Bulldogs Upset No. 4 East Stroudsburg 76-71 in CIAA-PSAC Challenge
LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. - Three players scored in double figures Saturday afternoon for the Bowie State University men's basketball team, as the Bulldogs upset 4th ranked (NABC Poll) East Stroudsburg University by a score of 76-71. Freshman Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) paced the Bulldogs with a game-high 19 points, going 7-for-10 from the floor, while junior Andre Jackson (Baltimore, Md.) added 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Fellow junior Justin Beck (Baltimore, Md.) tallied 12 points and tied Jackson for game-high rebound honors.
Wilson was named to the All-Challenge Team and selected the Most Valuable Player. Jackson and senior Cameron Knox (Baltimore, Md.) were also selected to the All-Challenge Team along with East Stroudsburg’s Jamal Nwaniemeka (Philadelphia, Pa.).
“This was a terrific (signature) win for us”, said Bowie State Head Coach Darrell Brooks. “We said going into today’s game that this was a great opportunity for us … They’re a really good basketball team and even though this is early in the year, this is kind of reminiscent of a NCAA Semifinal type game.”
East Stroudsburg (1-1), which beat host Lincoln 92-72 on Friday night, led by 11 points in the first half and by eight with 12 minutes remaining before Bowie State (2-0) rallied with a 19-5 run in a four-minute stretch midway through the second half.
Wilson scored eight points in the run and had 14 of his 19 points in the second half. He scored 20 points off the bench in Bowie State's 76-64 win over Millersville on Friday. Nwaniemeka scored 17 and Whis Grant (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) scored 15 points and added six assists. Lamont Tillery had 13 points and six rebounds and Rasheed Moore had 11 points and six rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 48.3 percent (29-for-60) from the field and 11-for-20 from the three-point line, led by Wilson (4-for-5) and Jackson (3-for-6).
East Stroudsburg had an 18-14 turnover advantage, but was outrebounded 43-34 and shot 37.3 percent (25-for-67) overall and 7-for-24 from long distance.
ESU built a 27-16 lead at the nine-minute mark of the first half, but Bowie State recovered to take a two-point lead late in the period before the Warriors tied it, 37-37, at halftime.
The Warriors pushed their advantage back to eight points a couple times in the second half, going ahead 51-43 after a three-pointer byMatt Tobin (Hopatcong, N.J.) with just under 12 minutes left.
Bowie State scored the next eight points in just over a minute to tie the game, and later got back-to-back three's by senior Zafir Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Wilson to lead 62-56 with eight minutes to play.
ESU cut it back to one possession with five minutes left, but didn't score again after closing within 73-71 with 2:50 remaining. The Warriors missed three three-pointers and two free throws down the stretch.

Shippensburg Raiders Cruise Past Bowie State Lady Bulldogs 79-55
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Host Shippensburg University led from beginning to end, cruising to an easy 79-55 non-conference win over Bowie State University on Saturday night. The loss evens the Lady Bulldogs record at 1-1 while the Raiders square their season mark at 1-1.
Morgan Griffin recorded a game double-double high of 25 points and 17 rebounds to lead Shippensburg. Lauren Gold scored 13 points and dished out five assists while Logan Snyder contributed 12 points, two assists and one steal for the Raiders.
Stephanie Knauer tallied seven points and nabbed nine rebounds as Haley Scullion collected five points, three rebounds and two assists in the win.
Bowie State senior Donia Naylor (Washington, D.C.) notched her second consecutive double-double of the season, leading the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points and a dozen rebounds. For her efforts, Naylor was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Lady Bulldogs senior Alisha Burley (Baltimore, Md.) scored 12 points in the loss and junior Ty-Nita Baker (Houston, Miss.) added nine points, five rebounds and a team-high three assists. Seniors Keira Phipps (Arlington, Texas), ReVen Smith (Baltimore, Md.), juniors Alauna Jackson (Ellicott City, Md.) and Luna Jefferson added four points each and freshman Lisa Jing (Laurel, Md.) recorded two points to round out Bowie State’s scorers.
Shippensburg jumped out to a quick lead as it opened with a 12-1 run in the first 3:23 of the game. The Raiders led 36-24 at halftime, and were able to keep Bowie State at arm's length, as the Lady Bulldogs were unable to cut into the 12-point lead for the remainder of the contest. As a team, Bowie State shot a season-low 29.9 percent from the field, making just 23-of-77 and missed all 10 of their 3-point shots. Free throws were a huge discrepancy as the Lady Bulldogs attempted 18 over 40 minutes, converting nine. However, Shippensburg made more free throws (29-of-48) than Bowie State had made field goals.
The next opponent for the Lady Bulldogs is a Wednesday (November 19th) date with Division I George Washington University. Tip-off between the Colonials and Bowie State is scheduled for 7 pm in GW’s Smith Center.

BSU Men and Women Open Season With Wins
Wilson Leads Bowie State with 20 Points in Bulldogs 76-64 Season Opening Win Against Millersville
LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Bowie State University Bulldogs erased an early deficit and went on to defeat the Millersville Marauders 76-64 in the opening contest of the Lincoln University (CIAA-PSAC) Challenge.
“This game was very important to us and I told our guys we wanted to get off to good start”, said Bulldogs Head Coach Darrell Brooks. “We played some good basketball at times but turned the ball over (21 times) way too much, but I’m really pleased overall and thought we played hard.”
Bowie State (1-0) was led by freshman Ahmaad Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) with a team-high 20 points off the Bulldogs bench. Seniors Cameron Knox (Baltimore, Md.) and Zafir Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) tallied 18 and 10 points respectively. Junior Andre Jackson (Baltimore, Md.) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Bulldogs and freshman Dayshawn Wells (Baltimore, Md.) dished out a game-high five assists in the win.
Eddie Callender (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Millersville Marauders was with 22 points to go along with eight rebounds and seven steals. Shawn Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Kelvin Parker (York, Pa.) contributed 15 and 12 points respectively.
Millersville (0-1) jumped out to a 9-6 lead over the CIAA Northern Division preseason favorite on a Tommy Peterson (Baltimore, Md.) 3-pointer. Bowie State, however, reeled off an 18-2 run over the next seven-plus minutes to put the Marauders behind 24-11 with 8:25 left in the half. Millersville never recovered after that.
The Marauders trailed by as many as 17 in the first period but whittled the deficit to eight before Bowie State scored the final four points of the half. The Bulldogs shot a blistering 62 percent from the field in the first half and 51.9 percent for the game. Millersville countered with 36 percent shooting including 5-of-22 (22.7 percent) from deep.

When asked about playing East Stroudsburg, a 92-72 winner over Lincoln in the nightcap, Brooks said, “We have to be prepared for pressure … They pressure the basketball for 40 minutes and our guards a going to have to be tough with the ball, be smart, attack when we have it and run our offense when we don’t attack … Their a relentless team defensively and we have to be prepared for that.”

Lady Bulldogs Basketball Opens Season with 69-60 Victory over Lock Haven
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Bowie State University women’s basketball got their season started on a positive note, defeating Lock Haven University 69-60 in the opening game of the Wolf’s Bus Lines Classic.
Lady Bulldogs junior Ty-Nita Baker (Houston, Miss.) scored a game-high 22 points and added eight rebounds to lead Bowie State. Senior Donia Naylor (Washington, D.C.) picked up where she left off last season, recording a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds and junior Sheldeen Joseph (Belair St. Vincent and the Grenadines) contributed 10 points.
Rachael McDaniel paced Lock Haven with a team-high 14 points to go along with seven rebounds. Emily Daugherty and Sami Lane scored in double figures for the Lady Eagles, tallying 11 and 10 points respectively. Marrysa Moyer grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with seven points.
Both team struggled at the charity stripe as Lock Haven went 19-for-32 (59.4 percent) compared to 20-for-34 (58.8 percent) for Bowie State.
"We really struggled with free throws in this game. But down the stretch from about the four-minute mark on, we made them count. The kids fought, and fought, and fought. Their ability to sink those free-throws down the stretch really made the difference and it counted and I'm excited about the win", said Bowie State Head Coach Renard Smith.
A competitive first half saw eight ties and eight different lead changes, resulting in an even, 31-31 score after 20 minutes of play.
The second half mirrored the first, as the two teams battled back-and-forth with neither able to gain a substantial advantage.
Bowie State rallied late, however. With the game tied, 55-55 with 2:59 to play, the Bulldogs went on a, 14-5 run to secure the win.

The Lady Bulldogs play host Shippensburg at 6 pm Saturday (November 15th) to close out Bowie State’s participation in the Wolf’s Bus Lines Classic. Shippensburg dropped their season opener, falling 73-67 to Johnson C. Smith University.

Children in the U.S. today are less fit than they were a generation ago and showing early signs of cardiovascular disease such as weight gain, higher serum cholesterol, and cigarette smoking.
Inactive children, when compared with active children, weigh more, have higher blood pressure and lower levels of heart-protective high-density lipoproteins. Even though heart attack and stroke are rare in children, evidence suggests that the process leading to those conditions begins in childhood. The 1987 National Children and Youth Fitness Study indicates that at least half of youth don't engage in physical activity that promotes long-term health and that less than 36 percent of elementary and secondary schools offer daily PE classes and that most classes were unlikely to foster lifelong physical activity.
A fitness testing program sponsored by the Chrysler Fund Amateur Athletic Union, which tracks fitness among 9.7 million youngsters between the ages of 6 and 17, shows that children are getting slower in endurance running and are getting weaker. Since 1980 there has been a 10 percent drop off on scores for distance runs and an 11 percent decline in youngsters who achieved at least a "satisfactory" score on the entire test.
An estimated 2.1 million adolescents age 12 to 17 are smokers. Nine million American children under age five live with at least one smoker and are exposed to second-hand smoke for virtually the whole day. It is estimated that 3,000 American young people become smokers every day.
Children spend an average of 17 hours a week watching TV in addition to the time they spend on video and computer games. Inactive children are more likely to become inactive adults. Healthful lifestyle training should begin in childhood to promote improved cardiovascular health in adult life. The following good health practices should be promoted among children:
- regular physical activity
- a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet after the age of two
- smoking prevention
- appropriate weight for height
- regular pediatric medical checkups

Austboe, Barroso, Corke, and Lampkin Honored With Men’s Soccer All-Conference Major Awards
Central Islip, N.Y. – After tying for the East Coast Conference Regular Season Championship, members of the LIU Post Pioneers and NYIT Bears men’s soccer teams took home four out of five top All-Conference awards, as voted on by the league’s coaches. LIU Post forward Eivind Austboe (Stavanger, Norway) was named the Offensive Player of the Year while teammate, Jason Lampkin (Hawardon, North Wales, United Kingdom) earned the Rookie of the Year award. NYIT's major award honorees include Gonzolo Barroso (Madrid, Spain) winning the Defensive Player of the Year award and head coach Carlos Del Cid received Coach of the Year laurels. Molloy's Justin Corke (Valley Stream, N.Y.) rounds out the top award winners as the Goalkeeper of the Year.
For the second consecutive season, Austboe earns the conference's Offensive Player of the Year award after leading the ECC with 15 goals and five game-winning goals on the season. Austboe also added two assists to finish atop the conference leader board with 32 points. Austboe finds his name among the leader board for all of Division II, as well. During the regular season, he ranked in the top 20 in all of Division II in points per game (13th - 2.13), points (18th), goals per game (eighth - 1.0), goals (11th), and game-winning goals (11th).
Austboe wasn't alone when it came to getting the Pioneers on the scoreboard this season, as fellow forward, Lampkin, takes home the conference's Rookie of the Year honor. In 14 games, Lampkin found the back of the net four times and also dished off four assists to compile 12 points, finishing in the top 20 in the conference in all three categories.
Barroso was named the Defensive Player of the Year after helping anchor the stingy NYIT defense. Barroso started all 15 games for a Bears back line that allowed a conference-low 15 goals and 1.01 goals against average. He also helped NYIT shut out five opponents on the season.
Corke captures the Goalkeeper of the Year award after posting an 5-4-1 record and an ECC-best three shutouts in front of the net for the Lions in conference play. Corke also finished second in the ECC and ranked 24th in all of Division II with 79 saves.
Del Cid was named Coach of the Year after leading the Bears to an 8-1-1 mark, earning a share of the conference's Regular Season Championship for the first time since 2002. Under his guidance, NYIT also finished the regular season with a 12-2-1 overall mark and spent three weeks ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II Top 25 poll.
Austboe, Barroso, and Corke are joined on the All-Conference First Team by: Felix Angerer (F, District of Columbia), Alex Barbosa (F, NYIT), Per Forgaard (M, LIU Post), Javier Gallardo (M, NYIT), Jose Herrera (M, Dowling), Ivan Rico (M, NYIT), Guillermo Fuentes (B, NYIT), and Zachious Ogoo (B, Dowling).
All-Conference Second Team recipients include forwards: Michael Corbi (St. Thomas Aquinas), Michael Cunningham (Roberts Wesleyan), Jason Lampkin (LIU Post); midfielders: Hamza Elotmani (Molloy), Glen Reid (Queens), Matias Ruiz (LIU Post), and Nenad Smiljanic (District of Columbia); backs: Atunde Akum (District of Columbia), David Arvidsson (LIU Post), and Christoffer Olesen (Bridgeport); and goalkeeper: Jonathan Rico (NYIT).
Forwards Mike Gronenthal (Dowling) and Luka Ivanovic (Bridgeport), midfielders Carlos Coto (NYIT) and Christian Diaz (Mercy), backs Steven Jimenez (Molloy) and Dale McNevin (Molloy), and goalkeeper Louis Connor (District of Columbia) were also named as Honorable Mention All-Conference selections.
