College and Social Responsibility
By: Mark Maiewski

College brings many opportunities for students. The most important opportunity is preparing for a career. College is also brings opportunities for students to develop social skills and make friendships that last a lifetime. But how do these new social opportunities affect the student's academics?

Each year, some students lose the privilege of attending college due to poor grades caused by too much social life. Here are some ideas that may prevent the "social life" degree overtaking the academic degree.

Discuss social responsibility with your student. Discuss underage drinking, drug use, dating relationships, and social skills (picking up your stuff, respecting quiet times, and using hygiene skills). Develop the "sharing space with others" skill.

Students with this skill enjoy their dorm experience more than those that struggle to share space. Define what is and what is not acceptable and then list the consequences ranging from sanctions from Mom and Dad to a police record. Let your student know you expect him or her to meet your expectations.

Tell your student stories about your own college or moving out experiences. These stories can share lessons without your student going through the tough experiences. This is also a great way to start that social responsibility conversation and keep the communication channels open.

Let your student know the consequences of good and poor choices. Remind them that you can remove funding and bring the student home if he or she doesn't meet the expectations of the college or Mom and Dad. Discuss the consequences to scholarships, loans, and grant money, not just at the current institution but also for the remainder of the student's education.

Discuss the cost of not completing college. Include the cost to future earnings, cost to future promotions, and the cost of paying student loans without a degree. Keep in contact with your child. Send old-fashioned letters and packages (students love this), send email, call occasionally but don't go overboard.

If you feel your student is not doing well, know the people to contact before the crisis develops. Know the tutoring center contact information, mediation center phone number, and other support services locations. Sometimes your student is just too overwhelmed to find the help on their own

Let your student handle as much as possible. College is a growing experience, developing responsibility and creating the beliefs and goals that build the student's future. Socialization and networking start here as well. Just remember that many "right ways" of balancing academics and social life exist.

Your student wants to make Mom and Dad proud. Cheer the accomplishments knowing that though some mis-steps may happen, overall your student will remember your expectations and maintain the balance necessary to wave that college diploma high.

Mark Maiewski has spent the last 10 years showing students how to successfully get admitted to college and keeping parents out of deep debt by developing a workable plan to get it paid.

Dr. Myles Munroe - Face the New Year with Fearless Confidence and Prayers for Children - 5 Daily Prayer Confessions For Parents

Prayers for Children - 5 Daily Prayer Confessions For Parents

By: Michael Brandon

The scriptures contain many promises that we can include in both our prayers for children and our daily confessions for our families. Children are a gift from God, and as parents we want to do the best we can to instill in them the values and character traits they need to become caring, responsible adults. No matter how old they are, we always want what is best for them, but parenting can sometimes be a difficult job, and the most successful parents are those who pray for their children and ask God for His guidance and help. The words we speak to, and about, our children are powerful, and it is important that we confess good things so that they will be safe, healthy, make wise choices, and follow God throughout their lives.
  1. Confession for Protection and Safety.

Our number one concern is usually for our children's safety. We live in a dangerous world and there can be so many reasons to fear. We can be concerned about violence, car accidents, bad influences, or unsafe environments. But, the scriptures give us many promises for safety and confessing these words is a way of asking God to help protect our children from harm.

A daily confession could be something as simple as: "Thank you God for your promises of protection and for keeping our children safe in all their ways – that when they face dangerous situations or pass through trials You will be there with them and they will not suffer harm or physical injury. Thank you for hiding them in the shadow of Your wings, that they dwell in safety, and that no weapon formed against them will prosper."

  2. Confession for Health or Healing.

As parents, we want our children to be healthy and strong, and when we see them hurting or suffering we want to do everything we can to help them. The Bible contains many passages that we can use to confess health and healing for our children's lives.

A daily prayer confession could include: "The Scriptures say that health is a promise and an inheritance for those who love and serve the Lord, and we thank You for taking sickness far away from our children, for restoring health to them, healing their wounds, and delivering them from destruction. We pray that they will not become depressed or discouraged, that they will be in good health, that Your Word will bring strength to their bones, and that all will go well with them."

  3. Confessions for Wise Choices and Good Friends.

We want our children to choose their friends wisely and to socialize with people who share their values and will not encourage them to become involved in wrong or dangerous situations. We desire for them to be confident in who they are and to make choices based on what they know is right rather than from insecurity or a need for acceptance. Everyday, we can pray for our children, their friends, and anyone else who may have an influence on their lives.

A prayer confession example could be: "We pray that our children will be wise when choosing their friends. Thank you, God, for giving them self-esteem and confidence, that they will not do something just because the crowd is doing it and that they will not let peer pressure dictate their decisions. We ask that You send good examples into their lives and that they will find great friends who want to honor You and do what is right. We pray that our children will not associate with those people who want to bring them to calamity or ruin, but that they will hunger and thirst for righteousness."

Bowie State Hoops Vs Lincoln Men's and Women's Results

BOWIE, Md. - Bowie State University women’s basketball tied their season low 28 percent field goal shooting and suffered its first CIAA home loss of the year, falling 55-46 to Lincoln University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday evening in packed A.C. Jordan Arena. The 46 points were the second lowest point total of the season for the Bulldogs.

Junior Lea Whitehead (Odenton, Md.) came off the Bulldogs bench to record a career-high 10 points in the setback. Seniors Ty-Nita Baker (Houston, Miss.) and Kyah Proctor (Capital Heights, Md.) finished with nine and six points respectively and graduate student Sade Chatman (Minneapolis, Minn.) accounted for six points. Proctor was the teams leading rebounder with seven.

Senior Kiara Colston (Burtonsville, Md.) ended the evening with five points while four other Bowie State players accounted for two points each for Bowie State (14-7, 7-5 CIAA, 2-4 North).

Michelle Fitzgerald (Baltimore, Md.) recorded a game-high double-double of 13 points and 17 rebounds to pace the Lincoln (Pa.) Lady Lions. Teira Pendleton (Baltimore, Md.) added 11 points while Shahra Madison (Chesapeake, Va.) scored ten points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Lincoln (Pa.) (14-7, 8-4 CIAA, 3-3 North) complete a regular season series sweep of the Bulldogs with the win, marking the third time in the last four seasons that Lincoln has recorded the season sweep.

The two teams felt each other out over the first 4:29 with four ties and two lead changes.  Following the media timeout, the Lions went on a 9-0 run to take control of the game and led 17-8 with 2:29 left in quarter.  Madison had five of the nine points during the run with Fitzgerald and Pendleton adding two apiece.  The Bulldogs scored the final four points of the opening quarter to pull within five 12-7 heading into the second quarter.

The Lions pushed the lead to double digits in the second quarter, using an 11-2 flourish to take a 28-14 lead with 2:05 left, getting production from five different players.  Pendleton started the scoring with a layup and after a bucket from BSU’s Baker, Lincoln got field goals from Ashley Paynes-Hightower (Peoria, Ill.), Diamond Mickle (Fredericksburg, Va.) and a three-point basket from DeeDee Irwin (Coatesville, Pa.).  Madison completed the run with two free throws.  The Bulldogs shaved three points off the lead by halftime with the Lions holding a 30-19 lead at the break.

Two quick baskets by the Bulldogs cut the lead to seven 30-23 before Irwin's second three-ball of the night pushed the lead back to ten 33-23.  The lead oscillated between eight and 13 points the rest of the period with the Lions holding a 40-29 advantage after three quarters.

Mickle's two free throws put Lincoln up by 13 early in the fourth quarter before the Bulldogs climbed back into the contest with a 13-3 run, cutting the Lions lead to three 45-42 with 3:39 remaining.  The two teams exchanged points over the next minute before Irwin put the Lions up by five with a pair of free throws and Pendleton added another from the charity stripe to make the score 50-44 with 1:19 left.

A Whitehead end-line jumper on Bowie State’s next possession trim the Bulldogs deficit to four (50-46) but that would be the closest the home team would get.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday (February 10th), hosting the nationally ranked Virginia Union University Lady Panthers at 1 p.m.

BOWIE, Md. – Sophomore Cameron Hayes (Upper Marlboro, Md.) put up a personal season-best 22 points and senior Omari George (Baltimore, Md.) notched a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Bowie State to a 74-64 victory over Lincoln University of Pennsylvania on Wednesdaynight. The win was the Bulldogs’ fourth in a row and keeps Bowie State tied for first in the CIAA North with a record of 5-1.

In addition to Hayes and George, sophomore Saiquan Jamison (Upper Marlboro, Md.) hauled down nine rebounds and redshirt sophomore David Belle (Hyattsville, Md.) chipped in eight points for the Bulldogs. The Bowie State bench outscored the Lincoln (Pa.) bench, 42-18.

Lincoln University of Pennsylvania (10-12, 5-7 CIAA, 2-4 North) held the lead for the first eight minutes until pair of free throws by Bowie State freshman Keith Duffin, Jr. (Fort Meade, Md.) tied the game at 9-all and 3-point play by sophomore Yohance Fleming (Bowie, Md.) gave the Bulldogs’ its first lead at 12-9 at the 11:16 mark of the first half.

The Lions roared back to create the games’ fourth tie of the night, this time at 19-all. From there, Lincoln (Pa.) rolled off a 7-0 run to take its largest lead of the night at 28-21 after a pair of free throws by Gevon Arrington (Petersburg, Va.) with 4:10 left in the first half.

Bowie State (12-11, 7-5 CIAA) trimmed the Lincoln (Pa.) lead down to one (28-27) with just under a minute to go in the opening half but the Lions were able to carry a 33-28 lead into halftime.

The Bulldogs began the second half with an 8-0 burst to regain what would be the lead for good. Bowie State led by as much as nine (52-43) at the 11:50 mark of the second half but see Lincoln (Pa.) narrow the gap to 62-59 with 4:47 remaining in the game.

From that point, the Bulldogs outscored the Lions 12-6 to account for the final score of 74-65. Bowie State improved its field goal shooting percentage from 21.2 percent (7-of-33) in the first half to 48 percent (12-of-25) over the final 20 minutes.

Josh Page (Washington, D.C.) came off the Lincoln (Pa.) bench to tally a team-high 14 points, with 10-of-11 coming at the free throw line. Arrington and Cameron Campbell (Fayetteville, N.C.) scored 13 points apiece and Deaquan Williams (Camden, N.J.) were responsible for 10 points each in the loss. Williams ripped down a game-high 13 points for the Lions.

The Bulldogs converted 18 Lions turnovers into 19 points, but Lincoln blocked a whopping nine Bowie State shots.

The Bowie State Bulldogs return to the hardwood on Saturday (February 10th), hosting the Virginia Union Panthers in a nationally televised contest at 4 p.m. in the A.C. Jordan Arena.
