Bowie State 3 - Cheyney 1 (VOLLEYBALL FINAL)

Lady Bulldogs Power past the Cheyney Lady Wolves 3-1 in Non-Conference Volleyball


BOWIE, Md. (November 4, 2014) - Sophomore India Mason (New Orleans, La.) recorded a match-high 22 kills and junior Yaje Ngundam (Bowie, Md.) added another 14 kills in Bowie State 3-1 non-conference decision over Cheyney University of Pennsylvania on Tuesdayevening. The Lady Bulldogs won by scores of 25-17, 25-19, 22-25 and 25-21.

Bowie State sophomore Brooke Archer-Simpson (Bowie, Md.) recorded a match-high 37 assists while redshirt junior Marissa Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) earned a match-high 20 digs. Ngundam and Archer-Simpson tallied double figure digs with 16 and 12 respectively. Mason paced the home team with a team-high three service aces to go along with five digs and a match-high three solo blocks.

Cheyney (1-29) was led by Breanna Joseph (Effort, PA.) with a double-double team-high 10 kills and 16 digs. Katherine Brooks (Irvine, Calif.) and Vishae Campbell knocked down eight and seven kills respectively for the Lady Wolves while Kennetha Wallace (Nashville, Tenn.) added two kills. Wallace was responsible for 18 of Cheyney’s 19 total assists.

Bowie State (7-20) had little trouble in the first two sets but experienced a 17-10 deficit in set three. Following a Lady Bulldogs timeout, the play of Mason sparked Bowie State and pulled the home team within two at 17-15.

The Lady Wolves maintained a third set lead until a Valerie Taylor (Walkersville, Md.) pulled the Lady Bulldogs even at 21-all. Cheyney regained the lead on the next rotation and held on to take the third set 25-22.

The fourth and final set of the night was full of excitement and hustle by both teams, but Bowie State claimed the victory and sweep the season series. The match saw 24 ties and eight lead changes.

Bowie State will close out the home portion of their 2014 schedule on Thursday (November 6th) hosting Goldey-Beacom College at 7 pmin the Lady Bulldogs final non-conference match of the season.

Exercise Combined With Diet Cuts Bodyfat, But From Where? Do you lose more weight by cutting calories than you do by exercising more? Recent evidence slightly tips the scales toward exercising. A study in December's Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise followed 26 formerly-sedentary women for 13 weeks. One group of women cycled for a half-hour once or twice a week while cutting 200 calories a day from their diet. Another cycled three to four times a week while eating the same as usual. And a third made no changes. Not surprisingly, the third group lost no fat. But both exercise groups lost similar amounts of visceral fat--deep, hard fat that shapes the typical beer belly. Visceral fat has been associated with heart disease and diabetes. The three-or-four-times-a-week exercise group, however, lost more subcutaneous fat--the kind that lays just beneath the skin, primarily in your arms and legs. Though not harmful, subcutaneous fat makes you look flabby.


WHAT'S YOUR BODY SHAPE? Waist-to-Hip Ratio Tells Where The Fat's At You're not as slim as you'd like to be. But you've never really thought of yourself as being overweight either. So when you read about the benefits of maintaining a "healthy weight," you wonder where you fit in--is your weight OK, or is it putting your health at risk? A simple do-it-yourself evaluation reported in the Mayo Clinic Health Letter can give you an idea of what shape your shape is in, and if you might benefit from shedding a few pounds. The waist-to-hip ratio indicates where most of your fat is located. People who carry most of their weight around their waists are often referred to as "apples." Those who carry most of their weight below their waist--around the hips and thighs--are often referred to as "pears." Generally, it's better to have a pear shape than an apple shape. That's because fat around the waist is associated with an increased risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer. Fat around your hips and thighs is considered less of a health risk.
To find out what shape you are, measure your hips at their widest point and your waist at its narrowest (usually at the navel, but this may vary). Divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement. A ratio greater than .80 for a woman and greater than 1.0 for a man indicates an apple shape.
TURN OFF THAT TV! Get Your Kids Up Off The Couch, Excessive TV Watching Is Making Them Fat Knowing that the overweight children of today are likely to become the overweight adults of tomorrow mandates that you pay careful attention to your child's diet, exercise and lifestyle habits. A study reported in a recent issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association reports on dated collected from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which measured the amount of physical activity and television watching among 4,000 children in U.S. households and the relationship to their Body Mass Index (BMI) and percent bodyfat. Overall, approximately 20% of the children reported fewer than three exercise sessions per week (which was even higher among girls); whereas 26% of the children watched more than four hours of television per day. Yes, per day! Not surprisingly, the increased television watching was associated with increased BMI and total bodyfat levels. The authors concluded that increased television watching was associated with the increasing prevalence of overweight children inthe U.S., and that children were increasingly participating in sedentary-leisure activities, such as playing video games, watching television and using computers, and that this trend was more than coincidental. As parents you need to encourage your children to participate in regular exercise, particularly activities that they can engage in for the rest of their lives. Good examples are running, cycling, weight training, soccer, bodybuilding, basketball, swimming and skiing. If we do not stop this trend, the health care crisis will continue to grow to bigger and bigger proportions in this country.

George Mason Holds Off Bowie State Lady Bulldogs 83-81 in Basketball Exhibition




FAIRFAX, Va. (November 2, 2014) - The Bowie State University women's basketball team fell short of victory in a 83-81 exhibition loss to Division I George Mason University on Sunday afternoon at the Patriot Center.

Junior Ty-Nita Baker (Houston, Miss.) paced the Lady Bulldogs with 31 points and grabbed eight rebounds while senior Donia Naylor (Washington, D.C.) added a double-double of 14 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Alisha Burley (Baltimore, Md.) and junior Alauna Jackson (Ellicott City, Md.) tallied 17 and 11 points respectively for the Lady Bulldogs.

The Patriot’s were led by Taylor Brown with 31 points while Kristi Mokube added 11 points. Qierra Murray, Tayler Dodson and Talisha Watts contributed 10 points each for George Mason. Watts also hauled down a game-high 17 rebounds.

Free throws really hurt Bowie State as the Lady Bulldogs shot a disappointing 26-of-41 (63.4 percent) from the charity stripe. George Mason struggled even more, making 28-of-45 (62.2 percent) at the free throw line.

After a 13-all tie, George Mason went on a 6-0 run before a Naylor free throw stopped the Patriot’s run. Cyndi Cole popped a 3-pointer and Mokube layup and free throw created the run.

The Lady Bulldogs experienced their first lead at 25-24 after a pair of free throws by junior Sheldeen Joseph (Belair St. Vincent and the Grenadines) at the 6:25 mark of the first half.  A Talisha Watts layup on George Mason’s next possession shifted the advantage back over the Patriot’s. However, Bowie State’s Burley answered with a layup on the other end and the Lady Bulldogs used the momentum to take a 38-32 lead into halftime.

Bowie State shot 42.9 percent (12-of-28) in the first 20 minutes but struggled at the free throw, making only 13-of-21. George Mason hit 11-of-39 first half field goals (28.2 percent) with four of those field goals behind the arc.

The second half was a much different story, as the Patriots would outscore Bowie State 28-10 over the first 12 minutes of the half to take a 62-48 lead. The Lady Bulldogs started the second half 1-for-12 from the field and trailed 50-43 with 11:52 left in the game.

The Bulldogs would rally back with a 28-20 run over the final 6:20 of the game, but Mason would hold on to take the win thanks to 10 free throws from Brown in the last three minutes of play.

“I’m proud of every single player as they fought to the very end”, said head coach Renard Smith. “To lose by two after being down by 10 late in the second half was very impressive.”

Bowie State begins the regular season on Friday (November 14th) against Lock Haven University in the opening game of the Wolf Bus Lines Classic hosted by Shippensburg University.
