As they work out, Steve and James discuss their nutrition plans:
Steve: If I’m not counting my macros or structuring my meals, I’ll go way too long without getting my protein.
James: Ya, when I diet it actually makes me more disciplined with my eating so I eat a whole lot better.
Steve: You eat more!
James: Ya, I’ll eat way more calories. That’s why, the first couple weeks was just building my metabolism. I’m a believer in carbs. Even when I cut carbs, I’ll still get a gram per pound of lean body mass on my low-carb days. So that’s 175g and then 350g on a high-carb day.
Steve: Mine’s 450, 325 and my low is 200.
Courtney: My high-carb day is like their low-carb day. My extra-high day!
As they’re about to leave, the group runs into Regan Grimes, another IFBB Pro Bodybuilder and Jason Poston, an IFBB Physique Pro. When you come work out at Gold’s Gym Venice, you’re bound to run into someone within the bodybuilding industry.
After his workout, James takes Mike to the famous Firehouse Restaurant. The menu is specifically designed for bodybuilders, as it’s a tradition for athletes to come eat here after working out at Gold’s Gym. James orders a ground turkey patty, egg whites and white rice. Standard.
The two close out their evening skateboarding along the Venice Beach boardwalk and enjoying the west coast sunset.

Toxins accumulate in our bodies for various reasons, but one main reason is all the unnatural foods we ingest. Many of today’s popular products, including foods, snacks, and drinks, are ridden with unnatural chemicals. Even with a healthy digestive system, not all of these toxins can be eliminated. That is why a cleanse is recommended on occasion.

Since the main cause of toxin buildup in our bodies is the unnatural foods we consume, the easiest way to detoxify your body is to make the switch to organic foods. With all natural ingredients, you are taking a break from the chemical and additive ridden foods currently on the market today.

When eating organic foods, it is best if you make the full-time switch to all-natural foods, but even just a few weeks or months of consuming organic only foods can help to improve your health.

Water Fasting

Water fasting is a relatively quick way to detox your body, but it is an approach that many people find difficult. This is due to the elimination of solid foods. A water fast is popular due to your ability to lose weight. If you do not eat solid foods, calories are not an issue. This will automatically result in weight loss. Juice Fasting

Juice fasting is similar to water fasting; only juice is consumed. On the market, you will find a number of all-natural juices. These juices are made without sugar and other unnatural additives. You can also make your own juices at home with a juicer. This approach is nice, as it allows you to experiment and find the best tasting juices.

Juice fasting has the same dangers as water fasting, as you are not consuming solid foods. That is why extended juice fasts are advised against. It is, however, the perfect alternative for those who fear that the tastelessness of water can ruin their fast.

Increase Fiber Intake

Fiber is important to a healthy digestive system. Since many studies have shown that most do not consume the recommended daily dose of fiber, it is no surprise that many experience a buildup of toxins in their bodies. That is why foods that are high in fiber are recommended. It is best to get your fiber through foods, such as raspberries, as opposed to fiber supplements.

By increasing your fiber intake, you should notice an improvement in your digestive system and regularity. This may be enough to please you. If you truly want to cleanse your body, it is best to combine fiber with healthy or all-natural, organic foods.

Exercise

Unfortunately, when many individuals think of expelling toxins from the body, the bathroom automatically comes to mind. Yes, this is the most common way to detox the body, but the human body also does so through sweating. For that reason, exercise can help you detox your body.

As with increasing your fiber intake, exercise is recommended with healthy eating. On the other hand, exercising and water or juice fasting does not go hand-in-hand. When on a fast, you will notice a temporary decrease in energy, due in part to the elimination of solid foods. When they went to check things out, they quickly determined that wasn't the case. "He was friendly," said Carter. "He was, I think, more trying to make friends than hurt anybody." The Arlington Police Department, like many other agencies, has responded to aggressive dog calls in the past that end with the dog being shot. They say those incidents are very traumatic for the entire community -- and they want to minimize them. That's why last year, they began stepping up training for all of their officers. "We had training to show us what to look for in a dog," said Sgt. Jeff Houston, spokesperson for the Arlington Police Department. "That way we can tell what their demeanor is and if they're truly an aggressive dog." Carter took the dog, whose name is Jeffrey, to Arlington Animal Services. In an effort to find his owner or find him a new home, Arlington Police wrote a post on facebook describing the situation. As of 5:00pm Friday, that post had been viewed more than 4 million times, and had nearly 74,000 likes and 7,800 comments. "It makes me feel good that I've had that kind of a positive response," said Carter. "Maybe people can realize that first of all, not all big dogs are dangerous and second of all, not all police officers are out to shoot big dogs. Because we're not." Fortunately, Jeffrey had a microchip and was reunited with his owner, Antonio Mireles, Friday morning. Mireles says Jeffrey, who he just got last week, escaped through his fence. "I really appreciate that," said Mireles. "[Sgt. Carter] did a great job." Carter says the only thank you he really needed, though, was watching Jeffrey go home.

DR. O: YOU’LL NEVER DEPLETE ALL YOUR GLYCOGEN

James Grage: Here’s another that I have, because I can’t find the answer on this. Under normal circumstances, they always generalize and say that the brain takes about 120-130g of glucose. Then once you’re in ketosis, your brain can function with about 70% of its energy coming from ketones. So what is the energy value of a ketone? In other words, if it was glucose, we could actually put that to calories and say, “If it’s 130 grams, that would be 520 calories.”
Dr. Brett Osborn: That data should be there. You should be able to figure that out. I actually don’t know the number, but you should be able to figure it out.
James: Here’s why I’m asking. They say that a healthy person’s liver can produce about 180g of ketones a day. So my question is, if one of the main benefits of producing ketones is to fuel your brain, at what point is there enough of these ketones left over? Because again, I think people associate ketones with efficiently burning fat. They’re saying, “If my liver is turning fatty acids into ketones, not only is it fueling my brain, but it’s running my body.” Is that true?
Dr. O: That’s very true.
James: Can you convert enough fatty acids into ketones to have an additional benefit outside of just normal lipolysis?
Dr. O: Look, the bottom line is this. If you’re starving and you’re 20 days in, is your glucose gonna be too? No. It’s not. You’re always gonna have enough glucose no matter what. The answer is yes. We don’t know how much you need to have in excess. I can only tell you that you’re going to have plenty of glucose to also subserve your brain, subserve your skeletal muscle, etc. I don’t know percentage wise. That’s a very, very difficult question to answer. But what I can tell you is that there’s plenty of glucose floating around in your body even if you’re 30 days into a fast, even if you’re 40 days into a fast. There’s plenty. You’re never going to be hyperglycemic where you stroke your brain. It’s just not gonna happen. By virtue of the ketones, by virtue of the glycogenesis that’s being done at the muscular level. And you also have plenty of fat to break down. Remember, you have hundreds of thousands of calories underneath your skin, even if you’re lean. That’s how come you can live so long without anything aside from water. Month and a half? No food. Zero. You can live. So say you do a glycolytic set and you’re ten reps in. In ketosis, are your muscles still burning? Yes or no? Sure you are. And the reason why is that there’s tons of muscle glycogen. You dumped all your liver glycogen but your muscle hangs on to glycogen very, very well. Even though you’re flatter.
Whitney Reid: So you’re not gonna get a pump.
Dr. O: Right.
James: So that’s my question because I read somewhere that the average person stores something like 1,500 or 2000 calories worth of glycogen between liver and muscle. So let’s say that we’ve gone two months of a ketogenic diet. And we’ve depleted most of that glycogen. But you’re saying no, so that’s my question. We’re feeling pretty flat. We’ve dumped a bunch of water. Don’t get that same pump. You’re saying that even in that state, even after months, there’s still residual muscle glycogen and it’s not going anywhere?
Dr. O: Yup.
James: So even the glycogen that your liver is producing through gluconeogenesis, that is going to help maintain that.
Dr. O: It is.
Whitney: For how long?
Dr. O: Nobody knows that answer. But let me give you an example. My son is fully ketogenic. He’s a rower. He’s been a rower for six years. You talk to him after 500 meters in a boat? You are burning. You are anaerobic. This is anaerobic glycolysis. And he’s ketogenic.

James: So let’s say someone who’s 80 pounds overweight goes on Survivor. Twenty days in, they have plenty of stored energy, but at 20 days in, they should be in ketosis. Why aren’t they energetic?
Dr. O: You’re preaching to the choir here. This is why I don’t like my patients in ketosis. What gives you that feeling of energy is the glucose spike. So I always tell people, “Give your body the energy substrate that it needs.”
James: This is my biggest beef with a strict ketogenic diet: our body seems to have a preference for glucose. If our brain – the most important part of our body – preferentially runs off of it. By the way, 500+ calories. I don’t think people realize how many calories it takes to run that “machine” up there. But it seems like our body likes a certain amount of glucose. Yet, I know that you have to be in some sort of low insulin state, meaning on some sort of low-carb diet if you want to get lean. There’s not a diet that I’ve ever done where I got results when I wasn’t doing some sort of low-carb.
