Straddle Splits - Stretch and Splits Tips By: Jerry Hatter
Straddle splits can be difficult to
achieve many people find that they have a sticking point that they
think they can't break through. This article addresses a number
of emails I have received from people who are experiencing a "Sticking
Point" on their journey to ultimate flexibility. They are fighting feelings of: I am never going to get this - maybe I am just not flexible - I'm too old - I'mtoo tall - I'm too big... ... and any other defeatist thought processes which enter our minds at these "sticking points". This month I've put together a quick video which can certainly help
with those through the sticking points of achieving straddle splits: See below. The sad reality is,
most people give up when they don't get the results they think they
should have in the time frame they think they should have it in. The second most popular question I get asked is "how long will it take
me to achieve full straddle splits". This is sometimes a hard question
to answer. It is the same as someone asking how long will it take them
to run 100 yards in under 10 seconds or how long will it take them to
squat 500 pounds or how long will it take them to perform at an elite
level in any chosen discipline. The truth is, is takes time and
persistence. The amount of time is commensurate to the amount of time
allocated to perfecting the discipline. The trouble here is, that
in society, we are conditioned to have everything instantly. You know:
three minutes to the new body, the diet pill which makes you lean
overnight. We have instant coffee, instant noodles, microwave meals,
instant gratification and this "instant everything mentality"has
affected the very thought process of everything we do or set out to
achieve. Persistence and stickability has been lost in a three minute world. Here is an extract from one of my favorite books. Napoleon Hill's Think
& Grow Rich . It gives an account of a true story of someone who
quit just before victory. It was written many years ago but still rings
true today in every arena of life: THREE FEET FROM GOLD One of the most common causes of failure is the habit of quitting when
one is overtaken by temporary defeat. Every person is guilty of this
mistake at one time or another. An uncle of R. U. Darby was caught
by the gold fever in the gold-rush days, and went west to DIG AND GROW
RICH. He had never heard that more gold has been mined from the brains
of men than has ever been taken from the earth. He staked a claim and
went to work with pick and shovel. The going was hard, but his lust for
gold was definite.
After weeks of labor, he was rewarded by the
discovery of the shining ore. He needed machinery to bring the ore to
the surface. Quietly, he covered up the mine, retraced his footsteps to
his home in Williamsburg, Maryland, told his relatives and a few
neighbors of the strike". They got together money for the needed machinery, had it shipped. The uncle and Darby went back to work the mine. The first car of ore was mined, and shipped to a smelter. The returns
proved they had one of the richest mines in Colorado! A few more cars of
that ore would clear the debts. Then would come the big killing in
profits. Down went the drills! Up went the hopes of Darby and
Uncle! Then something happened! The vein of gold ore disappeared! They
had come to the end of the rainbow, and the pot of gold was no longer
there! They drilled on, desperately trying to pick up the vein again -
all to no avail. Finally, they decided to QUIT. They
sold the machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars, and took the
train back home. Some junk, men are dumb, but not this one! He called
in a mining engineer to look at the mine and do a little calculating.
The engineer advised that the project had failed, because the owners
were not familiar with fault lines. His calculations showed that the
vein would be found JUST THREE FEET FROM WHERE THE DARBYS HAD STOPPED
DRILLING! That is exactly where it was found! The "Junk" man took millions of dollars in ore from the mine, because he knew enough to seek expert counsel before giving up. Before success comes in any mans life, he is sure to meet with much
temporary defeat, and, perhaps, some failure. When defeat (or what
appears to be defeat) overtakes a man, the easiest and most logical
thing to do is to QUIT. That is exactly what the majority of people do. The greatest success often comes just one step beyond the point at
which defeat seems to have overtaken. Failure is a trickster with a keen
sense of irony and cunning. It takes great delight in tripping one when
success is almost within reach. Persistence is a major key in
every success story. Flexibility, speed, coordination, endurance,
balance, diet and a fit, lean, healthy body is a journey to a
destination with bumps along the way...keep going and you will achieve
your dreams. Here is a quick video to help you along the way to pushing past your own sticking point in achieving straddle splits.
In this clip from “Eastern Medicine: Journey Through ASIA!”, Ty
interviews Jae Lee to talk about the roles of calcium imbalance and the
p53 gene in fighting cancer. Watch the full episode here: [http://bit.ly/buy-eastern-medicine]. If you don’t have the right balance of calcium, cell communication
breaks down, resulting in chaos. This chaos is where cancer happens, and
can often be the result of either too much calcium or not enough. But
bringing in a small amount of calcium ion can restore that balance,
leading to natural healing. Watch the whole clip as Ty travels through Singapore to learn just how
important calcium ion can be for fighting cancer and kickstarting the
body’s immune response. Have you ever heard of the p53 gene? Listen to cancer expert Jae Lee
explain the critical role that this gene plays in tumor suppression and
apoptosis (cancer cell death). Inactivation of p53 functions is an
almost universal feature of human cancer cells. And calcium ion may just
be the key to unlocking this powerful, natural gene to fight cancer. Want to watch the entire episode? Check it out here: [http://bit.ly/buy-eastern-medicine].
In the summer of 2018, we traveled through Japan, Taiwan, Philippines,
Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and India. Asia is the birthplace of
natural medicine with records as old as the 3rd century BCE showing the
use of specific natural remedies. Remarkably, we still use some of them
today! Over 60 experts, medical doctors, herbalists, and cancer
survivors tell us what they did, how they did it, and what their results
were in “Eastern Medicine: Journey Through ASIA.”
This unannounced final video in the series runs parallel to Part II, but
rather than head back to the station with Justin Jorgens, in Part III
we stick around the scene to collect evidence and check in with the

Mental health is as important as
physical health. Still, millions of Americans suffer with various types
of mental illness and mental health problems, such as social anxiety,
obsessive compulsive disorder, addiction to drugs and alcohol, and
personality disorders. Mental illness and psychological disorders have
good treatment options with medications, psychotherapy, or other
treatments. Mental health concerns everyone. It affects our
ability to cope with and manage change, life events and transitions such
as bereavement or retirement. All human beings have mental health
needs, no matter what the state of their psyche. This book is written
specifically for those who want to have an introduction to mental
health, mental illness and mental health problems. It is written in
simple language from a person that is curious about the subject and
wants to share with you his research. My curiosity about what
makes certain people successful, drove me into the road of mental
health. I am not an expert in the subject of mental illness ad
treatments, thus before any actions to self-treat or self-diagnose your
mental health status you should consult with a qualified physician who
can properly diagnose and treat any potential mental illnesses. What
became clear to me is that there is more to good health than just a
physically healthy body: a healthy person should also have a healthy
mind. A person with a healthy mind should be able to think clearly,
should be able to solve the various problems faced in life, should enjoy
good relations with friends, colleagues at work and family, and should
feel spiritually at ease and bring happiness to others in the community.
Why should you be concerned about mental illness? As
mentioned earlier, our mental health affect how we perceive many aspects
of our lives. It is an integral part of our whole health. There are
many reasons why you need to be concerned about mental illnesses.: • Because they affect us all. It is estimated that one in five of all
adults will experience a mental health problem in their lifetime. •
Because they are a major public health burden. Studies from nearly
every corner of the world show that as much as 40% of all adults
attending general health care services are suffering from some kind of
mental illness. • Because they are very disabling. Even though the
popular belief is that mental illnesses are less serious than physical
illness, they do in fact produce severe disability. They can also cause
death, as a result of suicide and accidents.
The World Health Report from the World Health Organization in 2001 found that four out of the ten most disabling conditions in the world were mental illnesses.
Depression was the most disabling disorder, ahead of anemia, malaria
and all other health problems. • Because mental health services
are very inadequate. Specialists spend most of their time caring for
people who suffer from "severe mental disorders" (‘psychoses’). These
are quite rare, but are also the very diseases that the community
associates with mental illness. Most people with the much commoner types
of mental health problems, such as depression or alcohol problems,
would not consult a mental health specialist. • Because mental
illness leads to stigma. Most people with a mental health problem would
never admit to it. Those with a mental illness are often discriminated
against by the community and even their own family. • Because
mental illness can be treated with simple, relatively inexpensive
methods. This is the good news! It is true that many mental illnesses
cannot be ‘cured’. However, many physical illnesses, such as cancers,
diabetes, high blood pressure and rheumatoid arthritis, are also not
curable. Yet, much can be done to improve the quality of life of those
who suffer these conditions and the same applies to mental illness. It is important to understand mental health so we can help ourselves
and our loved ones. The stigma often associated with the many forms of
mental illnesses is very real. For example, many people with bipolar
disorder or other mental illnesses are afraid to share their condition
with other people for fear of ridicule or judgment. The stigma is so
real in fact many will avoid telling friends or family of their mental
condition. Many people with bipolar disorder face stigma and discomfort
from well-meaning friends and family members that don't really
understand bipolar disorder. It is common for patients with bipolar
disorder to feel misunderstood. Unfortunately even many health care
providers carry with them a biased attitude toward bipolar patients.
Many have a difficult time focusing on the real reason a person is in
their office. Instead they focus on the mental health issue. Here are some small steps patients and family members can take to help overcome the stigma associated with mental illness: * Always accept your condition for what it is. * Never attempt to hide your condition for fear that others will be un-accepting or misunderstand you. * Educate friends and family. Direct them to a number of sites that
help explain bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses. Great
reference sites include the National Alliance on Mental Illness. * Confidently explain that one if five people suffers from some form of mental illness or another. * Remember that you are more an insider than you realize. * One out of every five of your friends, acquaintances or associates
likely suffers from some form of mental illness. -Use support groups to
help bolster your self-confidence and promote your inner peace and
well-being. If you are interested in learning more about mental
health, I have compiled an easy to read and understand e-book

“So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ” (Romans 10:17, NLT).
The
more we hear the Gospel of Grace preached and taught, the more our
faith increases. Only the Word of God has the power to change us from
the inside out.
I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren,
concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others
which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again....
1 Thessalonians 4:13
Many
of us, even though we're believers, have seen grief and sorrow as such a
natural part of life that we haven't even questioned them. In fact, if
we're honest, we'd have to admit there are times when we actually want
to feel sad and sorry for ourselves. Why would we choose to
feel sorrow? Because sorrow has an emotional kick to it. It offers a
surge of feeling that, in the beginning stages, is almost intoxicating. But
grief and sorrow are dangerous things. Several years ago God showed me
that they're not the innocent emotions we've thought they were. The
forces behind these emotions are actually spirit beings sent by the
devil himself to kill, steal and destroy. They are a part of the
devastating, satanic barrage Jesus took on Himself when He died on the
cross (Isaiah 53). He bore grief and sorrow, so we wouldn't have to. If
they come knocking on your door, remember, they are not innocent
emotions. They are deadly enemies that Jesus already carried away at
Calvary.
Don't live as those who have no hope. You're a believer.
You know that Jesus Christ died for you and rose again. That not only
gives you hope where physical death is concerned, it gives you hope in
every situation. Sorrow not!
Daily Recap: Randal Grichuk drove in two with a single in the 6th, while
six Blue Jays pitchers allowed just one run in a 2-1 victory Now this from CoachTube Baseball!
By Brandon Ogle Baseball is a constant game of adjustments. In the 1940’s, Ted Williams
essentially forced opposing managers to enact a shift because it was the only way to slow him down. It worked for a little while until the Red Sox slugger made an adjustment to hit more to the opposite field. This is just one of many examples on how teams have implemented the shift to serve as an adjustment to get more hitters out. Basic Positioning In terms of the actual positioning, we have seen more varieties arise in recent years. However, for the sake of this article, I’ll give the most general one that’s been used. Here is how it looks: The third baseman will move over to where the shortstop normally is. The shortstop will slide over to the right of second base. Meanwhile, the second baseman will move back into the grass and in-between second and first. The first baseman will slide over closer to the line. As for the outfield, the right fielder can get closer to the line and the center fielder will move into right-center. This is the most commonly used shift, but it is still important to gauge the hitting abilities of the player at the plate and adjust appropriately. Advantages of Using the Shift on Defense Before even starting this section, I want to make it clear that merely shifting a lot is not always an effective strategy. There is a substantial difference between shifting a lot and shifting effectively (recording outs). For younger levels, it might be hard to determine when to shift. If it’s a team you’ve played before or one that you can watch the opposing players take batting practice, then this might be a little easier. However, there are plenty of advantages that can arise from implementing a shift. The most prevalent one is limiting a hitter’s ability to pull the ball. Obviously, baseball players love to pull the ball to nab extra base hits. It is much more difficult to be a consistent opposite field hitter. In fact, we’ve even seen some players dominate throughout the minors only to struggle in the majors once managers start shifting against them. The shift also benefits pitchers. When there defense is aligned appropriately, they can limit hits against them and basically have to throw less pitches, thus allowing them to go deeper into the game. In addition, they can focus solely on the inner half of the plate to force the hitter to pull it. These are two of the primary advantages that can be brought about by shifting effectively.
Players Must Learn Other Spots In order to implement a shift, the infielders must be capable of sliding a little out of their comfort zone. For example, the third baseman is no longer covering the third baseline. Rather, now he is forced to basically act as a fill-in shortstop. The same goes for the rest of the infield, including the second baseman, who is now technically in the outfield. All of these may sound like minor adjustments, but when you get in an actual game situation, they seem a little more rigorous. With this being the case, I don’t think it’s a terrible idea for young infielders to work on their versatility. This would include taking grounders at different positions. Avoid being solely focused on one position. As for a Major Leaguer that’s portrayed this exact versatility, check out the increasingly valuable Ben Zobrist. Since you have to practice other spots, it doesn’t hurt to study some more online about these other positions. This instructional video from CoachTube will walk you through some of these other spots. You don’t have to spend a ton of time on them, but it can be helpful to get a general idea! How to Beat the Shift Despite the clear advantages a shift can bring, there are also plenty of ways for hitters to beat it. Jonathan Lucroy, who is the catcher for the Milwaukee Brewers, is one example of a player who was shifted against immensely. His response: just adjust! Lucroy referred to this adjustment saying, “Personally, I love when teams shift on me. I try to hit ‘em where they ain’t, like Willie Keeler.” There are a few ways, including the ones Lucroy’s exhibited, that can beat the shift. Bunt Typically, we see bigger players get shifts put on them, so it might sound a little crazy to ask these big power bats to bunt. But, why not? If the infield is basically entirely on the right side, all you have to do is firmly bunt it down the line and you’ll be safe every time. When you do this a couple of times to the defense, they’ll start to respect your abilities and they will no longer implement the shift. Take Advantage With a shift on, the pitcher is going to try to pound you inside to force a pull. However, even at the Major League level, pitchers make mistakes. They may intend to throw a cutter inside, but instead leave it hanging on the outside corner. If you try to pull this ball, it will be an easy pop out. The alternative is to go with it and hit a soft liner to left for a hit. Take your pick on which you’d rather have. Increased Relevance As I mentioned in the introductory sections, coaches love to shift nowadays. If a player is going to try to kill you by pulling the ball, then why not put extra guys over there because you know that’s where it’s going. The number of shifts in the MLB rose by over 10,000 from 2010 to 2014. That is certainly a staggering figure. You’d think of all players that Major League players wouldn’t hesitate to make the adjustment to continue to succeed. However, it isn’t difficult to see why they don’t adjust immediately. These are players that have probably dominated their entire lives and continuously been the best player on the field at any given time. Now, the opposition is attempting to limit their abilities by putting extra guys on the right side? This stubbornness and lack of adjusting is a perfect explanation why managers will continue to implement shifts! Numbers Game Baseball is a numbers game. Even at the youth level, players develop tendencies. When they see an inside pitch, they want to pull it. After multiple times of doing this, they’ll want to pull everything. With this said, it is the defense’s responsibility to read and react to these tendencies. A shift is one perfect example of it. If you think a younger age like 12 is too young to shift, think again because it just might make you a much better team!

Top 5 Things Coaches Should Strive To Get Out Of Spring Camp
Here are a few things that if you teach and emphasize in the spring, it will pay off in the fall. Spring football practice is one of the most important periods for any high school football program. I know that in some states, there is no spring practice (I couldn’t imagine). However, here in South Carolina, it starts on May 1st, and it is critical to what we do. It is a time of teaching. Teaching the what, when, where, how, and why of football to high school aged kids. That point (high school aged kids who think like high school kids) has to be considered in all that you do in spring practice. Many staffs have been to clinics, studied film pulled from YouTube, and have visited spring practices at colleges throughout the country. From those excursions, staffs have a ton of notes and ideas that they want to implement. Go back to the previous paragraph and note the bold type. Just because it looked easy at Clemson or Alabama, doesn’t mean that it will be easy for your kids. Clemson and Alabama got “dudes” that you probably don’t have. With that in mind, I have created a Spring Practice Checklist. It is not a spring practice guide, but it is a reminder of what spring practice should be about (it’s a little time between spring practice and a real game). Create a timeline, re-examine it daily, and tweak when necessary.
1. Establish Discipline: If you don’t have this in your program, you are setting yourself up for failure. Kids have to understand that there are “consequences (either positive or negative) for every action”. Rules are established during this time, and punishment is dispersed accordingly. The quicker that this is established, the teaching environment is set. Point of emphasis: it has to run throughout the program (from the head coach on down). Not one kid should think that he can go to this coach or that coach, and be allowed to do something different from what has been clearly stated. This is where you “prepare the ground for planting”! “Everyone must choose one of two pains: The pain of discipline, or the pain of regret” 2. Establish Routine : Can’t be emphasized enough. Everything starts with this. Routine includes: classroom time, daily practice (stretch, pre-practice, individual periods, special teams periods, tempo periods, tackling, key reading, etc.). This list could go on forever. Your job as a coach is to teach/train your kids. Regardless of what many so called “experts” think, kids appreciate routine. It helps them make good decisions. You can include such things as properly putting on equipment (you will be surprised at the number of kids who don’t know how), the way that the locker is expected to be kept, the proper attire for practice (there are not many kids who don’t own black shorts and white t-shirts), and reading and understanding the practice schedule (can be an adventure for the kid who is out for football for the very first time). 3. Offensive Emphasis: The focus of your offense for spring practice should be establishing fundamentals at all positions. That includes, but is not limited to: getting into a proper stance, understanding the language (A gap, 3 technique, stem, outside release, hat reads, key reads, deep half, flats, swim, rip, kickstep, etc,). If this is a kid’s first year playing football, just those few terms can seem like a foreign language. We have not even touched on signals and indicators. Just the volume of terminology can be overwhelming. KISS is the best way. Give it to each position a little at a time. Make sure that they can digest it all, and then give them a little more. I can’t overemphasize the importance of a planned out calendar. Plan your work, and work your plan! Some of these can be included in your EDD (everyday drills) OL- stance, alignment of the down defenders, pass protection technique, constant foot movement, where the ball is going on run plays, whether you are on the playside or the backside, and base run plays. RB- stance, alignment, blocking (run and pass), fits in pass protections, ball security, base run plays, swing routes, and blitz alerts. WR- stance, alignments, formations, blocking out in space, proper route running, and identifying coverages. QB- this list would be too long. This young man will be the leader of your offense, and he needs to know what you know. You should have a fundamental period with him daily (if only for 10 minutes). Good quarterbacks are developed from the “neck up” He has to spend from 5-10 minutes in what I call “grid period” (run plays on air with the RB’s; great time to emphasize the fakes that he will use.). He has to throw the ROA vs. air (I like it against cans or cones; so that the QB’s can see where the defenders are supposed to drop). "Lethal simplicity”! 4. Defensive Emphasis : DL- stance, alignments, gaps, TACKLING, how to handle the double team, how to use his hands, attacking the offensive lineman (half a man), and his alignment in all of the base defenses. LB- stance, alignments, TACKLING, run fits in each defense, key reads, the alignments of everyone in the front 7 of every defense, pass drops, PURSUIT and ANGLES TO THE BALL, and identifying offensive formations. DB- stance, alignments in each coverage, TACKLING, PURSUIT and ANGLES TO THE BALL, knowing each coverage , knowing offensive formations, key reads. 5. Special Teams: Often overlooked in spring practice (big mistake). 1⁄3 of football involves some form of special teams. Assign a minimum of 2 coaches to teach fundamentals of special teams (with at least 2 more serving as the assistants). Play your best players on special teams (be at least 2 deep at every position on every special team. Practice those kids in those positions, and move special teams to the early part of practice (so kids can see how important it is to you). Find those kids who can run, yet are big enough and strong enough to make a real difference in special teams. Give those teams “nicknames” (for example, the KO team can be called “the bomb” squad- we blow sh*t up (feel free to change that). Put the kickers and punters in pressure situations daily (field goal to win it at the end, an onside kick, punting out of the end zone, just to name a few). Finally: This is not a “be all to end all” in regards to spring practice. Not once was installing a whole playbook ever mentioned. Teach the kids the fundamentals, because fundamentals will win for you a whole lot more than a double pass or a trick play. Have a great spring coaches!
