Felician (1-5) trailed most of the second half until a Gisell Peguero layup tied the game for the first of five times at 58-all with 6:06remaining in the non-conference contest.

Bowie State led by five at 66-61 with 3:26 left before Felician’s Ashley Morris knotted the score at 66 less than a minute later.

A Peguero jumper with 1:16 left to play shifted the advantage back over to the Golden Falcons only to have Bowie State junior Denver Clyde (Glen Burnie, Md.) stick two free throws to tie the game at 68 with just over a minute left in regulation, setting up the dramatic finish.
 
Miles posted 14 points to go along with a career and game-high 16 rebounds while senior Alessandra Flores Conway and junior Alisha Burley added nine and eight points respectively for the Lady Bulldogs.
 
Felician’s Peguero led the Golden Falcons with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting and added a game-high four assists. Jac’Quel Saunders chipped in 14 points and Keisha Jean-Louis tallied nine points in the loss.
 
Bowie State will travel to Shippensburg University on Sunday, December 1 for a non-conference contest against the Raiders. The Lady Bulldogs then return home for back-to-back games versus Queens (NY) on December 7 at 2 pm and Washington Adventist onDecember 11 at 5 pm before taking time off to celebrate Thanksgiving later in the week.

Bowie State Men’s Basketball Plays Host to Concordia (N.Y.) College on Saturday (Nov. 23)

The Bowie State University men’s basketball team will host the Concordia (NY) College Clippers in the Leonidas S. James Complex (A.C. Jordan Arena) on Saturday, November 23, 2013. Tip-off is 4 p.m. The Bulldogs enter Saturday’s contest with a 2-3 overall record.

The Bulldogs are coming off an exciting 70-69, come from behind road win at Holy Family University on Thursday (11/21) night. Senior Ray Gatling scored the game-winning basket with 4.7 seconds left on the clock and led Bowie State with 16 points. Bowie State is led by Gatling’s 19.2 points per game average, out-rebounding opponents 204 to 188 and averaging 79.4 points per game as a team.

Senior David Golladay scored a career-high 13 points, all in the second half, on 4-of-5 shooting to go along with a career-high five rebounds. Fellow senior Carlos Smith chipped in ten points and a game-high 14 rebounds, his second consecutive double-double of the season.

Concordia, a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference is winless in six games this season. The Clippers are led by Norman Pope with 27.6 points per game average. As a team, Concordia is averaging 70.8 points per game while allowing 89.5 points per game

In the Clippers last game, Pope led the Clippers with a team-high 30 points while adding four rebounds and four assists. Pope has now scored 30 or more points in three of the five games he has played in this season. Kyle Kube added a season-high 13 points while Chris Gordy also scored a season-high with 12 points off the bench in a 91-84 road loss Dominican (N.Y.) on Wednesday, November 20. The Clippers are shooting 39.0 percent from the floor but their opponents are shooting 49.5 percent.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Bowie State University men’s basketball got back on the winning track on Thursday night, defeating Holy Family University by a score of 70-69. Senior Ray Gatling (Oxon Hill, Md.) scored the game-winning basket with 4.7 seconds left on the Campus Center clock.

Senior David Golladay (Upper Marlboro, Md.) scored a career-high 13 points, all in the second half, on 4-of-5 shooting to go along with a career-high five rebounds. Fellow senior Carlos Smith (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in ten points and a game-high 14 rebounds, his second consecutive double-double of the season.

Holy Family is now 3-3 overall, while Bowie State improves to 2-3 overall with the victory.

Albert Munoz paced the host Tigers with a game-high 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Derrick Stewart recorded a double-double of 12 points and ten rebounds and added a pair of blocks. Ervin Ezell and Isaiah Gans contributed 11 points apiece.

The Tigers opened the game with a 5-0 run and held a lead until the 4:08 mark of the first half on a jumper by senior Donald Williams (Hyattsville, Md.), giving BSU their first lead at 19-18. Holy Family took the lead right back on their next trip down the floor and used a 9-4 run to close the first half with a 27-22 advantage. 

Holy Family led 69-68 after a pair of free throws by Golladay pulled Bowie State to within one point of the Tigers' lead with 22 seconds left in regulation.  On the ensuing possession, the Bulldogs forced a key turnover in the Holy Family end of the court giving the visiting team a chance to take the lead with 14 seconds left on the clock.

Bowie State quickly ran down the court and called a timeout with 11 seconds showing.   Out of the timeout, Gatling drove through the lane scoring a layup between Holy Family defenders to give the Bulldogs a 70-69 lead with 4.7 seconds left.

On the inbounds play Holy Family got up the court quickly as Munoz was able to get a last second three-point attempt off before time expired.  However, the shot bounced off the rim as the Tigers last second attempt came up short.

In a game that saw only three different lead changes, the Tigers led majority of the way and by as many as eight points on two separate occasions in the second half.  The later coming with 3:15 remaining in regulation after Munoz drained a three-pointer to make the score 62-54.  The three by Munoz capped an 8-0 run after the game was tied for the first and only time at 54-54.

Both teams struggled from the field in the first half with Bowie State shooting 30.8 percent (8-of26) and Holy Family at 28.9 percent (11-of-38).  However, in the second half the Tigers came out firing shooting 55.6 percent from the floor on 15-of-27 shooting. The difference in the game was at the free throw line as the Bulldogs finished 19-of-22 (86.4 percent) where as Holy Family only converted 12-of-24 from the line.

The Bulldogs return home on Saturday (11/23) to host the Clippers of Concordia (N.Y.) College at 4 pm in BSU’s Leonidas S. James Complex (A.C. Jordan Arena). This game has been designated as BSU Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day. All staff that presents their BSU ID card will be admitted free of charge.

Also known as colon cancer, rectal cancer, and bowel cancer, it stems from out-of-control malignant cell growth in the rectum or colon. This cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world and the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. It’s most often seen in modern countries that enjoy a high standard of living. But even as more and more people fall victim to this disease, there’s good news on the horizon: a new study shows a simple substance known as grape seed extract (GSE) does a bang-up job of halting the growth of colorectal cancer cells. And according to this study, the more vicious the cancer cell growth rate … the more effective grape seed extract is at thwarting it. GSE: The “all-purpose” cancer killer The study came from researchers at the University of Colorado Cancer Center and was published in the journal Cancer Letters. Molly Derry, lead study author, pointed out that they’ve long since known about the power of grape seed extract to selectively target cancer cells. But here’s why the new findings are so interesting. When colorectal cancer cells metastasize and traditional therapies can’t beat them, the cancer cells actually become even more sensitive to GSE treatments. This means we now have a way, as Derry says, “… to selectively target advanced colorectal cancer cells.” Here’s another humdinger: Typically, larger chemotherapy doses are needed to kill later stage cancers. A person suffering from Stage IV colon cancer is going to be treated with much more chemo poison than a person with Stage II colon cancer. But when it comes to treating late-stage cancers with grape seed extract, less is more. Derry was quoted as saying, “It required less than half the concentration of GSE to suppress cell growth and kill 50 percent of stage IV cells than it did to achieve similar results in the stage II cells.” The scientists working on this project believe the key mechanism that allows grape seed extract to do this is the oxidative stress it puts on cancer cells. This prompts the cancer cells to self-destruct, a process known as apoptosis or programmed cell death. But along with that, other bioactive compounds within GSE seem to work together to target the different mutations of the cancer cells. In fact, the more mutations the cancer throws at them, the more effective they become at knocking them out. This is in sharp contrast to conventional treatments, which are constantly “outsmarted” by cancer’s ability to mutate. Grape seed extract works better than chemotherapy because traditional chemo only targets a specific mutation. This is not an effective strategy considering that colorectal cancer cells can have more than 11,000 genetic mutations. So those cells can become resistant to chemotherapy but still remain completely vulnerable to the bioactive compounds in grape seed extract. It appears that GSE can be characterized as a broad-spectrum mutation-targeting chemical – in effect, a “weapon of mass destruction” against cancer cells. Got colon cancer of the worst kind? No problem. A proven natural cure for beating an enemy like colon cancer is fantastic news, to be sure. But perhaps even better is the fact that these findings may prove critical in prompting more natural therapy use for late-stage colon cancer—especially since the burn and poison methods used in allopathic medicine don’t work all that well for older folks suffering from the disease. Colorectal cancer usually hits older people thanks to the cumulative, long-term effects of lifestyle choices (bad diet, lack of exercise) plus the general toll of aging. Few cases are linked to genetics, and too few are cured, especially those that reach Stages III or IV. Early symptoms of colon cancer include constipation, blood in your stool, weight loss, and appetite loss. Older males are the most at risk, as are those who eat a diet heavy with fat, alcohol, and red meat. Smoking and a lack of exercise only make your risk factor higher. Until now, regular screenings (a colonoscopy) were the most effective way to lower your chance of dying from the disease. Most doctors recommend you get screened about once per decade once you hit age 50, and then all the way up until you’re 75. If cancer is found in your colon wall, surgery usually cures it. But if the cancer has spread, chemo tends to be the recommended option. In general, folks who die from colon cancer are the late-stage cases who’ve had the disease spread throughout their body. But incredibly, this is where grape seed extract can make the biggest difference. It works proactively, too… Grape seed extract, as you’ve probably guessed, comes from whole grape seeds. These seeds carry a high level of vitamin E, flavonoids, and linoleic acid, among other things. You’ll typically find it in capsules or tablets of 50 to 100 mg each. Little is known about the effect of long-term grape seed extract consumption. Known side effects include headache, dry scalp, and the occasional bout of dizziness or nausea. By the way, you don’t have to be diagnosed with colon cancer to start reaping the anti-cancer benefits of GSE. You can take it proactively to protect yourself against colorectal cancer and other digestive cancers. Current recommendations from nutrition experts are to supplement with standardized, whole grape seed extract. Aim for between 150 and 250 mg per day. If I had colon cancer I would certainly take at least 250 mg per day, and I’d consult a naturopath about taking higher doses. (Bowie State U) SAAC Presents "Barefoot for Bare Feet" Coed Dodgeball Tournament

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) solicit your support and participation with“Barefoot for Bare Feet” Coed Dodgeball Tournament – Thursday, December 5^th in the Leonidas S. James Complex (A.C. Jordan Arena) from 7:30 pm until 10 pm.  Entry for the event is a pair of tennis shoes or socks OR $1 (Students) and $3 (Non-Students). In order to participate in the event, each participating member MUST DONATE a pair of gently used tennis shoes (see attached flyer). All proceeds from this event go to the Samaritans Feet Organization.
