Bowie State Lady Bulldogs Softball Silence Goldey-Beacom Lightning 6-3, 11-2

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs snapped a four-game losing streak after silencing the Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College 6-3 and 11-2 in non-conference softball action.

Sophomore Hailey Bethke (Havre de Grace, Md.) and senior Cassandra Clayborne (Damascus, Md.) paced the Lady Bulldogs with five and four hits respectively. The doubleheader sweep moves the Bowie State season record to 9-15 overall while Goldey-Beacom falls to 1-16.

Goldey-Beacom in the top of the first inning grabbed a 1-0 lead as senior Asia Ellis (Marlton, NJ) rapped an RBI triple to score sophomore Charlee King (New Castle, DE).  But the Lady Bulldogs erupted in the bottom half for four runs, keyed by Bethke's three-run double.

The Lightning got two back in the second as a grounder from freshman
Kelsey Brandle was misplayed, scoring freshmen Kylie Doyle (Tower City, PA) and Lauren Conway (Hammonton, NJ) to make it 4-3.  But Bethke had an RBI groundout in the fourth and freshman Emily Lewis (Aberdeen, Md.) scored on an error in the sixth for the final.

Conway and King had two hits apiece for GBC.
Paulynn Mao (0-1) gave up five runs and three hits over three-plus innings with two strikeouts.

Bethke amassed two hits and four RBI for Bowie State.  Freshman Nicoleen Ochoa (Madison, Ohio) permitted three runs – one earned – and seven hits over seven innings with five strikeouts.

In game two, Goldey-Beacom grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single from freshman
Natalie Mickles (Dingmans Ferry, PA) and tied it at 2-2 in the third on Doyle's run-scoring single.

The Lady Bulldogs took the lead for good in the third when Bethke again did her thing, lining a two-run triple for a 4-2 lead.  Bowie State ended things in the fifth with five runs, capped on a grand slam by Clayborne.

Mao went 3-for-3 in game two to lead the Lightning.  Doyle had two hits and Mickles was charged with six runs – five earned – and nine hits over 3 1/3 innings.

Clayborne's slam capped a 4-for-4 contest and Bethke went 3-for-3, ending the doubleheader 5-for-6 with six RBI.  Ochoa (7-6) gave up two runs and eight hits over five innings.

The Lady Bulldogs are idle for the next 12 days before returning to action on Saturday, April 18th, hosting The Lincoln University in a CIAA Northern Division doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

2015 Big Train Roster

We are officially two months away from Big Train's opening night at Shirley Povich Field which is a perfect time to release our roster for the 2015 season.

We caught up with Big Train's manager, Sal Colangelo, to get an idea of what we can expect from this year's Big Train team.  Sal said, "the roster is shaping up really nicely". When asked about the players on the upcoming team, Colangelo mentioned that he usually likes to return 6-10 guys who understand "what Big Train is all about, understand the culture, the community, and understand what Big Train is trying to accomplish here".

Colangelo stated that he looks for his returning players to bring leadership to the field and work hard everyday.  While some new players are young and inexperienced, Sal stated that he has added new players for this summer that will bring a polished and mature attitude to the team.

Khari Lee Pro Day Draws Major NFL Attention

BOWIE, Md. - As the NCAA and NBA sprint towards their tournament finals and playoffs, locally all eyes were focused on Bowie State University football and senior tight end Khari Lee.  On Thursday, April 2, 2015, over 24 NFL team General Managers, Scouts and Staff evaluated everything from Lee's height, weight and flexibility to his agility as the Bulldog coaching staff hosted their 2015 Pro Day.

With a host of supporters, staff, former and current players watching and cheering him on to include Douglas McNeil, III, (Wide Receiver, Seattle Seahawks), Lee completed running, blocking and receiving routes with crisp precision to the delight of Head Coach Damon Wilson.

"Khari being our fourth player in the last few years to have an opportunity to continue to play football and make a living is great”, said Wilson. “It is very rewarding to be in our current position with graduating over eighty percent of the football players that we recruit and to see a number of them have an opportunity to pursue their dream.  We are building something great here and a student athlete with Khari’s qualities continues to be so fulfilling to watch flourish.  This is a young man that walked on to our program and followed the plan that was laid before him without hesitation.  I look forward to watching him continue to grow and represent our University well on the next level."

Aside from being a proud Head Coach and Bowie State alumnus, Wilson lamented that Lee finished up his senior season as a three-time All CIAA selection at tight end; coincidentally as did his head coach.  Wilson also added, "I gave Khari my number (#86) his freshman year because I knew then that he would be something special and was even more proud that he played at my former position."
