HOW LONG SHOULD I REST BETWEEN SETS?

rest between sets

Even if you have your rep and weight range nailed down, you might be unsure about how long you need to rest between sets. This number will vary depending on your goal: are you trying to improve your strength? Or are you more concerned with putting on muscle?
If your goal is to improve strength, you’re likely attempting to beat one rep maxes every time you step in the gym. For that reason, you should get between 3 and 4 minutes of rest between sets. This allows your muscles to fully recover between each set so you feel strong throughout your reps.
If your goal is to build muscle, on the other hand, the amount of rest between sets decreases significantly. Try to aim for only 60 to 90 seconds.
To understand why, we first have to address your anaerobic vs. aerobic energy systems. Your anaerobic system is the one used in weight training, while your aerobic system supports your cardio. In an anaerobic state, your body converts glucose to ATP, the energy source used to make your muscles work. This produces lactic acid.
As lactic acid begins to build up in your muscles, your performance begins to suffer. To correct this, you need to flush the lactic acid from your system, but how? Rest between sets! The 60-90 seconds we recommended is time in which you can sit and breath, bringing more oxygen to your muscles to help carry away the lactic acid. Drinking water and stretching can also help.
Another way to work around the issue of lactic acid is to use supersets. If you work antagonist muscles on the same day, like biceps and triceps, you can train one muscle group while the other rests. Since you’re still working out while you’re resting, this speeds up your training, reducing the total amount of time you need to spend in the gym. If you’re using supersets, reduce your rest between sets to 15-30 seconds.
Shorter rest times have also been linked to an increase in growth hormone levels. Growth hormone is not only responsible for helping you build muscle, but for fat loss as well. Although lactic acid is commonly vilified, it is actually a trigger for growth hormone, too.
The last benefit of shorter rest times we’re going to cover is the pump. By reducing the amount of rest between sets, you’re keeping your momentum going and the blood flowing into your muscles. This blood flow delivers the nutrients and oxygen needed to improve performance, plus growth hormone to stimulate muscle growth.
There you have it: to build muscle, chase the pump and keep your rest between sets to 60-90 seconds.

Vitamins and dietary supplements that your body needs.
By: Mett Gregor
The fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E, and K, are stored in the body for long periods of time and generally pose a greater risk for toxicity when consumed in excess than water-soluble vitamins. Eating a normal, well-balanced diet will not lead to toxicity in otherwise healthy individuals. However, taking vitamin supplements that contain megadoses of vitamins A, D, E and K may lead to toxicity. The body only needs small amounts of any vitamin. While diseases caused by a lack of fat soluble vitamins are rare symptoms of mild deficiency can develop without adequate amounts of vitamins in the diet. Additionally, some health problems may decrease the absorption of fat, and in turn, decrease the absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K. Consult a medical professional about any potential health problems that may interfere with vitamin absorption.

RETINOL
Vitamin A, also called retinol, has many functions in the body. In addition to helping the eyes adjust to light changes, vitamin A plays an important role in bone growth, tooth development, reproduction, cell division, gene expression, and regulation of the immune system. The skin, eyes, and mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, throat and lungs depend on vitamin A to remain moist. Vitamin A is also an important antioxidant that may play a role in the prevention of certain cancers.

Food Sources for Vitamin A

Eating a wide variety of foods is the best way to ensure that the body gets enough vitamin A. The retinol, retinal, and retinoic acid forms of vitamin A are supplied primarily by foods of animal origin such as dairy products, fish and liver. Some foods of plant origin contain the antioxidant, betacarotene, which the body converts to vitamin A. Beta-carotene, comes from fruits and vegetables, especially those that are orange or dark green in color. Vitamin A sources also include carrots, pumpkin, winter squash, dark green leafy vegetables and apricots, all of which are rich in beta-carotene.

How much Vitamin A

The recommendation for vitamin A intake is expressed as micrograms (mcg) of retinol activity equivalents (RAE). Retinol activity equivalents account for the fact that the body converts only a portion of betacarotene to retinol. One RAE equals 1 mcg of retinol or 12 mcg of beta-carotene. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for vitamin A is 900 mcg/ day for adult males and 700 mcg/ day for adult females. Compared to vitamin A, it takes twice the amount of carotene rich foods to meet the body’s vitamin A requirements, so one may need to increase consumption of carotene containing plant foods. Recent studies indicate that vitamin A requirements may be increased due to hyperthyroidism, fever, infection, cold, and exposure to excessive amounts of sunlight. Those that consume excess alcohol or have renal disease should also increase intake of vitamin A.

Vitamin A Deficiency

Vitamin A deficiency is rare, but the disease that results is known as xerophthalmia. It most commonly occurs in developing nations usually due to malnutrition. Since vitamin A is stored in the liver, it may take up to 2 years for signs of deficiency to appear. Night blindness and very dry, rough skin may indicate a lack of vitamin A. Other signs of possible vitamin A deficiency include decreased resistance to infections, faulty tooth development, and slower bone growth.

Vitamin A toxicity

supplements contain high doses of vitamin A. If you take a multivitamin, check the label to be sure the majority of vitamin A provided is in the form of betacarotene, which appears to be safe. Symptoms of vitamin A toxicity include dry, itchy skin, headache, nausea, and loss of appetite. Signs of severe overuse over a short period of time include dizziness, blurred vision and slowed growth. Vitamin A toxicity also can cause severe birth defects and may increase the risk for hip fractures.

VITAMIN D

Vitamin D plays a critical role in the body’s use of calcium and phosphorous. It works by increasing the amount of calcium absorbed from the small intestine, helping to form and maintain bones. Vitamin D benefits the body by playing a role in immunity and controlling cell growth. Children especially need adequate

Food Sources for Vitamin D

The primary food sources of vitamin D are milk and other dairy products fortified with vitamin D. Vitamin D is also found in oily fish (e.g., herring, salmon and sardines) as well as in cod liver oil. In addition to the vitamin D provided by food, we obtain vitamin D through our skin which produces vitamin D in response to sunlight.

RDA

The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for vitamin D appears as micrograms (mcg) of cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). From 12 months to age fifty, the RDA is set at 15 mcg. Twenty mcg of cholecalciferol equals 800 International Units (IU), which is the recommendation for maintenance of healthy bone for adults over fifty. Exposure to ultraviolet light is necessary for the body to produce the active form of vitamin D. Ten to fifteen minutes of sunlight without sunscreen on the hands, arms and face, twice a week is sufficient to receive enough vitamin D. This can easily be obtained in the time spent riding a bike to work or taking a short walk. In order to reduce the risk for skin cancer one should apply sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or more, if time in the sun exceeds 10 to 15 minutes.

Vitamin D Deficiency

Symptoms of vitamin D deficiency in growing children include rickets (long, soft bowed legs) and flattening of the back of the skull. Vitamin D deficiency in adults may result in osteomalacia (muscle and bone weakness), and osteoporosis (loss of bone mass). amounts of vitamin D to develop strong bones and healthy teeth The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for adults is 3,000 mcg RAE. It would be difficult to reach this level consuming food alone, but some multivitamin Recently published data introduces a concern that some adults and children may be more prone to developing vitamin D deficiency due to an increase in sunscreen use. In addition, those that live in inner cities, wear clothing that covers most of the skin, or live in northern climates where little sun is seen in the winter are also prone to vitamin D deficiency. Since most foods have very low vitamin D levels (unless they are enriched) a deficiency may be more likely to develop without adequate exposure to sunlight. Adding fortified foods to the diet such as milk, and for adults including a supplement, are effective at ensuring adequate vitamin D intake and preventing low vitamin D levels.

Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with increased risk of common cancers, autoimmune diseases, hypertension, and infectious disease. In the absence of adequate sun exposure, at least 800 to 1,000 IU of vitamin D3 may be needed to reach the circulating level required to maximize vitamin D’s benefits.

Vitamin D toxicity

The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for vitamin D is set at 100 mcg for people 9 years of age and older. High doses of vitamin D supplements coupled with large amounts of fortified foods may cause accumulations in the liver and produce signs of poisoning. Signs of vitamin D toxicity include excess calcium in the blood, slowed mental and physical growth, decreased appetite, nausea and vomiting. It is especially important that infants and young children do not consume excess amounts of vitamin D regularly, due to their small body size.

Can Pepper Sprays Subdue A Violent Assailant
By: Jerry Wilkins
Are pepper sprays truly an effective self defense weapons? We are going to examine one of the more common myths or misconceptions about pepper sprays

An acquaintance of mine recently asked me why I sell pepper sprays. At first I did not grasp the implications of his question but after talking with him for a few minutes I realized that he believed they were useless as a deterrent for violence. I started to ask friends what they thought of pepper sprays and I was surprised about most of their answers. Pepper sprays are very cheap therefore they probably won't do the job was the usual answer. I later accepted the fact this is a common misconception

Bad45: Tacfit Bodyweight And Dumbell System

Pepper sprays are extremely inexpensive however just because a product does not cost you an arm and a leg does not mean it is useless. This attitude seems to prevail in our American society today, yet people will aggressively shop for bargains and sales. The price of pepper sprays is directly connected to manufacturing costs and the size of the container the larger the container the higher the price. Let's also note that most pepper sprays are manufactured in countries with a much cheaper workforce. It should be obvious that the retail price for pepper sprays should not be an issue.

What about the effectiveness of this product?

Pepper spray is really a non-lethal self defense weapon developed to spray into the face of the assailant. Pepper spray affects the mucous membranes, leading to your eyes dilating and triggering temporary blindness. Additionally, it irritates the bronchial tube causing it to swell, making it hard for the attacker to breathe. One burst of pepper spray affects your eyes, throat, nasal cavity and lung area, allowing the effects to last as much as two hours. Pepper spray is produced from hot cayenne all kinds of peppers. The active component is known referred to as oleoresin capsicum.

Pepper sprays are a proven reliable self defense weapon. Law enforcement Agencies, correctional facilities and Security Companies have all provided their personnel with pepper sprays. I was sprayed with this product while training with 40 other cadets at the Baltimore City Police Academy. Ever one was incapacitated for at least thirty minutes, and it was a few hours before we fully recovered. I also used pepper sprays on suspects resisting arrest and the only problem I incurred after that was listening to them screaming for help.

The Keys That Unlock Healing

Does trying to figure out healing feel like fumbling around with a giant wad of keys to find just the right one? Call off the search! The keys that unlock healing are right here.

If you’ve ever lost your keys, you know one thing—it can be frustrating! You can’t open the door to your house, you can’t start your car, and you can’t get your mail. You’re locked out and have no access to what belongs to you.
Sometimes, we can feel the same way spiritually when it comes to healing. We know healing belongs to us. We know abundance, peace and joy are rightfully ours, but we can’t seem to find the keys. We get down on the spiritual ground looking this way and that way and think, Maybe if I pray harder and longer, maybe if I say a few more confessions, I will get my healing. Or we might even get off course enough to think, Maybe it isn’t God’s will to heal me.
Stop right there.
If you’re in the place where you’re going through a wad of spiritual keys the size of a janitor’s key ring, and questioning if a key even exists—it’s time to take a step back and look to the Master Locksmith. He has the master key that opens every door to your blessing, your healing and your victory—it’s the Word of God. You don’t have to fumble around looking for the keys to your healing anymore. You don’t have to keep trying one key after another on that giant key ring. The life and healing ministry of Jesus takes the exact keys you need off the ring and places them right in your hands.
If you’re ready to stop fumbling around with that giant key ring, here are five keys that unlock healing.

Key No. 1: Meditate on God

“My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.” –Proverbs 4:20-22 (NKJV)

One of the keys to unlocking healing is found in the hands of the woman with the issue of blood (Luke 8:43-48). We don’t know much about this woman—we don’t know her name, her family background or what may have caused her ailment. We don’t even know if she’d ever met Jesus before. But we do know this—she got healed.
How? Well, it was a long process for her. She had been struggling with her ailment for 12 long years. She’d spent every dime she had trying to get better, but instead was worse. She was also not allowed to walk the streets, so she had been shut in her home for all these years—until now.
What would cause someone to take such a leap of faith and leave her home to walk the streets (illegally) and ask a man she may have never met to heal her?
The answer is simple: faith.
How did she come by such bold faith? By meditating on Jesus. Though she was shut in, she had clearly heard of Him. She had heard of His miracles, His compassion, His healings. She had meditated on these things in her heart long enough for faith to rise up within her. She was already believing for healing before she ever stepped onto the street.
She thought about it and thought about it until faith came, and then it came out of her mouth as she said, “If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole” (Mark 5:28). And what did Jesus say? He said, “Your faith has healed you” (Mark 5:34; NIV).
That same key will work for you. Start meditating on the Word. Meditate on Jesus instead of thinking about what the world has to say or what your symptoms or your feelings tell you. Turn off the television for a while and keep your focus on Him. If you do see commercials for pills and drugs for diseases—talk back! Say, “There’s healing for that. I don’t need your pills. Glory to God.” Talk back or don’t watch it. Keep your consciousness from having access to anything but Jesus until faith comes and gets in your mouth, and you start speaking faith. You’ll know when it comes—when you start to get excited about it!
Mark 11:23-24 tells us that whatever we desire, when we pray, we should believe we receive it. So when you pray, start believing while you’re praying—not after. The woman with the issue of blood didn’t just jump onto the street that day and get healed. No. She spent enough time meditating on these things to become fully persuaded, and that time meditating on Jesus unlocked her healing.

Key No. 2: Clothe Yourself in Bible Humility“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” –Hebrews4:16 (NKJV)
You may not have checked your key ring for this key to healing, but it fits the lock and
opens the door. What is it? Humility.
The Bible definition of humility is “boldness”—coming boldly to the throne of grace to find mercy and help. Andrew Murray defined humility as “the place of entire dependence on God.”[1] In other words, when we don’t think we need God’s help, or if we’re trying to
solve all our own problems, we’re knee-deep in the sin of pride.
How do you know if you’re operating in pride? Pride says, “I’ve got this.” Pride stays up
all night trying to fix it. Why won’t God come and fix it for you? Because He can’t. You’re
holding it.
On the other hand, humility is acknowledging that God is greater than we are. We are
told to be clothed and covered with humility (1 Peter 5:1-5), and that includes casting
our cares upon God (1 Peter 5:7).

Minding Your Business! Business Advertising Ideas Using Custom Printed Promotional Products [US Sports Marketing]

By: Elizabeth Morgan
You have decided to take the plunge and start your own business. It doesn’t matter if you have an actual storefront, medical office or a web business; you still have to advertise to let prospective customers know who you are and what you do. An effective way to get your name in front of qualified consumers is to print your name and logo on useful promotional products. Successful companies usually budget about 3% of their annual revenue for business advertising expenses, be sure to include printed products in your advertising allowance.

Business cards, letterheads and envelopes are required by all types of businesses. The quality of paper and printing methods say a lot about you and your business. Stay away from the "free" printing services offered on line, when your prospective customer flips over your business card to write notes, you do not want them to see someone else’s ad on the back.

Make sure you have high quality pens engraved with your company name and logo. How much you spend on a pen is up to you, nice printed plastic barrel pens start at less than .50 each. When placing your order, save money with quantity discounts. Customers are likely to walk off with your pens if they use them to sign checks and credit cards. This is a great way to remind them where they took it from. Another way to distribute your pens is to leave a few at the banks and post offices in your area. Always have your phone number and website printed on your pens to get the most value from your business advertising dollars.

There is nothing worse than shopping at a store and trying to find an employee to help you find something. Identify your employees professionally with printed uniform shirts. Polo style shirts in your company colors look great and they are comfortable. Casual shirts have become widely accepted for many retail and sales businesses. T-shirts printed with your company logo are an affordable alternative. You might be surprised how proud your staff will be to wear company shirts, jackets and hats even on their day off. Consider baseball style caps for employees or use them as a give away for your good customers.

Business expos or home and trade fairs in your area are also a great way to meet prospective clients and customers. Membership in your local business association or chamber of commerce gives you many advantages. Summer parades and holiday functions give you an opportunity to show your community that you care. A great way to break the ice when talking to strangers is to hand them a free token of appreciation. There are endless promotional products related to your business that can be printed with your name and logo. Measuring tapes, mini screwdrivers, key rings and can coolers are just a few useful items your customers will keep for a long time. Children will drag their parents directly to you for a free balloon or candy. Make sure they remember you when they get home.

Gain exposure for your company by sponsoring a sports team. Soccer, baseball teams and even bowlers will proudly wear your name on their jerseys or shirts. Donate balls, tees and divot tools with your brand to the next golf outing. Water bottles with your logo are sure to be a hit with basketball teams and cyclists.

Celebrate the milestones of your business by printing anniversary dates on all of your promotional products. Consumers will respect and value the longevity of your company.

No matter if your company is new or well established, business advertising is key. Think about the many items you must purchase for your business. They can double their value when you also gain the marketing advantage with custom printed promotional products.

Promotional items are used in marketing, advertising, and in communication programs. Giving away promotional items like promotional coffee mugs to your clients is one of the ways to promote the company, the brand, and an event.

THE TRUTH: TRAINING NATURALLY VS. ENHANCED

training naturally vs. enhanced

Today we’re talking about something we’ve never addressed – a controversial topic that always sparks debate. Our goal here at BPI is to help you. We do this by providing information, separating fact from fiction and simplifying fitness so it’s easier for you to understand. To stay true to this mission, we have to cover everything, which means it’s time to cover training naturally vs. enhanced, aka taking steroids.
This topic tends to bring out a lot of negativity, and people often assume they already know everything there is to know. In spite of these aversions, we believe it’s necessary to clear up the confusion surrounding steroids by tackling the issue head on. We simply ask that you read through the entire blog before passing judgment.

WHAT DO STEROIDS DO FOR YOU?

Steroids provide two main benefits: recovery and protein synthesis.
Recovery
If you’re training naturally, you have to be more cognizant of your rest days because that recovery period is when you truly build muscle. If you’re taking steroids, you have an advantage in that you are able to recover quicker. That means you can train with more volume, more often, and still recover. Trying to train at that same intensity and frequency naturally would result in muscle catabolism, or loss, because you aren’t giving your body adequate time to recover and rebuild.
Protein Synthesis
Protein synthesis is the process in which muscle is built back up, also known as anabolism. Supplements like protein and BCAAs help support this anabolic state, while steroids take it a step further and accelerate protein synthesis. Your body is still perfectly capable of protein synthesis in a natural state, and there are numerous training techniques that can help you build muscle. Steroids don’t alter this process or change the work that must be done to build a great physique. They just enhance what your body is already doing.

WHAT DON’T STEROIDS DO FOR YOU?

Steroids are not magic. Much of the debate over them is due to misunderstanding. Think about the controversy surrounding professional baseball players who were caught using steroids. Everyone thinks that the steroids were used to make the players stronger, which resulted in more home runs. This is not how steroids work. The steroids allowed the players to recover faster from their rigorous schedules. These athletes play 162 games a season, multiplied by the number of years in their career. Add in travel, mandatory workouts and practice, and you can start to appreciate the wear and tear they endure.

HOW DO STEROIDS IMPACT FITNESS?

In the past, athletes used to train until they reached their natural potential. Once they reached this max genetic threshold, they would evaluate their situation and decide whether they wanted to push their bodies further. Only then would they incorporate steroids. Today, everyone wants instant gratification – quick, easy results instead of dedicating themselves to decades of training.

THE MISCONCEPTION

Yes, there are athletes that will choose to take the short cut. However, there are also guys out there that put in the time and hard work and achieve the same results. Looking good is not an indicator of steroids. Shredded abs are not an indicator of steroids. Reaching your max natural potential requires a level of commitment to training and nutrition that most people will never master. So instead of jumping to conclusions every time you see an admirable physique, give the athlete the benefit of the doubt and show some respect for the work that goes into it.
