Late Bowie State Charge Not Enough in 73-69 Loss to Saint Augustine?s Lady Falcons

Late Bowie State Charge Not Enough in 73-69 Loss to Saint Augustine’s Lady Falcons

BOWIE, Md. – The Bowie State Lady Bulldogs went on a 23-10 late second half run, but it was not enough as Saint Augustine’s held of the charge to capture a 73-69 win. Junior Denver Clyde (Glen Burnie, Md.) finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs and junior teammate Donia Naylor (Washington, D.C.) totaled season highs of 13 points and 13 rebounds to pace Bowie State.

Junior Ashley Castle (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 10 points, three assists and two steals and the Lady Bulldogs out-scored Saint Augustine’s 38-22 in the paint. The loss, Bowie State’s third in row, evens the Lady Bulldogs record at 6-6 (1-3 CIAA).

Lakiya Rouse (Greensboro, N.C.) scored a team-high 15 points, including four key free throws in the final two minutes to lead Saint Augustine’s in scoring. Rouse also pulled down eight rebounds which was second best on the team behind Terri Jacobs’ (McDonough, Ga.) 12 rebounds.

With the victory, the Lady Falcons (8-4 overall / 3-0 CIAA) extended their win streak to six games.

Lady Falcons’ Jeanne-Marie Wilson (Temple Hills, Md.) added 12 points in a return to her home state Porscha Walton (Chesterfield, Va.) scored 10 points for the visitors. Regime McCombs (Greenville, S.C.) added eight points and Ebony Spencer (Chesapeake, Va.) chipped in seven points for the Lady Falcons, who outscored the Bulldogs 40-30 in bench points.

Both Rouse and Jacobs combined to make 6-of-6 free throws in last 1:54 to stave off the Lady Bulldogs, who tied the game at 67-67 after trailing by 15 points early in the second half. Rouse was 4-for-4 and Jacobs was 2-for-2 the Lady Falcons.

After hitting two free throws, Jacobs came up with a huge block to preserve a four-point lead. Rouse put the game away with two huge free throws for a six-point lead with 39 seconds left. The contest was physical and heated with a player from each team getting a technical foul and a Bowie State player drawing an intentional foul. Bowie State third-year head coach Renard Smith was ejected after being whistled for two technical fouls. The aggressive play resulted in the Lady Falcons shooting 35-of-51 free throws.

The Lady Falcons maintained a sizable working margin in the second half after leading 41-28 at halftime. Walton drained two free throws for a 43-28 lead and the margin stayed in double digits until late in the second stanza.

The lead was 13 points after a Wilson free throw with 9:28 left, but the Lady Bulldogs used a 19-6 spurt to tie the game.
The Lady Bulldogs led 4-0 early, but the Lady Falcons asserted themselves quickly. Relying on pressure defense, Saint Augustine’s surged ahead 12-5 and never trailed again.

The Lady Bulldogs will look to snap their three game slide on Saturday (1/11), as Bowie State hosts Shaw University at 2 pm in the A.C. Jordan Arena.

Saint Augustine?s Falcons Spoil Conference Home Opener to Top Bowie State 79-69

Saint Augustine’s Falcons Spoil Conference Home Opener to Top Bowie State 79-69

BOWIE, Md. –Amere May (South Haven, Mich.) scored 23 points including a huge three-pointer late, as Saint Augustine’s University rallied from 12 points down in the second half to top Bowie State 79-69 on Thursday night. The loss was the fifth straight for Bowie State and drops the defending CIAA Champions record to 6-9 overall and 0-4 in CIAA play.

“We just didn’t finish it out as we’ve done over the past five games”, said Bulldogs fifth-year head coach Darrell Brooks. “Our guys want to win, they’re working hard and they care, but we just have to manage our lead when we get it in the second half!”

The Bulldogs struggled from the charity stripe, making 16-of-25 but turned the ball over 11 times, tying their season-low. “We shoot free throws ad nauseam every day in practice … It’s all mental”, said Brooks.

Senior David Golladay (Upper Marlboro, Md.) scored a career-high 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting to go along with seven rebounds, two assists and two steals to pace Bowie State. Senior Carlos Smith (Baltimore, Md.) notched a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds and added a pair of blocks and steals, while fellow senior Ray Gatling (Oxon Hill, Md.) contributed 19 points and two assists in the loss.

May drained a trey with 1:11 left to break a tie game and put the Falcons up 69-66. It was the Falcons’ first lead since early in the first half.

Bulldogs junior Zafir Williams (Philadelphia, Pa.) connected on a free throw to slice the Falcons’ lead to two points, but Saint Augustine’s Tashaun Stockdale (Poplar, S.C.) converted a key three-point play for a 72-67 Falcons lead with 35 seconds left.  Stockdale added a free throw and Joel Kindred (Raleigh, N.C.) threw down a dunk to increase the lead to 75-67 with 13 seconds left.

After Golladay dunked to pull the Bulldogs within 75-69, May hit 4-of-4 free throws for the final margin after he was fouled and after a technical foul was assessed to Coach Brooks with 3.4 seconds remaining in the contest.

After trailing by five at halftime (39-35), Saint Augustine’s (10-3 / 3-0 CIAA) outscored the Bulldogs 45-30 in the second half including 13-3 in the last two minutes of the game after falling behind 48-36 early in the second half.

In addition to May’s production, Kindred added 13 points and Stockdale tallied 10 points for the Falcons, who outscored the Bulldogs 29-6 in bench points and 17-9 in second-chance points. Jon Crawley (Richmond, Va.) added nine points Raheem Jolliffe (Fayetteville, N.C.) had eight points and six rebounds.

The Bulldogs will have little time to regroup as Bowie State will host the Shaw University Bears on Saturday (1/11) afternoon in the A.C. Jordan Arena. Tip-time is set for 4 pm.

Bowie State Mens and Womens Hoops Results Vs Winston Salem State

Winston-Salem State Free Throws Make Difference in 56-61 Win over Bowie State Lady Bulldogs

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Free throws made the difference for the second game in a row, as the Bowie State women's basketball drops a 56-51 decision to Winston-Salem State. WSSU's Lady Rams (9-4 / 3-0 CIAA) made 24-of-39 free throws compared to 11-of-19 for the Lady Bulldogs.

Junior Ashley Castle (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the only Bowie State player to score in double figures, tallying 11 points. Graduate student Uchechi Ahwaiwe (Riverdale, Md.) added eight points and six rebounds and juniors Alisha Burley (Baltimore, Md.) and Jasmine McIntosh (Bowie, Md.) scored six points each. Junior Donia Naylor (Washington, D.C.) led the Lady Bulldogs on the glass with a personal season-best seven rebounds.

Bowie State jumped out to a 10-2 lead. However, a Jasmine Elum lay-up at the 12:56 mark kickstarted the Lady Rams’ effort as the team erased their deficit with a 14-6 run that tied the game, 16-16 with 5:19 left in the first half. Winston-Salem State scored the next three points only to see a Burley 3-pointer tie the game again.

A Dionna Scott layup gave WSSU the lead on the Lady Rams’ next trip down the floor, but Bowie State’s Ahaiwe answered with a layup of her own to create the fourth tie of the first half at 21.

The Lady Bulldogs used a pair of free throws by senior Alessandra Flores Conway (Hagerstown, Md.), an Ahaiwe free throw and a Naylor layup to go into the locker room at halftime with a 26-23 lead.

The second half looked like more of the same for the Lady Rams as the home team trailed the Lady Bulldogs, 38-33 with 13:58 left to play. Though the Lady Rams would continue to chip away, the Winston-Salem State was never able overcome their deficit as they trailed the Lady Bulldogs, 47-42 with5:46 left to play. It was there that the Lady Rams would make their stand as they clamped down for a 9-2 run that gave the team its first lead of the second half, 51-49 with 2:38 left to play.

The Lady Rams turned to their defensive efforts to close out the game as they held the Lady Bulldogs to just one field goal over the final 6:49 of the game and hit some clutch free throws to seal the 56-51 win.

Scott was Winston-Salem State’s top scorer and rebounder with 13 and eight respectively. Jovonah Graham recorded eight points and Raven Fields along with Amanda Hairston added six points apiece.

Bowie State (6-5 / 1-2 CIAA) returns home to host Saint Augustine's on Thursday (1/9) evening at 5:30 pm.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Bowie State men's basketball suffered its fourth loss in row, losing 77-57 to the Rams of Winston-Salem State. Senior Ray Gatling (Oxon Hill, Md.) poured in a team-high 22 points to lead Bowie State.

Winston-Salem State Strolls to 77-57 Home Win against Bowie State?s Bulldogs

It was all Rams all night long, as Winston-Salem State started hot and never cooled off as Marquez Jones was on fire from behind the three point arc, and Preston Ross was solid in all aspects of the game as the Rams jumped out to a 13-5 lead, before the Bowie State Bulldogs managed to claw their way back to tie the game at 19-19 midway through the first half on a Gatling three-point play.

A 15-2 run by WSSU quickly got their lead back to double figures before Bowie State would fight their way back to within five  points at 37-32, once again on the play of Gatling. The Rams scored the final five points of the half on a 3-pointer by Javan Wells and two free throws by WyKevin Bazemore to give Winston-Salem State a 42-32 halftime advantage.

Bowie State come out of the half and put some pressure on the Rams, as they cut into the WSSU lead by trimming it to six points, before the Rams would go on an 18-5 run to push the lead to 21 points at 62-41 with a little over 12 minutes left to play.

The Rams would keep their foot on the gas, as Marquez Jones continued his hot shooting, and the inside presence of Preston Ross and Bazemore took control.

Bowie State would have one last run left in them as they would go on an 11-4 run to cut into the lead, but once again the Rams would keep the Bulldogs at bay with strong play from the entire team, as they would finish the game on an 11-5 to take a 77-57 win over Bowie State.
