Bowie State Volleyball Struggles Continue in Tri-Match Loses to Goldey-Beacom and Felician

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Bowie State volleyball team took on Goldey-Beacom and Felician in a non-conference tri-match and lost 3-0 in both matches. Goldey-Beacom defeated the Lady Bulldogs 25-16, 25-8 and 25-15 and lost to Felician by scores of 25-15, 25-11 and 25-10.

In the opening match against Goldey-Beacom, Bowie State (1-10) was held to a -.051 attack percentage compared to the Lightning’s .325 attack percentage.

Junior Yaje Ngundam (Bowie, Md.) and sophomore India Mason (New Orleans, La.) led Bowie State with a half dozen kills each on a combined 33 attacks. Ngundam also tallied seven digs and added one service ace.

Sophomore Amy Harvey (Laurel, Md.) recorded three kills in match one and recorded a team-high 10 assists. Redshirt junior Marissa Martinez (Albuquerque, N.M.) paced the Lady Bulldogs with a team-high eight digs.

Goldey-Beacom (6-6) defeated Bowie State in straight sets for the second time this season, was led by the Lightning trio of Kadi McCoy, Taylor Moyer and Grace McCarthy. McCoy, Moyer and McCarthy put down nine, eight and seven kills respectively.

Danielle Cipoletti contributed a match-high 25 assists to go along with two service aces, a match-high 12 digs and one blocks assists.

In match two of the tri-match, the Lady Bulldogs tandem of Mason and Ngundam were responsible for four and two kills respectively of the total eight team kills.

Sophomore Brooke Archer-Simpson (Bowie, Md.) accounted for six of Bowie State’s eight assists while Ngundam and redshirt sophomore Alicia Grant (Edgewood, Md.) tied for team-high dig honors with eight apiece.

Host Felician (2-4) tallied 30 kills in the three-set sweep on 84 total attacks with Kayla Gallagher leading the way with a match-high nine digs. Sally Taylor added seven kills and Kristen Keller contributed five kills for the Golden Falcons.

Bowie State University will have little time to rest before returning to action on Sunday (9/21), as they welcome conference foe and Northern Division leading Chowan University to the A.C. Jordan Arena. Match time is set for 1 pm.

Sometimes soap is worse for your health than dirt

Some Types of Soap Pose a Greater
Danger to Your Health than Dirt

What if you found out the very thing you use to guarantee a clean life is actually polluting your house and body?
That’s how I felt when I first wrote about toxin-heavy laundry detergents three years ago (see Issue #133). Because the sad truth is that you expose your body to toxic chemicals every time you use regular soap to wash your clothes. That’s also true for a host of other cleaning products. Here’s what you need to do. . .

Bennett Has Career Day but Concord Holds On for 37-34 Win over Bowie State

ATHENS, W.Va. – Senior Trevon Bennett (Fort Washington, Md.) came off the Bowie State bench to throw for a career-best 349 yards but Concord University held off the Bulldogs second half surge to claim a 37-34 win on Saturday afternoon.

"Trevon did what we knew he was capable of doing but first half turnovers really hurt us”, said Bowie State head coach Damon Wilson following the loss.

Bowie State (0-3) was led by Bennett’s (349) passing yards and team-high 55 rushing yards. Senior Khari Lee (Baltimore, Md.) had a career afternoon as well, hauling in eight receptions for 105 yards. Redshirt sophomore Jordan Garrison (Baltimore, Md.) played his best game as a Bulldog, recording 101 yards on five receptions and two touchdowns.

Redshirt junior Curtis Pumphrey (Laurel, Md.) led the Bulldogs defense with 10 total tackles while graduate student Christopher Townsend (Washington, D.C.) and redshirt senior Paxton Queen (Upper Marlboro, Md.) added nine and eight tackles respectively.

Brian Novak and T.J. Smith paced the Mountain Lions’ offense with 419 passing yards and 149 reception yards on seven catches. Calvinaugh Jones led both teams with 141 rushing yards on 22 carries. Gary Saylor was Concord’s top defensive player with eight total tackles.

The Concord Mountain Lions (3-0) scored first at the 11:06 mark when Andy Ellington kicked a 22-yard field goal. The score was setup after a 51-yard run by Calvinaugh on the Mountain Lions first play from scrimmage down to the Bowie State 13 yard line.

Concord (3-0) capitalized on Bowie State’s third interception of the first half when Novak connected with T.J. Smith for a 26 yard touchdown with 14:20 left in the second quarter. Ellington added the extra point for a 10-0 lead.

The Mountain Lions increased its lead to 17-0 on a Novak to Ryan Stewart 48 yard touchdown at the 9:59 mark of the second quarter.

Concord’s Will Greathouse blocked a Mario Diaz-Aviles 41 yard field goal with 10 seconds left in the first half and Jeremiah Johnson returned it 65 yards for the score. Ellington added the extra point and sent the Mountain Lions into halftime with a very comfortable 24-0 lead.

When Wilson was asked what changed the momentum in the second half, he said, “We played our worst football in the first half … the guys regrouped and responded in the second half but we simply ran out of time in the end.”

The Concord duo of Novak and Smith added six more points at the 12:01 mark of the third quarter, this time from 11 yards out to pad the Mountain Lions lead at 31-0.

The Bulldogs finally got some points on the scoreboard at the 10:24 mark of the third quarter on a Bennett to Kerrick Pollock (Miami, Fla.) for a 21-yard touchdown. The Diaz-Aviles extra point was good but Bowie State trailed 31-6.

Bowie State’s defense forced a Concord fumble and took advantage of the turnover. Bennett connected with Garrison for a 40 yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 31-14.

Graduate student Kendall Jefferson (Temple Hills, Md.) pounded in from one yard out at the 4:09 mark of the third quarter to trim the deficit to 31-21. The score was setup following a 51-yard Bennett to Pollock pass and catch.

Bennett and Garrison teamed up again at the 14:06 mark of the fourth quarter for a 16 yard touchdown that cut the Mountain Lions lead to 31-27.

Concord stopped the Bowie State run when Novak connected with Stewart for an 18 yard score. The extra point was muffed and set the score at 37-27 with 11:04 remaining in the game.

Bennett scored his first touchdown of the season with 4:53 left to play and the Diaz-Aviles extra point pulled Bowie State within three at 37-34.

The Bulldogs hit the road for the third consecutive week next Saturday (9/27) traveling to Salisbury (N.C.) to face the surprising Blue Bears of Livingstone College in the conference opener for both teams. Game time is set for 1 pm in Alumni Stadium.

  • Ten Gym Mistakes Beginners Make

    And How To Avoid Them
    Originally featured in: Men's Fitness
Being new at the gym is awkward enough, but starting a workout program without knowing what you're doing is far worse. In our attempt to impart enlightenment for the weight-room initiate, we present 10 common mistakes you should know about -- immediately.
Using incorrect form while bench pressing (dumbbell or barbell):
Regardless of whom you see doing it at the gym, don't pick your feet up from the floor when you bench. Some people tell you to keep your feet up so you don't arch your back during the movement. But if you have to arch your back, you're benching way beyond your abilities. Switch to a lighter weight to ensure that your feet are always solidly planted. This will keep you from toppling off the bench and injuring yourself or others.
    Holding your breath:
This may seem ridiculously obvious, but remember to breathe when you lift. Sometimes, when an activity is new, you concentrate so much on doing it correctly that you forget to let your body do its natural things, like breathing. The breathing pattern for lifting is to exhale on the positive phase (pushing or pulling the weight) and inhale on the negative (lowering the weight). Holding your breath can raise your blood pressure and, if you hold it long enough, cause fainting.
    Not using collars:
Always use collars on the bars when you're working without a spotter. Everybody has a weaker side of the body, and this weakness is exaggerated in the initial phases of weight training. During a lift, the bar may begin to lean imperceptibly toward the weaker side of the body. As it tilts, the plates slide downward until they suddenly spill off the bar and the opposite side drops in a quick seesaw action-- accompanied by a loud clanging of iron. You're left standing or lying red-faced, not physically hurt, perhaps, but definitely diminished in the pectoral pecking order. Use collars.
Fearing that you'll get too big:
Don't ever say this in the gym, or you'll instantly be branded a gymbecile. The reality is that few people put on as much muscle as they want; most settle for a physique better than the one they started with, but hardly the one they idealize. Remember: A pound of muscle is approximately the size of a baseball, while a pound of fat is about the size of a softball. In other words, you can add plenty of lean muscle before your biceps burst through your shirt sleeves.
    Spotting incorrectly:
Hang around a gym long enough and, sooner or later, you'll either be asked to spot or need one yourself. If you suspect you're going to need a spot, ask for it. Gym rats are always more than willing, and it's much better to ask quietly for a spot than to scream loudly for help once you're in trouble. If you're asked to spot a guy who's benching 500 pounds and you know you couldn't roll that, much less lift it, be honest and say so. To fail as a spotter and endanger someone is unforgivable.
    Trying to spot reduce:
There's no such thing. If you have a belly, wearing a plastic suit or some sort of gizmo around your stomach as you exercise won't transform your legendary flab into equally fabulous abs. Neither will doing 20,000 crunches a day. The only way to develop and see your abs is to exercise and watch your diet. You can have the strongest abs in the world, but if they're swathed in fat, no one will ever see them.
    Starting too heavy:
Resist the temptation to lift as much as you can the first few times in the gym, even if the smaller guy next to you is lifting more. While your muscles may be able to lift the weight, your connective tissues probably aren't ready for it. Go for high reps the first few times and gradually work your way heavier, especially in pushing exercises such as the bench press and any of the shoulder exercises.
There's no sense in building stronger muscles without corresponding strength in the connective tissue to avoid injury. And there's no sense in trying to outlift that smaller guy if you shorten your limbs in the process.
Playing a personal stereo too loudly:
Wearing a personal stereo is a good idea if you don't like the music in the gym. We all know music picks up spirit and energy, but remember to keep it low. Headphones regularly emit more than 100 dBA. Sustained exposure to sounds over 85 dBA can cause temporary damage or permanent hearing loss. If you can't hear somebody speaking to you in a normal voice, turn it down. No sense becoming buff and deaf.
    Not drinking enough water:
Your blood is 85 percent water, your brain 75 percent and your muscles 70 percent. Drink lots of it. If a muscle is dehydrated by 3 percent, it loses 10 percent of its contractile strength. Drink before you're thirsty. By the time you're conscious of thirst, you're already partially dehydrated, which can adversely affect stamina and concentration. To keep from becoming a stumbling, mumbling gym zombie, drink water. It's even calorie-free.
    Wearing a weight belt:
Don't wear a weight belt when you're just starting out. The weight you use shouldn't be so heavy that you need a belt to lift it (if you have back problems, see a doctor before starting). Wearing a belt can cause you to develop poor lifting habits, such as not consciously tightening your abs as you lift. If you have to wear a belt, remember to loosen it between sets. A tight belt can raise blood pressure and cause ulcer-like symptoms, such as heartburn or abdominal pain. Remember, the belt is designed to help support the lower back, not act as a girdle.
