BSU Softball and Tennis This Week

BOWIE, Md. – Nationally ranked West University of Pennsylvania softball spoiled the Bowie State University home regular season finale, edging the Lady Bulldogs 3-1 in game one and powered to a 16-0 victory in game two in non-conference action.

Sophomore Stefanie Ray (Damascus, Md.) led Bowie State with a .400 batting average over the two games, getting two hits in five plate at bats and scored the Lady Bulldogs only run over the afternoon. Freshman Madison Margas (Stevensville, Md.) along with sophomores Emily Lewis (Aberdeen, Md.), Jacqueline Pickering (Bowie, Md.) and Nicoleen Ochoa (Madison, Ohio) tallied one hit apiece in the twin bill.

Leading the attack for the West Chester Golden Rams (41-5) were senior Laura Altenburger (Feasterville, Pa.) and Sarah Walasavage (Minersville, Pa.) with three hits each. Walasavage tallied seven RBI over the two games, but all coming in game two. Walasavage’s biggest hit was a grand slam in the 4th inning of game two.

As a team, the Golden Rams recorded 19 total hits on the afternoon compared to just six for the Lady Bulldogs.

Brooke Harner (Chadds Ford, Pa.) earned the 3-1 win in game one, relieving Amanda Houck (Gap, Pa.) in the third inning. Harner allowed one of Bowie State’s three hits and struck out 10.

Ray (7-10) went the distance for the Lady Bulldogs in the opening game, giving up five hits while striking out five Golden Rams. Ray had two of Bowie State’s hits and Ochoa had the other in game one.

It was all West Chester in game two as the Golden Rams pounded out 14 hits. Katie Erb (Douglassville, Pa.) earned the win in the circle to improve her season record to 11-1.

Bowie State committed a season-high eight errors in the nightcap and managed only three hits in the 16-0 loss.

Ochoa (3-9) was roughed up on the bump in game two, going two innings and trailed 6-0 before Ray moved to the circle in relief. Ray didn’t fare much better, giving up eight hits and 10 runs.

The Lady Bulldogs will take a small break before returning to conference play at Elizabeth City State University on Saturday, April 23rd. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State University women's tennis hosted Chowan University on Saturday (4/16), dropping a pair of 9-0, 9-0 decisions. The setbacks set Bowie State's overall mark at 7-5 and 5-5 in league play. The wins improve Chowan's overall season record to 21- 5 and 13-0 in CIAA play with the wins.

In the first match of the day, Chowan’s Polina Novachuka and Victoria Smolchenkova defeated Bowie State senior Amber Peters (Lanham, Md.) and sophomore Dainese Smothers (Washington, D.C.) 8-2 in number one doubles play.  Cynthia Carrier and Angelique Gouin picked up a win by forfeit in number two doubles while Roxana Daneshjoo and Anna Makhneva earned an 8-2 win in number three doubles against Lady Bulldogs’ freshman Madeleine Ndema and senior Rahwa Habtemariam both of Lanham, Md.

Holding a 3-0 lead heading into singles play, the Hawks continued to dominate as each player in the lineup picked up a victory.  Novachuk, Smolchenkova, Carrier, Gouin, Jessica De Backre, and Makhneva topped their opponents in singles play to contribute to the 9-0 win.

In the second match of the afternoon, Carrier/Gouin topped Peters/Smothers 8-2 in number one play with Daneshjoo/Makhneva and De Backre/Andrade earned 8-1 wins in number two and three doubles play, respectively.

In singles competition, the Hawks continued to build on the momentum and swept the Lady Bulldogs to easily secure the 9-0 win.

The Lady Bulldogs will have a quick turnaround, returning to the court on Sunday (4/17) hosting the University of the District of Columbia at 12 noon on Senior Day.
