Game Planner Pro takes football coaching preparation to a whole new level. Highlights of Sierra Canyon's (CA) 26-7 win over Westlake (CA) in its season opener.
By Jacob H. Pollon Sierra Canyon Athletics Dept. Staff Writer WESTLAKE VILLAGE —
The third time was the charm for the Sierra Canyon football team. After
losing to Westlake in 2017 and in a thriller in 2018, Sierra Canyon
finally turned the tables on the Warriors for a 26-7 victory in a
nonleague season opener Friday night. “That’s a great
program we just beat and one we have a lot of respect for,” Sierra
Canyon coach Jon Ellinghouse said. “It’s nice to get the win. We came up
short a couple times. We kept at it and kept getting better. It was our
turn tonight.”
A close game for
the first 24 minutes turned into a lopsided affair in the second half.
Clinging to a 3-0 lead, J.D. Sumlin took over in the third quarter.
Sumlin carried six times for 75 yards and found the end zone on a
12-yard run on the first drive of the second half. The touchdown gave
the Trailblazers a 10-0 lead and more importantly set the tone for the
half. “I just followed my linemen and they did a good job blocking,” Sumlin said. “We played with fire. We just kept going.” Sumlin finished
with 159 yards on 12 carries and two scores. Sumlin led seven ball
carries who rushed for 282 yards on 35 carries. Most of the damage came
in the second half. A welcomed bright spot was sophomore Jason Jones,
Jr., who gained 48 yards on six carries. Jones an emerging two-way
threat at linebacker.
After Josh Bryan
kicked his second 25-yard field goal for a 13-0 lead, Sierra Canyon put
the game to rest with a D.J. Harvey 56-yard catch-and-run touchdown from
junior signal caller Chayden Peery. Peery finished 6 of 18 for 106
yards. Sumlin later added a short 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. “It’s the first
time we have ever beaten Westlake and we are going to enjoy it,” Peery
said. “I have a lot of friends over there. It’s good to beat them. Carson Kuhl led
Westlake with 144 receiving yards on nine catches. Marco Siderman
completed 12 of 29 passes for 167 yards but was intercepted twice. The only score for the Warriors came when Dane Reed scored a from a yard out to trim a 20-point deficit. Sierra Canyon rolled up 427 yards of offense. Westlake mustered 215 yards, only 48 rushing. Sierra Canyon’s
defense was led by Oliver Hanlon and D’Shawn Jones. Each had one
interception. A player to watch is sophomore Deshun Harris who had
several tackles for loss.

Violence in Media By: Brigitte Meier In the news, we hear and see an increasing number of reports about
violence among children. This goes from rude fights on the playground to
armed incidents in schools that result in injuries or even casualties. Now
asking ourselves where this behavior is originated, we quickly come to
media as a scapegoat: TV violence, computer games and the Internet.
Often we lack overview of what our children experience while dealing
with these influences.
And there lies the root problem. Various
scientist groups have tried to prove the influence of visual violence on
children's behavior. There has been proof and counter-proof - so what
we can conclude from this is that the connection between observed
violence and violent behaviour depends on more circumstances than can be
applied in a experimental environment. An observation that we
can make ourselves is that children tend to imitate behavior. Aside
from what's experienced in media, they're influenced by their parents,
their friends and idols. If we are realistic, we have to admit
that as soon as our children start going to school, we lose overview on
their experiences and are often astonished or shocked about the new
ideas they're coming up with. Now here comes the parent's part. The fact
that our children are going to school doesn't mean they're grown-up and
their character is stabilized. Trend and group force are strong against
the learned attitudes and behaviour patterns from childhood, so we need
to stay in touch with our children and try to understand what's on
their minds. It's far too easy to say that a child's violent behavior is caused by media. That's only an excuse, because this way
parents don't have to blame themselves for neglecting their duty of
education. For sure there is a negative influence of visually
explicit violence to a child's mind. But what influence it is, if our
child is considering it "cool", following possibly their friend's
attitude towards it, or if it's scared or even repelled, that's up to us
to teach. Parents have to guide their children with their experiences,
and that includes violence, no matter where experienced. So take
your time to share the experience, show real interest and add your
opinion. Avoid prohibition as much as possible, because that will just
make it much more interesting. For example, if you ban your child from
seeing a popular, violent cartoon series, it will probably see it anyway
- with a friend or when you're not there. But with simply banning it,
you stripped yourself of the chance to influence the conclusions your
child will draw - surely it won't consult you afterwards regarding the
forbidden. And, as with all other things, be a paradigm - if you
present verbal or even physical violence in your family, then you don't
have to be surprised if your child copies that behavior. Brigitte Meier is an occasional author for E-nterests.com. Find some interesting travel related articles here too.
“But now you have been united
with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have
been brought near to him through the blood of Christ” (Ephesians 2:13,
NLT).
Accepting what Jesus did for
us on the cross restores the relationship between God and man that was
broken when Adam and Eve sinned. Being born again means we’re no longer
isolated from the Father.
Boldness is one of the favorites! This highly-charged and hilarious

If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered.
John 15:6
If
I were to ask you to make a list of a hundred things you need to do to
please the Lord today, you could do it, couldn’t you? In fact, you
probably have so many spiritual “dos” and “don’ts” cluttering up your
mind that you’d hardly know where to start. But you can relax. I’m
not going to suggest you make a list of them. Instead, I’m going to
help you simplify things by giving you only one: Abide in Jesus. The
one thing you’re truly responsible for is your union with Him. If you
keep your union and fellowship with Him intact, everything else will be
taken care of.
“But Gloria, I’m facing some big problems right
now. My life’s turned upside down. I’m so rushed I don’t know whether
I’m coming or going. I don’t have time to fellowship with the Lord
today.” That’s when you need to do it the most! You need to
maintain your union with the Lord particularly when the storms of life
come. I know that’s often not easy to do. Whether the storm is a
sickness in your body or financial problems or family strife, the
temptation will be to settle your attention and your mind on that
problem. You won’t even want to think about anything else. That’s
what the devil planned on. That’s the reason he sent that storm in the
first place. To distract you from fellowshiping with God. To draw your
attention away from your union with Him. Don’t fall into the
devil’s trap. Instead, keep your thoughts and affections trained on the
Lord. As you do that, the force of faith will begin to flow out of you.
And that flow will repel every form of darkness. It will bring you in
triumph through every storm. Fellowship with Jesus today.
