11 Foods You Should Eat to Boost the Immune System

11 Foods You Should Eat to Boost the Immune System
Regardless of the time of year, we are constantly at battle with germs. They are essentially around us at all times. Not only can we not see germs and harmful bacteria, but many times we don’t even know our body is attacking those foreign substances in our body because it does so without us feeling a thing. The unfortunate part is when our immune system is compromised and can’t effectively kill the foreign substance – ultimately causing us to become sick.

While everyone is out stocking up on medicine and clearing the shelves, what they fail to realize is that there are certain foods you should be purchasing and eating to boost the immune system. There are numerous foods that help boost the immune system and below are some of my favorites you should consider picking up on your next trip to the grocery store.

1. Spinach

If you are looking to boost the immune system and kick it into high gear, you need to fuel it with the necessary micronutrients. Raw spinach is a fantastic addition to anyone’s diet as it is loaded with vitamin C and antioxidants. Simply grab a handful and use it as a salad or toss a handful in the blender with your protein shake.

2. Sunflower Seeds

No, sunflower seeds aren’t just for baseball players. In fact, they’re slammed with the powerful antioxidant vitamin E which is incredibly important for immunity. Vitamin E can help boost the immune system as well as help keep it functioning properly. Eat them as a snack or toss some in a delicious salad.

3. Citrus Fruits

This should come as no surprise, but citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruit to name a few are slammed full of vitamin C. What does everyone say you need to help boost the immune system and ward off sicknesses? Vitamin C. Your body does not store vitamin C in the body, so you need to make sure you are consuming citrus fruits on a daily basis to ensure you’re getting your daily recommended intake. You can use them as a snack, in yogurt, or in a green leafy salad.

4. Broccoli

Yes, broccoli is extremely helpful in your attempt to boost the immune system. And no, this didn’t get thrown on the list to try and get you to eat more greens – which you should be doing regularly anyway. But the nice thing about broccoli is that it contains vitamins A, C, and E. Essentially, it's like taking everything we mentioned above from a key micronutrient standpoint and packed it into one green vegetable. Broccoli should be a "must-have" on your grocery list.

5. Red Bell Peppers

Think loading up on oranges is your best bet for taking in adequate amounts of vitamin C? Think again. If you want to boost the immune system, grab yourself some red bell peppers. When you compare red bell peppers to the citrus fruits mentioned above, red bell peppers have twice the amount of immunity-boosting vitamin C. Red bell peppers can be used as a snack, in salads, in sandwiches, and anywhere you want a little extra flavor.

6. Greek Yogurt

If you want to stay healthy and boost the immune system, pay close attention to your gut health. The healthy bacteria found in your gut can help you fight off bacteria entering your body. Want to keep the good bacteria healthy and functioning optimally? Then you need to feed them through the use of probiotics. Greek yogurt provides a helpful dose of active and live cultures to support proper gut health while also aiding in boosting immunity through its vitamin D content.

7. Button Mushrooms

Are you a fan of mushrooms? If so, eat more. Mushrooms are a great way to boost the immune system thanks to the vitamin B content, riboflavin, selenium, and polysaccharides. Toss them in a salad, eat them as a snack, top your pizza with them, or put them on top of your favorite protein sources such as chicken or steak.

8. Watermelon

Who doesn’t love watermelon? It’s sweet. It’s delicious. It’s low in calories. And it can help boost the immune system. Can you ask for anything more? Watermelon is full of vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, and glutathione which can keep your immune system functioning optimally.

9. Garlic

Whether you’re fighting an illness or Dracula himself, garlic can help boost the immune system. Garlic contains a compound called allicin that has immune-boosting properties. You can add garlic to many different dishes to not only add a little extra flavor to a meal but also provide you with some helpful health benefits as well.

10. Nuts

Grab your nuts! Almonds, cashews, whatever you prefer! Nuts are full of vitamins like C and E that can help boost the immune system and keep it healthy. The great thing about nuts is that they have a variety of uses. A handful can be used as a healthy snack option in the middle of the day. You can put some nuts in your salad to boost the protein and healthy fat content (not to mention add some flavor). You can even add them to your yogurt (which also made our list) or oatmeal.

11. Shellfish

I saved the most unusual for last. Not many people would think that shellfish are a good way to boost the immune system, but they are. Why is that? It’s due to the high zinc concentration in things like oysters, clams, crabs, and mussels. Zinc plays a key role in the health and function of our immune system. Adding shellfish to your weekly nutrition plan not only keeps things fresh and interesting but comes with the additional immunity benefits.

On Aggression

By: Alex Watterman

I have always wondered why there is so much aggression in our world. This is really an issue of the day, because progressive increase of aggressive, violent actions has become evident for the last decade. Such socially dangerous manifestations as cruelty, vandalism, violence are closely connected with the notion of aggression and can be caused by internal (personal) as well as by external (social) factors.

In order to understand exactly the essence of this phenomenon, to understand whether people are aggressive by birth or it is just a pernicious influence of economic, political instability or of mass media, advertising, etc., I decided to investigate causes of aggression from the point of view of different theoretical approaches.
Nobody knows exactly if aggression is an innate or acquired phenomenon, but many agree in the fact that aggression is a type of physical or verbal behavior directed at doing harm to another human being.
S. Freud as a representative of psychoanalytical approach regards aggression as an instinctive, innate behavior, as a conflict between consciousness and unconsciousness, as one of the means of person’s psychological defense. Lorenz (1966) also states that aggression came from innate instinct of struggle for survival. He thinks that every person has this instinct and therefore he is predisposed to aggressive behavior.
Opposite point of view is represented by Berkowitz (1970) who regards aggressive behavior as a situational one. He connects it with another phenomenon – frustration that causes aggressive reactions by forming negative affect. Bandura (1983) defines aggression as acquired behavior that is formed during the process of socialization by observing corresponding manner of action and social confirmation.
Representative of humanistic approach – Rogers – explains aggression as a forced response of a human on the limitation of his freedom.

Despite the fact that there are a lot of scientific theories and researches of the phenomenon of aggression in modern social psychology, there is not enough in-depth study of many aspects of human aggression.
I can agree or disagree with theoretical approaches above-mentioned, but what I cannot deny is that aggressive tendencies, violent actions, abusive manners increase daily, especially among adolescents.
Increase of aggression in adolescent environment is one of the most important social problems. This age group is characterized by a great number of conflicts, demonstrations of aggression, violence towards coevals, juvenile delinquency. Here, I completely agree with those who find causes of aggression in family, in methods of upbringing. Because I think that families with problems, where violence, undeserved offences, feeling of hatred, wounding are usual processes, children are inclined to demonstrate aggression most of all.
According to Olweus (1980) there is a strong correlation between styles of family upbringing and adolescent aggression. He shows that parents’ negative attitude towards children, educational methods involving strength provoke children’s aggressive behavior. If there is constant abuse, violence in the family, it can cause children’s corresponding behavior towards others. As a result children are rejected by society. They are characterized by low self-appraisal and poor results. And they have nothing more to do as to identify themselves with coevals characterized by deviant behavior.
Another factor of adolescent aggression emerges here. As it was proved by a lot of psychologists, children usually can adopt different models of behavior – acceptable ones as well as unacceptable – in the process of interaction with their coevals. Communicating with aggressive children, adolescents also acquire habits of aggressive behavior, because usually words and actions of coevals as well as of members of adolescent’s families have a strong impact on formation of his aggressive behavior.
In addition to family and coevals’ influence, there is a significant pressure of mass media on adolescents’ consciousness. Its effects of demonstrations of violence in movies and television on children’s consciousness are pernicious and really dangerous. Certain investigations show that watching violence and aggression on television causes increase of aggressive behavior, besides it decreases people’s receptivity of aggression and distorts their conception of reality.
As we can see, formation of aggressive behavior is compound and many – sided process, that includes many factors. Aggressive behavior is formed by the influence of family, coevals and mass media.
Nevertheless, there is another important factor that influences aggressive behavior – personal features, individual aims and dispositions. It was proved that ordinary people can demonstrate aggressive actions, if they are characterized by irritability, tendency to see other’s hostility, fear of public opinion, etc.
Speaking about those who demonstrate aggression very often, I should point out two kinds of them: the first group has low self-control and the second one has higher self-control. Their aggressive models of behavior often can cause extreme or even fatal results.
In a word, despite the fact that situational factors have a strong impact on aggressive and violence demonstrations, there are a number of family, educational, social and personal factors that can cause aggressive behavior.

Sorrow Not!

The redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and [grief] shall flee away.
Isaiah 51:11

Did you know that as a believer you’ve been redeemed from the curse of grief and sorrow by the blood of Jesus Christ? You don’t have to put up with them any more than you have to put up with sin or sickness or disease.
God started teaching me about this personally several months before my mother went home to be with Him in August 1988. Every time He’d show me something about it, I’d put it into practice. (You ought to do that with anything God is teaching you. Start practicing it now, and you can walk in it when the time comes!)
So, eight and a half months before my mother left, I began standing against grief and sorrow. I made a decision to “sorrow not.” Immediately the devil began to attack my emotions.
But I’d say, “No. I won’t receive that. I take authority over these feelings in Jesus’ Name. I’ve given my body as a sacrifice well-pleasing unto the Lord, and I won’t partake of anything but His joy.” Then I’d start speaking the Word and praising out loud.
I went through three rugged days of resisting until those sorry spirits were gone.
What I’m telling you is this: You’re going to have to stand against grief and sorrow. It doesn’t belong to you. It’s not from your heavenly Father. You may have to walk the floor all night long. But instead of worrying and crying, walk the floor and quote the Word until that heavy spirit leaves and the joy of the Lord comes.
Remember who you are. You’re the one who shall obtain gladness and joy. You’re the one sorrow and grief shall flee away from. You are the redeemed!

My Sheep hear My Voice: How to hear from God and Prosper?

By: Joseph Ho

You may wonder what was it that motivated me to want to hear his voice. Well, it’s sad but true, we do not seek God until we need him desperately. For me, I had 5 crises that happened to me in the year 1997, I needed a miracle in short. I found God and he spoke to me. God also gave me confirmations through scriptures that he is the one who spoke to me. This gave me peace and assurance, he is a good God, and we should not fear that we will hear a different voice. I was elated, surprised and very excited about this new found counselor. Then, I read that God can do anything even impossible things, and that is when I decided that God can speak to me in anyways he chose. The bible says in John 10:27, "My sheep hears my voice; I know them and they follow Me." and again in John 10:3 – 5, "The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and he sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice."

Here is a simply analogy, I want you to reflect on your natural father; how do you recognize your father’s voice when he calls you on the phone. What is it about the voice that makes you recognize that it is your true father on the other line? First, it was the tone of his voice, and second it is the way he uses certain words, and thirdly, it is the way he speaks and his unique speech, fourth, it was the historical relationship with him that he can use certain events to jolt your memories all these combined together, gave you an idea that it is truly your father who is speaking to you. So have no fear that you will hear a wrong voice, we have a way to know if God is the one speaking to us.

Finally, be blessed in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, and my prayers will accompany you as you seek to hear his voice. He promised me through the bible verse: Isaiah 32:3, "Then the eyes of those who see will no longer be closed, and the ears of those who hear will listen. Then the mind of the rash will know and understand, and the stammering tongue will be fluent and clear." Let your ears and eyes be opened as you seek to hear from him, and may he also cause you to hear, and see what goodness he has prepared for those who seek him. Finding him is finding an eternal treasure, for if God is for you, who can be against you. Whatever may be your situation, if God speaks to you, you will find a second chance and a way in the wilderness and he will lead you out of your trouble, I know because I came out of the wilderness because I hear his voice and like a sheep I followed the voice of the Shepherd and I came out of my pits. Truthfully, what have you got to lose? Go check out this book which was created to serve those who sincerely want to find a connection to the throne of God.  Get Athletic

For many lifters, appearance will always be king. They want to get big, get lean, and look a certain way to make a certain impression. That's their goal, and more power to them.
But more and more these days, you see athletic training creeping into mainstream training. Why? Part of it may be all of us strength coaches out there quibbling over who's got "go" and who's all "show," but there's an even more fundamental reason.
Explosive, athletic training is really fun.
If you've followed the other three phases of this year-long plan and have built strength, gained size, and gotten lean, then a phase where you focus on pure athleticism is a reward you've earned. If you do it right and follow this plan, you'll reap the benefits of everything else you've done this year. You'll also be better prepared after this phase to get even stronger, more muscular, and leaner. That's the beauty of athletic training.
Here's what you'll focus on in this training cycle to up your level of "go," plus the program to take you to the next level.

1. Elasticity and Reactivity

While simply grinding out quality reps with decent weights and doing conditioning is great, there's one element of athleticism that tends to be overlooked in the majority of programming: elasticity.
Have you ever watched a great basketball, football, or volleyball player effortlessly jump into the air? Sure, they're strong. But they are also incredibly elastic as well. They seem to fly effortlessly over the ground.
As we transition into our athleticism-training block, you're going to put an emphasis on getting that elasticity. We're going to do low-level plyos and "reactive" work, along with various jumps to prime your body for power.

2. Speed Over Short Distances

Another key element of athleticism is the ability to run fast. If you just groaned, trust me on this one! I don't care what your training goals are: muscle, strength, fat loss, or just health. Sprinting can help you get there, and honestly, most people really enjoy adding some sprinting in their training sessions after the initial lung-punch.
But here's the thing: You shouldn't go out and start running 40- or 60-yard dashes on Day 1 unless you want to see how miserable it is to rehab a hamstring strain. When you start sprinting on this program, you'll start with short distances first. Simple 5- and 10-yard sprints may not look or feel too taxing, but they prepare the hamstrings for the intensity of max velocity running down the line.
In fact, as you'll see in the program, I don't even want you to sprint for the first month. Instead, you'll start with low-level plyos first, then move into sprints in the ensuing training blocks. This will ensure that when you get back into longer-distance sprinting in the second and third months, your hamstrings will be up to the task.

3. Conditioning That Is Power-Focused, Not Fatigue-Focused

When it comes to conditioning, most people assume that if you aren't on the floor puking at the end of your session, you're somehow doing it wrong. This is what many of us experienced in our youth, and it's a hard mindset to shake—especially if you just wrapped up a fat-loss cycle.
But in athletics, this couldn't be further from the truth. Instead, most sports—think football, basketball, soccer, and all racquet sports—are what are known as "alactic-aerobic" sports. These activities have periods of high-intensity work, where you rely on your alactic or phosphagen system to produce energy for short periods of time, generally less than 10 seconds. This is interspersed with longer periods of rest, sometimes as long as 60-90 seconds.
Initially, the goal of your conditioning will be all-out speed and power, with full recoveries in between. As the program goes on, you'll slowly start to extend the work periods, while reducing the rest periods to make it more "game-like."

Program Overview

Athletes need multiple physical qualities to be successful. The best of them blend speed, strength, power, and conditioning to dominate their competition on the field, court, or pitch. This program is meant to cover all those bases.
The first section of your workout is power-focused. Here, we address elasticity, upper-body power via medicine-ball throws, and lower-body power via jumps.
In the strength section, the emphasis is on simply getting stronger. This is why the first lift each day is a big-bang, compound exercise.
From there, however, the emphasis shifts to stability, control, and building structural balance throughout the body. Whether it's single-leg/split-stance training, upper-body pressing/pulling, or ab work, the goal is to make you a more efficient athlete.
Last but not least, being fast and explosive while fatigued is a crucial element of athletic development. We'll start with long work:rest ratios this month (so that power and explosiveness are maximized), then tighten these up as the months go on.

Get Fit without a Gym - Advantages of Working Out at Home

By: Best Homeworkout

While everyone knows the importance of exercise in general, a lot of people don’t seem to find time to develop a daily fitness routine. They don’t have time to drive to a fitness center on a regular basis. Or they have other reasons why they can’t go to the gym. The good news is that you don’t need to go to the gym to stay fit. The alternative way is to work out at home. You can do your personal fitness routine while at home through the use of different fitness techniques. Below are just some of the benefits of working out at home.

Save Time and Money

One of the advantages of working out at home is that you will be able to save a lot of time and money. Going to the gym means you need to get dressed, drive or commute to the gym, and change into gym clothes. Then after the workout, you need to do everything again in reverse. More often than not, this ritual takes more time than the actual gym session.

You also need to factor in the gym membership fee. The costs are much more expensive because it includes activities and features that you don’t need such as group classes. More often than not, you only spend a couple of hours lifting weights each week.

Flexible Schedule

Another benefit of working out at home is that you can do so whenever you want to. You don’t need to show up at a specific time at the gym for a workout class. You can do whatever workout routine you want to do, any time of the day.

Be More Focused

When working out at home, you will be able to push yourself to the limits and be more focused. There will be no distractions, unlike when you do your exercises at the gym. And you don’t need to wait for someone to finish using the gym equipment. You will not feel rushed or be self-conscious. That way you will be able to concentrate on the movements to get maximum results.

It is easy to plan your own workout at home. Most workouts done at home don’t need equipment. You just need to have enough space to do your home work out safely. The ideal workout at home must be performed in a circuit, which means that you need to do one set with rest in between. Each circuit must be done three to four times or as many as you can within 20 minutes.

As you can see, working out at home can be advantageous to you in so many ways. You don’t need to leave your home to improve and maintain your fitness level. And the best thing about it is that you can do the exercises whenever you have some free time.

Cancer is Curable, All You Need is Knowledge

By: Alan Wighton

There is no great mystery to the disease of modern civilization called cancer. It’s our number 2 killer and is in a large part a nightmare we have brought upon ourselves by the way we are now living. We are in fact poisoning ourselves to death with our artificial food our sedentary lifestyle and other lifestyle factors. All cancers are curable but you have to deal with the reasons that caused it in the first place.

We all believe there are only three ways to treat cancer but that is not true. There are certainly three ways that have a limited ability to remove some of the growths but they are not necessary cures. There are other ways that are far more effective because they deal with the cause or the reasons why it first grew but unfortunately no one can profit from them.

All cancers are curable but only by natural means. Natural ways to rid the body of cancer means finding the reasons why the growths first appeared and removing those reasons. That will allow the body to self-heal through our immune system. This system works for all cancers and works for everyone because we all have an immune system. A cancer growth is only a sign that something is wrong within the body so does it makes sense to weaken the body further with harsh treatments.

The cancer industry is keeping us submissive by suppressing information about true cures and persecuting anyone who dares strays from the 3 big money orientated treatments of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. While they are very good at applying these treatments, these treatments won’t prevent it from spreading or returning again because the growths are only the symptoms and not the problem.

I know it’s a very brave choice to go against traditional medicine but true cures means dealing with the cause and that’s something our medical specialists don’t do. Our medical system is very good at diagnosing cancer but their treatments years ago were ineffective and they are still ineffective today.

If your cancer is serious the changes that are necessary won’t be easy. Cancer is a serious disease and the treatment will need to be a full time commitment. Also there is no point in blaming a misplaced gene for a disease of modern western civilization. We have significant control over any bad genes we may have and that control is based on what we put in our mouths, exercise, sunshine, fresh air and adequate rest. That is, the way we should be living.

Of course using food and other lifestyle factors as medicine usually affects the body much more slowly that drugs. But in the end it is a much safer and more thorough option. It works by removing the causes of the illness, where as most drugs merely relieve the outer symptoms. Don’t forget that your body strives to heal itself automatically every single day. What you need to do to assist it is to remove the barrier that’s been stopping it from healing.

Exercise needs to be addressed as it is crucial when fighting cancer. Any cancer is a result of an immune system that didn’t stop wayward cells in the body from dividing so your first priority is to strengthen the immune system and you do that with some exercise everyday. The immune system needs muscular activity to function properly and any form of exercise is beneficial. Simply walking or aerobics are both very beneficial.

Learn about cancer, search for information, and don’t put your precious life in somebody else’s hands. There is a wealth of information available today but you must be very selective in what you adopt. Any information on healing the body of cancer must revolve around natural living. That is consuming fresh food that’s been unmolested by man, a little exercise everyday, a sensible amount of sunshine for the important vitamin D we gain from it, adequate rest and sleep and be aware of the many chemicals we unwittingly use that do cause us harm.
