Bowie State Men's Basketball Post Game Story

BOWIE STATE FALTERS IN 85-72 CONFERENCE OPENING LOSS TO LIVINGSTONE

BOWIE, Md. - Livingstone College (9-1 / 1-0 CIAA) shot 56 percent from the floor in the second half and 24 second points by Jody Hill (Detroit, Mich.) make the difference as Bowie State University drops conference opener 85-72.

“Give credit to Livingstone, but we simply lost focus, especially in the second half”, said Bowie State head coach Darrell Brooks. “We knew Hill was a good shooter coming in, but we had some coverage errors that gave him some good, comfortable looks.”

Bowie State (4-6 / 0-1 CIAA) was led senior Najee White with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds and fellow senior Byron Westmorland with 21 points.  Senior Dameatric Scott fell just short of a double-double, contributing 14 points and nine rebounds.

The Livingstone Blue Bears led only once in the first half (3-2) before Bowie State opened a 12 point lead twice at 24-12 and 26-14. The Blue Bears would not go away, cutting the deficit to 38-34 by halftime. Omar Ford-Bey (Chester, Pa.), Eladio Espinoza (Summit, N.J.) and Mark Thomas (Saginaw, Mo.) led Livingstone with nine points each in the first period.

Westmorland, junior Carlos Smith and White combined for 26 first half points to lead the Bulldogs, but Bowie State committed nine of their season-tying 22 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

Livingstone trimmed the Bowie State lead to 40-39 early in the second half following a pair of free throws by Ford-Bey. A Hill 3-pointer with 12:22 remaining in the game created the only tie at 48-48. The Blue Bears slowed pulled away, opening up a 69-59 double-digit lead with 6:05 left to play and were never threatened after that.

In addition to Hill’s game-high 26 points, Thomas added 17 points, Ford-Bey (15) and Espinoza (12 points). Anthony Welch swatted away a game-high five shots for Livingstone.

Neither team shot well from the charity stripe, with Livingstone making 25-of-41 free throws compared to Bowie State’s 19-of-30 from the free throw line.

When asked about Bowie State’s inability to get stops down the stretch, Brooks said “We’re a full court pressing team, but tonight we didn’t do a good job rotationally”.

The Bulldogs welcome Johnson C. Smith to BSU's A.C. Jordan Arena for a 7:30 pm conference clash on Saturday (January 5).

Bowie State Women's Basketball Post Game Story

KAMMERA JOHNSON CAREER-NIGHT LEADS BOWIE STATE TO 76-61 VICTORY OVER LIVINGSTONE

BOWIE, Md. – Junior transfer Kammera Johnson (Louisburg College) scored a career-high 21 points and added a game-best six assists to lead Bowie State to a 76-61 home conference victory over Livingstone College. The win sets the Lady Bulldogs record at 1-0 in the CIAA (4-5 overall) while the Lady Blue Bears slip to 4-6 (0-1 CIAA).

Junior Brooke Miles came off the bench to add 12 points and the duo of senior Jasmine Jacobs and sophomore Jasmine McIntosh chipped in 11 points each. Miles added a four assists, three rebounds, a block and one steal. McIntosh hit 4-of-6 field goals, which included three 3-pointers, to go along with five rebounds.

“It’s great to start the conference portion of the schedule with a win”, said second-year head coach Renard Smith. “Our game plan was refuse to lose tonight and we did that”!

For Livingstone, Ashley Walker (Washington, D.C.) recorded a team-high 18 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Cierra York (Winston-Salem, N.C.) was the only other Lady Blue Bears player to score in double figures, tallying 13 points, seven rebounds and a team-high four assists.

In Bowie State’s most recent contest, the Lady Bulldogs shot 47.1 percent from the floor, converting 24-of-51 field goal attempts. Of the 24 Bowie State field goals, a season-best 17 were beyond the arc. On the other side of the stat sheet, Livingstone made 20-of-59 from the field (33.9 percent).

Livingstone led 31-29 at intermission, as six players found the scoring column. York topped the charts with 10 points. Kelcyn Manurs (Reston, VA) added seven, while Tiffany Evans (Durham, NC), Ashley Walker (Washington, D.C.) and Jasmine Murray (Washington, D.C.) added four points each. Kendra McKinney (Daleville, Ala.) scored two points in the first 20 minutes.

Livingstone opened the second stanza with a 17-6 run, concluding the flurry on a Evans layup with 15:59 remaining. Walker was personally responsible for 10 points in the spurt, as the Lady Blue Bears took a 48-35 advantage.

Bowie State remained calm and regained the lead (59-58) for good at the 8:03 mark on a 3-pointer by McIntosh. Six of the eight Lady Bulldogs field goals during the run were of the 3-point variety. Bowie State pushed the lead to 10 points (68-58) on another McIntosh 3-point field goal at the 4:22 mark and cruised to the victory the rest of the way.

Livingstone dominated in the paint, holding a 28-6 advantage. In addition to BSU’s season-highs in assists, the Lady Bulldogs set season-highs in field goal percentage (47.1), 3-point field goal percentage (63.0) and assists (18).

Bowie State returns to the court Saturday (January 5), hosting the Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University at 5:30 pm.

From the desk of Lee Euler, Editor and Publisher
From wheelchair to dance floor:
Florence’s cancer breakthrough
Florence, a young cancer patient, SCREAMED in pain because of the tumors growing in her spine. Even though she was confined to a wheelchair, she heard about a cancer breakthrough and made up her mind to travel and get it. She went to one of the few clinics that offer this little-known therapy. Believe it or not, she got immediate pain relief and came home dancing and jumping. . .
